The latest rumblings surrounding the Bucks as we head into day 1 of the NBA Draft
coming up on today’s lock on bucks we get set for the NBA draft it is later tonight day one I should say of uh the NBA draft and some more Rumblings that we’re hearing about the Bucks and some other teams as it pertains to both players and draft picks we will get into that conversation coming up after the break here unlocked on bucks you are locked on bucks your daily Milwaukee Bucks podcast part everybody every day all summer long visit fanduel.com lockon to get started uh as you listen to this it’s Wednesday Camille so it is day one of the first ever two-day NBA draft I don’t know if we cleared this up either um and people were probably listening to previous shows when we both kind of threw out there man why is the draft so early on Thursday and I suppose it showed uh probably should have known that uh it’s because of the debate that is taking place that they put it so early on Thursday to avoid the presidential debate so I would assume next year you don’t have to deal with that and we’ll see two prime time days of the NBA draft but we’ve done all the Talking we’ve speculated who could the Bucks be looking at if you missed any of it we did three episodes looking at bigs guards and Wing players and players that we thought would be slotted somewhere around the bucks um we’ve also done a mock draft with all hosts of the locked on channels here you didn’t get we didn’t get the players we envisioned or the player we envisioned for the bucks is The Bigs there was a run of them early in the draft way earlier than I expected uh in our mock draft ultimate mock draft that does come out both me and Justin were interested in uh khil where as well as Don Holmes both of them were gone in the lottery uh of the mock draft so we were just kind of like dang okay how do we pivot from here but that’s the Vibes I’m getting from this draft which is why I’m so excited to see how it all unfolds which is this draft is really an eye of the beholder draft where there is no real consensus it’s about what teams how they feel about players who they think has the uh best development courses and just what they think fits with their team so it could be really chaotic you add that factor in with the whole idea of the fact that teams are now starting to really adjust to the second apron being a thing that’s been a lot of the conversation around the draft that I’ve been hearing which I was like this is so interesting shout out to Van for coming on uh and breaking down the buck situation when it comes to the first and second apron because we even heard it during JJ reck’s introductory press conference with the Lakers with Rob palinka speaking and saying like listen this new CBA is making things hard it’s harder to for us to find the right trades at this moment when you’re a first or second apron team and he mentioned fact that he thinks it’s going to be more emphasis on Player Development going forward just because of the constrictions that you have of being a first or second a team so it made me start thinking about the Bucs and like hey is this part of why we’ve been seeing the Bucks get such an experienced bench where it’s like we do want to make sure that we also have some time to work with the younger guys on the bench but Al makes me wonder for the draft like do the Bucs keep both picks or are they looking to trade back is it one of those things where you’re looking to get more second round picks at this because the the the cost that comes with this as well as being able to add on more years to it like my mind is going in so many different directions with this draft based on a lot of the noise that we’ve been hearing around it I uh I assume we’re gonna learn about JJ reic staff in the next couple of days here I still think Sam Cassell is GNA be the lead assistant in Los Angeles under JJ reick you mentioned his his press conference I don’t want to get too much into it uh because we got a lot to tackle with the draft there’s a lot of very humorous takeaways from the JJ reic presser um you mentioned the analytics and touting I’m gonna use math but no real in-depth conversation as to what parts of the math he was going to use I especially loved somebody asking him um basically the gist of it being you know your experience and and coming into this what are you gonna lean on and JJ reic saying uh I’ve never done this before so I don’t know what my weaknesses are yet that’s something I’m going to kind of learn along the way I know what my strengths are so apparently the experience lack of it it still gives you what your strengths are but not your weaknesses um it’s going to be interesting the next couple of days and weeks in Los Angeles and I suppose that’s a launching point so a couple of areas that we wanted to tackle here as we get set for the draft players that I mentioned and some of the latest Rumblings that we’ve heard and then what you touched on too what teams are going to do with their picks uh Bobby Marx talked about this at length the other day on Zack CL podcast I want to get to some of his comments