Indiana Pacers Postgame Media Availability at Boston Celtics (Game 1) | May 21, 2024

well I love the way our guys fought in this game um this this loss is is totally on me with 10 seconds in regulation we should have just taken the timeout Advanced the ball um and found a way to get it in and and made a free throw or two and and ended the game but uh it didn’t happen and uh we made some other mistakes but um our guys just need to concentrate on fighting the way they fought in this game from start to finish and we’ll be back Thursday Rick what to you was the root cause of your turnover issues tonight 21 I think was the number you guys finished 22 for 32 points was what I saw 22 yes that was one end sorry uh you know we we made mistakes um and so that’s an area we got to clean up um and then you know rebounding was pretty even but we did we did a lot of good things that we need to continue to do um and you know we we’ve we’ve been a tough-minded resilient team really for almost the entire second half of the year and we go to we got to continue with that and come back in here on Thursday night was there instruction of foul before that round three even though there wasn’t really a chance to do so yes but he caught the ball and he was face up so Pascal decided to layoff which was you know I understand you know that’s probably the right decision you don’t want to give up a four-point play so um you know look a lot of things had to go wrong for us and right for them they did and so you know we got to own it and we got to get ready for Thursday just obviously you mentioned the fight there certainly you know you guys had a couple double- digit deficits you were facing just what did impress you in those moments about you know in terms of their fighting their ability to come back uh in those situations well you know we just all year long the you know the our battlecry has been continue to play continue to push Tempo continue to execute um keep playing no matter what you know and um it’s it’s served us well um and it did tonight too and so uh you know we got uh it’s unfortunate we did we did so many good things in this game that uh it came down to a couple of mistakes at the end but this is the NBA playoffs and we’ve got to we’ve got to learn from it and we got to bounce back I think at the end of regulation you had taken three foul shots to their 23 or 24 um did you have a feeling in the game about how it was officiated I my daughter’s already got to sit out one semester at College I can’t I can’t ever take a whole year off uh Rick just with Tai uh that final play in regulation 5.7 just what do you see on that play and then just from an execution standpoint what were you guys kind of looking for on that one well I don’t want to get into the the exact play and what was supposed to happen they did a they did a good job guarding it pressuring it Tai obviously had to make something happen um and ended up in a in a tough spot um but he did get a shot up which is a positive um but we never should have been in that situation uh and then he had a turnover in overtime on some physicality from Drew um just how do you want him to try to hold up against that physical I know white really brings in pretty hard we had a lot of turnovers that would you know would be hard to explain you know um but this is this is Conference Finals in the NBA playoffs and so you know these things happen and and you know as as many turn turnovers as we had you know our guys continued to play and continue to fight and you know found a way to get you know the the three-point cushion and the ball and so at that point we just got to finish it off the uh the good things you mentioned that you guys did what what are they and what things will you kind of have your team hang your head on to say you know we can still come and get this game on Thursday well I mean we got down 12 nothing um took a big a big punch early in the game um withstood that fought back got got it even at halftime that was a positive I you know we didn’t start the third quarter well but we ended it well and so I think we’ll look at the third quarter the first Parts you know the first half of the third quarter and and I know there are things we can do better at both ends and we got to make those Corrections and come back Thursday last one yeah Rick asked about the final play regulation uh Tyrese had a it would it was a long three but if he had it back to do again would he might have wanted to shoot [Music] it you talk about the last the last play of Regulation he it looked like he was open for a long three would oh I you know I haven’t looked at that yet I haven’t looked at that yet but look he’ll look at it you know he he’ll he’ll he’ll make whatever adjustment needs to be made on it um look it’s it’s a it’s a tough it’s a tough situation and they got a lot of great Defenders out there and they did they did a pretty damn good job of of of Defending it and so um you know you want to you want to avoid even getting into that situation if possible and we just were unable to do that Ty can you just take us kind of through the final minute of the game and what you feel like went wrong for you guys the end of regulation uh just turnovers turnovers I mean I dribbled off my foot in transition um we turned it over on the