Emergency Pod | Bulls Trade Alex Caruso For Josh Giddey & Lakers Hire JJ Redick As Head Coach

[Music] good evening sweet world and welcome back to the no dunks podcast on the athletic Network it’s still Thursday June 20th I’m still J SKS but I’m here in the yard with some breaking news the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a four-year contract wait hold up there’s breaking news on top of breaking news we’ll get to reic in a second I don’t know about 10 or 15 minutes before jumping on to do this podcast Live on YouTube W Dropped a Bomb W reported breaking the Chicago Bulls are trading two time all offensive guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Josh giddy that’s right I had planned on jumping on here giving you an emergency podcast my thoughts on reic being officially signed as the Lakers head coach and then right before we went live here’s W saying Caruso to the Thunder giddy to the Bulls now it’s just me here doing the solo pod but I can report that Trey Kirby in the no dunk slack he’s up in Illinois with the fam taking a couple days off he responded with rip yep rest in peace to the W tweet and then he said quote I can’t wait to wear my slob wizard tea the Josh giddy slob wizard uh the most poorly timed t-shirt ever made from our down to dunk crew slob wizard uh after the giddy controversy and news trouble uh that the headlines were coming out uh slob wizard Sidelines out of bounds wizard he’s a master at them anyway uh I don’t even know what to think of this I well I know what to think I love it for the Thunder another defensive-minded guy a perimeter player can still shoot they get him you knew giddy was gone we said that all postseason long giddy’s gone is whatever they’re going to get for him and they get Caruso and then the flip side the Bull’s not getting a pick for Alex Caruso that hurts but giddy is super young he is talented uh so maybe here the Bulls are finally rebuilding I saw earlier today there were reports that they’ve tried to trade Zack LaVine like 15 times they’re they’re throwing everything at the wall will anybody take Zack LaVine in his contract but maybe that’s the start here they move off Caruso and at least get again a talented player and giddy as has his limitations um but still really really young and yeah Caruso I I think this is a a great addition to the Thunder uh and I feel like thunder fans must be loving this but again this just happened I’ve been wrapping my head around the reic uh news here the last hour or so as I got ready for this but then we get the W bomb we’ll talk about it in Greater detail next week with Trey Kirby when he’s back with Taz melis of course and John Hollinger is going to join us uh early next week to do an NBA draft uh preview we’ll talk about the draft but I’m sure we’ll talk about this as well and who knows how many other trades are going to come here on Friday and over the weekend it’s Silly Season everybody um wild wild wild stuff but let’s get into to uh the initial reason for doing this podcast I wanted to share uh some thoughts on the other breaking news because the Lakers have agreed to a four your contract with JJ reick to make him the franchise’s next coach contract in the neighborhood of about $8 million per season I saw those numbers by way of the athletic uh reic for those that don’t know uh 15year NBA vet he played for the magic he played for the bucks he played for the Clippers the Sixers uh the Pelicans and the Mavericks I think I named them all played for a surprising amount of teams uh but most recently an ESP PN broadcaster and NBA podcaster all of the casters this guy casted and casted broadcaster podcaster and now he’s the head coach of the Lakers and I have seven random thoughts on the Lakers hiring JJ reck as their next head coach so let’s move with them with some Pace here first one timing of reck’s hire here is notable I think for a couple of reasons uh one he’s joining the Lakers you know front office here really as the coach he’ll be a part of the roster planning ahead of the draft which is next week two nights of NBA draft on Wednesday and Thursday uh and and that’s important especially for the Lakers right because on June 26th which I think is Wednesday uh that’ll be the first day the Lakers can trade their three tradable picks if that’s the direction they go 2024 pick 2029 2031 is that enough to get a star uh or at least uh really uh you know talented uh rotation player we will see if they even do that but they could so re’s there the other part uh is the whole LeBron James uh looming free agency he must decide LeBron whether he’s going to exercise that 51.4 million player option for the 2425 season by June 29th the Lakers obviously want to keep LeBron they basically say hey whatever you want man whatever type of contract you want we will do it but you know he does have that decision still does this mean he’s more likely to obviously stick around either you know exercise that or or whatever uh route he takes probably I I’d be shocked if LeBron is going anywhere here and then the last part of uh the notable timing of this hire I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Lakers uh GM Rob palinka reportedly offered reic the job this morning Thursday morning that what less than 24 hours after another coaching vacancy opened up in Detroit with the Pistons firing Monty Williams um I just think that’s a little too perfect right you know Cleveland obviously looking for a guy to head coach that team but then suddenly Monty Williams is fired he’s gonna get paid $65 million to go away and uh oh maybe that’s a team I mean we already saw Tom Gore the owner of the Pistons coming aggressive for Monty Williams could he have done the same for a guy like JJ reic I think it’s possibility and so maybe the Lakers uh not not panic that’s not