BREAKING: The Cleveland Cavaliers Hire Kenny Atkinson

kaver faithful welcome on into the Cleveland pulse YouTube channel it is late breaking news Kenny Atkinson hired as the next head coach for your Cleveland Cavaliers officially official from wos today and other sources haven’t heard anything from the team officially but it’s a formality at this point Kenny ainson will be your next head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers following in the footsteps of a JB staff who was dismissed earlier this off season we’re going to talk base numbers with him we’re going to talk outlines and philosophies but I want to start with initial early reactions Justin Kenny tinson is your new Cleveland Cavalier head coach yeah I like that you get two uh your GM and your coach are now both Ka so it’s pretty funny there we were almost had JB 2.0 um yeah no very uh very long and I think drawn out process here by the Cavs uh I think it took a lot longer than a lot of us would have liked but at the end of the day you come out with the I think the first name that was ever mentioned for the Cavs once JB was fired um and it essentially boiled down to him and the second name that you heard um after the Cavs had an opening and so you know it might have been a long process and you know there was some back and forth between the two candidates which was never a bad thing when you have to go back and forth and try to really nail down which one is going to be the guy um I think there’s probably a lot of good reasoning behind uh Kenny ainson over bgo but um again I think it was one of those things where like you were always under the impression that one of those guys is one a and the other one is one B so you know we’ll see what goes on there but a lot of good things coming out of the ainson camp obviously his time in Brooklyn where he did get you know votes for Coach of the Year uh for taking to the playoffs that year and uh you know spending some time on the championship Warriors team that had uh Steph Curry Klay Thompson and Jordan P taking an absurd amount of shots together so again another thing to just kind of um be able to look at and kind of assess what might uh be coming over with him so yeah I like it I I think it was between him and bgo and I don’t think You’ go uh very wrong with either one I think when you talk about the timeline it’s really just a complication of how many parties were truly involved here not that it’s a bad thing not that it’s a good thing just that it was the reality of the situation you have a front office who it’s not their first head coaching search it’s not Kobe alman’s you know first hire as the general manager you know he’s had some experience doing this you hear reports that Dan Gilbert is heavily involved you feel like it’s an inflection point for this franchise he’s going to be given his input ultimately as the owner and then you have Donovan Mitchell who yeah he’s still under contract but we have to you know kind of iron out the deals of his extension we want to keep him pleased in that same thought process Logan we’ve talked a little bit off air here we’ve talked a little bit via text this off season this was kind of our preferred candidate I’ll say that out loud that was my thought process from the beginning Atkinson wouldn’t have been too upset with bgo but at the end of the day it is Kenny Atkinson getting the hire for the Cleveland Cavaliers what are your thoughts yeah I mean I saw a tweet earlier today that told me all I need to know with Brooklyn Kenny Atkinson did a lot with a little JB bicker staff did a little with a lot and I think Atkinson is gonna have the tools at his disposal this time to make things work uh we talked last year how many times Jeffrey did you and I text each other saying what ises this offense you know literally I think Atkinson especially coming from a golden state program where it’s all about body moving Klay Thompson’s constantly moving anytime you can get a guy that’s been in the mind he gets pieces of what’s Steve cerr is doing as a head coach and you can bring that over to Cleveland I think that’s a great thing I think we’re going to see an offense next year rejuvenated we’re going to see more body movement not I don’t I would even say we were bad at sharing the basketball there would just be long lapses where it felt like it was Donovan make a shot or bust you know and I think coming in next year I think with a guy like Atkins with an offensive mind that he has the motion he has with an offense and he had that before he went to Golden State I I’ll add that too I mean that Brooklyn team D’Angelo Russell it was uh it was a throw to the post and then actually run down the middle of the paint it wasn’t a space out over here and ISO it was we’re constantly moving we’re getting the best shot available that that’s a big thing for me I mentioned Atkinson was my guy I thought bgo I just think it was a little risky with him yeah he’s got a great offensive mind he comes from the Spurs uh earlier in his career but what he did with Charlotte turned a lot of people off to him and to me I thought that people talked about oh lateral moves all the time I thought burgo would have been more of a lateral move do I think it would looked better offensively sure but the biggest thing ultimately you