trade rumors that are the latest so thank you to this guy for making this all possible the Athletics Tony Jones appreciate you my man thanks for having me man I appreciate you bringing me on as always and you know we always uh take our our private conversations public when we when we get on here yeah for for those you don’t know Tony and I like to talk a lot about basketball text about it occasionally but we haven’t talked too much about this draft and I’m curious to see if we have similar takes because the past few seasons we’ve been pretty much perfectly aligned on our preferences of who the Jazz should draft and frankly we’ve we’ve had good success so far in the early returns so Tony let’s let’s start here the Jazz are drafting 10th obviously no one wanted the Jazz to be 10th in the lottery and it kind of indicated a a lack of direction throughout the season of are the with jazz going to tank are they going to compete and they’re really in no man’s land but 10 kept the pick and I guess it’s not the worst pick worst draft to have the 10th pick but my question for you is how does the draft fall like who actually ends up being available for the Jazz at 10 because there’s a lot of people who think this player is going to be available and there’s a lot of people who say well that guy’s going to go five so what’s what’s your expect of kind of how six through eight or nine goes in the draft because I think one through five you can chop it up bunch of different ways and you end up kind of similar but those picks before the Jazz I have no idea which way they’re going to go so I think um I think either SAR R is gonna go one and then either SAR or Rish go two even though I think Chicago should put should pick Stephen castle at too I mean not Chicago Washington should pick Stephan Castle to um so then that would leave probably Reed Shepard at three to Houston if they don’t trade out uh then you’re looking at Stephen castle at four and probably mates buellis at five and then that’s where the fund starts right like you know um who’s going to go six to Charlotte um you know maybe we cling in go six uh with Mark Williams already there with Mark Williams there you know that’s that’s a great Pointes does does Memphis trade up like that’s the team that would die for kingan if kling’s there at nine they’re sprinting to the podium might be the fastest Sprint ever but so let’s say Cody Williams goes six that would hurt my hopes because that’s the guy I want the Jazz to pick I don’t think Cody Williams is gonna be there at 10 that’s what I that’s what I told Jazz fans the other day uh I would say say either kingan or Dalton connect go seven to Portland okay um and then what San Antonio does at eight is a major turning point so maybe they take tan at eight and let’s say kingan’s there at nine Sprint to the podium for the Grizzlies so Grizzlies take King in a nine so I would if I were to Jazz if the board Falls that way I take either Devin Carter or I would take Ron Holland no how about topit or Dillingham I would not take either of those two over those first two okay so I I I hear you on Holland because Holland I’ve had as high as three throughout this process that’s the guy I expected to go one with at the very start of this year dillingham’s a guy I’m very but I don’t foresee the Jazz taking I I’ve told the listeners have locked on Jazz the everyday as they’re called uh quite frequently that I think Dillingham has the chance to score 20 in this league but it may be empty calorie points like I I am I am just not high on Dillingham at all like what’s your rationale on him just what you said I mean for for Rob Dillingham to be a winning player like we’re not talking about putting up stats we’re not talking about production we’re talking about affecting winning yep for him to affect winning at this level at the NBA level he would have to be Trey young yeah he would he would have to be 28 points in ten assist tonight do you think sorry continue and even if he let’s say he averaged 28 points in tennesses tonight you would get to the playoffs and he would be hunted mercilessly yep and I don’t think he’s the passer that anywhere near the pass of that trade young is I don’t think that he’s the creative scorer that Trey young is so I think Rob Dillingham would at would come into the league and I think his best case scenario is that he averages 24 a bunch of years uh he’s very exciting in the regular season and he’s not all that playable in the playoffs I don’t necessarily disagree however if you ask me who in this draft class is likely become an All-Star the soonest there’s there’s a world where I would say it could be him just because of the sheer volume like to me he’s got the game of like a watered down Trey young able to create off pick and roll just not quite as Dynamic not quite as skilled and maybe the effectiveness of Darius Garland Darius Garland in his first five years has been an All-Star I’m not saying that Darius Garland is a number one option which is what you’d pick high in this draft so if the Jazz are taking him uh picking at 10 in terms of upside I at least consider it but in terms of what the jazz directionality is Danny a has been very