but we’ll start with the players uh sticking in Los Angeles so we talked about this with Van we talked about this throughout the the start of the offseason here and that is what are the Bucks gonna do in terms of Trades and if they do move a player it seems like it’s very likely to be one of those three names that we’ve circled back to Bobby Portis Pat conon and Brook Lopez I I think for a Maran boow champ in there as well but those three primarily we saw a report earlier today um Tuesday that there are a handful of teams that are reportedly interested in Brook Lopez now take this with a grain of salt and the report is out there um from Gary Wolff everybody’s uh favorite reporter here in Milwaukee but the teams that were listed in his report to be showing interest in Brook Lopez the Memphis Grizzlies I think we we talked about that makes sense um the Oklahoma City Thunder also makes a little bit of sense when you think about that’s a team that’s ready to win now and they certainly could use some help at it size and especially with Brooke you’re bringing them in theoretically as like the final piece and that would be the perfect fit with Oklahoma City the New Orleans Pelicans another team that we had talked about before and potentially showing an interest in him the Houston Rockets who had a very strong interest in Brook Lopez last summer and apparently even told him look if you sign that deal with the Bucks they’re gonna trade you in your little dirty from from the rockets and uh the other teams which were the eyebrow raising teams the Los Angeles Lakers uh in one sense you get that fit and the Dallas Maverick so let’s let’s start with the Lakers let’s start with the two teams that I raised an eyebrow on upon reading um I get it and certainly Brook Lopez spent that one year in Los Angeles it was one of those man I guess I suppose we should have kept him for what the Bucks signed him for conversations Laker fans had you you look to what Minnesota did with the size in their front Court you’d be doing the same thing if you get Brook Lopez when you think about Carl Anthony towns and Rudy gobear playing alongside each other McDaniels as well you would have Anthony Davis at your four Brook Lopez at the five and LeBron James that’s your front Court pretty pretty big the big challenge with the Lakers is certainly everything we’ve discussed with the bucks when you talk about cap situations in the spot that the Lakers are currently in their their salary is $178 million um so just under the first apron level but that’s just with 12 players under contract they don’t have a whole lot of movable deals I I don’t Envision Austin Reeves coming to the Bucks in a trade for Brooklyn Lopez you got Gabe Vincent the Bucks would certainly be looking for more than Gabe Vincent Jared Vanderbilt certainly an intriguing player and if you brought in Brook Lopez and we talked about that front Court it kind of reduces the fit for Jared Vanderbilt uh I don’t know that he answers all the questions for the bucks so it’s one that on paper it makes sense I just don’t know the Avenue for making this work for both sides it feels like this would clearly be a three team trade and as Brian Windor always says if you got to make a three- team trade you don’t have a trade yeah it’s one of those things where it seems like ideally this would fit with us we’ve talked about everything that Brook Lopez brings to the table as a stretch five in addition to his Rim protection um and that’s going to be attractive to a lot of contending teams but it’s like Rob pinka was mentioning in his press here with JJ where it’s like it’s harder to make these trades right now because we are operating as if we’re probably going to be a first apron team and we are trying to engage in trade with other teams that are first or second apron it is just really hard to make those trades because you can’t aggregate salaries you have to make sure the dollar amount is matches like there’s just so many different Con constrictions on it where it’s like how do you make this happen so I could see them having interest for sure but a pathway to really making it work that the numbers just don’t seem to add up here and it’s not as if the Lakers have many assets to attach to that as well which it’s so interesting to think about of needing an asset to attach to get Brook Lopez who were like you know he’s oh we want to trade an older guy for a younger guy and all that that goes into that but I just don’t think the Lakers have it now like you mentioned the Grizzlies makes a lot of sense a lot of the trade buzz and draft Buzz we’ve heard around them is them trying to acquire a center whether that’s in the draft or Bea trade so Brook Lopez would be a really good fit there as you mentioned we’ve mentioned the Pelicans time and time again um and just because like we know they had interest in trading Brandon Ingram does seem like a fit in Milwaukee I don’t see that working out here um but again the typee of Center that he is he fits next to Zion it helps to have that five out offense that will give him more space to operate so the teams listed make a lot