The Sacramento Kings ALMOST Landed Alex Caruso | Locked On Kings

on the eve of the NBA draft we learned two very important pieces of information number one the Sacramento Kings were this close to trading for Alex Caruso number two dearon Fox will not sign a contract extension this season but that’s no reason to panic plus I’ll share my final thoughts going into the draft it’s all right here for you on locked on Kings you are locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of lock on [Applause] Kings hello and welcome into lockon Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all offseason long today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more the playoffs have winded down and the sports have stopped sporting the way that we want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everybody every day all summer long visit f.com Lockton to get started my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for abc1 news now the main two things that we’re going to discuss from today’s podcast come from a recent article or report from the athletic written by Sam amch and Anthony slay are kind of a a co-op article and Co-op report that they put together talking about a number of things but a pretty hyperfocus on the Sacramento Kings heading into draft night so we’re going to break down both of these two I think in kind of the order of significance or the order uh of importance and I’ve seen a lot of reaction to this over the last 24 hours or so online as this article came out some Kings fans um frustrated or or disappointed by the Kings missing out on Alex Caruso we’ll get into that here in just a second some Kings fans worried or or bothered by the news that dearon fox uh will not sign a contract extension it’s completely normal completely understandable and I’ll break it all down why and then with the NBA draft coming tomorrow of course I I’ll I’ll I’ll share my final thoughts on if the kings make a selection who I would be okay or would like them to select and I’ll also talk about a trade that I managed to put together in our locked on NBA Mock Draft so big jam-packed episode want to get your thoughts want to get your opinions on everything that we talk about so feel free to reach out at any time you can hit me up on Twitter at Matt George sack you can email me Matt George Sports at gmail.com and of course leave your thoughts in the YouTube comment section down below if you’re watching on YouTube the Kings this close to Landing Alex Caruso the Kings offered the 13th pick for Caruso to the Chicago Bulls it was highly under consideration and the Bulls eventually chose to go with the Oklahoma City offer of Josh giddy instead it’s frustrating right because Alex Caruso would have been so unbelievably perfect for the Kings exactly what they’re looking for granted maybe exactly is not fair but very high very close to what they’re looking for because Caruso is more of a guard and less of a forward or like a Wing forward and the Kings need more depth in the range of like 68 69 610 but he is a defensive guard that could have come in guarded positions one through three On Any Given night and kind of bolstered the defensive uh depth that you have with uh Keon Ellis and Davon Mitchell but here’s the thing and dearen fox too although the point of these players is trying to take a lot of the defensive responsibility off of fox here’s the thing though like Alex Caruso would have been the best version of Keon Ellis or daveon Mitchell immediately for the Kings that’s what you would have added for the 13th pick if you were able to pull this tradeoff so the my frustration does not come with anything other than wow it was possible to get him he was right there and that would have been ideal for the Kings it would have been ideal for Mike Brown if you could have turned the 13th pick into that I would have called that a tremendous success home run of a move by Monty McNair that being said I understand why Chicago took the Josh giddy deal over 13 I saw some Kings fans and some NBA fans period going are the are the are the Bulls stupid why would they take giddy instead of the 13th overall pick it’s because giddy is likely better than anything they’re going to get at 13 in this draft not for sure 100% I know Josh giddy had some clear offc court issues that he dealt with with we don’t need to get into that right and that he does not get a pass for that he does not get an excuse for that but as a basketball player and I’m not saying that you can just ignore issues that somebody has if you if you don’t know what’s going on or what went on um just just go and look it up right you can’t just focus on the basketball player and ignore the the offc court stuff I understand but if we’re talking from a pure basketball standpoint Josh giddy is a a solid player he’s a solid player now he was a weakness for the Oklahoma City Thunder they didn’t have many he was probably their biggest one so it makes sense that the Thunder would look to upgrade him Alex Caruso is an upgrade in some ways and a downgrade in others he’s definitely an upgrade on the defensive end he’s definitely upgrade with a a player who who knows how to win a veteran presence right he’s going to help the Oklahoma City Thunder tremendously they still are going to need a point guard which is the role that Josh giddy played in OKC I know Shay gilis Alexander can take the ball up and maybe take some of that responsibility but I know he’s more of a scoring to than he is like a facilitating floor General one so the the Thunder have things to figure out in that sense but Josh giddy gives the Chicago Bulls a solid young player on a rookie scale contract meaning he’s going to have have or or they’re going to have his restricted rights going into free agency at the end of his contract which I think is in like two years or something like that maybe it’s a year I honestly you know what let’s look it up which is always good to do uh while you’re recording a podcast but let’s look up Josh