vocal he wants big versatile guys who can play both ways he does not fit that whatsoever and that’s where I’ve said the Jazz probably won’t be interested despite my thinking that his talent level warrants a consideration at 10 it’s interesting that you bring up Darius Garland because if you look at Darius Garland and you look at how small he is Rob dillingham’s even smaller than that and significantly smaller than that yep I just don’t see how you can defend in the playoffs with Rob Dillingham on the floor yeah and so for me that makes it a non-starter and you know I don’t look at you know what you can do in a regular season you know I’m judging you know I try to judge most of drafts or you know my top 10 or whoever who I who would I like in a playoff series and it’s just for me you know when I look at Rob Dillingham I just see Lou Williams I see career six-man who’s going to score a lot of points but you know who’s not really going to affect winning so you know I I just you know if you’re small and if if you’re that small You’ better be just a great great great defender and you know like a good you know example of that is Jose Alvarado right like as small as he is he’s probably one of the better pointed of attack defenders in the league and you can’t really take advantage of him um in a playoff series you know Rob Dillingham was one of legitimately one of the worst defenders in college basketball last year yeah they were horrible Kentucky as a whole was awful defensively and you know so it it’s it’s it’s almost not like he’s small it’s just that he’s the size that he is and he just you he hasn’t defended so I I’m you know I mean this is you know so for me you know my first two guys would be you know it would it would be either Holland or it would be or it would be Devin Carter uh I think Devin Carter is is somebody who’s uh really really tough uh he’s very Dynamic on both ends of the floor he’s an offensive playmaker he’s a defensive playmaker he’s a little older he’s 22 22 years old really came into his own uh at Providence um you know can play both guard spots so I believe I believe in my opinion you can play him with Keon George and you know I just think he’s a dog and I think the Jazz need that I think they need some tougher guys on the roster um and they need some maturity and they you know and they need some point of attack defense uh and you know and they need a guy who can you know who can create Rim pressure as well offensively and I think Devin Carter can do all of that I see I I don’t disagree with your take I I just My Philosophy is go for potential so taking the 22-year-old who had one really good season he was good he was good the year before he had two’s let’s be fair he had two let me let me preface this let me preface this his shooting numbers were excellent this past year he had he had a good season the year four but his prolific numbers were a one season thing in which his his uh usage rate was so much higher because Bryce Hopkins tour his ACL Midway through the season so Tony and I will get deep about basketball this is this is how it goes but first we got to take a little break and then we’re going to talk about the 10th pick specifically the 10th pick and break down like Tony said Devin Carter we’re gonna further break his game down talk about what Tony likes about Ron Holland who Mya who I’ve also linked the Jazz to and then also talk about the percentage chances that a guy like Cody Williams T John Salon other guys mentioned are there but first I got to tell you guys about prize picks all right you guys know what prize picks is by now but if you don’t let me tell you prize Pi is America’s number one fantasy sports app with more than five million members it is the most fun and exciting way to get in on the actions while you watch your favorite sports and players you just pick more or less on two or more player stats for a shot to win up to 100 times your cash with prize picks you could turn $10 into $1,000 in a single game watching your favorite sports this summer you can make a prize picked lineup in as little as 60 seconds you just need to make a pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and you’re locked in and I like to do it on tennis during the Grand Slam Seasons because I can’t bet on basketball or at least I can’t bet on the NBA and during the grand slams I like to look at more or less Aces and on the big servers and I tend to pick more especially in Wimbledon which is coming up next but if you want more hoops and Tennis isn’t your thing when the finals are over like they just concluded the action doesn’t stop in the basketball court because on prize picks women’s basketball is just getting started with young stars like Caitlyn Clark and Angel ree looking to make names for themselves alongside great like Brianna Stewart and AIA Wilson you can win up to 100 times your cash watching them here with Tony Jones of the athletic jazz beat writer extraordinaire and just lover of basketball in general Tony you’re you were selling us on Devin Carter what why you can answer this either way if you have a preference between he and Ron Holland who you mentioned in the same breath if you were to take