of sense Mavericks I don’t understand that one too much though of all of them that’s the one I was like wait really the Mavericks um but I mean we’re gonna hear it I’ll be really interesting to seeing if night one of the trade of the uh NBA draft if we do see the Bucks make a trade whether that is with Brook Lopez or Bobby poris or Pat connington um just really seemed as if the bugs have really active on these phones and trying to make something happen Grizzlies are a very interesting team I do want to get into um them and I think the name that everybody would gravitate towards and really did for the last 12 months with the Memphis Grizzlies because that’s a name we’ve started to see circulating elsewhere as well so we’ll get into that conversation and just the overall View and sense of what teams especially those in the spot that the Bucks are in are going to do here with this first round of the draft with their first round picks we’ll get into that conversation coming up after the break here unlocked on bucks passion drive and patience that is the formula us customers Memphis Grizzlies are an interesting team and I mentioned there’s one name that I think everybody is going to uh gravitate towards that is Marcus Smart um I did see a report on Tuesday that uh the Grizzlies there there may be a market for Marcus Smart for draft picks and let’s just tackle it in that sense so Memphis similar to what we talked about with the Lakers you’d be beefing up your front Court I know you have jiren Jackson Jr but he is best served really in the world that the Bucs use Giannis in next to Brook Lopez where he’s the ultimate help Defender and can do a lot of those things on the perimeter and a weak side a guy that can come over and get those blocked shots you had Brook Lopez there that helps him out immensely um we all wondered what is you know the situ ation with Marcus SM when they made that trade a year ago you wondered okay is this kind of a holding pattern and they’re eventually going to move him then when the season slipped away I think we all thought okay he’s definitely getting traded then he gets injured so with John Morant coming back and not only coming back with a big Spotlight on him and I think very very high expectations of hey we need you to be the guy we envisioned you to be can you do that with Marcus Smart in the same backourt so let let say the Grizzlies are looking uh to make this deal similar spot when you look at some of the players they have under contract and what it would take to get it done they’re not trading you Brandon Clark for Brook Lopez at least I would think not and I don’t know it helps you but I don’t know that that’s primarily the fit that you’re looking for if you’re the Bucks to me on paper this one would make the most sense and I I know we had the conversation about trading size for perimeter guys and what do you do in the front Court then if it’s hey Yannis it’s you and Bobby poris for now but this is the one I keep coming back to because to me it makes the most sense Marcus Smart would fit the timeline that the Bucks have with the current players under contract he signed through the 2526 season and it’s just $2 million it goes up to 21 in that final year that’s gonna feel like nothing if the cap keeps going up 10% year after year um and certainly as we talked about finding that right back court mate with Damen Lillard you had Marcus smt who regardless of how uh Justified you think it was is an NBA Defensive Player of the Year that’s exactly what you’re looking for a combo guard and a guy that can take on those defensive assignments and switch one through three depending on the matchup four sometimes as well to kind of Shield some of that burden from Damen Lillard I definitely I agree with you on that one I think that it’s a great fit uh but then the question becomes what else do you do like that could not be the only thing that the B did because you have a glaring need at that Center position and like we’ve discussed um until I hear otherwise we have heard from Giannis that he does not necessarily enjoy playing that five position so if he’s not open to rotating into that role who is it that you’re gonna pair next to him now you mentioned is it Bobby poris or is Bobby poris using the trade to get someone else like how much turnover do we actually see with this roster and then thinking about the Memphis Grizzlies fit with Brook Lopez I think it’s on court fit for sure uh but some of the reports that we’ve been hearing around the draft is that you know the Grizzlies are looking to move up like you mentioned to get those draft picks it’s been a lot of Buzz around the rockets and then Grizzlies possibly making a trade with you know the the Rockets trading that number three spot uh which would put the Grimley in a position to get you know Donovan Clingan or another big that they might be looking to Target there so it’s one of those things like do you want to try to flip this for a draft pick for an unproven commodity uh that has potential or do you want to try to flip this player uh to get a more established bet and I don’t know which way