Memphis Grizzlies 2024 NBA Draft Preview/Brandon Clarke on Team Canada absence

Memphis Grizzlies 2024 NBA Draft Preview/Brandon Clarke on Team Canada absence

on this Wednesday and NBA Draft firstr preview edition of lockon Grizzlies I’m going to start off the show by talking about Brandon Clark a current member of the Grizzlies and why he will not be representing Team Canada this time around in the Olympics plus we will talk about my predictions for the NBA drafts first round what will Memphis do where will they pick will they stay at nine trade up trade back and then we will Define draft success and failure at the end of the first round what will make it a success what will make it not so much if Memphis goes down a certain Road it’s a Draft preview of lock on Grizzlies let’s lock in you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome everyone happy NBA draft first round to those who celebrate again chances are you celebrate if you’re checking out this podcast it is I Joe Mullen X flying solo this time around no to Michael Cole very busy around the NBA Draft Marcus Smart dropping interviews about the Boston Celtics and the amazingness of John Morant all sorts of different coverage that he has to provide over at the Commercial Appeal so it’ll be me guiding you through a firstr preview edition of lockdown Grizzlies thank you so much for being here with me today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as playoffs wind down the Stanley Cup has concluded obviously the NBA Finals as well Sports Stop sporting like we want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone each and every day all summer long visit fanduel.com lockon to get started we are free and available wherever you get podcasts as proud members of the locked on podcast Network your team each and every day like comment rate review subscribe at Apple Amazon Spotify wherever you get Podcast check us out on YouTube as well like comment rate review subscribe again make us a part of your NBA and Memphis Grizzlies content consumption each and every time an episode drops as June closes July begins next week we go right into free agency summer league I like that about the NBA right they’re offseason is very front-loaded uh the month of August and you know Late July obviously we have the Olympics this year we can talk about but you go from the NBA Finals to the draft to free agency all sorts of different content for us to discuss here on lockdown G and we’re going to start off with that Olympic idea because obviously the NBA draft is coming up don’t worry this episode’s going to have plenty of draft content but I did want to lead off with an important piece that uh to Michel Cole my co-host obviously not with us as I mentioned the lead Memphis Grizzlies beat writer over at the Commercial Appeal uh sports writer Jonah Dylan went to a also of the Commercial Appeal went to an me a Memphis gries event on Tuesday and he had a chance to talk to Clark about his rehab Team Canada not being a representative for Team Canada in the Olympics this year if Clark were fully healthy chances are he would have made that Squad you would imagine but he of course is not fully healthy and he has quoted in the article talking about how he hasn’t had a normal summer in a couple of Summers really trying to make sure he is good with his Achilles his calf strengthening the muscles and everything going on around that injury no disrespect to Team Canada who is trying to met at the Olympics they have a pretty impressive team no denying that shy gildas Alexander Jamal Murray Andrew Wiggins just a few of the names that represent Team Canada Brandon Clark has never really been able to be a part of that process he certainly wants to be but because of injuries or whatever else may be going on with his off season he has been able to represent Canada uh this time around what he is to the Grizzlies takes precedent and it most certainly should coming off of such a serious injury with that Achilles and again he talked about with Dylan uh Jonah the idea of that calf and how that was a concern trying to strengthen it rehab it when you tear an attend in like the Achilles it’s not just that particular injury that is impacted right the muscles around it the leg as a whole if you’ve ever suffered an injury like that and I am fortunate enough in my life that I haven’t but I’ve certainly been around people that have it’s not just that spot where the catastrophic issue occurs heard it’s the muscles and the tendons and everything that surrounds it that gets weakened or changes after the surgery you need to address the entire issue so you don’t have repeats of the problem that’s a significant piece of this and that is something that it’s good to see him talk about in terms of his physical abilities and focuses going in to a very important season not just for himself but for the Memphis Grizzlies as a whole the leap ability of Clark is so significant to all of this right the The Reaping and that’s one of the reasons that it’s good to see him prioritizing this we talk a lot about the vertical lob threat and how significant that is going into next season the connection to the success that Dallas Mavericks had in the playoffs Clark is that guy where it was Daniel Gafford