side out of bounds uh that that you know those are two possessions that we can get free throws out of that we you know we messed up uh and then just that last play in the corner I think um you know we were going to foul but the way Jaylen caught it it was like he was just going to shoot it right away so I think Pascal didn’t want to didn’t want to foul which I thought was the the right play cuz I thought he would have got called for three shots and Jaylen just made a a big shot and then um you know that last possession uh just didn’t get a good one um you know felt felt like there was a better shot for me to get that I didn’t get when you have that many free throws as a team did was there a theme to that was it sloppy play from you guys why do you think the number got so high free throws giv up turnover turnovers yeah um I think it’s more on us I think uh you know they’re a great defensive team they got you know great great Defenders individual and team Defenders um but they’re not they’re not a team who forces a ton of turnovers you know they’re a solid solid team um you know I just felt like we had a lot of a more of them were probably on us than them them forcing them so uh we got to clean that up and uh you know outside of tonight and one game last series we’ve really taken care of the ball so um we’ll fix it in game two you said you felt like there was a better shot for you get to get I guess if you could elaborate on that I mean did you feel like the first look you got when were deep is that the one you mean do you miss you would have taken that one or is there anything else you felt like should have gone better in that possession for sure for sure that’s replayed in my head hundred times already and it over play you know uh after I get out of here but uh I can’t dwell on it you know I felt like that was probably the look for me to shoot and uh wish I did but I didn’t we had to move on over time we were right there just didn’t get enough stops when need be turned it I turned it over down there uh down the stretch but we were right there to win the game still and over time so um you know it happens and uh I learned from from it moving forward Tyrese Rick in his comments up there took what he said was full blame for not calling timeout to Advan the ball with about 10 seconds left um were you looking for a timeout in that moment and just what’s your reaction to him that’s not on him that’s not on him uh us as us as players we got to do a better job um I had two bad turnovers that that I feel like uh cost us the game one in fourth and one in overtime so um you know I know I understand he’s protecting us protecting uh you know me as well but uh I’ll take that more than more than he should uh I got to be better and I will be better in game two and uh we’ll respond the right way Ty is it more discouraging because you lose a game like this in heartbreaking fashion or encouraging knowing you were toe-to-toe and really you didn’t they didn’t win this game you guys lost it um well they did win and we did lose um I think uh encouraging I mean we know we play with these guys I mean that’s for y’all to say that we don’t you know there’s a lot of people out here saying we don’t belong here we don’t really care uh we know we belong um I think it’s discouraging just because of the plays that that happened uh you know down the stretch we feel like we were in position to win the game and just didn’t win the game but uh what I say will what I will say is encouraging is we have been trash in game ones know first series and second series and today we we played uh great for about 47 minutes um you know just didn’t didn’t sustain it for 48 so uh we’ll go back watch the film there’ll be good there’ll be bad um and we’ll learn from it and we’ll be a lot better in game too uh Ty started to harp on the turnovers but the one that you bounce off your foot what were you looking for on that or did you just kind of lose it which one the overtime or 27 seconds left when you came up the floor left wing and off your foot yes in the fourth uh I don’t know there was like three different occasions where I dribbled the ball off my foot today um I don’t know what happened um yeah it’s frustrating cuz that’s not something that happens normally for me but uh and I nobody forced it I just dribbled the ball off my foot so frustrating uh to say the least but um you know I’ll learn from it and I’ll be better in game too and then the one on the left wing with holiday and overtime just what have you seen from the physic obviously Drew is a very physical Defender what did you kind of see from him in game one how you need to attack it or what you can do with that going forward yeah I mean he’s the best defender in the NBA he has been for a long time um I was trying to get him as far to the left WI as I could so I could come downhill to my right um and I had the spin to set it up and I just tripled it off my foot uh so it’s it’s unfortunate it’s frustrating for sure but it happens we make mistakes we’re human um and uh I learn from it you know and I’ll be better in game too did you yeah Angela hey Ty uh Aaron was pretty vocal walking off the court few expletives everybody else was silent how much does this one really sting though for this team and how much anger do you guys