Carter why would you pick him over Holland if both there and then the opposite if you were to take Holland and Carter were there why would you go the opposite so I’m just kind of asking you to play Devil’s Advocate with your own pick and if you have a preference just voice it but if not just give give me both rationals as to why the Jazz would go either direction I would so I’ll start with Carter I would say that um you know with Carter I think the same on the same lines of dton connect right like the Jazz have Keon George they have sense the ball they have Taylor Hendricks you know they have a multitude of young guys to where they can play at this level one night and at this level the next night and Devin Carter and Dalton connects um I think that you’re going to get a more consistent level from those guys you know every night and you know I think that they’re more mature I think you know you need some maturity in the locker room uh and you know you can get it from 22 to 23 year olds as opposed to 18 and 19 year olds and you know you can you know they’re pieces you know I don’t think you know Devin Carter is going to be a superstar I don’t think the dton connect’s going to be a superstar but I do think that they’re pieces and I think that they’re guys uh they are guys that you know if you can Envision a championship level roster they have a chance to be important pieces uh of that kind on that kind of roster so you know with Ron Holland you know if you want to flip it he’s got a he’s got a superstar or a at least a star level ceiling but he has a you know his floor is really low as well the thing I like about Ron Holland is I I love that you will never have to tell him to play hard you’ll never have to to coax him to play hard he’s going to play hard on both ends of the floor I like that he’s a defensive playmaker uh the Jazz really need that uh I like that um you know he’s a wing the Jazz obviously need that they don’t have a natural small forward on the roster um you you like the length you like the athleticism you like to play in transition uh he plays above the box which the Jazz need um because you know I think you know Lowry and you know Taylor Hendricks are are guys that play above the Box um but he’s another guy that plays above the box and like you said Danny a you know he likes guys that you know um he likes guys that offer length and athleticism if you look at the Boston Celtics you look at the Dallas Mavericks those are the two teams that got to the finals and you see what the constant through their lineups are length athleticism guys that can get up and down the floor guys that can get off the floor when you look at uh the Denver last year you see how they built around nicolea yic positional length positional size Ron Holland he he offers that but on on the flip side Ron Holland has got to um improve his basketball IQ and you know he shot what 27% from three this year you know so you know that’s those are things that you have to look at he turned the ball over quite a bit with J Le unite you have to look look at that so you know part of me is like okay you have to give him Grace because at 18 years old you’re playing for G League unite what do you have to do right you have to try things you have to push your games to uncomfortable limits that means trying stuff off the dribble which probably results in turnovers that means taking shots that you normally have not taken uh to this point in your career which which leads to inefficiency so I don’t know that we can look at those numbers and you know accurately tell the story of Ron Holland or maybe we can look at those numbers and accurately tell the story of Ron Holland the point is you don’t know as of yet you have to get in him into your your building you have to get him into workouts you have to see how he shoots it and you have to make a determination from there now what I have heard is that Ron Holland hasn’t particularly worked out well in the pre-draft circuit so you have to take that into account as well but when you look at that and then you look at the positives which is you know he plays really hard and playing hard is a skill um he does things you know on both ends of the floor that frankly you know nobody else in the draft does you know those are skills so I think that you know he’s a little bit more of a volatile Prospect but he’s definitely a boomer bus Prospect as well yeah I I ranked him top four in all Allstar potential when I did when a episode about that what do you think of this comparison on the high end he reminds me of a right-handed version of RJ Barrett on the low end Josh oogi uh you is there any Merit to that and and is I mean that’s pretty volatile right there because RJ Barrett’s not an All-Star but he has a skill set that’s desirable like any team would volunteer to sign RJ Barrett in a heartbeat if they could and Josh kogi on the other hand scraps out minutes on just pure hustle and effort and that’s a risky proposition if you’re the Jazz I think Devin Carter best case scenario is about Derek white for those of you who are less college basketball oriented more NBA and obviously comparisons aren’t one to one but what what do you think