Derek Lively Clark can be that finisher for Memphis he has been in the past seeing him alongside John Morant the newly uh developed playmaker that is Desmond Bane it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch that develop and unfold and if he were playing with Team Canada Not only would there be concerns about his overall health although in theory he’s he’s at full strength Assuming he’s playing international basketball but not only would there be you know a little bit of nerves in Memphis about what Clark was doing overseas there would also be concerns about losing reps potentially with a soon to be cleared as we talked about recently on lockdown Grizzlies John Morant he talked about attending Summer League and that’s a big deal here in a few weeks that is something that if he was doing International ball if he was getting ready for the Olympics maybe a trip to summer league would not be in the cards for Brandon Clark because he is not playing for Team Canada he can go and be a part of those practices we talked about that recently here on the show that doesn’t mean that Brandon Clark’s gonna play Summer League don’t yell at me right it’s not like he and John morance are gonna put up you know a combined 100 points in a summer league game that’s not what I’m referencing I’m talking about practices I’m talking about him being around Grizzlies training staff checking in on rehab I’m sure a lot of that work is being done in and around the facility but it’s just different in a practice setting obviously the Grizzlies aren’t fully practicing right now they might have workouts and that sort of stuff but they don’t have what summer league simulates right Sim summer league is as close to the season as you get in the off season so for Clark to have the chance to be around the team be around the training staff to have the the development of the camaraderie with those guys you know if GG Jackson plays Summer League other young players possibly being in that mix whoever the Grizzlies draft which we’ll talk more about here momentarily that holds value beyond what Clark would do for the international team at least from the perspective of the Grizzlies right now you hear these guys talk about how significant it is to play for your country your home nation obviously that’s one of the reasons Kevin Durant LeBron James and Steph Curry they’re all one last ride with this Olympic team right before they age out into the sunset chances are they will not be a part of the 2020 eight Olympics in Los Angeles although that would be kind of fitting I do believe that this uh franchise the Memphis Grizzlies is a lot more dependent on Clark and his full return to health Than People realize switch ability defensively that leap ability offensively like I talked about earlier he matters a lot more than we let on we talk a lot about Donovan kingan and we’ll talk about Donovan kingan later on in the show we talk a lot about the need to address the big man position chances are whoever they acquire barring some seismic trade that nobody really foresees Clark is almost certainly GNA be the second best big on this team next season if they draft Donovan kingan I don’t think he’s better than Brandon Clark right out of the gate now he might start because he’s a true Center but if kingan’s only playing 20 to 25 minutes a night Clark’s gonna eat a lot of those other minutes he’s going to be the most important Reserve big in the NBA potentially a sixth man big man essentially for Memphis Clark is The X Factor if Clark can come back and be what he was be that Elite finisher at The Rim that player that’s able to get off the court and then get off the court again that will hold a lot of weight with whether the Memphis Grizzlies are the two or three seed in the Western Conference or the six or seven seed that’s the definition of an X Factor and Clark is most certainly that for the Grizzlies this coming season so uh Jonah Dylan again great reporting talking about Brandon Clark not being on Team Canada I’m sure that’s disappointing personally but as somebody who follows the Memphis Grizzlies I’m okay with it to be honest with you because he’s coming off of an injury if he was full strength and he wanted to go represent Canada by all means go do it have a great summer jiren Jackson junior of course recently did it in the FBA tournament for Team USA that’s fantastic it’s a chance to grow play around the most elite players on the planet different level of competition different type of competition maybe I should say that’s a great opportunity he’s not healthy he’s strengthening and getting ready for what is a pretty important season for the Memphis Grizzlies and for himself to show that he is still capable of being what Memphis needs him to be whether there was a choice to be made or not that’s that’s up to Team Canada and Brandon but if it was Brandon’s Choice it’s good to hear if it was his injury obviously that needs to be the priority going into the next season let me know what you think of Brandon Clark we’ll obviously talk more about him being X Factor going into next season but how you feel about him not playing for Team Canada do you feel bad for him do you wish he had gone are you glad that he’s able to focus on himself and