Mavericks News: Latest On Derrick Jones Jr + Luka Doncic To Play For Slovenia & Mavs Coaching News

if you want the Mavs to go back to the NBA finals for the second consecutive Year please hit that thumbs up icon we’re trying to get to 200 likes on today’s video it’s really hard to get back to the NBA finals but your like and help the Mavs do it welcome into Today’s Show I am Jeffrey Cooper Harrison Grahams out today so it’s going to be me filling in Nico Harrison had his end of season interview he took the podium to wrap up the 2023 2024 NBA season for the Mavericks and it was a really good year for the Mavs obviously making the NBA Finals Nico Harris since third season and he has had a he he got a contract extension out of it too so it’s been a good year all around uh let’s just get right into some takeaways from Nico Harrison’s presser takeaway number one he admitted that Derrick Jones was going to be a priority for this team this offseason and that’s no shock I really think the map’s only path to re to repeating as western conference champions and getting back to the NBA finals is by keeping Derrick Jones now it will be kind of difficult but here’s what Nico had to say I don’t know how we’re going to do it but he’s a priority he’s 1 a and 1B we’ll do everything we can to get it done and that’s kind of been what the Mavs have said all throughout the season as they would they want to keep Derrick Jones back and if you remember the MS are now allowed to negotiate with Derrick Jones and their own free agents because of the new NBA’s uh collective bargaining agreement they can keep Jones out there Jones obviously had a fantastic season for the Mavericks uh his best NBA season of his career to date 8 and 1 12 points uh about 3 and a half boards 34.3% from three almost 50% from the field and he kind he finally found a home I think after you know bouncing around the league uh for a few years and I think Derrick Jones has admitted himself that he would like to be back but it’s going to be it’s going to be difficult to actually keep him and there will be circumstances that lead Jones away from the Mavericks the easiest path uh to keeping Jones is simple it’s trade Tim Hardway that opens up the full midlevel exception for the Mavericks to be able to keep Jones and that would allow him to sign them to sign Jones to a four-year about $55 million extension or so and I kind of think that’s what Jones is going to get on the open market I do believe he will have suitors outside of the Mavericks but I think there’s mutual interest in getting this deal done so if I had to put a meter on it right now I’d say 75% uh Derrick Jones is going to be a Maverick next season and I really think the Mavs need to keep him in order to keep this run going because the maps have very limited uh Avenues to improve their team this offseason you want Derrick Jones to be in Dallas next year type y for yes Type n for no this is going to be the pin comment on today’s show so when you get hit with the YouTube ad break go on down there and get your comment and whether you want Derrick Jones to be a m next year or not takeaway number two uh it sounds like Luca is going to play for Slovenia not sure how I feel about that one Jim Nico Harrison said that Luca is planning on playing as long as he’s healthy and he said that’s one of his biggest Joys as long as he can walk I think he will play for them oh boy uh we know Luca had a very taxing season on the body this year uh and I said this in previous shows there is no way that the Mavs were going to tell Luca no that he couldn’t play for Slovenia it just alarms me given the amount of games that he played in the 2023 24 season eight feeble World Cup games 70 regular season games 22 playoff games for a total of 100 games played guys played a lot of basketball man and he’s dealt with a lot of injuries uh I have concern but like I said the Mavs aren’t going to tell him no whatsoever so not nothing surprises me there uh he’s going to play in these games it sounds like starting on July 2nd and then if Slovenia is to qualify for the Olympics he’ll be playing a couple of weeks later in Paris or I guess in Le where they’re actually playing but he will uh he’ll be it’ll it’ll be non-stop for him so hopefully he gets a break here can get healthy uh and put on a good showing first country in Slovenia then lastly the pieces are in place for the Mavericks to to uh compete for a long time they have the core in Luca and Kyrie you have Gafford you have Washington hopefully you resign Jones you have the young bulls and omx and Hardy the pieces are in place there for a long time and here’s what Nico said about the future of the Mavericks he said I think we have the pieces we need to get better ourselves the core is intact if you look at the top seven or eight players I don’t see anything happening with that we’re always going to try to get better that’s the nature of our job now something he said that