the right word but like oh hold up now there’s another coaching vac cancy we want this guy Let’s us get him so let’s get it done I think that you know probably at least uh got them going here on Thursday to make the offer and get JJ rect to uh again reportedly but I mean this is w and The Heavy Hitters reporting this that he is uh going to the Lakers second thought Shams was right Shams was right uh let’s just get this over with uh the Athletics sham shiria he said I want to say three or four weeks ago that the Lakers had been quote zeroing in on JJ reick and they were infatuated with his potential to be the coach for the present to be the coach for the future sure you know uh this this next Pat Riley was getting thrown around Shams was saying it and everybody’s like okay just a matter of time I said on the no dunk spot ah they’ll probably just wait until the finals wrap up and they’ll do it a day or two after and then seemingly out of nowhere it’s not Stone Cold Steve Austin it’s Stone Cold Dan Hurley he’s suddenly on the scene June 6th woes reporting that the coach of the back-to-back National Champion Yukon Huskies he’s the target of the Lakers search and that was a big record scratch and I was like what the hell’s going on well June 7th Hurley flies to La he is reportedly offered a six-year 70 million contract he’s like okay thank you for the numbers I’m gonna fly back home to Connecticut I didn’t finish a movie on the flight I really want to get that taken care of I’m going to think about it mull my decision he molded he molded he molded and ultimately on June 10th so basically again took the weekend announced he was staying with the Huskies so Shams was right from the Geto the zeroing in um but I’m not saying W made up the the Hurley element of it all he obviously didn’t deal was uh presented to him he flew there he thought about it but and of course we talked about it on no dunks every podcast has talked about all of you have talked about it how sincere how serious was Dan Hurley about actually pursuing that Lakers job or was he just using them to get more money to stay in Connecticut I guess we’ll never know maybe the six year 70 million offer was a slap in the face to Dan Hurley he maybe thought he was going to get more whatever the case he St stays in Yukon he’s getting a fat new contract uh and obviously then this led to the pivoting back to JJ reic who they had zeroed in on but I guess you can zero in on something and then Zoom back out and look around and then see a Dan Hurley and zoom in on Dan Hurley and try and get Dan Hurley and fail to get Dan Hurley and so you zoom back in then Zoom right back in jtic I mean last time I checked you know I went to school for radio and television I did use a camera I’m on I’m in front of the camera for the most part now but I did use a camera you can zoom in and out it keeps going you don’t get one Zoom or one zoom out it just keeps going as long as you got a decent camera so anyway uh just thought it was funny that Shams was right uh next random thought and I asked this in the form of a question is Anthony Davis the final boss um we obviously in talking about reic taking this job and we have for months now bring up the relationship with LeBron James they co-host a goddamn basketball podcast together um they never played together but they’re obviously respect each other’s basketball IQ uh um respect for the schedule of recording a podcast their love of wine all that but we’re always thinking about that but Rich Paul told Bleacher Reports Chris Haynes that LeBron was not involved in the search to replace Darvin ham a lot of the reporting has echoed that sentiment I don’t 100% believe it but a lot of people are saying hey it’s not LeBron calling the shots here I roll my eyes at that a little bit I think it would be silly not to of course ask LeBron James but what do you think and you talk to him on a podcast you buy all this [ __ ] does he know his [ __ ] uh do you like where his mind is at are you minding his game uh but anyway I bring up the 80 element because in a lot of reporting here it’s Anthony Davis’s name coming up again and again and again so let me read something here uh this is from I believe the athletic quote after meeting with the Lakers on June 15 so this is like basically the second time reic met with the Lakers reic spoke on the phone with Anthony Davis on Monday um because this is seen as like a critical relationship in the years to come the decision to choose Reddit came as the Lakers led by pinka prioritized ad’s voice in the process and ensured that he understood the shared Vision a lot of like hey ad what do you think you talked to JJ JJ ad ad JJ let’s get all of our letters on the same page oh that’s pretty good uh and I thought this was interesting because I think Mark Stein uh maybe had reported or wrote about the idea that reic maybe wasn’t ad’s Preferred Choice that could have been James Bargo he overlapped briefly uh in New Orleans a long time ago now but with ad so maybe there was some history there but again a lot of stuff about hey call AD check with ad ad you cool okay let’s go with it unless like the LeBron of it all so Anthony Davis uh do he have final say fourth thought and this is by way of stats Williams and this is now getting into like is JJ reck gonna be a good head coach uh [ __ ] if I know [ __ ] if you know because nobody knows when it comes to this crap but this is interesting at stat Williams wrote JJ reic is the sixth individual to become an NBA head coach without any prior experience as an assistant or head coach since 2010 and we’re talking about College international or MBA so who are the others during that span again since 2010 no prior experience as an assistant or a head coach in either College international Hoops or the NBA itself here here’s the list in