of those as kind of just archetypal comparisons you know the funny thing where RJ um you know runs um you know he plays hard and Relentless like RJ did at this point in his career you know that was the first thing you know when you saw RJ play um in high school that’s the first thing that jumps off the page like he’s Relentless it’s like he’s breathing fire out there gets the ball gets to the basket doesn’t care who’s in front of him doesn’t care who’s guarding him did the same thing at Duke and it you know it’s translated okay to the league but it hasn’t translated like you know he’s not the player that he was in high school obviously um in terms of the level of player I think Ron is more ath atic than RJ Barrett I think he’s a lot more athletic he’s a lot more functionally athletic I think he’s a lot better defensively than RJ was um I don’t think he’s as skilled with the ball in his with the ball in his hands um that that R.J was at this point I don’t think that he’s the passer I don’t even think he’s a shooter R.J was and R.J was pretty unrefined as a shooter at this point um so you know that’s going to be really interesting I really agree with your Devin Carter Derek white like you know when I look at Devon Carter I think of Derek white like I think that you know if Devin Carter is on a championship team I think that he’s like the fourth best player but like just a really really really important piece on both ends of the floor and a really great glue piece so so do you take the risk of getting a guy that’s got more All-Star potential or do you take a just a glue guy that you hope uh is as good as Derek white that’s the proposition and then I guess final question to couple into this is if something happens someone leaps into the lottery or leaps into the top 10 like like often happens what what are the probabilities that Cody Williams or tjn Sals a available at T there’s that’s high on the Jazz wish list a lot is it I I I said it was about a 30% chance for Cody and I said like 15% for tjon a few days ago would that align with what you’re hearing well so let’s say the the top five goes like we think does somebody falling in love with Rob Dillingham in at 6 seven eight nine or 10 I could see San Antonio take uh Dillingham at eight should he not be should they not take castle at four I can see San Antonio taking Carter at eight okay I could see that as well um and you know and then that leaves clinging at nine and who do we then that leaves to Jazz connect or Ron Holland so who are you taking out of that connect dton connect to Ron holling I’m taking K yeah it’s and that’s the thing is I think the draft really starts with pick five with Detroit like do they take buellis if they don’t take buellis then how far does Cody fall because I don’t know if he’s the perfect fit in Charlotte I did a mock last night on Big Board where I would say he’s probably the pick at Charlotte at six but he could slip a little bit I would if I’m Charlotte I’m taking Cody Williams and putting him with with with Brandon Miller that’s what I did as well see this is where I said that you and I see the game similarly so that’s exactly how I picked it yesterday in a mock draft with James Barlo unlocked an NBA big board but yeah one one can hope because I I want one of tjn saler Cody Williams I’ve been vocal about that I think dillingham’s Got Talent but like I said at the outset I think it’s it’s slightly empty calorie kind of like the tail end of what Isaiah Thomas was even though he was surrounded by an unbelievable Supporting Cast that the the ability to score just wasn’t enough there I can tell you this I would love tjn salon for the Jazz yep because you talk about you know um you talk about characteristics physical characteristics he has overwhelming physical characteristics for his position 6 foot1 plus seven foot wingspan really athletic I like that he really plays well without the ball yep moves a lot moves a lot without the basketball and offensively that really is going to fit really well in will Hardy’s offense uh he can shoot it he can handle it he can pass it he defends uh I think that he’s going to be a plus Defender at the NBA level uh if T if tjan Salon is there with jazz then you know if he’s on the board you know for me he automatically becomes my number one guy yeah I’m with you there I I listed him as my pipe dream Prospect in a podcast I did two days ago well let’s let’s talk about tjon salon and the possibility of moving up because we both think he’s not going to be there along with some trades for established players such as Zack LaVine is Walker kler on the trade table next but first I got to tell you about LinkedIn so LinkedIn isn’t just the the job board that you peruse when you’re looking for a job but it’s also Tony Jones of the athletic we just talked about tjan salon and how his characteristics are that that we both covet for the Utah Jazz I am a fan Tony is not a fan he covers the team objectively but understands what the Jazz need and our in this case both of our ideas what the Jazz need is similar so humor this situation Tony there’s been rumors that the Jazz want to trade up who knows if those are true you may but if the