the Grizzlies would lean with that but for the bucks I mean yeah we’ve heard that what they’re looking to do is have a more versatile defense so you have a player like Marcus Smart on the perimeter and that solves a lot of problems that we’ve talked about he had what 63 maybe 64 on a good day um so he’s not a super big Wing but he has the strength and the size um and experience of playing up as well so you would feel comfortable I would think with a Damen Lillard Marcus Smart backc Court uh going out there it’s just the question of what is the Grizzlies appetite for that um it seems to me based on just what has been Flo around that they might be more interested in going a little bit younger there um and trying to get one of these new prospects that continue to grow on with this team because the West is crazy right I mean and Markus smart is 30 years old he’s six years older then John Morant and uh jiren Jackson Jr in their timeline so they might be looking to get a big that you know could kind of fit within their little timeline a little bit better as well um Marcus smarts by the way is essentially the exact same size as Drew holiday they’re both 6’4 Marcus Smart’s listed at 220 Drew holiday’s listed at 205 um we kind of talked about at the time of the trade too and and Bucks fan circled back to that name of okay could you replace Drew holiday with Marcus smartt um he is basically a poor man’s Drew holiday that Drew holiday is certainly a much more skilled version and a better Defender I think more versatile uh as well but you would at least check off some of what you missed there the big piece to that would be how do you add some more depth in the front Court what does that mean for Bobby poris whose name we’ve heard circulating quite a bit as well um you know we we kind of mentioned too in the the draft that we did for lockdown you saw a run on bigs and Kell wear was not available in the 20s and we’ve seen more and more mocks where he’s starting to move up in the draft boards but again I know what Derek Lively did last year was great which which even more why it’s perplexing to me that the Mavs would reportedly be showing interest in uh Brook Lopez but it’s also not the norm you can’t expect let’s say the Bucks do get Kell Weare in the draft the expectation should not be he’s going to step in and do exactly what uh we saw from Derrik Lively a year ago if he does great but that’s not the norm that you see especially with bigs it takes time it’s usually a two-year thing with big guys in the league um so that would be the interesting piece I suppose the last thing we’d say because as we both agree I think of all these teams listed this would make the most sense and you mentioned the Grizzlies waned to get younger as well Marcus smt being 30 does that fit with um their timeline well Brook Lopez is 36 but I think part of that is that conversation we had um in the discussion with Van to of look he’s still productive regardless of what some of those comments were Brook Lopez is still very productive uh for what you ask him to do and it’s an expiring contract right so it’s one less year on the deal than Marcus Smart has the Grizzlies could look at this and say either this is exactly what we needed he has that familiarity with Taylor Jenkins and Taylor would know how to utilize him maybe it doesn’t work we can trade him again at the deadline because he’s an expiring deal and we can get something for him or if he leaves or retires in the off season we got $20 million in cap space that’s cleared up for a team that’s on the fringes of getting into those aprons so I could talk myself into it if I’m the Memphis Grizzlies especially again given you’ve got johnar and Desmond Bane in your back court Marcus Smart at this point is a LX I think the big question is what else would it take I have a hard time believing it would just be a straight one for one swap here so what other sweeteners would the Bucs have to throw in and is this something that the Grizzlies view look we can get better value for Marcus smt I mentioned there was a report out there of potentially a lottery pick that they were looking at in exchange for Marcus smartt so distilling it down here does it make sense to you for the Grizzlies how realistic would that deal be centered around those two guys not taking into account what else the Bucks would potentially have to throw in could you see it being made I could see it being made if I was the Grizzlies I don’t think I would go that route I get the appeal of it because the other aspect of it is thinking of the fact that the West has gotten a lot better like you just had a year where everything went wrong so it was pretty much like an impromptu just like this is a sale year like it just is not going to pan out for us understanding that with John Morant healthy with him being the engine that makes that team go with jiren Jackson J with he with Desmond Bay you have a really good court if you want to make a move where you’re just kind of pushing everything in like we’re going to try to go for it this season we believe in it this year uh I could see leaning on a