getting ready for the season ahead for the Memphis Grizzlies when we come back here on lockdown Grizzlies we’re going to get into NBA draft previews we’re going to talk about when you can watch the draft all those sorts of things and some predictions of what the Memphis Grizzlies will do at least in the first round coming up next here on lock on here on lockdown Grizzlies previewing the first round of the NBA draft stick with us welcome back to lockdown Grizzlies I am Joe mullenax happy to be here with with you missing demichel Cole as I always do when I am flying solo but he’s a busy guy this time around obviously a lot of things going on for him and it’s great to have all the amazing content that he’s doing there with the Commercial Appeal I talked about Jonah Dylan his colleague there at the Commercial Appeal and all the different type of things that he is doing talking about Brandon Clark and that sort of stuff uh now it’s time to get into the next Grizzly the newest Grizzly it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch all of this play out and how Memphis is going to address this right so for those of you that don’t know the NBA draft has been broken into two nights right we talked about this recently Wednesday June 26 that is only the first round the draft will start at 800 PM Eastern Time chances are it’ll be over around 11 or so uh obviously 30 NBA teams it’s located there in the Barkley Center there in Brooklyn New York ESPN and ABC will be broadcasting the first round the Memphis Grizzlies currently hold the number nine pick in this draft I say currently because the Memphis Grizzlies have been rumored to be in the mix to trade up now Kevin o’conor of the ringer has recently come out and said Memphis will not be doing the trade that we’ve talked about on here in a recent episode Marcus Smart and three for nine or excuse me and nine for three I’m cool with that I’m not necessarily saying you can’t trade Marcus Smart the fit is questionable I’m cool with keeping smart because we haven’t seing this thing at Full Tilt just yet but I’m also more than okay with not sending him to the Houston Rockets as part of an attempt to get up to three in the Athletics most recent NBA draft mock their last one going into tonight they had the Memphis Grizzlies trading with the Detroit Pistons get sending out a future protected first as well as number nine for number five and securing the services of Donovan kingan again when there’s smoke there’s fire and I think that the most likely scenario for the Memphis grizzley coming out of Wednesday if they have their way is Donovan kingan is rocking be Street blue now there’s folks on social media that are not super excited about that they don’t like how he has foot injury issues considering or a history of foot injuries considering his size they aren’t super excited about having another limited from range big how does that impact the offense those sorts of things I get all those concerns but as we talked about yesterday Donovan kingan brings exactly just about what Stephen Adams brought to the table and he might be better at those things right now than Adams was during his time in Memphis that matters and the fact that the Memphis Grizzlies won 112 regular season games over the prior two seasons before this past one that just concluded with Adams is one of their primary bigs that matters a lot maybe that doesn’t help in the playoffs Maybe doesn’t but the Memphis Grizzlies have to find a way to maximize their three stars and they know they have Visual Evidence that a traditional big who excels at screen setting who excels as a passer on the elbow who is a elite rebounder and a really solid rim protector that kind of guy matters a lot and that is what Donovan kingan is so if Memphis does indeed move up I think five or six is the most natural place for that if you’re worried about the Charlotte Hornet taking him at six you got to get the five and you’re kind of at the mercy of the Pistons I do think the Memphis Grizzlies will make a trade I do think that will happen that is my first prediction and it’s kind of a copout right because Zack kman has made trades just about every time that he’s done a draft in fact he has done a trade every time he’s done a draft with the Memphis Grizzlies the unique thing about this draft of course it’s over the span of two nights so is it possible that on Thursday he goes out there and he makes a second round trade too yeah that’s possible but we’re talking about the first round here demichel will have you covered for the second round conversation on the Thursday episode but the reality of the situation is this they need a big and we’ll talk about defining success or failure coming out of the first round I would be mildly surprised if they don’t come out of the first round with a big man in some way shape or form now notice I didn’t say that they draft a big is it possible still that they pair number nine with a couple of contracts like a John Kar and a zier Williams and see what that gets them around the league for an NBA proven starting caliber big I don’t think that’s out of the room of possibility at all there’s all sorts of different smokees screens this time of year Donovan kingan’s agent should be getting a raise