order of when they got the job Mark Jackson mama there goes that man coaching three full seasons with the Golden State Warriors won 52% of his games he won one playoff series you know he maybe uh set the blueprint for the Warriors Dynasty um someone else on this list is going to come in and take him to the next level but Mark Jackson not bad right not not bad Jason kid obviously was coaching in the NBA Finals he’s coached eight seasons had one in Milwaukee and then he said Peace coached a couple there uh with Brooklyn has obviously coached with the Dallas Mavericks for the last what three seasons now he’s won 52% of his games has a Western Conference Finals appearance with Dallas a few years ago and now the finals appearance uh and I think maybe another playoff series win or two in there so not bad Steve Kerr Steve Kerr one of the greatest coaches of all time 10 seasons with with the Warriors only 10 feels like 30 to me but only 10 uh he’s won 65% of his games not bad uh four titles six finals appearances that one that’s that’s a that’s a positive check right there uh how about a bad one though Derek Fischer one and a half Seasons with the Knicks sort of Forgotten uh he won Under 30% of his games it did not go well no one could get the Knicks to win and Derek fer was just a you know a name in a long line of uh unsuccessful coaches there for the nicker boers and then the final one Steve Nash two full seasons with the Brooklyn Nets and then he coached a handful of other games in the third year until he was fired he won 58% of his games uh Captain Canada and he won one playoff series my point of all this is for these guys that are doing what JJ did in jumping right to the you know head seat on the sidelines there as an NBA head coach was zero experience really um it’s not bad they’re they’re all well I guess besides Steve cerr those are all point guards so reck is now the second shooting guard uh to do it no baks h what up with that uh but anyway that’s not that bad Mark Jackson Jason kid Steve KT Derrick fiser okay that’s very bad Steve Nash and then now JJ reck uh I think most Lakers fans would be pretty happy if were you know you’re winning between 52% to 65% of your games uh that’s a good start again though we don’t know I I won’t even pretend to say like oh he’s going to kill I don’t know he’s got an incredibly High basketball IQ JJ reic does he’s a competitor because if you played in the league you’re psycho every guy that plays in the league they’re absolutely psychotic competitors and by all accounts he’s uh you know he’s pretty meticulous when it comes to attention to detail right that’s probably a good trait to have but a lot more goes into leading a pro locker room can he get everybody on the same page does he have their respect is he just a dick I mean it’s in his name I don’t know uh do people like him um you know and then and then obviously what type of Staff does he build around him and that leads me to my next point my next thought help is on the way according to the Athletics Powerhouse Lakers beat Team of Shams amch bua Sab um assistant coaching candidates for reck’s staff will include former head coach and recent Trailblazers assistant coach Scott Brooks former Lakers guard Rajan Rondo ex-laker and current Dallas Mavericks assistant Jared Dudley and current Celtics assistant Sam Cassell I believe Sam Cassell had a a virtual meeting to be head coach of the Lakers as well just won a championship as an assistant so you know I think it’s really important I saw a lot of people saying this for reic to probably have someone that was at least an NBA head coach to use as a sounding board to obviously lean on uh their expertise and their experience you know Scott Brooks would fill that void he would be one of those maybe you want another one of those former actual NBA head coaches on the roster um so we’ll see how he builds his staff here I think this will be actually really interesting to see who he goes with the mixture of former players like I just listed and and and former coaches I also wonder how badass would it be if reck was like okay I’m an NBA podcaster uh I’m building an entire staff of NBA podcasters just go lean into it you know hell Steve Jones he’s he was a coach he could help with the X’s and O’s sure Nas Duncan if they’re a pair bring them both in you got a coach Thorp you got a Nate Duncan you got a Zack low you got a KOC there’s no shortage of former NBA players with podcast you can pick from them what rashed I think has a podcast Jeff Teague Haslam Miller there’s a million guys an entire staff of NBA podcasters JJ do it have the guts and I’m available okay I but I just want to rebound that’s all I want to do just get rebounds for guys kick them out uh my second to last thought this one’s a bit of a weird one but uh how about the ESPN musical chairs going on right now for the second time in less than a year after firing Jeff Van Gundy purportedly over fears that he might return to coaching which is pretty damn ironic and he did but you know what I’m getting at here ESPN has lost one of its lead NBA analysts to a coaching gig so let me refresh your memory reck started this season on ESPN’s B Team he was on the B Squad he was promoted halfway through to the A Team to replace Doc Rivers who joined ESP ESPN last off season only to leave in January for a coaching gig to coach the Milwaukee Bucks so JJ now leaving means that ESPN will have have to debut a third version of the lead broadcast team which is pretty funny again going back to the idea of like did they did they really fire Jeff Van Gundy because they were like oh man this guy that’s been here 16 years is suddenly gonna go back to coaching we better fire him before he really embarrasses us and then we’re left holding our dick um come on it was probably over money right probably