veteran like Brook Lopez who has Championship experience as well to kind of come in and help try to get through the West uh but thinking of long-term building if I was the Grizzlies I would probably go the route of looking to trade up in the draft and get one of these bigs that has been heralded I mean again we’ve talked about this draft class it’s not seen as like a Superstars at the top um but there are some really interesting bigs at the top of the draft um and again that fits your timeline a little bit better with the age as well so if I was the Grizzlies I would probably go that route rather than trying to acquire Brook Lopez yeah um I think we both agree Brooke is the most interesting name to keep an eye on here these next uh what couple of days into free agency which already begins days from now as the draft is tonight and then free agency is um here speaking of the draft I do want to get some of those comments by Bobby marks about how teams are going to view the first round it’s something we touched on a little bit in our conversation about the offseason as a whole with van and also remind you about what we have planned for tomorrow on lock on bucks we we’ll get into that after this on lock on bucks well I love sports and I love them so much I never want them to stop but as the playoffs wind down here the NBA Finals ended a week ago we had the NHL Stanley Cup Final just ending two days ago now that it’s winding down we get fewer games and the sports just aren’t sporting like I want them to but FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I’m in the mood this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so head to fanduel.com lockon and start making the most of your summer FanDuel official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball all right as uh we transition now into what’s in store for us tomorrow um Bobby marks on the uh most recent low poost podcast was talking about how team teams especially in the second apron are going to be handling the first round and we got into this conversation with Van on that two-part show that we did looking at the off season really centering in on the cost of first round draft picks in terms of salary and their salary slot is that something where you’re going to see teams give up on that and essentially Kick the Can down the road now if you’re a team like the bucks or a team like the Suns certainly the uh the Clippers the Warriors you can’t send out cash in a deal you can’t buy second round picks like we used to see quite a bit the last handful of uh years but will we see teams trade that first round pick because of that salary slot that it’s going to be and say well we can save a little bit of money if we do basically what the Bucks did the year they won the NBA Championship Where They Carried guys on those final two roster spots they kept an open spot too remember they carried 14 guys but you had Jordan war on the team you had Sam Meo on the team not on two-way deals on NBA deals to save you some money is that something the teams are going to be doing more of uh Bobby Marx seems to think yes and he has already started to hear some Intel and Rumblings that the Phoenix Suns are one of those teams that’s saying look the first round pick that uh that we do own right now number 22 one spot in front of the Bucks it’s available whoever wants it give us a handful of second round picks we can use that down the road in trades assuming we can navigate our way out of this second apron or we’ll just make a second round pick save a little bit of money and add that player as our 12 13th 14th guy on the roster so according to Bobby marks we are starting to see or hear more and more of teams doing that you’re starting to hear not only the Suns um the Pelicans were a number another team that was reportedly discussing that the Lakers as well that that first round pick overall seems to be up for grabs and open for business for the Lakers but the Suns and Bucks are probably the two teams that fit that bill the most and the most interesting to keep an eye on there Celtics as well picking number 30 can you turn that into a second round pick next year a second round pick this year for a team that’s looking at it and saying this guy you know we didn’t get him in the first round we couldn’t get there around 25 or so that’s the guy targeting we want to move up there and get him so that’s another thing to keep in mind here with this first round pick that the Bucks hold I think we spent quite a bit of time saying do you use that as a sweetener now you can’t trade it prior to the pick being made but you could draft that player and attach him with Pat conon let’s say and send that out now it’s the rights to that player so it’s not as though you’re aggregating contracts and sending it out you can do that on draft night you just can’t traded in advance is that something that the Bucks do we we spent quite a bit of time talking about that not so much that do they just save money and say let’s turn this 23rd overall pick into maybe an additional second round pick this year or just second rounders down the road that we can