Is JJ Redick under IMMENSE pressure with the Lakers?! Brian Windhorst responds 🍿 | Get Up

Lakers will introduced JJ reick as their new head coach today and for him this is a great 40th birthday present now the former analyst signed a 4-year contract with Los Angeles last week and despite reic entering an organization with championship expectations UD D said last week here on get up that the Lakers aren’t a true title Contender you got your coach but what about the roster I mean I don’t think the Lakers have a championship roster I mean JJ could drw the annexation of Puerto Rico doesn’t matter what he put out there they do not have a championship roster I think he’s going to do a hell of a job but it’s going to take time to build that trust and build that Brotherhood in that locker room first off UD he G to stop disrespecting Rick Moranis and ice box right the annexation of Puerto Rico is how we won the whole dang thing so we going to respect what they were able to do but legs what’s going to be JJ reck’s biggest challenge with the Lakers well look aside from the obvious which is a young firsttime head coach being able to you know walk that line between having command but also understanding the the difference that you have to have at coaching at the NBA level so that that’s just something he’s going to have to learn over time but for me it’s meeting unrealistic expectations if you’re in La unfortunately for JJ and you got LeBron on your roster people think that means you’re in Championship Contender mode that you’re on that level and the truth is this team is just not good enough and and particularly they’re not built for the regular season which means in the Western Conference you’re climbing a lot of rungs in that ladder when you get to the playoffs going on the road repeatedly series after Series against teams with younger star players with deeper Talent pools so the expectations are going to be there but it doesn’t match up with what this team looks like and the lack of flexibility that they really have on their roster to improve to a certain degree so that’s going to be the toughest thing for JJ and particularly for a guy that’s doing this for the first time I I completely agree legs I think last night I use the word Vision the vision going forward what does this organization want what do they expect and how are they going to support because we’ve talked a lot about ad being the centerpiece moving forward okay but to your point LeBron is on the roster which means anybody that has LeBron on their team thinks they’re contending so to me it is roster construction is in there right in terms of the available pieces to achieve whatever the goal is going to be but ultimately everybody has to get on the same page not just in the locker room but up in the front office as well well you’re talking about the same page when coaching and star player is not a podcast although we’ve seen JJ and LeBron work well there is this a good Dynamic for the Lakers between JJ and Brun yeah it’s a good Dynamic for day one but day one doesn’t Define the season it’ll be day 50 day 100 and I think JJ is truly excited about this job I think he’s truly excited about what he can do tactically to get more out of this team I think he saw ER areas where the Lakers could do different Maneuvers that could boost their efficiency and I think he’ll plan to do that but where I think the Lakers have a big Challenge and where JJ is really going to have to do his best work is on the defensive end of the floor that’s not where people focus but for the Lakers that’s exactly where their seasons have been defined two years ago when they made that run to the Conference Finals they had the number four defense after the All-Star break those trades that they made getting out of the Russell Westbrook situation really defined That season for them last year they really slumped defensively back to 17th it is not fun to talk about defensive rotations it is not fun to talk about needing perimeter defense in your or in your roster construction but if you’re really going to improve this team if you’re going to take them from Seventh Place to sixth or fourth you got to do that on the defensive end and that starts with JJ reck uh setting the tone at the start of the Season legs we saw in the finals with Luca defense isn’t easy how does JJ get this team to play play Championship level defense yeah look you know I’ve talked a lot of Hoops with JJ here over the last couple years since he’s been at ESPN and and this is the reason he’s getting this job is to tighten up those areas of the floor you’re not talking about Reinventing the wheel there’s only so many different things you can do defensively schematically but what you can do is pay more attention to the details that really matter that is where JJ excels and his communication skills and being able to make guys understand that in a way that they can implement it that’s what this is all about that’s why JJ reick is there I think this Dynamic of you know LeBron JJ are people going to wonder whose team it is you know with with JJ in the locker room and LeBron they did the podcast is there going to be enough respect there I look at J LeBron James career you wanted me to start listing all the guys that have been a head coach for LeBron James it was the same conversation with every single one of those coaches so this is nothing new this is not unique to JJ that he’s going to hear this sort of conversation like who’s really pulling the strings behind the scene that’s always going on with LeBron with the exception of one guy Eric spoler and even that started out 8- n with people wondering was this too big for Eric spoler even that situation there were some questions going in now fortunately he had Pat Riley there he had Dwayne Wade there to tell LeBron no no no this dude is the guy every other coach LeBron’s played for the same conversations have taken place and JJ’s going to have to deal with that as well I don’t think it’s a bad Dynamic that they’ve got a mutual respect and a relationship already going in I don’t see why that would be considered a bad thing with LeBron James why you look so puzzled two things I agree with legs and I personally I think the JJ podcast LeBron podcast is overblown right at least it’s on Front Street right we all know that if LeBron said the coach is gone so at least this relationship is on Front Street coming in so I agree with you in it being overblown but as you talk about the the details and the margins and the adjustments that need to be made defensively I’m struggling separating the face RC is because I’m struggling separating the Personnel from the ability to do that and so we’re going to go in the free agency here we’re going to go into this offseason and the Lakers are going to need to get it right and the players that they’re looking for to Wendy’s Point guys that can guard on the perimeter two-way type of guys the entire league is looking for and I just don’t know that the Lakers the glitter and the gold of the purple and gold is as bright as it once was in order to really set JJ up to be successful now if they say give us another season like ad just had let’s see ad continuing to grow as a Center Police let’s get Jared Vanderbilt healthy and let’s see Improvement in this defense and again the vision becomes realistic then cool if everybody agrees that a success Lakers improving this roster well big part what the Lakers will say is that they’re they had two players that basically missed almost all last season that are big parts of their core which would be Gabe Vincent the the guy that they signed from the Miami Heat last year and as Monica just mentioned Jared Vanderbilt who is definitely regarded as one of their best perimeter Defenders so having those guys back healthy boost the roster but one of the big questions they’ve got is what happens with D’Angelo Russell he has a option in his contract that he’s got to decide on by the end of this week it’s for about $18 million for next season if he Ops out of that contract the Lakers are going to have a very difficult time replacing him be would be under some significant pressure to resign him because he did average 18 points and shot 40% from three last year um if he opts into his contract it’s one of those things where is there some is there value there in trade could they maybe make a trade uh with some future draft picks including his contract that can upgrade their roster but as you guys have said finding two-way Wing players is a big Challenge and um you know there there is a there are some free agents that are out there that could help them but the Lakers are hamstrung in signing free agents unless it’s an A sign in trade so they’re going to have to probably improve around the margins I don’t see a significant trade coming down the pike with them they’ve also got to get LeBron James resigned if he opts out as expected later in this week and LeBron may want to see what those types of moves are before committing to a new deal [Music]