gotta be a coach that’s for the team and I know burgo had a lot of issues with Lamela Bal now Lamela Bal is a personality let’s not get it twisted you know and but at the end of the day we have some personalities on this team we have a big star Donovan Mitchell we’re trying to keep happy we’re trying to get on the books and and be a part of this future with the Cavaliers you need a guy that W is GNA be a guy that your star can get along with and two a guy that’s also going to call out that star while keeping the culture right I think Atkinson having that tough-minded background that he comes from with a tough-minded team like Brooklyn that was a Brooklyn team that had no business being in the playoffs they were just more physical than you they just outran you they out hustled you they were quick they were fast they were shooting lots of shots getting as many shots good shots that’s I think Atkinson can add a whole lot to this cavaliere team it’s definitely a name that’s not sexy I mentioned that last week it doesn’t have to be sexy it doesn’t have to be cool and cute or whatever I just think it has to be right and Justin and Jeffrey mentioned the timeline how long it took fact of the matter is how quickly did we hire John beine I don’t know how quick it was to be quite Frank but it felt like one of those moves where like oh that’s a surprise didn’t even really hear his name floated around what I can what I love and what I can really get behind is the fact that we heard the candidates they had their trials they had their their auditions and their interviews and all that jazz and at the end of the day through the whole process we wound up with one of the names that were rumored and I think that’s always a good thing that means you did your homework that means you did the proper things and I think as a front office and the Cavaliers I’m going to say and reluctantly say I think they got this right uh time will obviously tell come October but I’m liking Atkinson taking over the wine and gold oh yeah the commentary about this hire 12 months from now should be interesting to you know it’ll be interesting to look back on a video like this and just see who was right who was wrong and just what the general expectations were which we’ll talk about throughout the rest of this offseason of course but I want to talk a little bit of just some Baseline knowledge here but almost painting a picture so let’s just look at ainson seven years as an assistant before getting that first head coaching gig spent four years with the Knicks and then three years after that with the Hawks then you see you know almost four full seasons he gets 62 games in that final season with Brooklyn but the season everybody talks about that Logan even you referenced your 2018 2019 team 42 and 40 and they make the playoffs they lose in five games games but what had me thinking what did that 2018 2019 roster look like I’m well aware that the cavaler faithful will remember that that team had Jared Allen and it had Caris LeVert which doesn’t hurt when you’re looking for a you know a future head coach and someone who’s already coached some of these guys who you’re going to be taking over the roster with is your assumption let’s go and look at the totality of that roster and there is not a lot here there’s really not I mean a young Jared Allen deari Carroll crab Ed Davis our good buddy Ed Davis Spencer Den witty you know a bunch of guys who don’t really it’s a mishmash of random players it doesn’t really look like a a playoff yeah you have D’Angelo Russell but you know Levert Ronda H Jefferson I’m almost certain had a pretty good year that year um you know old buddy Joe Harris not a star studded lineup of guys so definitely interesting to kind of see like what you said Logan did a a lot with a little and just to see how that translates to this roster that he’s stepping into now on paper a much much more talented roster couple more pieces of information here I want to look at his stat Muse you know just his averages for the games that he’s coached so yes he has 118 189 record in his coaching career but I’m more interested in this down here points per game keep going you can just read it for yourself here what really really enticed me looking at this is this is a guy who coached 1617 1718 1819 1920 so going into this season he will have not have been a head coach for four years in his average those four years he attempted his teams his Brooklyn teams attempted 35.2 three points a game three-pointers a game four years ago the Cleveland Cavaliers of last year attempted 36.8 three-pointers in a 20 in in the 2023 2024 season so that’s only you know 1.6 threes more four years after the evolution of the three has been focused and more highlighted every single year lot of interesting little tidbits there does anybody have anything to go off of that I actually have one thing I just thought about the top of my head right now think about a guy like Mike Brown sure right I think overall a lot can argue early in his career a lot of his success was due to LeBron James A lot of people and I’m not saying that’s us I’m not saying that’s Cleveland but a lot of people said Mike Brown success is due to LeBron James and you know he goes off and goes to the Lakers fails miserably they start like ow and six whatever