kind of refill our cabinet as well and use those for future trades when you think about how many they gave up through the years for PJ Tucker for Jay Crowder and all those other moves that the bucks made uh these last handful of years so we’ve started to hear those Rumblings that hey teams very very deep into the second apron they are looking to save money and one way to do that is by trading their first round draft pick moving down and uh and getting more and more second round picks so that’s another interesting angle to keep an eye on later tonight for the bucks and what they decide to do in the first round of this draft but this to me is the most intriguing NBA draft that we have seen for the bucks in quite some time now because of that because of all the second apron penalties starting to kick in teams starting to figure out how do we navigate this how do we get out of this how important is that to us we’ve had the conversation last few years of what do you do with the first round pick or through the years I should say what do you do with the first- round pick do you keep it do you get younger do you trade it for something and attach it as a sweetener with another player so that part of this equation is is you know nothing new that we’ve dealt with but the the cap implications are the big piece and to me what makes it even more interesting this year than in uh years’s past the draft gets started tonight at uh 7 PM central time that is when the first round begins we’ve mentioned quite a bit uh Camille and I are going to do a live show later on tonight um so we are going to react to everything that starts to happen as this draft unfolds it’s going to be a very interesting draft too because you feel like of all the mock drafts we’ve seen it’s a very good chance all of them are going to get blown up when you see so much variance of who’s slotted to go where so we plan on going live right as uh the lottery portion is ending rather than sliding it into a specific time and saying hey we’re going to go an hour into the draft we’re going to start at 8 or 8:30 we’re GNA go as soon as the lottery ends and we kind of aligned on that because maybe 15 but somewhere in that region because of the teams that are going to be picking as soon as you get out of the lottery and and um that’s really starting to get close to where the Bucks are so once you get out of that you got the Heats the Sixers the Lakers shortly thereafter the Cavs the Pelicans the Suns and then of course the bucks at 23 so once we wrap up the lottery we’ll go live to react to what we’ve seen so far who ends up going number one do the Hawks keep the pick does anybody jump up there into the first eight or so draft picks here in San Antonio maybe shopping one of their two picks Houston might have that pick up for grabs uh as well maybe even Portland with the uh the multiple first round picks that they have so we’re going to go live as soon as the lottery portion of the draft ends react to what’s unfolded so far have there been any trades involving players even outside of the Bucks we’ll get to that reaction and then shortly afterwards will be on the air live as the Bucks make their pick or decide to trade that pick so uh join us live tomorrow night as the lottery portion of the draft wraps up that is when we are going to go live it may be a very long show too as these drafts tend to uh go on for quite a bit of time especially if the Bucks are making some moves there’s going to be a lot to react to so be sure to join us live on YouTube here as soon as the lottery portion of the draft wraps up later on this evening Wednesday night uh for the live portion of the show we’re still working to see if we can get somebody else to jump onto the stream with us I think you know who that is uh if not we do think we’re gonna have Frank giving his reaction to any moves made on night one on Wednesday or anything else that we’ve seen trickle out here for the bucks we’ll get to that uh the day after but live live reaction to the first round of the draft just as the lottery wraps up be so be sure to uh Circle back here and join us on YouTube for the live stream of uh draft coverage later on this evening as we mentioned it’s already here it’s as we we’ve had now two straight off seasons of feeling like man it took forever to get to free agency because the Bucs were bounced in the first round and now we’re here into the off season it is draft day day one at least of the two-day Affair of the NBA draft and then days later free agency is going to be here so a lot coming up here on the channel over the course of the next couple of days be sure to come back later on this evening for the live component of our draft night special for Camille I’m Justin we’ll talk to you once again later on this evening unlocked on bucks
Justin and Camille dig into the latest rumblings about Bucks players being made available and what we’re hearing in regards to draft picks league wide. Will Wednesday be a busy day for multiple teams? Will the second apron teams trade first round picks for future seconds? And will we see any players moved by the Bucks?
