Do The Pistons Need To Take A Big Swing In The NBA Draft? | The Valenti Show with Rico

all right 3 o’clock good to have you with us uh we did open with a little tiger talk two ways a Scott Harris MLB Network or talking with the play-by-play guys how about talking with the beat writers how about going on with our morning show how about answering a few questions now I’ve got some audio from this sit down he did that’s rather upsetting to me but I’m saving it cuz I’m I don’t want to be angry especially about a team that you’re not watching but please listen it’s free so re I have Rico and I on this particular issue see the world completely differently which is fine because this is to me not something about right and wrong it’s not I think it’s a waste of time if Rico and I argue about this this is about you guys and it’s about two human beings who couldn’t be further apart on the Pistons draft tomorrow night so we’re calling it a draft decree Rico’s even dressed up in a house of the Dragons reset and he’s going to the Town Square to send a raven here’s what I think the Pistons must do in this draft must I think they have to swing out of their shoes I think you have to take the biggest wildest swing you can on projection and the player you draft is either work bin next to Kenny in three years or he’s an all NBA player I don’t care how Langdon is doing it Lord knows we don’t have a coach I couldn’t ask him what he would like you have to draft a player whose physical tools are so immense that if it works it’s Giannis if it works it’s Pascal cakam I’m just highlighting two players that were absolute projects right I am I want to take an 18 or 19y old player and I’m not going to play him this year I’ll probably barely play him in year two and I’ve got to nurture them along to where they can become this explosive weapon or they end up playing lawn darts in their backyard cuz they suck at actual basketball or Rico is at the other end of the of this because at that thing Mike when you keep just drafting players who are 18 and 19y olds with high potential and you hope that things happen you end up winning 14 games in the season oh that was the Pistons last year because they took hey we’re going to take you know amen I mean assur Thompson and we’re going to take D Duren and we’re going to take all these different people and hopefully they pan out my thing is this if you’re going to keep Kade and I think you’re going to keep Kade you’re going to resign him you have to put pieces around him that can help him win now cuz if not he’s just going to say I don’t want to be here for a rebuild with a bunch of young guys so yeah I’m more so I like players who could just score baskets right now that you could take them straight from New York from the draft plop them right on the team and let’s go you’re in the starting lineup you’re going to help Kate Cunningham you’re going to try to win some games is we’ve said this is a weak draft so there may not be a superstar so I’m going to go with a sure thing over a project because 3 years from now you can be hitting the reset button already but if you’re keeping Cade you have to start surrounding Cade by competent people who can score the ball so yeah that’s why I want a guy like a Dalton connect I don’t care about his age I just know that the man can score he’s going to help out Cade and now we Infuse this offense we got a ton of defensive players but defense doesn’t get you baskets you got to be able to score people do you want High floor or high seal that’s really what it comes down to like that that look I I don’t and I don’t really want to get into a cade Cunningham conversation nor do I want to argue with the man to my left I don’t know that either of us is wrong but for me the whole idea of you guys have a reality check coming if you think this summer is going to be about putting players around Cade no you’re going to be a pop bottle machine you know when you go to the grocery store and you return your pop bottles and you put them in the gigantosaurus machine and they hand you pennies on the dollar that’s you that’s Pistons you’re the League’s pop bottle machine and you’re going to take on dead bodies with first round picks attached to that’s not going to help Kade and with all due respect to Dalton connect at age 23 and a half Grady comes in fine what win three more games five more what’s the upside I have a diff do you and I differ I don’t believe in development after age 23 I think you kind of are what you are no but I mean look there’s examples of both Mike where you get some guy who comes in at 23 and he caps out you also get guys who come in and okay he was 22 but you look at it like a jayen Bronson and now look at him what does the aggregate say though that’s my point don’t do what Scott Harris did which is hey here’s our three best offensive games weren’t they fun what did I just say not you I’m saying people need to use the aggregate that generally speaking not exclusively the bust rate is going to be immense in the NBA draft regardless right I want a guy who the best might Yet to Come versus old balls college guy just don’t want it I would take a guy who can give me some points right now and if the worst case scenario is he ends up moving to seventh or eighth on my