16 minutes ago ESPN sources say that JJ reck has agreed on a 4-year contract to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers R pinka offered the job this morning and reic started working on a staff to surround himself with experience and the guy who tweeted that about 16 minutes ago it was NBA Insider Adrien wojowski uh WJ how did all of this come about well Rob penka the Lakers uh they reached out to JJ reic his Representatives uh this morning early this morning uh eastern time and made JJ reck an offer to become the Lakers next head coach spent several hours negotiating on that offer and then I’m told now a four-year contract for JJ reck to become the next coach of the Lakers he met with Rob palena jeie bus uh last weekend in La you know spent Saturday with them continued to talk into this week and JJ reic reemerged in this process after Connecticut’s Dan Hurley had turned down the Lakers early last week and now you know he starts to work on a coaching staff he’s had a lot of thoughts about potential candidates he might like uh to bring in around him certainly with an emphasis on experience uh and I certainly the defensive side of the ball having somebody there you know who brings a lot of credentials on that end but I think for the Lakers you know JJ reic was certainly a candidate they identified very early as a candidate you know they kind of cooled on him as they went through that pursuit of Hurley but once Hurley had moved on you know he was front and center along with James bgo who’s a very serious candidate in Cleveland now and now reck listen the Lakers know what they’re up against JJ reic knows what he’s up against he has not coached really on any level uh other than his son’s team his teams but there certainly are examples of coaches who’ve come into the league had success uh in modern times and you know previous eras there there’s certainly a lot of examples for reic to learn from but I think initially surrounding him uh with assistance that he trusts you know that uh understand what he’s up against and I think there’s a learning curve here everybody knows that but the Lakers see a tremendous upside with reic his ability to connect with players his High basketball IQ and certainly there are going to be elements of the job many of them you know that he’s going to have to uh learn quickly and certainly part of that’s going to be trial and error okay so you mentioned Dan Hurley turning down the contract offer it was six years right JJ has now agreed to a four-year contract tell us a little bit more about the terms why they are agreeing on a four-year contract in this one I think four years for someone who hasn’t been a head coach yet or certainly even an assistant coach in the league you know that’s you know about on uh course of what you would see it’s a negotiation and so certainly you know if you’re the Lakers you know you make a longer deal make a longer offer potentially to a Dan Hurley who also you know is entrenched in a significant coaching job and someone you’re trying to lure out of that JJ reck is somebody who’s very much wanted to get into coaching obviously he works here with us at ESPN but you know be becoming a head coach in a league has been a goal of his there’s been interest uh in different forms in him throughout the league both as a head coach and in the front office you know but four years for a firsttime head coach in the NBA you know that’s about the norm you’re going to see you know the five-year deals typically are more for somebody on their second job somebody who’s won at a high level and it’s much rarer you see you know the six years or even uh the beyond that like Eric spoler got but Eric spoler has won multiple championships one of the great coaches of all time you know you’re going to rate out differently you know in these kind of negotiations when you haven’t been a head coach yet but four years is about right uh for this situation I would I would think okay that makes sense still a lot to prove there for JJ reck we’ll see what happens thank you WJ breaking news right here on NBA Today JJ reck has agreed on a four-year contract to become the next coach of the Lakers we’ll talk a little bit more about that next on NBA Today locking room right we look at the NBA finals and who did we see coaching coaching in the NBA Finals we saw a Jason kid and we saw a 35y old Joe Missoula and the one thing that I’ve been hearing and seeing is how jayen Brown Jason Tatum and all these guys on the Celtics talk about how uh they relate to Joe Missoula and how he’s affected their lives outside of basketball it’s more the ex’s and when it comes down to being a head coach can JJ rdick Elevate his game put a little bit of his ego aside and go in that locker room and speak today’s language this is a different day and age UD D this is not when you and I were coming up and we under the uh Eric pooser and Pat Riley system only a few coaches are allowed to be the that best version of themselves so I applaud it you know JJ kudos to him and uh let’s see