have with how it ended yeah it’s frustrating I mean uh it of course it’s frustrating like we felt like we were in position to win the game but uh you can’t dwell on it you know um well what I will say I mean we’ve lost every game one but we’ve responded well in all all these game twos so um you know I expect that from this group I expect us to be ready to go um and yeah I mean we’re we’re all human like we’re supposed to be frustrated right now um but you can’t dwell on it like be mad about it you know but once you shower get it off you know be ready to watch film tonight and tomorrow morning and you know it it’s it’s a new day tomorrow and uh at the end of the day if we won tonight we weren’t winning the series automatically anyway so uh we understand there’s still a lot more work to do and uh we’ll respond the right way thank you Pascal I guess we get the turnover question over first and what kind of just happened on that inbound play um you know how much of a grip did you feel like you got on it basically just what what transpired there from your eyes um yeah no I mean I think it was a tough one um I don’t know felt like I was grabbed but then you know I felt like I touched it I didn’t know if he touched it I mean it was just a mess at the end I’m just trying to save it but yeah unfortunate play for sure you you didn’t want to foul on Jaylen when he caught it cuz you thought it’d be a four-point play I presume at that yeah I mean he I I thought you know as soon as I got to him um I was a little late because of the screen um you know he like he had like he was going up so I didn’t I didn’t want to do it and then when I thought when I was going to do it it was too a little too late so yeah it’s just one of those where it’s like if you if you have an opportunity to do it you do it but it was just a judgment call like I I mean I felt like he was going to this motion like he had a pump fake like I didn’t want to you know F then and it’s a tough shot I mean like I was in front of him you know um maybe I could have contest contested it you know better but it was just yeah tough play 21 turnovers and 23 fouls how much do you feel like you guys beat yourselves tonight uh yeah obviously a lot of turnovers on Force turnovers too um you know like yeah and a lot of fouls so yeah I think we we know we we got to do better and we will be better at that like especially um you know cuz we don’t we don’t turn the ball over as much um so we got to do better at that as a team um and yeah try try to play without fouling I mean I don’t know how many fouls we got on the other side but um you know like we we just got to do a better job of just not falling uh how just how do you come away from this game because you know you guys did a lot of good things you responded from the big lead they had but obviously you know the turnover is late what is the feeling that you have or kind of want your teammates oh I mean yeah it sucks obviously I think it should it should it should suck um but I think you know we did a lot of good things we got to go back um get better um and and at the end of the day as much as you know it hurts you know it’s one loss so we just got to move on from it and um and we have another opportunity you know this game is they they getting you know coming at us fast and um we just got to move on from it just at the end of the day is one loss and um and keep our heads up and and and just correct some of the things that we didn’t do well and trying to continue to get better and and we think it’s going to be a long Series so yeah just just have that mindset I guess to kind of stick with that theme what do you feel like you guys did particularly well when you know you were able to stop their runs I mean or able to respond certainly you were down 120 out of the gate and managed to make that up same deal in the third quarter what what did you guys do well in those periods uh know playing on our Pace you know um playing fast and and you know sharing the ball that’s that’s something that we got to continue to do um and and um yeah just being us like at the end of the day like I just feel like when we us and and we play at our Pace you know it’s it’s hard to to defend um and and obviously they’re going to go on runs they really good team um but we just got to um sustain those and um just continue to play and and do us want to ask you about Tyrese uh you know he was shooting it and shooting it with confidence feel like from three and stuff just in general today just how did you uh what you see from him just out in the court and how how did he kind of help set set the tone for you guys when you guys yeah he’s he’s you know he’s a heart of our team like um setting the pace up um setting set us setting us up for you know just the way we play um and and he has great vision um obviously we know what he can do um as a shooter um but but yeah like he’s he’s the engine for us and um he get he gets us going um and and yeah like we’re going to need him to continue to be him and and um we just got to play off of him Pascal what do you see from their defense looked like they went to Zone at one point for a little bit and you know up the pressure in the second half what did they kind of do that led to some of the droughts you guys had um I I I mean they good defensive