giddy’s uh contract here so we have a better idea of of what they’re looking at Josh giddy he is in the last year of his um of his contract it’s a club option a team option which the team will exercise for $8.3 million so at the end of this season the Bulls will have to pay Josh giddy that being said Josh giddy is on a rookie scale contract they have his restricted rights the Bulls would have had to pay Alex kuso who will be a free agent at the end of this season I have no idea if Alex kuso is GNA be more or less expensive than Josh giddy I have a feeling he’ll probably be a little bit less given the circum ances of the bulls will have the cap space and the the need to retain Giddy and if if Caruso returns to the Oklahoma City Thunder I don’t think they’re going to be able to pay him a massive amount of money with the other players on that roster either way having a player on a rookie stale contract a good young player with upside like Josh giddy it’s an understandable pick or understandable selection over the 13th pick for Chicago if I’m being honest with you though I wouldn’t have accepted either deal if I’m the Bulls that’s how highly I I value Alex Caruso now I know the Bulls turned down reportedly multiple first round picks for Alex Caruso last season which is absurd considering what they ended up trading him for I know the Bulls are kind of forced into picking a direction right now I would have run the risk of just losing Caruso in free agency and not taking either of those deals but ultimately they sent him West and they kind of wiped their hands of him right it’s like at least he’s not in the Eastern Conference so congratulations to the Oklahoma City Thunder that that now this kind of transitions into from the king’s perspective one could you have sweetened the deal a little bit more if you knew that 13 was going up against Josh giddy could you have added a young player to that deal to get the Bulls to say yes my thought immediately is Davon Mitchell we have no idea if the Kings did this but could the Kings have added Davon Mitchell and thir or or to the 13 package to say hey Davon Mitchell not as good of a not as high of an upside player as Josh giddy but it’s another young player final year of his deal rookie scale contract you have his his restricted rights and you get the 13th pick on top of that for Alex cruo I would have a 100 per made that move if I’m the Kings not that I hate Davon Mitchell or anything and I’ve seen you in the comment section Matt’s just trying to trade Davon Mitchell he’s always trying to trade Davon Mitchell yeah I’m trying to get this team better I’m trying to make this team better Avon Mitchell surprised me and impressed me with how he ended last season but for the majority of Davon Mitchell’s time here in Sacramento he has not fit well Alex kuso I think would have been a perfect fit I’m not mad that Davon Mitchell was still on this roster in the slightest I’m not but if you were to tell me Matt you had the opportunity to trade Davon Mitchell and the 13th pick and get Alex freak and Caruso I’m driving to the airport to pick Caruso up that’s how into that deal I am maybe the Kings offered that maybe they I if if they were hesitant to do that and that ultimately lost them out on the deal I would be critical of that and I’m going to continue to be a little bit critical of of Monty McNair here and you know how big of of a supporter and believer I am in McNair he’s done the best job of any general manager since Jeff Peter he’s been the only General Manager to get this team back to the playoffs he made the absolute right higher in Mike Brown and and he’s more often than not he’s been correct he made the big swing move with uh with damont sabonis trading Tyrese halberton I think think that was the right move correct move to make I support Monty McNair in a lot of the decisions that he’s made I know Monty McNair likes to go more of the patient route I understand that completely however via his own words at the end of last season during his end of season press conference the kings are in win now mode they need to win right now they’re built to win right now so you need to go out and add players that help you do that Alex cruso would have done that you no longer get a pass or get credit for an almost move I respect him shopping the pick like I think he’s supposed to do and he’ll continue to do I respect him making a competitive move for a clear upgrade player that would have not just fit what the Kings need would fit what Mike Brown his head coach is looking for I respect that absolutely and I understand that ultimately this is the Bulls decision right it takes two to 10 go in a deal you can’t just this is not NBA 2K with Force trades you can’t just force a team to accept what you have but this is a results League you’re judged based off of what you do not what you tried to do you don’t get points for trying for Alex Caruso anymore here is the harsh reality of the situation everybody Alex Caruso just went to a competitor in the west you’re not just trying to make the playoffs you’re trying to win a freaking Championship maybe not next season you don’t want to jump the gun the Kings aren’t putting themselves in Championship competitiveness for next season they’re going to want to they’re going to try to and they’re going to say they are come free uh from come media day at the beginning of the season that’s great if you’re not playing for a championship what are you playing for realistically we know the kings are not slotting themselves into Championship contention next season or at least we don’t think they are we don’t think they’re ready for that yet but Alex Caruso just joined another young team that surpassed you this year made a humongous jump to the top of the Western Conference I know there’s a question of whether they over achieved or not whether they’re going to come back down to earth this summer or next next season or not but they have they they’ found a way to improve without trading