where it goes so JJ reic has been sought out after on a multiple on multiple staffs and as a head coach in a lot of situations over the last couple years he’s turned them down like two years ago the Boston Celtics said can you come be on Joe missoula’s staff and he said no I’m not ready for that I I I want to take some time away from my playing career he has some some young kids he wants to be around this is a guy this is not just the Lakers who’ve been interested in JJ reic there’s been a number of teams I know teams had him on their board as replacements for iconic coaches in this league he is somebody that has been scouted and thought of as a future great head coach in this league for a long time and the Lakers I know it may have seemed like it took a long time to land on JJ reck and they did have this this this conversation and offer to Dan Hurley but JJ reck is a very sought after head coach in this league and the Lakers are taking a chance on somebody is unproven but they’re not the only ones who were considering taking a chance on him and the fact that they did this now it I just come back to these two words that we always talk about with LeBron James basketball IQ we’ve talked about it since he was in Cleveland that is what he wants in a coach on his team and the players on his team JJ has that in Spades as as we’ve all heard in I think that’s that’s three words basketball intelligent quotient okay well I together is just a word okay we can shorten it right it’s like La is it LA or Los Angeles okay I guess you’re saying okay Dave your thoughts on JJ being the new head coach listen as Ramona was saying ever since he interviewed with the Toronto Raptors for a spot on their staff he got the bug and he thought this will be his Destiny in this game uh he’s accomplished so many other things when it comes to basketball but he really felt like he has something to give to today’s game and used all the basketball acument he’s picked up over the years from Coach K at Duke playing for a championship head coach a guy with championship pedigree with Doc Rivers a long portion of his career with the LA Clippers and you know he’s a guy who succeeded pretty much everything that’s come his way in this sport he was ahead of the game when it came to to podcasting it wasn’t just him doing mind the game with LeBron James while he was a player he was doing a podcast with Bill Simmon and the ringer and you I just think it’s a worthy gamble you know there’s risk involved he’s never coached a game other than for his children but it’s a worthy Gamble and and he’s going to step in with the confidence and I think the self assurance it takes to stand in the storm that happens almost every year with the Lakers and with LeBron James teams yeah I’m with perk on that one man at this stage of the game it’s a players League they gotta like you in the league these days it’s not when we play when they just give you a task and you run through a brick wall and you don’t ask any questions it’s a players league and if they don’t like you they’ll get you out of there so the first thing JJ’s got to do is go in there and establish relationships with these guys I know he has one with LeBron James but he’s got to establish relationships with all these guys in the locker room he’s got to make sure that it’s only one voice and that he earns their respect I remember playing for Eric sper I know the SPO that we see now today but the SPO that started was was in the film room the sport that started was rebounding the SP that started was working us out he came in there and me and Dwayne remembered that uh Eric posture but he earned our respect he earned the name POA Nostra he worked for that so JJ’s going to have to work and earn those guys respect uh perk I want to ask you this because UD is talking about earning the players respect I heard him this morning on First Take talking about how obviously they know who who he was as a player they understand his basketball mind but he hasn’t been a head coach yet how does does he go into that locker room and earn that respect from those players well I think I think he got to find that fine line of separating the to right of being the head coach but also being somewhat of a friend right you talk about being the players League I think the way that he starts is that he got to get the attention of the most important person in that locker room and it’s not LeBron James it’s Anthony Davis if I’m JJ rck that’s the first person I’m getting on the phone uh phone with and figuring things out now I already now we already know he’s probably already had conversations with BR but again this had to be a Anthony Davis High how are you going to put Anthony Davis in the best position to uh be successful if JJ reick is able to get on the same page and get Anthony dav’s attention and respect like UD D was talking about the respect Factor everyone else is going to follow everyone else is going to follow and I think UD D said something that was key and I’mma leave it at here one voice one voice it’s not