over money maybe it came down from the top was that a commissioner silver saying okay enough of the old guy complaining about the refs and all that it could have been all of this could have been one of them who knows but anyway it’s just weird that ESPN now has to fill JJ reck seat but could it be for the better of the broadcast we have said as much as we love Breen and love Doris Burke and even love JJ reick the three of them together they need experience so they’re always you know behind the eightball there just thrown into the finals here with very little experience but uh lacked humor you know it was a little it was a little dry so does this open up the door for someone like Richard Jefferson who’s a lot more sarcastic a lot sillier does he get the call up he takes JJ spot and he goes with Mike Breen and Doris Burke I think he should get a crack at it I think it actually could make for a better product in terms of the broadcast um because you know I I actually think he’s quite funny uh and I think he would pair well with Breen a legend Doris a legend in her own right um but just like is a different personality where I think the other three Breen Burke and JJ were a little too similar that’s just my personal opinion but we’ll see maybe they’ll do like a rotating thing here throughout the season then they find something that clicks and they go with that but I’d like to see Richard Jefferson maybe get the chance there and then my final thought final thought if this does not work and again this is coaching in the NBA you can win a goddamn title and be fired basically uh you can go to Conference Finals and be fired basically I mean you can win coach of the year and definitely be fired because that’s a thing that always happens uh whatever happens here if it goes poorly the podcast jokes and memes with JJ as the Lakers head coach they could be legendary because already I was laughing at this one from Shan Yu who tweeted earlier today a photo of Justin timberlakes mug shot there and it says JJ reick doing better help ad reads after the Lakers start the season two and 15 had a good old laugh about that and you know I was tweeting uh this slob play is brought to you by hellofresh like it’d be funny if he had like sponsored plays that he had to say just mic him up and let him uh get his ad reads in for meundies and all that um but I mean just we are set up for Twitter gold Twitter gold especially ESP it goes poorly uh from the jump here um I guess what does this mean for mind the game podcast I would assume it’s done but what does this mean for the guys that work on the mind the game podcast the guys and girls that work on it you know JJ’s get eight million a year he gonna kick some over to Jason Gallagher how does this work does it continue is LeBron now looking for a co-host where does he go from here who should slot in okay hypothetical JJ can’t do it he’s like no I gotta coach the team but LeBron’s like but I like doing it I want to keep doing it I like drinking wine I like talking Hoops all right find somebody else who is it who should it be let’s hear from you guys in the YouTube comments and tweet at us no dunks incc on the end uh and before we go my final final thought because I said this when we were uh initially talking about the idea of JJ reick coaching the Lakers would love to see him bring back the suits for coaches on the sidelines but I would also like to see him wear the backwards baseball cap like I am right now backward baseball cap with the suit do it JJ reck we still don’t know if you can legally are allowed to wear uh a hat on the sidelines no one has confirmed that with me uh I guess I should write uh Tim Frank the NBA uh office hey can coaches wear hats uh but I’d like to see redic at least bring back the well-tailored suit come on enough half quarter Zips enough of this crap you can be uncomfortable for what two to three hours all right it looks better it looks better in pictures even like the photos I’m Looking for JJ reic to put in thumbnails and when we talk about him he’s wearing a suit CU he’s on the broadcast looks great bring it back bring back the suits bring back the Suits start the chant Lakers fans all right let’s call it there seven random thoughts let’s call it eight or nine random thoughts on JJ reck becoming the Lakers head coach if you’re just jumping on uh that happened today and oh yeah circling back to this Bulls trading Alex Caruso to the Thunder for Josh giddy I cannot wait to hear Kirby uh talk about this oh my goodness um because what I can remember is uh Trey Kirby [ __ ] on Josh giddy basically all throughout the postseason at times waren it I it was a detriment out there at times but uh now he’s on his team so you we’ll see how TK uh handles that but that’s next week uh guys click like subscribe podcast listeners leave your boy a five star rating and review next week Tuesday well who knows maybe we’ll be back Friday or Monday if some other trade happens but right now scheduled no dunks on Tuesday John Hollinger will join uh the guys from the classic Factory to get you set for the NBA draft on Wednesday and maybe break down this trade and any other deals that are being rumored I’m off to play some basketball right now and drink beers in that order trust me uh so you guys thanks for joining me really appreciate you jumping on here stay safe we’ll see you soon and embrace the day pe oh you know know what yeah let’s give you a Clipper bro you heard it here first have a great time turn up love you guys awesome always forget about Clipper bro when I’m here in the yard but there he is pointing at me in this little graphic on the side all right embrace the uh Day weekend whatever people peace you could stay ooh every day and I’d be happy every [Music] minute it’s been so long that you’re the one I’ve waited for oh

