Wemby might be the only top prospect who outright celebrated the results of the draft lottery (while dissing another team lol). Iirc zion wasn’t exactly excited when the pelicans won the lottery and same goes with sarr when the hawks won the pick. Heck, timmy might not have celebrated spurs winning ’97 but more shocked that boston didn’t win it

Every day I wake up and thank the Hill Country Fare gods for this man.
We are on our way to becoming the team he deserves, and his leadership and love for the organization will help us get there.

The Spurs know better than anyone what an opportunity they have with Victor and the pressure that comes with being given that opportunity.
The flexibility they have in this draft to truly acquire any player they want, even in a supposedly bad draft, will be a big first step in surrounding Victor with a good team and not giving him reason to consider leaving. Everything we’ve learned about Victor suggests he’s the type that would stay in San Antonio if given a good team. I would not expect his 20 year old enthusiasm to be the same in 6 years if the Spurs have not done their part in the relationship between team and superstar.
The world is their oyster this draft. They could move up to 1 without selling the house. They could sit back and make 2 picks. They could even trade back and acquire future draft assets while still adding players in this draft. With the ability to get any player they want, they should rightfully be feeling the pressure to nail this draft.
I’m sure their scouting group has worked tirelessly with that in mind. I’d be willing to bet with The Rock at La Cantera being partially completed that RC has been more involved in the scouting process/evaluation/debates than he had been in years. Pop could even have been more hands on than he usually implies he is with the draft process.
Luckily the Spurs have so much future draft capital, cap flexibility, and Victor himself may be a magnet for talent around the league, that we could afford to blow this draft and still build a championship level team. Nailing these picks would go a long way towards building a prospective dynasty though. In 2025 the top picks may be untradable. I believe the Spurs really can draft any single player in 2024 without selling the house if they so want to. Next year the top picks could be off the market after the lottery.

This is one player I could see leaving. He wants it all and he wants it now. He’s a great competitor but will be patient?
