Scouting Castle and Carter in their two head-to-head battles this NCAA season

This year, two presumed lottery picks faced each other twice in Big East matchups. I thought watching the highlights of these two games was illuminating both in how Devin Carter and Stephon Castle matched up against each other and how they may be able to play WITH each other.

Game 1 (Jan 31, 2024): Providence @ UConn

Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z3tT1SPd-c

  • Carter: 20 PTS (6-18, 1-4 from 3, 7-11 FT), 9 REB (3 Off), 4 AST, 4 TO, 4 PF
  • Castle: 20 PTS (7-14, 2-4 from 3, 4-7 FT), 5 REB (3 Off), 1 AST, 0 TO, 1 STL, 5 PF

Game 2 (Mar 9, 2024): UConn @ Providence

Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtWOOA1jop0

  • Carter: 24 PTS (9-19, 2-7 from 3, 4-6 FT), 15 REB (1 Off), 4 AST, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 2 TO, 2 PF
  • Castle: 14 PTS (6-12, 2-4 from 3, 0-0 FT), 6 REB (1 Off), 3 AST, 0 TO, 4 STL, 3 PF

First, I don't see Castle as a point guard prospect, but as a ball-handling wing a la Scottie Barnes or Jalen Williams. His lack of outside shooting over the course of the season is a worry, but he was about to hit a couple per game in these two contests. He gets a couple of hockey assists in these game highlights. I really like how he physically contests on defense and has a Big Body mentality going to the rim. He showcased a big of a floater, too. If he plays opposite Vassell on the wing, he will absolutely need to be at least a decent 3-point shooter, but you can see the vision of him as one of many capable ball-handlers and decision-makers.

Second, Carter shows a lot of promise as a lead guard. He went right at Clingan and finished at the rim despite being a foot shorter. He's patient in the lane, waiting for better opportunities to either kick out or take the shot himself. The threes he hit were comfortably from NBA distance. He worms around screens and uses his length to contest perimeter shots.

If the Spurs decide to pursue both players, this would immediately improve the team's defensive depth and playmaking potential. Carter provides a bit more sizzle as someone who can beat his defender and be a more reliable threat from distance, but putting Castle on the floor with him gives the Spurs another creator who can set up Vic.

What are y'all's impressions?