the fact that the Atlanta Hawks have been linked to kingan as the number one overall pick that seems extremely unlikely and I say that as a clinging guy the Hawks taking him at one overall would be surprising at at least to me but the fact it’s being brought up somebody’s putting it out there and I have a feeling it’s not the Atlanta Hawks so if kingan’s stock continues to rise and it would cost too much to move up to three they could acquire a big and another way they could go out there and find a player like a Wendell Carter Jr from Orlando potentially they could go out there and find a yaka purle from Toronto potentially there’s possibilities right there’s options Memphis can address this in a variety of ways I think they want kinging I think they like the idea of a cost controlled big over the next four years and a first round pick and I do think that is my second prediction that they will draft a big in the first round and again they or they will get a big in the first round and that might feel like a cop out but they are going to do their best to make this season a successful one the pressure is on especially for Jenkins to a lesser extent Zack kimman they know that they have to turn this thing around the Memphis grizli fan base is understanding they’re patient they got what happened injury-wise this past year we talked about the home record in the past we talked about the first 25 games in the past there are things that are red flags from last season that need to be addressed and one of the biggest ones is the big man so whether they trade for somebody whether they select at nine I do think a big will become a member of the Memphis Grizzlies my third prediction for Memphis is they will be rumored at least and potentially involved in being part of a three- team trade that facilitates something bigger because the Grizzlies still have all their first round picks the Grizzlies have contracts like Kar like zire Williams they have a traded player exception of about1 million they have all their first round picks still they have the capacity to be flexible and malleable and move around this draft that other teams may not have Brandon Ingram has been the name that has been most rumored to be on the move this week Memphis could be a part of facilitating a trade for Ingram to go somewhere else I’m not saying that Ingram’s coming to Memphis I’m saying that if a player here pay with an asset there the Grizzlies are well positioned to be able to help any team that needs to get something done for the right price so those are my three predictions one the Grizzlies will come out of the first round with a big somehow not be a drafted big but they will have added a true Big Man by the end of the first round on Wednesday night number two they are going to have a trade made some sort of trade they are going to do something to move up maybe they move back I think it’s going to be to move up they have all these assets and their own first for a reason I think they want to try do their best to move up for a guy like kingan kingan goes somewhere before they can get to him obviously all bets are off after that but but I think they’re going to make some sort of first round trade and then I also think that there’s going to be rumors at the very least of them being connected to a bigger deal trying to find ways to get future assets to maintain that future flexibility so those are my predictions for tonight let me know what you think in the comments do you agree disagree do you think they’re not going to get a big do you think they’re going to go a wing a guard do you think that you know the trade stuff is all smoking mirrors they’re not going to move out of nine you think they may not be able to find a trade partner at n let me know in the comments when we come back here on locked out Grizzlies we’re going to locked on Grizzlies we’re going to close out this NBA Draft preview defining draft success and failure for Memphis coming up tonight but first I want Grizzlies closing out this NBA Draft preview episode discussing success and failure and what it should look like for Memphis coming out of the first round tonight stick with us welcome back to lockon Grizzlies I am Joe Mullen X flying solo demichel Cole will be with you solo on the Thursday edition of the show he will review everything that happened in the first round not just from a Memphis perspective but the NBA at large Zack kimman will have been available to the uh to demichel and other members of the Memphis media same thing with whoever is selected drafted whatever the case might be assuming Memphis makes a pick all that will happen de Michel will have all of that for you and more on our Thursday edition of the show looking forward to watching and listening to it myself we’re closing out this Wednesday preview episode talking about what would make tonight a success and what would make tonight a failure at least to me and we’ll start with the bad because I like to end on a positive note what would make tonight a failure if the Memphis Grizzlies select somebody that cannot play with John Morant it’s a failure in my eyes and that probably won’t surprise you if you’re in every day or you check out the podcast every time it drops you know that is a Line in the Sand