JJ Redick has LeBron James’ respect as he walks in the door – Brian Windhorst | SC with SVP

JJ reck is going to coach his very first NBA game next season on the bench of one of the most stored franchise franchises I should say in the sport today the Los Angeles Lakers hired him as their next head coach when Dan Hurley said no it certainly seemed like this would be the conclusion but one story now another begins and it’s pretty remarkable reck has never coached a game and he takes over a team with an all-time Superstar at the end of an amazing career and a fan base who believes they’re supposed to contend for titles even though at the moment they’re good but not great seems like a pretty steep first climb bit of context on this hire for Los Angeles reic becomes the eighth head coach for the Lakers since Phil Jackson retired in 2011 an eighth head coach including inms for the franchise would match the most in a 14 season span JJ of course had an outstanding college career at Duke he’s now the third to win the wooden award then become a head coach in the NBA joining Danny AES and bird H played for BYU and Coach the Suns bird of course played for Indiana State then coach the Pacers Ric also becomes the fifth rookie head coach for LeBron James including Darin ham just two seasons ago prior to him tud took over midseason with the Cavaliers in January of 2016 and they won a title that year we welcome Brian wior into the show gifted podcaster who knows ball Wendy which team you want the Pistons of the Cavs which you I’m kidding but at the same time look JJ we know is a tremendous player and we obviously know he understands the game this isn’t a training wheels gig it’s the Lakers I just am curious your reaction to the higher this is a highrisk high reward move by the Lakers no doubt it’s certainly it’s almost like taking a swing in the draft If you’re sort of draft and late on the best athlete in the draft because you just know that he’ll be able to figure it out because you believe he’s got the tools um you know when you hire a firsttime head coach I don’t care what the circumstances are I don’t care if you’re expected to finish last or first you’re admitting that the you’re going to have to live with mistakes JJ reck will make mistakes that will probably cost the Lakers games Red hour boach made mistakes that cost the Celtics games in his first year I didn’t see it but I guarantee you because it happens to every coach but what you’ve seen with JJ is an incredibly High work ethic an incredibly High intellect um definitely a f for the modern version of the game this is a guy who is a former player who Embraces analytics and the new style that’s not a combination you see often I think the most important thing that he could probably bring um is that he has LeBron James respect walking in the door you said he had five rookie head coaches well not all of them were created equal I don’t think David blat as decorated as he was in Europe ever had a chance from day one with LeBron and I think tyo came in on day one and instantaneously had LeBron’s respect in the NBA if you don’t have your stars respect I don’t care if you are the greatest coach in the history of the sport you will not succeed so JJ is going to have that and he has laid the groundwork to do it whether he was doing it um knowing so when he did this podcast or not he’s got it and so that gives him a chance that and I think he really wants this job really really wants to succeed at this job this is not something he’s trying out he wants it he’s going to be tactically excellent he’s got some ideas for to improve them and he’s going to deploy them and we’ll see high risk High reward it would seem to me Brian that it would be critical to get somebody who’d done it right I mean you haven’t I mean you look at a guy like Missoula he was young and he hadn’t done it in the NBA but he even in even in the second row you’re still in the building you know you’re you’re still there nightly watching games being played and coached so I it it feels like the experienced staff is a must where where where does something like that begin in your estimation well it’s going to begin with roster you know Joe moula inherited a just absolutely tremendously great roster that got even better in his second year and he obviously did really well so to me I know that we focus so heavily on this coaching shch because there’s twists and turns it’s not the most important thing the Lakers are going to do this month what they do with their roster how they address the holes in their team that’s what’s going to give JJ reck a chance they’ve got to find some defensive Wing players otherwise I don’t care who’s coaching them they’re going to struggle they’ve got to make smart moves with their draft picks they’ve got two draft picks they can trade plus the Draft pick on draft night they have other young players who have potential trade assets Rob pinka has to have a great summer and the coaching move is only one you know relatively you know limited part of it let me close with this a quick thought speaking of of rosters and assets the Oklahoma City Thunder get Caruso in exchange for Giddy and everyone in the internet wanted to know wait straight up prey’s done it again no picks involved yeah that your headshake is that reaction isn’t it man I so many teams wanted Alex Caruso and that this is the trade that the Bulls did was surprising um they did need a franchise point guard and I actually think Josh giddy has a chance to put up big numbers in Chicago the question will be whether they give him a bunch of money now he’s eligible for an extension Sam prey has a long history of trading players that he doesn’t want to extend before it becomes an issue all the way back to a guy you may have heard of named James Harden and I think after this playoffs where you saw um you know Mark dagal have to pull Josh giddy off the floor in some high leverage situations you could kind of see if there was an option for him that they would try to move him and they smashed one out of the park here because Alex Caruso is an all defensive player who joins arguably the best perimeter defensive team in the league when you look at Lou Dort when you look at Jaylen Williams when you look at Shay gildas Alexander oh my God what a a team that they’re building basically they are everything defensively the Lakers need when you compare those two things it’s ironic because the Lakers let Caruso go of course and you know ultimately they’ve got to get Caruso signed to an extension at some point he’s in the last year of his contract um whereas giddy is under control for the Bulls but I don’t doubt that they can do it and the big thing here is this out of all the contenders Scott no team is more upwardly mobile really than the than the Thunder because they still have $3 million in salary cap space and all of those draft picks I realize that the 76ers have that space but they don’t have the package of picks or the the the two the two deep that they’ve got across the team and to do this deal get a major player who’s very you know effective in a Championship uh contending team a two-way wing and not touch your salary cap space and not touch your draft picks man that’s a big one [Music]