their Treasure Trove of first round picks that they still have so they’re they’re gonna continue to improve they went out and got a guy that you could desperately use and now you have to deal with him and go through him if you ultimately want to win in the Western Conference that’s the reality of the situation so you don’t get points for trying for Alex Caruso because ultimately you lost in getting him to the Oklahoma City Thunder I’m I’m not trying to be harsh and I’m not trying to be a hater on Monty mcir at all that’s just the reality of the situation to me so is it the end of the world the Kings didn’t get Alex cruso absolutely not Monty still has every possibility to have a home run of a draft tomorrow night to have a home run of an offseason he’s already off to a damn good start getting Mike Brown and uh Malik monk uh resigned right right Mike Brown was a contract extension but getting Malik mon re signed like he’s off to a damn good start he’s having a good offseason so far there’s really not anything for me to be upset or disappointed in Monty McNair for I’m just saying I’m not giving him points for missing on Alex kuso at this point in time the other aspect to this report has to do with dear and fox refusing to sign an extension or or not unwillingness to sign an extension next season I’ll break it all down why it makes complete sense and there’s no reason to panic in just a second like I said at the top of the show today’s episode of the locked on Kings podcast is brought to you by FanDuel I love sports if you couldn’t tell I love them so much I never want them to stop but the playoffs are over we get fewer games and the sports aren’t Sports in the way that we want them to right now but FanDuel lets me keep my sports fixed going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I’m in the mood of course this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers every single one with a boost or bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long whether you’re betting on MLB action to get you through into the fall uh whether football season comes around and you want to have fun with some like future bets who’s going to win the championship who’s going to be the MVP uh you want to get in early on NBA championship bets for next season whatever you want to do FanDuel has it for you so head over to fanduel.com locked on and start making the most out of your summer fandal is official sports betting partner of the MLB in addition to the news about Alex Caruso the athletic reported that dearen fox will not uh sign an extension a contract extension this year again like I’ve laid out already plenty of times here in the podcast this is not a reason to panic whatsoever now I’m not just saying that to get you to drink the purple Kool-Aid and get you to to chill out and get you to brush the concern under the rug and ignore what’s going on I’m genuinely 100% serious that this is not any reason to Panic or be concerned ideally would we like to have dear and fox sign an extension be under contract and remove all semblance of Doubt absolutely but you need to understand how much money Dearing would be leaving off the table or on the table or would not be getting by signing an extension right now that is what this has to do with pretty much completely and when you understand the options that dearn has and the reasons for why financially he would want to wait I think it’s going to remove all concern that you have of him leaving yes there is a Poss he’s got two years left on his contract there is a possibility after those two years that he leaves as an unrestricted free agent and goes wherever the hell he wants and I think if if we’re getting to that realm of possibility we’re talking about this version of the king’s experiment failing we’re talking about this core as we know it did not work and the Kings need to likely move on and de’arra maybe says you know what I’ve spent my entire career here in Sacramento it’s not working out I’m gonna go elsewhere and try and win a title maybe those are his motivations as of right now there’s literally zero reason to believe that he’s unhappy with where he’s at unhappy with the Sacramento Kings but check this out this is what the these this is the reason these are the incentives for de’arra not signing an extension right now he’s eligible for a super max contract by making an all NBA team or winning defensive player of the year or MVP next season last season La yeah last offseason he or last season sorry he turned down a two-year $105 million contract extension had he made all NBA last season the season that just wrapped up he would have been eligible for a three-year 100 67 million extension so right there you’re talking about a $62 million difference between what he was eligible for and what he could have gotten just by making all NBA last year if he makes all and uh excuse me I’m sorry I got a little messed up let me backtrack here let me let me do this again because I got the figures wrong I want to make sure I get this right this off season dearon was eligible to sign a three-year $167 million contract extension so last season he was eligible for a two-year $15 million extension this year right now he’s eligible for a three-year $160 million extension if he had made all NBA last season that contract would have gone up to a 4-year $269 million extension so him making all NBA would have been the difference of $100 million that he could sign for the extension now going forward if he makes all NBA MVP or defensive player of the year he would be eligible for What’s called the designated veteran extension 5 years 349 million dollar which would be the biggest contract in NBA history so if he signs an extension right now coming off of a season where he’s hasn’t won all NBA he’s walking away from literally hundreds of millions of dollars that he’s eligible for why in the hell would he do that even if he’s very happy in Sacramento and I know for a fact he’s very happy in Sacramento why in the