team you know the number one seed um they we know that they’re going to you know put a lot of pressure a lot of switching um but like I I just think that you know like as long as we continue to do us like we’ll be fine miles can you kind take me through the last minute from your perspective what kind of got away from you guys in the regulation um uh I mean it was it was unfortunate I think that we we made our own breaks we made some great offensive plays and then you know towards the end you come down to the last second obviously JB got the ball in the corner um you know we originally want to foul but I think Pascal made a decision he got there a little late you know I didn’t I think he I don’t think he want to give up a four-point play so obviously you saw he did try to get out the way and and um you know J JB hit a big big time shot and um you know we weren’t able to recover in the overtime turnovers and the fouls do you almost feel like you guys beat yourselves tonight more than anything yeah that’s that’s that was my message you know after the game as well you know I think that a lot of people are going to talk about the free throw discrepancy but at the end of the day when you have 22 turnovers and you know Big Time turnovers you know I really think we um you know we showed our we showed our age a little bit tonight you know what I mean I think um you know being a youthful team being our being at this high stake of a game you know I think um those uncharacteristic mistakes just uh made their way out and um you know we just uh we go over look at it tomorrow we just going to have to get right back going because you know right back on Thursday to just to continue on that track I guess is there anything that you could point to as to why I mean you you certainly mentioned youth there but um is there any other kind of trend as to what explains you know the turnovers why that became an issue today when it hasn’t been one no I can’t think of anything off top of my head just a lot of uncharacteristic turnovers you know what on just kind of the flip side of that you guys obviously you know fell behind a few times managed to Rally back I mean just what impressed you guys about what you were able to do when you fell behind and were able to Rally same thing we’re doing all season I mean um I guess Poise is a good way of putting it you know we kept Our poise even when things went good or bad so you know it’s encouraging but you know at the end of the day you know we weren’t poised enough to win the game um you’ve been such a weapon in the pick and pop and the pick and roll with Tai um with their defense and how they try to stay so solid switch some stuff just what kind of openings did you see tonight that maybe you guys can work on and use going forward every game’s going to be different I mean usually when fives are on me that’s usually my time to get loose and whatnot but you know teams pick up on that and start guarding me with other men and then um you know three fours and then sometimes they’ll guard me with their guards and then that’s when I have to make my way you know in the paint and make our make my hay there so um there were definitely some more things I could have done on the stretch to be more aggressive you know whether it was crashing a little more ducking in a little bit harder but um um I watch I watch a lot of film and I really do I mean it’s not really there really hasn’t been much I haven’t seen this league just what do you feel like Pascal was able to bring to you guys kind of in that second half I think he scores 18 of his points there yeah I mean I think he was he remained patient he knows the ball’s going to come his way um you know once once they switched the match up and put Horford on him it was more so his time to you know kind of get more involved in the actions and whatnot and he was able to um deliver some big time shots you mentioned the Poise you guys have been able to turn the page and uh come back after some tough losses at times this this postseason uh what has allowed you to do that what do you think you guys like sort of draw on in after those games um well just fact that we all have a common goal of on you know at the end of the day you know I think that early in the playoffs when we got tested a little bit we kind of started to separate a bit and we nipped that in the bud in that first round it’s only brought us closer so as disappointing as tonight’s loss was you know I think that we obviously did some encouraging stuff but it’s one of those things that’s going to bring us closer as well you know you look go back to the Milwaukee series you know we we lost that game one you go back to New York we lost that game one in a close fashion as well so um it’s definitely a long series I think that’s the message that we’re going to continue to convey um you know we just got to um like I said you know watch the film tomorrow go over our adjustments and be ready to go next game last one yeah how difficult is that when you know you kind of had a game late like this and Let It Go to kind of stay together for the rest of the series it’s not that difficult to stay together brother I’m tell you right now we’ve it’s been a very long season had a lot of highs a lot of lows and you know ain’t going to stop here

