[Slater] Warriors are expected to let the rest of Looney’s $8 mill contract guarantee though it does remain possible they eventually use his salary to help complete an offseason trade. If Warriors did release Looney & replace him with a min vet center, they wouldnt save much salary or tax regardless

Looney doesn’t have the value he might have a year or two ago, but he’s still a reliable backup Center, and $8M in salary could be useful in putting together a trade package with other assets. Bundling him with another player or two and/or picks might allow us to upgrade at Center by trading with a team with a very good backup Center. They could “downgrade” to Looney in return for other assets, and we get a legit Center for the first time in several years, allowing Draymond and TJD to play more at PF.
Or he could just be the salary filler that we need in a bigger deal.
Or we could keep him, though $8M is a lot on our payroll for what he contributed last season.
Would definitely rather keep him than cut him due to minimal savings and him being a good locker room presence, but hopefully they use that salary in a trade.
Yeah, releasing Looney means you gotta replace him. If there’s no lead on a move to get a significant upgrade, a minimum is not particularly helpful.
If warriors guarantee Looneys 8 mill, I think they trade him and/or GP2 as trade filler with either CP3 or Wiggins contract. Bigger signs to come imo.
A good sign if you’re a Warriors fan who wants another piece to complement Curry.
Salary cap is too complicated for me to even wanna begin to step foot in the fake trade game… just bring on free agency.
As I said, Kawakami is a moron
$8 million for Looney, $9 mil for GPII
that’s $17 mil which have gone to a productive playoff contributor
bad contracts add up
