is JJ reic going to Detroit what is going on less than a week away from the NBA draft all heard on ESPN radio and seen on ESPN television along with Michelle smallman CC off today I am Evan Cohen good morning Smalls good morning Evan how are you well I am um good but I am anxious for one thing yesterday on our show you made a point to say you know I have not been injured in a while you are notoriously clumsy you came into our very first ever show on September 5th 2024 with a black eye you fell you hit your eye you had a black eye on your self-inflicted self-inflicted W you said you know I am clumsy and that’s what you came in with and you have constantly added to that that resume of clumsiness and you made a point yesterday saying you know I haven’t been injured in a while and then and then it happened last night of course it did I could sense it coming you know like sometimes when you can sense a storm on the horizon I just knew something was going to happen so I didn’t what happened cuz I don’t know what actually happened I also didn’t think it was gonna happen so quickly I didn’t think it was going to be that same day um so last night I went on a run with some of my friends here in New York City on the wests side highway and and for those who don’t know it’s the stretch of highway that’s along the river and especially this time of year it gets very crowded it’s like Club wsh because everybody in New York City is out there a Westside Highway Westside Highway that’s what we call it Club literally lived there for a decade and then never referred to it as that oh that’s all my friend we we say run on the wsh never knew that okay anyway wests Side Highway for those paying attention um so anyway it was very very crowded last night a beautiful night in New York City to go for a run there were many run clubs that were also out there so it’s big clusters of people that you’re trying to navigate through so my friends and I are running and this run Club kind of like runs in us and around us because they were faster than us as I’m running you know you push your elbow back to run the a girl ran up and collided with me and she was running like this and I’m put my arm she jammed her cell phone right into my elbow and it immediately sent a shock wave through my hand and my hand went numb for like a half hour and now I have this huge bruise on my elbow and I’m wondering if it’s broken you think wait you don’t think that’s just a funny bone thing you think you may have a broken elbow it hurts so badly and it is cuz you got hit by a cell phone running yes so I didn’t even do this to myself but this is exactly the type of thing that would happen to only me Chris porzingis in the NBA Finals had an injury that literally we couldn’t pronounce and that CC somehow was able to pronounce yes it he’s now out with a surgery after that that he’s out for months you are now next basically we’re going to have an inj how do you even I I would love to know the medical definition of hit by a cell phone in the elbow while running I don’t know but I’m sure there is some sort of like cellular elbow Elbo you know I don’t know cellular elbow all right tweet us at onsports ESPN we need a medical we need a medical assessment of the smallest injury what that actually would be called only you did you like fall to the ground at all out of pain I went ow and she the woman apologize she kept she was oop sorry and kept it pushing I was like I think you broke my elbow yeah she she was unbothered by it only you I might have cracked her cell phone that’s how hard the Collision was you your elbow cracked her cell phone or her cell phone cracked my elbow did you keep running after that well we stopped for a second cuz I was I was like guys I can’t feel my hand this is very bizarre and your friends laughing at you or feeling for you course they’re well both they’re like are you okay I was like I think so and they’re like only you you literally jinxed this yesterday no I didn’t jinx it I just knew it was going to happen you predicted it it was it was an intuition that this was going to happen and it did only Michelle sman ladies and gentlemen at onsports ESPN if you want to tweet us what a medical definition of being hit in the elbow by a cell phone would be cuz what would do we remember the Chris ABS porzingis medical I will tell you diagn stand see if you can figure that out because we need that for your elbow and I’m not making fun of porzingis I’m just saying that the medical uh diagnosis of porzingis was so odd that none of us had ever heard what was it um it’s loading standby okay it was a torn medial retinaculum that allowed dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon and that happened in game two and yours happened on the wsh uh so Monty Williams gets fired yesterday by the Detroit Pistons now only jovante Lawrence our resident Pistons fan from Detroit cares about the Pistons angle of it yesterday until more now comes out that makes this a really juicy story all of a sudden and Adrien wowski of course our ESPN senior NBA Insider was on Sports Center WJ was with Scott vanpelt last night talking about this if Monty Williams had been available in the marketplace to the Lakers you know when they started this search even a month ago three or four weeks ago perhaps uh he might meld into this search process Monty Williams was blindsided today uh with his dismissal which came from the owner Tom gor who just a year ago gave him nearly an $80 million contract recruited him to to take the job to move his family including his wife who had cancer his sons who were in high school to Michigan to undertake this rebuild with him and uh just a week before the draft and almost two months after their season ended it was the owner today who fired Monty Williams I’m told that he is not ready to necessarily just jump right in to another job another process that he wants to coach again uh but I think it’s pretty raw today despite the fact that he walked away with over $65 million uh in this he wanted to coach a team build a team and and now he’s out okay that is very interesting from W so we played out when this happened yesterday a lot of different scenarios and let’s be honest our scenarios all were hovering around the Los Angeles Lakers one of the most relevant teams in all of sports with one of the most relevant players in all of sports LeBron James of course what’s interesting is it doesn’t seem like this has anything to do with the Lakers and that’s what we were speculating that maybe because there was interest prior and now they have a vacancy that somehow conversations were had and Monty Williams could be on his way to LA but could it have something to do with the Lakers in a roundabout way with somebody that actually technically based on lack of employment there nothing to do with the Lakers could this actually be J.J reic wanting the Piston shove go on well I’m throwing a couple of things out there so when you look at these two jobs one you have to win now you have to win a championship this year you’re the head coach of Los Angeles Lakers and even more so because the Celtics won a championship JJ Reen his first year as a head coach I don’t believe can really think oh I’m just going to do it easily win a championship now has it been done yeah tyo did it in his first year as a full-time head coach tyou was a longtime assistant right uh Steve cerr did it in his first year as a head coach Steve cerr was a general manager working for teams okay so it can be done I don’t think the Lakers have a team that it could be done with right so I think JJ reick would rightfully look at that and say I believe I can take take over learn how to coach do a good job with this team grow myself as a head coach and then alter the team over the course of time to potentially win a championship but maybe not right away but he has to win right away one is that the other one is I can now build a team I could grow if I stink initially as a head coach it’s really not going to matter as long as I’m getting better every single game which why would you think he wouldn’t get better every single game one that in the Piston job there’s no pressure plus maybe I’m making a leap but with Tren Lon running the team a Duke guy my guess is they must have some sort of connection