  1. We played great and blew it at the end. Now that we see what we can do, let's tone down the TO's, make smarter plays and passes, and we can steal the next one. Keep playing with confidence, we can do this. Go Pacers !

  2. Rick wanted to call out the refs but coaches dont make that much money. If I had the money I'd pay the fine for him. 30 free throws for Boston, 10 for Pacers. Ridiculous!

  3. Wow! I'm a Kings fan and I can tell you we lost many games to stupid mistakes, but now I see we're not the only ones. Tyrese! What are you doing! Taking that 3 with a minute to go and 15 on the shot clock.. then you turn it over.. and what is the coach thinking.. advance the ball .. call a timeout. It amazes me the lack of time management in the NBA. I guess it's only done in the NFL and NHL.

  4. embarrassing loss. the chance of losing with 8.5 seconds to go and a 3-point lead WITH THE BALL is 3.7586% (just call it 4%) …. just shameful. Or something like it hasn't happened in the last 243 times that same situation was present. The series is over because you just cannot come back from something like this against the Celtics, the series was defined in Game 1. Look for a convincing loss to the Celtics on Thursday, Pacers quickly down 0-2 and this ain't the banged up KNICKS. They really screwed up about 4 different things in the last 37 seconds. With less than 10 seconds on the clock with a 3-point lead AND the ball, if you have a time-out left, you use it to get the ball down the court to your side, no question about it, it's a no-brainer, it's in the book and Carlisle admitted he f-ed it up. You then just make sure you have a tall player inbound to a tall player on the court and simply play keep away, game over every day of the week. Instead Carlisle pulls this nonsense allowing a ridiculous play call to unfold where Nembhard inbounds to Siakam who is cutting over by the right side of the Boston Basket (how ridiculously insanely stupid is that?). Then you still have 5.5 seconds left tied WITH THE BALL , and you shoot the ball completely covered up beyond the 3. TAKE A HIGHER % shot for God's sake. Getting to someone who can hit a 15 foot jump shot,,,,,WHAT DID WE WITNESS??? I need to be in the Witness Protection Program because someone needs to protect me from witnessing this garbage of a gift to the Celtics.

  5. Ty has got to stop backing up all the damn time. You dont respond to pressure by backing up. He needs to attack the basket more.

  6. For the last two days everyone has been saying we were going to get blown out. We had no chance. Just imagine how it will look when things start to fall into place. Proud of this team! Fought hard to the end. Regroup and get game two!! Go Pacers!!

  7. Take a deep breath. Learn from it. and come back with a vengeance on Thursday! It took 22 turnovers by us and and 20 more FTA for them and a Herculean shot by Brown at the end to force OT. WE CAN WIN THIS THING! GO PACERS!!!

  8. People in these comments need to relax.. yes we choked the game away. But it's a learning experience for our young team. We can turn this around easily. The fact we're here should be making you proud enough. Nothing about tonight was "shameful." It was upsetting but we're in such a good place for the now n the years to come.

  9. Have faith pacer fans.. tough loss but we have such a great young superstar. He WILL learn from this. Don't run him out of Indiana you clowns.

  10. This is a tough loss !! It seems typical !! It just always seems when it comes to the Pacers in playoffs !! Never good enough !? 😔thru the years in NBA !! To win a title !?

  11. It’s a heartbreaking loss though winning to Celtics is not far fetched, you all have positive learnings towards losing. Cheers Pacers, you still did a good job, still a good game!

  12. It's always been a learning curve for this team. Siakam and to some extent Turner showed them on G1 that hey, we can score on this mfs[Milwaukee], so get comfortable. Again on the Knicks series, they learned that you got to be up on Brunson's face to defend him. But the one thing we never learn is not making the right decisions on big time, not fouling Middleton, not calling a timeout to get a safe inbound play and get FTs[Coaching staff decision making is a bit 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣]. Let's go Pacers! I know we can win it next game.

  13. Great game despite the loss…all just extra reps for the young guys at this stage…should continue to attack Horford in the series

  14. Embarrassing finish. Officiating again, super lopsided. How does the best offense in the league shoot 6 FTs in regulation?

Keep in mind, we were down 0-2 to the Knicks. I felt way less confident against the Knicks after Game 1-2 than I do against the Celtics matchup. They had virtually no answers.

  15. A errant inbound pass cost the Pacers the game in regulation up 3 with 8 seconds left. Terrible mistake at the wrong time. That and too many turnovers. Regardless, my boys played well and should have won Game 1. The Celtics didn't beat them. They beat themselves.

Fix the errors; come back a win Game 2.

  16. Learn from this and win this series. Young team, a lot of mistakes but the game was ours. Love this team ! We can do this ! 💙💛

  17. We chocked the game away at the end almost won and we still had 20 less free throw attempts take away 5 of those attempts pacers win