  1. Where are the people on tv who will criticize this issue? I’m tired of these mouthpieces just trying to remain in Lebrons good graces

  2. WHERE'S THE "WHITE" HATE?? ESPN trashed Steve Nash & played the Race card every single freakin' day claiming unfairness to Black coaches and even threw the word PRIVILEGE! Where is it now huh???? Nash was a two-time MVP. JJ is just your own ESPN employee. #pATHETIC

  3. If anything its very entertaining to see. JJ personality will be very spicy toward the media. I am more interested in his press conference than his coaching to be honest. Imagine his answers when the media asked him "what do you say to people when they say you got the job mainly because you have a podcast with Lebron?" Or " how does it feel that you not the Lakers first choice" or " you never coach basketball before"

  4. Honestly, I wish good luck. I was just thinking about something (now it's obvious… I really like LeBron James). But it's like the NBA is LeBron James' mistress and his agent , making her do things she doesn't always consent to! Basically, Rob Pelinka and the Lakers are the big fools in this situation. This needs to stop: LeBron sending texts to the college coach who just turned down the Lakers… (good for him). Then, LeBron and his agent wanting a guaranteed NBA contract for his son, even though no team is currently considering drafting him beyond the 55th pick… etc, etc! And for now, I'm putting JJ Redick's arrival in the same basket, waiting for him to prove himself as a head coach. I know players have influence and, once again, I like LeBron! However, at some point, these conflicts of interest need to stop. We'll see next season, but for now, I'm already annoyed because we're going to talk about the Lakers for six months. In my humble opinion, they don't stand a chance in the coming years. 🙂

  5. Windhorst is 100% correct. They need some athletic wings that can shoot and a few players that can put the ball on the floor. The Lakers should’ve held onto Caruso.

  6. What a joke. Leflop is a disgrace and cancer to any team he is on. The Lakers should have ran away from Lechina James a long time ago. JJ will he fires by next year and ofcourse Leflop will blame him. The NBA is a joke.

  7. I mean we had pockets Darvin Ham , do I expect a lot from JJ, no not really. But at least I know he’s trying and putting in the work

  8. Two historic franchises. One just won a championship. The other is slave to a diva superstar. A superstar who wants his friends hired as coach. Who wants you to use a draft pick to pick his son. This franchise just picked a rookie coach w no experience, switched on a dime to a hot collegiate candidate, then switched back to the superstars friend. Again, one historic franchise just won a championship and the other looks like a clown show.

  9. If you look close you can see LeBron’s hand way up Brian Windhorst, making his mouth move.

  10. Ticket prices at crypto should be 30% all year this will be recipe for disaster. Thanks Queen James for your feminist mindset and thanks Jeanie Buss for your lack of basketball iq and common sense.

  11. The Lakers as an organisation has taken a GIANT STEP BACKWARDS.Its not going to work and fans are going to let them. know . Windhorst is their front man, alway explaining things like he's part of management

  12. 😂 this is going to turn bad, like leaving milk out from the fridge. Just give it a little time. 😂

  13. I knew the Lakers should’ve traded Lebron. What a frickin disaster. The Busses need to just sell the team to Lebron and get it over with.

  14. Nobody saw this coming right? Just like it's gonna be such a big surprise when they draft bronny. What a shock. The power LeBron has over teams is amazing

  15. Dr Buss's children are one of the examples I give when people ask me why I don't want to have kids. They are not their dad 🙄