world would you walk away from the possibility of hundreds of millions of dollars by doing something that you’ve already done dear’s already made all NBA he can do it again and then there’s a there next summer or next with his upcoming extension there’s a 5year $349 million deal potentially on the table that’s it makes perfect sense I know I jumbled the numbers there I’m sorry if you need to go back and listen to that to to break it down or understand it um I had it all messed up in my notes but just gives you an idea ultimately of how much money is there for dearn still to make with the results over the next couple of Seasons that he has remaining on his deal currently that’s that’s a massive massive amount of money that again he’d be absurd to to walk away from or not even put them himself in eligibility for now I will say this this is a conversation for another day let’s say dear makes all NBA and is eligible for that five years $349 million massive historic NBA contract that puts the kings in a really really tough spot because in some ways like you gotta give it to him right he’s your star but where are you at and where is dearon at because we know he’s capable of winning all NBA but he won all NBA last season on a team that was a firstr playoff exit granted he and sabonis deserve to be all NBA and I think part of the Kings turnaround after years of crap nearly two decades of crap influen them making all NBA so they’re not gonna have that influence before dearon making all NBA any of the teams is very possible and I did a podcast earlier in the offseason talking about how confident I am and the big jump that he is gonna make so this is just another reason to be excited about the idea of what dearon fox can be with him knowing how much money is out there for him if he plays well if he plays up to the level that we know he’s capable of playing but if he were to be eligible for that that puts the kings in a real I mean giving dearen and it’s he’s not gonna have the biggest contract in NBA history for long right it’s only gonna be a for short period of time until somebody else signs something bigger because it’s it’s gonna happen that way so it’s not like that’s gonna make it’s not GNA be absurd the idea of making dear and fox the highest paid player in the NBA because it’s naturally gonna happen it’s only gonna last for a short period but that is the humongous Financial commitment the Sacramento Kings better be pretty sure if they’re going to give him that that he is their dude he is the Superstar that they can win a championship with I think he can be again I think if we get to that point the Kings will be in a really really good spot and he’ll be deserving of that money and Sacramento will almost have to give it to him but if I were to tell you right now with who dearen is as a player and where the kings are at like hey Fork out $349 million to keep Fox yeah I’d be a little concerned or hesitant if I were the Sacramento Kings but I hope we’re in that position that the Kings can offer that and dear deserves that because that means the kings are probably in a really really really really really good spot also it’s completely natural there was part of the report too it’s completely natural for dear to also want to see where the roster and where the organization is at by the time he can sign these extensions too and give it a little more time because if this team is not closer to a championship he might go all right like you you you’ve tried you failed nothing going right here I’m I’m going to go elsewhere I hope he doesn’t do that I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that but it’s natural to want to keep that option open and I will say this the Kings extending Mike Brown resigning Malik monk those are huge steps forward towards convincing dearon Fox to stay here in Sacramento all right final thoughts before tomorrow’s NBA draft I will be inside the Kings practice facility which is attached to the golden one Center the Kings have all their front offices up top and we sit in the practice facility floors down below where the Kings have all their practices at we’ll watch the draft from there uh and we will hear from Monty McNair at a press conference at the end of the night I’ll be covering all of it for abc1 the draft is on abc10 here in Sacramento so please support us and support that broadcast if you can and then of course I will be doing a podcast from the king’s practice facility after the night is done and we know what the kings are doing with the 13th pick so expect full and uh exciting draft coverage in depth from Lockdown Kings tomorrow and I hope you will uh tune in I hope you will join me but ultimately look here here’s what I want from draft Knight here’s what the Kings need from draft Knight the Kings need to use this Knight to get better they can do that by taking a rookie for sure the only way they make significant Improvement in my opinion is is with the trade right and I’ve been consistent all offseason long trade the pick find a way to turn the pick into an upgrade they tried with Alex Caruso I love the effort there find a way to make that work with another upgrade or use the pick to move back in the draft if it gets you some sort of asset or something right find a way to use the pick to bring in an established NBA caliber upgrade that is my first goal first request first and foremost but like we see with the Alex cuso deal there’s no guarantee of that happening there’s no guarantee of a team saying yes so you have to have of course a backup plan I’ll get into in just a second the players that I like or would be okay or or if I were making the selection these would be the guys like in that range that I would like want the Kings to go out and get first off we did our we we do our lock on NBA Mock Draft every single year where every host makes a selection for their respective team and I’ve been preaching so much about trading the pick there’s no way in hell couldn’t find a trade that makes sense