was interesting to me the top seven or eight players are going to stay intact does that include Tim Hardaway Jr I don’t see a path for Tim to be on this team this offseason he has a $6.2 million player option this year I the I think the only path the Mavs have to getting better this offseason is by trading Tim Hardaway you can keep Derrick Jones that that way and it gives you additional flexibility to do other things I don’t see a away the hardways on the roster next season maybe this was Nico Harrison just kind of telling the media what they want to hear but I I kind of think he was uh not lying through his teeth but kind of giving out some subtle hints that maybe Tim Hardway isn’t one of those top seven or eight guys and won’t be back but you guys need to stay tuned to us throughout the entire 2024 NBA offseason will be covering it make sure you turn on notice those notifications so you know whenever we publish a video this next week is going to be hectic we have round one and two of the NBA draft next Wednesday and Thursday and then the following Sunday NBA free agency begins so it’s going to be a great couple of weeks here at Mavericks today so be sure to hit that sub button if you haven’t already wanted to round out Today’s Show with some Mavericks coaching news a couple of Mavericks assistants could be on the move from the Mavericks as they their coaching staff is going to get poached after winning the Western Conference it’s always a good thing uh when your assistant coaches are up for other roles in the NBA Sean Sweeney and Jared Dudley the two Mavs assistant that have been linked with the move away from Dallas uh first let’s start with Jared Dudley who was reportedly going to be a candidate uh for JJ Ric’s coaching staff with the Los Angeles Lakers uh Dudley was on the Lakers staff with Frank Fogle when they won the 2020 NBA title alongside Jason kid now he’s rumored to a move back there uh and Dudley has been a great he’s been a uh a great assistant for the Mavericks so far he’s really been a voice of reason in that Mavericks um in that Maverick’s locker room he’s a he’s a guy that Luca kind of looks up to uh for words of advice and he’s also a guy uh that kind of talks to the refs during timeouts so he’s kind of Jason kids Le is onto the ref so to speak and here’s what Mark Stein had to say on Dudley he said Dallas is intent on retaining Jared Dudley who is a key figure on Jason kid staff it’s been known for some time that the Lakers would want to pursue Dudley for a JJ Reddit coaching staff so we’ll see it looks like the Mavericks want to keep uh Jared Dudley here in Dallas uh Sean Sweeney on the other hand is going to be interviewing for the Detroit Pistons head coaching job which is interesting because he was on the Pistons coaching staff before he came to the Mavericks from 2018 to 21 Sweeney has been with kid for a very long time dating back to 2013 uh when Jason kid was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets so they’ve had a decade basically of experience together in his resume it kind of it’s funny like how many maths connections are here 20134 with the Nets 2014 to 18 obviously with kid and the Milwaukee Bucks and then 2018 to 21 he was with the Pistons which was was uh Dwayne Casey’s team who was the assistant on the Mavs 2011 uh Championship winning coaching staff so he’s had some Mavericks ties for a long time obviously been with the team for the last three seasons he’s like the defensive coordinator of the team he’s the one that sets up the defense and gives out the defensive game plan this would be a big loss if the Mavs had to replace Shan Sweeney they would have to go find someone who is a very experienced defensive head coach because I don’t really think that’s Jason kids Forte even though the Mavs have been a good defensive team for two of his three seasons in Dallas uh they’ll have to find someone with I think NBA maybe even head coaching experience uh in order to replace Shan Sweeney on that staff because you lose a guy like Sweeney you’re losing basically half of the game there so you got to find a coach who is very good with the defensive X and O’s to help out Jason kid there on that bench if they both leave who should the Mavs hire to replace Jared Dudley or uh Jared Dudley and Sean Sweeney I think Tyson Chandler is going to be a guy that the Mavericks end up looking at he obviously uh worked a lot with Derek Lively this season he wasn’t an official on the bench coach but he was part of the development staff if Tyson wants the job I think he’s going to end up getting it but let me know down in the comments who you guys think it should be that’ll be it for today’s show thank you guys so much for tuning in to Mavericks today by chat sports we’ll have you guys all covered throughout the 2024 offseason like I said this next week is going to be crazy so be sure to hit that subscribe button and like the video if you like what you saw [Music]