On Get Up, Brian Windhorst, Monica McNutt and Tim Legler join Ryan Clark to talk through the state of the Los Angeles Lakers.

  1. When you’ve just been hired as the coach and you already know that your star player is un-coachable and toxic? It could be a long four years if JJ can make it that long, and I think he’s a very bright guy who knows Ex’s & Oh’s good luck

  2. Expectations is at least a trip to the NBA Finals either this upcoming szn or next. Ham got them to the West Finals alrdy 👀

  3. Jesus loves you! God bless! Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Psalms 62 – Truly my soul finds rest in God; … my salvation comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; … He is my fortress, I will never be shaken. ✝🤍🙏💪

  4. The Lakers need to bring back D-Lo, Draft a point gaurd like Carter to play backup & sign a big like Valanciunas or Goga. Then package Gabe, JHS & 1 of Hayes or Wood along with a first & look for a good wing player. If we can stay healthy were a dangerous team with a few minor upgrades

  5. I think JJ will get more outta the players on the team than Coach Ham Pockets 🙄 dude never really coached the Lakers

  6. Leflop will simply blame JJ for the team sucking and demand Bronny starts lol. Total disgrace of a franchise. Leflop is a cancer that must be removed.

  7. I don't think players ar going to want to go there and play in that situation. I can imagine them. not trusting Lebron in the locker room to be themselves knowing he is buddies with the head coach like him and JJ are. This is not going to work.

  8. Player development, learning new ways to be your best at the level of the NBA is exciting. I'm looking forward to all of the lakers franchise to work together to motivate and create a sense of competitiveness, unique, to each and every game. Look at the best players and how they move and look at those who are driven to be the court in the starting line up. We need to keep our players healthy and our viewers excited to see what J.J. Redick has to offer. Congratulations J.J. and tell Bill Mcdonald I said hi, he use to say hi to me by folding his paper on live t.v. and tapping it on Mike Trudells right leg, great memories. I trust J.J. Will deliver as a coach that's why Lakers hired him because they needed a fresh new start, a young and well spoken coach. I know that Anthony Davis is going to be the star player and I hope they collaborate 50/50 to juice it their team. We need the goats to be smooth on the court but at the same time effortless, roster changes is a must. May the best team win, go lakers. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand." Isaiah 41:10. May you guide those young men who are doing all they can do to be drafted to the NBA, lakers franchise, to have the fairness they deserve. Sometimes one flaw untouched can't flourish without a great coach and a great team, overall, experience is key. Hope to hear new motivating music in the Lakers Arena in LA. Thanks Rob for giving J.J. an opportunity based on experience and work ethic. "I think in life, you just have to embrace things, if you have to talk about it, talk about it." -J.J. Redick. Enjoyment and embracing the process within the group is the absolute goal. Establishing process early on comes from a leaders mentality. Conflict resolution is essential to the energy we need to promote for the fans and collectively for the lakers franchise. I love the question on culture 🎉 and I'm so happy Rob backed J.J. up by saying he believes J.J. has the players back and is obsessed with detail. In return, It was so important he backed Rob up by emphasizing that he has visualization ad any other leader/coach would proudly agree. Rotation, game management, analytics and performance is math. His championship mentality in maximizing careers makes me feel pumped, I'm ready are you guys? Let's go!!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

  9. I agree with UD if rob dont don’t do his job JJ is great but even coach kerr can’t over come