it is they fire him immediately Mike Brown finds a little spot in Golden State becomes an assistant under Steve Kerr goes over to Sacramento and gives them more playoff success than they’ve had in what two decades almost since since O2 the vlat dvas days and Mike BBY and P sakovich those types of names and characters I think a lot is said for the fact that he comes from the Golden State Warriors are old friends in Golden State sure I agree I get it but I think a lot can be said I think a guy like Atkinson showed that he could do it one year and at the other day those three seasons he got better exponentially those three seasons before having a little under 500 season the final campaign but he goes to Golden State he gets under Steve Kerr he wins the championship he learned little things bits and pieces wait a minute did he win a championship or has he been there for two years I can’t remember now who not that it matters he’s playing with the championship pedigree team okay right he won the championship with uh Steph actually won his uh yeah 22 wasn’t sure yeah he was there for the yes he was there for the most recent Championship yes because after that no no no the season before Logan as an assistant he actually which knock on wood I don’t think this is the case because wo reported but I think wo reported that year the year before they won or the year that won that they won the championship he got offered the Hornets job during the playoffs I think it was the year they wanted because the the postseason started I think the Hornets somehow maybe interviewed him before the postseason was over and he agreed to be their coach and then the Warriors won it and then he backed out of it and spent one more year with them right and like I said Mike Brown was spit out of the Steve cerr Factory right and now he’s a highly respected coach I think he just signed his extension right for another four years to Sacramento I get they had a bit of a Down year last year maybe but he that Sacramento team is a sorry team I get they made that trade at s Halbert and R in devont sabonis I hear you I’m with you on all that but I do think there’s something to be said for coming from Steve K Camp you take bits and pieces he’s a guy that kind of has a similar mind is definitely not the word Steve Kerr is a great mind but definitely like a similar idea of what is a good basketball offensive possession in today’s NBA I think he already had that then he gets to pick the brain of Steve Kerr that’s all I’m saying absolutely I mean anybody from a good coaching tree I know bergo has been around some other you know good to great head coaches in the league as well but just some of the headlines that you kind of see you know surrounding ainson today on Twitter I think it’s interesting like we just talked about his last full season in Brooklyn they went 42 and 40 they had zero All Stars 109.2 offensive rating and2.2 points per game and that was four years ago um he’s kind of been credited for turning Brook Lopez into a more advanced shooter you’re hoping that that’s something that he could you know translate over to Evan Moy you know that Donovan Mitchell had some say so in this decision Justin anything kind of coming to the the front of your mind here with all this discussion yeah I mean it’s G to be interesting I kind of just like jokingly said like oh does this mean we’re gonna see Caris lbert never get traded you know um and it it will be interesting to see you know um we saw some tweets to say don’t like tie the hiring of ainson to LT or Allen it doesn’t mean that they really played a factor or that they didn’t but um again I think a lot of the conversation does come around less of the coach with this team and more about the offseason moves that are going to be pending after the signing of this coach and you know we could talk Atkinson and all of his uh you know places he’s been obviously he’s been under Mike dantony uh buen Houser and uh Steve Kerr but for me at this point like now that’s one Domino that’s Fallen that obviously needed to happen I’m glad that there was a lot of conversations that pointed towards Donovan having um you know at least you know knowledge of who is going to be in the finals or who might have been the running candidate from the very beginning so um all that sounds fluid and whatnot so good stuff there but now it’s on for the next Domino and and honestly I just I kind of look at it from both sides because you see an interesting mix of fans from across the league when somebody gets hired I think that a lot of people who have been Nets fans for a while are kind of happy that ainson got a second shot maybe that they they felt like he never really got a fair shake with Brooklyn and you kind of see some Warriors fans too you know that maybe weren’t fans of his defensive scheme but have acknowledged that he is a guy that could you know Excel on the offensive side of the basketball so there’s going to be a lot to talk about ‘s still news to come out because this is just a agreement discussion at this point that it’s finalized I don’t even believe that the contract numbers are they might not even be set yet still could be something that both uh parties are talking about so you get to see the how many years that you know we offered them for potentially you