Mavericks rumors surrounding the 2024 NBA offseason are beginning to pick up, specifically the latest Derrick Jones Jr. News. Nico Harrison said the Mavs priority 1A is to keep DJJ in 2024 NBA Free Agency, but a few moves like a Tim Hardaway Jr. trade will have to happen in order for Jones to stay with the Mavs. In other Mavs news, assistant coaches Jared Dudley and Sean Sweeney have been linked to other coaching jobs. Dudley is a candidate to join Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick’s staff, while Sweeney is going to interview for the Detroit Pistons head coach job.

  1. Luka is dumb and he will have a short carrer in NBA. Trade him while he is hot. He won't last long if he plays all year round.

  2. Luka needs to take some time to get healthy. But also needs to get into shape, also needs to start adding to his game and work on foot work on defensive.

  3. I don't want to see Kyrie playing form Mavs since he betrayed Mavs by taking bribes from Boston to underperform in Boston. Kyrie should play in prison.

  4. This team after the trade deadline best the #1, #3 and #4 seed in the playoffs. Keep this team together, INCLUDING THJ, and revisit the roster during next season’s trade deadline before the ALL STAR break. This solution for THJ is the best because his expiring contract is more valuable then, than now. He also gets an opportunity to increase his overall value by scoring better.

  5. I was saying this last season over and over. Trade THJ while his value is finally high as it's gonna be. Get a late first out of it(if you have to send a 2nd back than do it) get a expiring Contract and use that to resign DJJ and then add the picks you got and whatever salary(Maxi and Powell or Green if it's a great player) and make the starting SF a position of strength(Yes DJJ would become the back up 3 and sometimes 4) but that's where he will be his best. He's a very solid starting 3 but probably not a starting finals SF, And he would be a great back up and insurance for a hurt starter as well.

Kinda like a Healthy(That you could count on) Maxi in his prime. Mavs screwed the pooch cooking up some tasty dinner that had a roach in it(Timmy ) and not realizing, We probably shouldn't be cooking with the Roach, expercially with other people willing to give you something for this roach. I mean sure Bill Gates is propping up us eating Bugs for supper in the future, and some are actually liking that idea, But we are smart enough to know that that THJ Bug isn't going to end up being all that appitizing. So if we can trade him, We do it.

Now the mavs have to add picks to trade him to keep a player when they could have had a 1st and already have the money to keep DJJ.
Odds are the cooking will get you a Void with DJJ gone and minus a few 2nd round picks cause no way you can keep THJ.

  6. I like DJJ and would be happy to have him back, but I still think we need an upgrade at wing, someone who could match his defense but shoot better and/or create his own shots.
OKC just made a big step defensively by adding Caruso, plus they have a ton of cap space and picks galore. If the Mavs want to keep pace in the West, they can't just stand pat. Dumping THJ and upgrading at Maxi and Green's minutes is needed.

  7. Tobias harris, lonnie walker iv, naji Marshall.. check with the pelicans on Brandon ingram.. I like Derrick jones Jr. but with no mid range or consistent 3pt shot, you have to see if you can upgrade

  8. This team is not good enough to win Championship. Thunder has greatly improved with Curiso. So are PJ and DJ our starting forwards going forward??? Neither gave us much against the Celtics. So IMO we need a proven experienced third scorer to start at the 4 spot. Push PJ to 3 spot if you can sign DJ to a 2 yr team friendly contract do it. Forwards would be 1st new player, PJ, DJ and OMax. Probably will have to trade THJ, Green, Morris and Powell and Exum to add 2 more key pieces. Next need a backup point guard that can defend point of attack and hit open 3. Last add a 3 point shooter to spread court and hit open 3. Some suggestions, PJ, LM, OG, Thybell, Monk, Bridges, or high quality. 3 point shooter, BB, BB, Hayward, Lennard, we need 1 All Star, and 2 strong proven role players. Liv and Gafford strong at the center. Luka, Irving, Hardy plus 1 more for guards. Go Mavs.

  9. It's why Luka will have a relatively short career. It won't be age but rather number of games. Maybe he will get to 33 or 7 to 8 more years. Bring in LM from Jazz to start at 4, PJ at 3, Liv at 5, Luka & Irving. Next 5, Hardy, new backup point, DJ at 3, OMax at 4 and Gafford at 5. Add 3 more role to complete roster with 1 being a proven 3 point shooter. Go Mavs.

  10. IMO, you judge team on playoff performance. Gotta produce under the bright lights. Changes needed. Too much dead weight. Maxi, THJ, Exum, Green, Powell, Morris. Has some value, go get LM can play him at 3, 4 or 5. Plus gives us a young 3rd proven scorer.