Jazz were to go for TJ Salam what what does a package look like in which the Jazz could move up or how far do they have to move up for he or Cody Williams which we both think are off the board and both fit the Jazz well so my I mean I just wouldn’t move up because I think that if if I’m a smart team and you called me to move up what am I asking for right I’m gonna say okay well give me one of your 25 2025 draft picks yeah and my reaction if I were the Jazz would be okay well thank you very much we both tried you know we can all say we tried and let’s hang up yeah because I’m not trading to pick in the 2025 NBA draft I’m not trading to pick in the 2026 NBA draft both of those drafts um are shaping up to be very very very good and very Dynamic drafts so for me if I’m the Jazz it’s hard it’s hard for me to move up and the second reason it’s hard for me to move up is you know I mean you know we’re not looking at moving up for Game Changers right like you know Stephen Castle still on the board at five maybe you you look at it because you know Stephen Castle to me his floor is Josh Hart you know like that’s his absolute floor but if he can a you know actually play point guard at the NBA level and B learn how to shoot at the NBA level I mean you’re looking at something you know potentially very significant there um so maybe I move up for Stephen Castle um but you know the thing about it is I mean you know we haven’t talked about you know topich a lot good chance he’s there a 10 you know I’d consider him I picked him in a uh exercise yesterday on NBA Big Board because you get a red shirt season effectively with the torn ACL you don’t sacrifice you know winning or losing and you get a player who could be a point guard and compliments konay George yeah um I mean there’s some significant risk there um because of the injury history um you know it’s not just the torn acl’s it’s a couple of things you know that that that’s G on with him recently um you know then there’s obviously the question if can he shoot or can he get Rim pressure things like that but you know there’s you know it’s it’s interesting where the Jazz are because I just think that there’s a lot of prudence to either staying put or trading down um because if you can get you know if it’s connect or Carter there at 10 you know that’s a piece right you can get a piece at 14 and you know and get some more assets you know what if you really like Ryan dun at 14 or 15 you know maybe you could look at something like that you know this draft is just such a crap shoot and there’s so much that I think is going to go on because of you know the nature of the draft that you know I just think that you know trading up and sacrificing assets in this draft is probably not the greatest way to go and you know what if you need to trade up next year that’s when you sacrifice all the assets I agree I agree with you so speaking of assets and the Jazz have a lot of picks and they’re involved in trade rumors the biggest one being one with Zack LaVine the Jazz are also rumored to be having Walker Kessler on the market what can you say about some of those rumors uh do any likelihood they happen who would you go for and then I have a followup on two guys i’ love the Jazz to go for and I’m going to ask about their feasibility but let me know about LaVine and Kesler those rumors is there any any truth to those and and what would the deals look like I don’t get a sense that there’s a lot of Truth to to Zack LaVine um the the first thing that I would say is that uh the Jazz are popping up in a lot of rumors because they have cap space right like you have cap space you know agents other teams EX Executives you know they’re like oh well you know the the Jazz could be one of the teams that want to buy his Harris because they have $35 million in cap space so they can pay to buy his Harris or you know something like that so you know you’re going to see the Jazz in a lot of these you know rumors and conversations and you just have to decipher what’s real and what’s not I don’t think that Zack LaVine is real um I think that he’s got one of the three or four worst contracts in in the league 45 mil a year that’s a lot and he’s also has a uh 48 million player option uh at the end of that which of which the paperwork should already be in to pick that player option up um you know then you combine that with uh the lack of durability uh you combine that with the fact that he’s lost uh I would say a significant amount of athletic burst over the years um you know he’s not the same high flowery that he was you know on the positive side I mean he can score and he’s going to average 22 to 25 points a night make tough shots you know he could really just shoot the heck out of the basketball um but you know at the same time I mean I don’t know that the positives outweigh the negatives with him uh in terms of um in terms of Walker Kessler you know this is what I’ll say um you know the only really plausible plausibly Untouchable guy is lry marinin um you know and then obviously from there you know it’s going to take it would take a lot to to P keante away it would take a lot to Pride Taylor Hendrick away um you know but I mean people