I like his point that aside from a good playmaking guard, Wemby also needs a dynamic 4/5 who can space the floor on offense, but can also defend traditional center on defense. He sees Wemby too thin to be banging and battling with traditional big men all the time. With another interior helper, he only needs to defend them at spurts.
I know the popular opinion in this sub is that Wemby shouldn’t play 4 because the team sucked when he played with Zach, but I think we should look at that period in perspective. During that period, Sochan was playing point, and Zach completely lost outside shooting. I think he had a very long streak of games with 0 three pointers. To me, if Zach can restore his form to the same level as 22-23 season post Jacob trade, he IS the dynamic 4/5 that Wemby needs. I think that’s why Pop told Zach needs to learn to play with another big, and why Spurs gave him an extension.
The fact Wemby is learning from Crawford just shows what type of player he is. He doesn’t play like traditional five, and it’s just risky and exhausting if he is the only interior defender to battle with big men all the time. In fact, I think his defensive impact could be even bigger if someone else is battling for position while he is free to roam. After all, his advantage is his speed and fluidity, not strength or weight.