so I went to my guys at the lockon Wizards podcast I got a deal done I traded number 13 and Sasha venkov who’s an expiring contract essentially to Washington for number 13 if I have no idea no idea if Washington would make this move maybe it would take Harrison Barnes or um Kevin herder being added to the deal or more expiring contracts or whatever the case may be I don’t know but if the Kings could find a way to turn 13 into Kyle kozma on draft night I know K there are concerns about kozma for sure he’s not the perfect player by any means I’m beyond happy with that and I hope the Kings have a chance to potentially do that on draft night so that’s what I did in our our mock draft but if the Kings end up making a selection drafting a rookie here here are three names in order that I would like the Kings to go out and get number one is Tristan D Silva 23y old power forward out of out of uh I shouldn’t say power forward he’s small forward power forward he’s a he’s a forward out of uh Colorado he’s old ER which Monty McNair has loved to go the older route with his prospects in the draft meaning he’s more plug andplay ready I think to be a part of the king’s rotation has good defense uh good versatile switchability defensive upside on the perimeter he’s a smart player and he spaces the floor and he knock down knocks down threes at a respectable clip right he is a three and D wi forward that this Kings team needs does that mean day one he’s going to be a part of the Kings rotation he’s going to be an impactful player I don’t know but I’m looking at who I believe is one of the most likely candidates to come in and right away make an impact on winning for Sacramento at a position of need and I think he will be there at 13 the other two first Ron Holland 18-year-old forward from the g-league ignite he is a lot more of a raw Prospect significantly younger five years younger than Tristan D Silva he’ll be 19 at the start of the season but still he has a tremendous amount of upside there were times people were talking about him as a potentially number one overall pick before he struggled with the g-league ignite who were terrible last season he’s athletic he attacks uh the basket as a wing High defensive potential with his body and his size the thing is though he’s I would say highly likely to fall to 13 I don’t think he’s going to be there at 13 if he falls it’ll be pretty significant I think the the lowest he’ll probably go is like 10 or 11 so I don’t expect him to be there but if he’s there the king should strongly consider taking him finally Cody Williams 19-year-old Wing out of Colorado the brother of Jaylen Williams in um in OKC another three and D Wing has a SL slashing skill set so someone who’s athletic who can attack the basket can potentially finish around the rim Think Like A Jaden McDaniels comparison right Jaden Daniels with the Minnesota Timberwolves the Kings would love have a guy like that really solid defensive ability has the measurements has the versatility on the defensive end uh and has good spot up shooting potential as well he’s maybe not like a knockout lights out three-point shooter but give him catch and shoot threes in the offense spacing the floor kickouts from Fox or from sabonis or whatever it may be he has that potential and he’s also unfortunately probably not going to be there at 13 he’s a little more likely to be there at 13 I think that Ron Holland but these are two guys that I would expect to go in like the 8 to 12 range but this draft who the hell knows that’s why I have Tristan Silva number one well two reasons I have Tristan D Silva number one out of the three one I expect him to be there and two because he’s older and more plug andplay than both of those other guys are but any of the the Kings Walk Away with any of these three names on draft night I’m disappointed they didn’t trade the pick but it’s a good consolation prize and that sounds so harsh mean to say about players who just had their dreams of making the NBA realized like and these all three of these guys could be better than anything the Kings could trade or or could get in a trade at 13 I have no idea we don’t know how it’s going to play out but based off of what I think the Kings need and where the kings are at I would love to see the Kings try and trade this pick if they end up with any of those three for the most part I’d be pretty happy but I have no idea what the kings are going to do on draft night not a clue and that’s a good thing none of us should know what the kings are going to do I think the k are going to be working the phones they’re going to be shopping that pick all the way up until the buzzer we’ll see if they find a deal or not they also shouldn’t just make a deal for the sake of making a deal but that’s never been Monty McNair’s style so I’m not really too concerned about that want to hear your thoughts on the Caruso near uh trade I want to hear your thoughts on Fox’s contract extension would love to hear your thoughts on who you want the Kings to go out and draft tomorrow your final thoughts heading into the draft hit me up with all of them lay them all out there let’s get them out there you’re watching on YouTube put them in the comment section down below hit me up on Twitter atmad George sack email me Mt Georg Sports gmail.com I will see you from the Kings practice facility tomorrow 1. Bottom line deal didn't get done & to think all they got was josh giddey who is good but he's no star kings couldn't top that offer i wonder i hope monte really gets something done starting draft night no more well we tried smh

  2. Just draft Edey and stop with these dumb trades for old washed up 30 something year old players.

  3. @mattgeorgesac: In the past, Monte has kept everything very close to his vest, and rarely did any reports like this get out. Do you think, lately? Since we're hearing so much more, these leaks /reports, are so everyone ( media,NBA GMs, fans) can sort of learn a little more of how monte's being shut down?