are going to call about a lot of guys you they’re going to call a lot about Walker Kessler because he played 23 minutes a night and you know he’s a guy who’s one of the very best rent protectors uh in the league um this is what I can tell you you know just from talking to you know people behind the scenes the Jazz value Walker you know they haven’t they’re not out on Walker at all they haven’t given up on him um you know there there’s value there when it when if you ask the Jazz and I think that there was some culpability on Walker’s end with how this season went for him and I think that there was some culpability on Utah’s end with how this season went for Walker and what I can tell you what I can say is that you know those two sides talked um after the season and you know I think that there was a lot of stuff that got out in the open and I think that the side both sides are okay and both sides good with each other and you know and I think that um I think that it’s natural that teams are going to ask about Walker and this is not to say that the Jazz don’t trade Walker next week or two weeks from now or whatever but if they trade Walker it’s going to be for Value because they value Walker it’s not you know let’s put it this way you know if the Jazz trade John Collins they trading John Collins to get him off the roster they wouldn’t trade Walker Kessler just to get him off the roster they would trade him for Value in return that’s encouraging to hear for Jas that’s how I feel about it I I think Kesler would have to get a really good haul uh I have two questions to close this out first question is pretty simple one is the percentage likelihood that the Jazz have one John Collins on the roster to start next season two uh Jordan Clarkson and then my next question is is there a world in which the Jazz can acquire one of Trey Murphy or Patrick Williams two of my favorite draft prospects in recent years with one being more of a hit than the other and their price tags being varying varying in in terms of how much they will cost soon so uh I’ll leave you with those couple questions to to end the show because those are two my highest prized priority priorities and then I think it’s a good question to ask Collins seems to be on the outskirts Clarkson beloved by Jazz fans but doesn’t figure into the immediate future in my opinion how does that track I think there is a decent chance that John Collins is on the roster next year because his contract is going to be difficult to move uh I think it’ll be easier to move uh at the trade deadline next year or uh next summer um I think that there is a uh pretty low chance that Jordan Clarkson is on the roster next year um um I think that you know the combination of uh his contract um becoming more tradable this summer uh combined with the fact that I think that the Jazz want to uh clear it away for some of the younger guys combined with the fact that they might draft somebody at his position um I think that that would all lead to um signs pointing that uh Jordan might not be on the roster next year uh I think there’s zero Zer chance of trading for for Trey Murphy I think there’s a negative zero chance um even in a blockbuster that was proposed for Ingram that we were both engaging on on Twitter I think that Trey Murphy is as almost as Untouchable as Lowry Markin rightfully so honestly I just hope that they valued him incorrectly yeah like if you trade from Lowry Market in you are going to have to come with an absolute Hall in order to get the Jazz in order to pry him out of the the Utah Jazz’s cold dead fingers and I think that if you’re going to trade for Trey Murphy you’re going to have to do the same thing with new orans um Patrick Williams any any better chance now Patrick Williams is different but I don’t know that I trade for him just because of his lack of durability his lack of durability is very concerning yeah but then again I you know I would trade for him because I think he’s a talented cat and I don’t think that Chicago’s used him well at all um you know and I don’t think they’ve developed him well at all like you know I mean you’re supposed to be spamming on ball on ball reps with Patrick Williams in his first two or three years and you know they’ve got him playing out of a corner because you know the the on ball rep reps are being spamed by Zack LaVine and demard de Rosen y so you know why draft him and put him in a corner for the last four years you’re preaching to the choir with me uh final final question here 29 and 32 do the Jazz take both I I I would imagine it’s unlikely yeah Al righty well that that that’ll do it with with Tony I could talk to him for hours but you know we’re supposed to keep it within 35 minutes we’re over but hopefully you guys love the content I’m always appreciative when I talk to Tony both on and off thank you guys 1. Carter will be a winner in this league….Derek White type of impact.
One of most athletic guy in the draft with a 6' 9" wingspan, and atop defender.

    I WOULD LOVE CARTER.

  2. I just don't like Devin Carter wild shooting. But I see him on the Jazz

Ron Holland defense is freaky good. He got that dawg in him. Offense IQ kinda scares me.