  1. Lebron was drafted 3 years before Reddick… who is now his coach. Let that sink in.

  2. I was told through some Bulls reporters that Caruso couldnā€™t get us much more than 2 picks. But was never guaranteed that even 1 wasnā€™t a first round! So Giddy is better than 2 2nd rounders!

  3. Double Drop? On a Thursday too? The fellas sending us into Friday some happy non dunking listenersšŸ‘ŒšŸ¼

  4. I literally laughed out loud when I fully knew the trade was realā€¦Bulls fans are in eternal hell šŸ˜šŸ’€

  5. Giddey will shoehorn himself nicely into Chicago. They've got a large Catholic presence there, I'm certain they can show him around.
Can JJ drink wine on the job?
    We need more drunk coaches.

  6. Think Gifdey would be great on a team desperate for a playmaker (like the Spurs). Not sure if it makes sense for this iteration of the Bulls.

  7. This "Shams was right" water-carrying bullshit can fuck off into the Sun. I am not so egocentric as to believe anybody at No Dunks gives an iota of a shit, but this is the camel-breaking straw that is going to get me off of No Dunks (and No Buffs) for good. Thanks for the years of entertaining (but rarely edifying, as you've always been mostly a collection of entertaining idiots with little basketball acumen) content.

  8. I wonder how much Lebron and JJ were talking about taking over during their new podcast? Is that tampering since he is the coach and not a player

  9. More importantly Skeets – who do you think Richard Jefferson will head coach this time next year?

  10. Because you create basketball plays in theory doesnā€™t mean you can coach grown pros for 82 games straight

  11. Okc got sexually assaulted by the bulls giving up a future all star for a career 6/3/3 role player who plays a little defensive.

  12. CLIPPER BRO ISN'T JONAH HILL!! Been listening to the pod for years and this is the first time I've watched youtube & actually saw him. My mind is blown. šŸ¤ÆšŸ¤ÆšŸ¤ÆšŸ¤ÆšŸ¤Æ

  13. Really like getting a chance to hear Skeets give some analysis. Maybe they should work in more Skeets time on the pod?