bench but he’s still playing great rather than guy with high potential and in the end he’s killing in Hay so people what do you want look and this is the key I’m not asking you what player cuz you don’t know any of these players and you’re not wrong you have lives we don’t know all these players you think I’ve sat down and I could give you this dissertation on Ron Holland Oh I thought he was the guy who played spiderman 18 I don’t care they might be the same person 18 years old played in the G League no idea none and allegedly reading he’s Kade Cunningham he had no help around him 35% usage rate what for an 18-year-old playing against grown men so here’s my thing you either want it’s it’s all about the ideology of it Rico wants a ready-made product who can play basketball give you 20 minutes a night this year and help this team it’s not anything to laugh at I think the only way to get out of this which is being in the Perma bowl of the NBA where the toilet is Flushing and you’re just continually circling you need Stars the only way to find him you got to find a unicorn you got to find a guy that right now looks like like hot trash and because of the staff you bring in which Rico you’ll win this argument I don’t know who the coach is yeah I don’t know who they’re bringing in I don’t know if we’re going to begin teaching basketball but that’s the swing I have to take because realistically I’m not making my way out of this with just nice players right Cade needs a running mate a star because I would say this you know you’re saying well you know if you take a guy like a Dalton connect and you win five more games okay you take a project he’s not going to be here then I dra Cooper flag you don’t win any more games you you’re sitting at 14 well part of it is and I okay don’t David he’s boxing me in to talk about something I don’t want to talk about but I’ll do it I’m a man of the I’m a man of the people which is happened here I’m going to tell you what’s happened a lot of this centers around Cade and the belief structure see I don’t believe there is a way to get good quick I don’t believe there’s a way to give Cade what he deserves which is good players around them this Summer they’ll have 70 million in cap space mhm what do you think you’re doing trading for Paul George it’s not happening you are going to be the recycling center you are a garbage receptacle that’s the Pistons the league is taking their trash bag with Ben Simmons body in it or Andrew wiggin’s body in it and they’re going oh hello Tom gors you have room in your trash can enjoy and here’s two dinner certificates and a crumble cookie like that that’s what you are so this whole fantasy of we’re going to get great players we’re going to put them around Cade we’re going to draft somebody at five and he’s going to not play this year I just don’t see it yeah but then it forces me to be at war with the listeners and I don’t want to do that that’s what you’re mean I’m not mean mik it’s no it’s it’s not no it’s not because I’d rather have somebody that I can see go out there and actually contribute to this team because you have a team full of potential and it’s not do you agree with me that Dalton connect that is best will be a rotational player in this league no I don’t I think that well we don’t see it the same way by rotational you mean what list is rotational guy who’s the seventh man Off the Bench of a good team I think that do connect could end up being could be a starter now is he going to be your main guy no but I think that he could be a third or fourth scorer onam if connect isn’t there I want to test your theory if he’s not there who are you taking cuz you want to ready made player who are you taking Reed sheeper because you need somebody who can hit threes Mike okay this team can’t okay I know he’s tiny I get it I it doesn’t mean he’s bad but at least he’s 19 at least I have four more years to develop him right and hope to God he grows and has some kind of growth spurt but yes Benjamin Button he won’t be around but yeah in a second round pick or if you happen to trade down and get some later picks I would say I’d take Terence Shannon people anybody around anybody and it’s just simple I have tried to simplify talking about this draft to the best of my abilities you got team Rico you want the readymade guy High floor unlikely to be utterly atrocious at basketball but unlikely to ever be a star or my way desperation mode you trust Tran Langdon and he looks at one of these freakazoids at 610 205 and goes this this this and this and then next thing you know beep up Bo up beep he’s Pascal SE yakum or he works at a paint store I’m willing to swing for defenses because this team’s destitute it’s not right and wrong it’s preference yeah it’s chocolate and vanilla ice cream they’re both fine enough

Valenti believes the Detroit Pistons need to take a huge swing in the NBA Draft. Rico, not so much. #pistons #nba #basketball

  1. If this weren’t a generationally bad draft, I would agree with Mike. Nobody in this draft is worth a swing. Take a safe pick, like a Jaime Jaquez. Swing in the next draft.

  2. I would prefer to do what Mike wants but that would require trading Cade. Which I’m fine with but I know they’re not doing that. So I gotta go team Rico.