get to see compensation sometimes you don’t with coaches allegedly um because I think that’s important like what bothers me about head coaching um decisions and hirings is that I feel like the W bomb comes out Shams you know is on Twitter and then everybody kind of forgets about all the extra stuff after that like personally to talk about another head coach hiring around the league I don’t whatever you think of of JJ rect as a head coach and him getting opportunity I would never have given him a fiveyear deal I think that was if you want to call anything ask nine on on the Lakers part it’s that um especially when you when you have never coached in the NBA before at any level basically besides you know what else maybe he coached AA ball or whatever who even knows for a weekend so we’re it’s gonna be interesting to see the facts and figures here um I’m sure there’ll be more you know surrounding leaks did Donovan Mitchell sign off was was Dan heavily involved and and did he sway the uh the ultimate decision because Justin and Logan I’m just telling you now can’t wait for 12 months from now June of 25 if we’re in the if if if we’re in the Eastern Conference Finals or if we’re in the finals I’m G have to hear oh please tell me if I’m wrong I have to hear great hire by Alman absolutely Banger job from the GM if we’re if we’re if if it doesn’t go very well I’m gonna hear well Dan Gilbert stepped in and made this hiring decision you know you can’t blame Alman they didn’t let him do his job so I’m already preparing for that 12 months down the road but I think we had a lot of good interesting points here does anyone have anything else before we sign off no I’m looking for a free agency you know we’ll see what the Cavaliers do I’m ma now I’m not all that interested in the draft I’m just not I know there’s other people that are interested and my buddy texted me today saying I think there is some sleepers there’s always sleepers I get it but I we don’t have time to develop any more young players I I I I see people saying like like I think Mac might even mentioned it Max said something along lines like what’s more important to like develop or or a guy with like that’s ready to go or a guy that has more potential I can’t remember exactly the thing was but my point is It’s gotta if you’re gonna draft a guy in the NBA he’s got to be ready to play basketball like we we I I just can’t this point at this point in our timeline yeah yeah like and listen if at the end of the day if they draft a team need fine that’s good we need a lanky Wing we need a backup big so if you get any of those two fine go for them and then it the talks will get real interesting we got the free agency could stand Pat shouldn’t but they could we’ll see there’s still a lot of dominoes need to fall I don’t think the Cavaliers are anywhere near done with what’s going on this offseason I think a lot is going to happen we’re going to see a different Cavs team next year and I would like to believe it’s gonna be for the better yeah a lot of early reports that uh no major shakeups around the way besides the head coach obviously but I guess we’ll see uh talk is talk Justin yeah no I like Logan was alluding to a lot of domino that are going to fall obviously your draft comes up first on Wednesday I’m a little bit interested like I think there’s a couple there’s like two names for me that I would get excited for if we drafted them after that it’s kind of like all right like Logan said if you’re drafting a need great um but other than that like I don’t think you’re G to get a guy that unless you are drafting from a position of need is going to crank the lineup um it beat interesting like I’ve seen a couple of guards names that I would understand getting them if you let a Isa auro walk in free agency or B you trade a Caris LeVert and you know open that position of need backup but other than that you know like I said Isaac with his uh free agency we’ll see how that goes and again just kind of being locked into uh mle kind of player for free agency so we’ll see though Donovan big extension incoming a guy like aoro I mean that could be Atkinson’s new Ronde Hollis Jefferson not that okoro wasn’t as Qui as Ronda I honestly Ronde wasn’t a bad basketball player I just think he really excelled that one season I I think Atkinson needs to instill toughness in a lot of these guys go after rebounds crash the boards get your five to six rebounds Justin hampers on all the time believe us like’s totally right we need guys High pace high energy high volume of shots I think we’re going to get that from Atkinson I think a lot of guys who are still finding their way or still have one or two things holding them back from being a regular like consistent presence on the court I think Atkinson has the ability to get that we hear all about his development apparently developing young talent I can’t wait for him to turn Dean wade into the next show Harris that’ be so prob proba that’ be so killer I mean shoot if he could uh if he can increase Mo’s three-point percentage by five or seven percent I mean you know then we probably increase by five to seven wins Jeffrey oh absolutely I think that changes the you know the complexion of the roster but that’s the Cavs encapsulated crew offseason mode lots to come Donovan extension