for me Reed Shepard could very well be awesome maybe he’s the second coming of Steph Curry I like how he defends maybe he’s a poor man’s curry with a little bit of Alex Caruso defense to him he plays passing Lanes well the advanced numbers love him if Reed Shepard fell to Memphis at nine which isn’t going to happen maybe I could be talked into it but if Memphis were to trade up for Reed Shepard for me that would be a failure and maybe you disagree with that and that’s totally fine you’re allowed to disagree of course it’s all opinions here but as the host of this here episode of lockon Grizzlies I don’t want to see another guard who is roughly the same size or smaller than in the case of Shepard johnar being taken with this pick because it does not dress address an immediate need Memphis needs a big Memphis needs a three and D Wing that can handle a little bit they need shooting Reed Shepard checks that last box but he only checks one one box and that box is not the biggest box that Memphis needs because they have players like a Scotti Pippen Jr a Derrick Rose a Desmond Bane they need a true player that can fit alongside Morant if they take somebody that doesn’t to me that’s a failure on a smaller scale if they draft a project right if they draft a project like a Ron Holland am I going to say that’s a failure of a pick no because we’re not going to have any idea for two three years whether or not that was the right selection but Memphis needs to compete now the window is open now this is not the Washington Wizards this is not the Charlotte Hornets this is not the San Antonio Spurs although I think their Windows opening a little bit earlier than they anticipated with how good wanyama has been these Grizzlies need to compete and Ron Holland while he may wind up being the best player in this draft he’s not ready to do that at the highest level for Championship contending team right now so I’d be more disappointed by a player that can’t play alongside jaw because Holland can play by play alongside JW that’s no problem I would be more disappointed by a non jawar compatible guard being selected but if it’s somebody that’s another project that tells me that Memphis isn’t serious about contention which would be disappointing because they made the Marcus Smart trade which very much looked like a team trying to be serious about contention what would make tonight a success if they got that big so I’m predicting success if you’re following along with this episode dear listener dear viewer I said that they are going to get a big man tonight if that occurs check the box success but they don’t have to get that big if the draft board doesn’t shake out the way they want it to if khil we isn’t there if they don’t want to reach at nine for Zack Edy there are ways for them to find that option in a tradeback there are ways for them to package that pick with other contracts to trade for somebody else as we talked about earlier in the show they can still get that done if it’s not Donovan kingan but they have to have a big and that would define success for me again not going to say everything is lost they have other ways that they can get a big man if Dalton connect is the pick and they want to address the bigs in the second round or free agency I be cool with dton connect because he checks that shooting box and he’s ready to compete now right two of the three boxes he’s not a big but connect can come in and help you win now he is seasoned he dominated at the SEC level last season sign me up for Dalton connect if that’s the decision Devan Carter I think is ready to go and he can play alongside John Morant that would be okay a player that can help this team win now because Memphis is in a win now mode and and I think that that is the Crux of all the different conversations that have been had over what this draft is for the Memphis Grizzlies and I’ll put a nice little bow on it here best player available May well be Ron Holland best player available May absolutely be somebody who is a project somebody like a Rob Dillingham who has gone underappreciated I would say in this draft process you want to talk about a true Talent an athletic freak Rob Dillingham is that there’s an outside chance that Dillingham is better than Shephard in the NBA at least in my opinion I see some Russell Westbrook in his game maybe you’re looking at somebody like a Cody Williams who can score the rock what else can he do for you to help you win what can those guys be especially a player like a Holland especially a player like a Cody Williams maybe in the long run there’s something greater than aulton connect is right now maybe their ceiling is higher and maybe you’re a draft Nick who wants that type of guy I get that and there was a time for these Memphis Grizzlies where I would have supported that logic 100% that’s the move add talents around this core but the core has been established dear listener dear viewer you’ve got your Superstar you’ve got your Fringe Allstars you’ve nailed a couple of second round picks you you nailed the GG Jackson selection so much multiple draft analysts say that GG Jackson would be a lottery pick in this draft if he were still in it so you already have a lottery pick in the [Music] bag that doesn’t mean that you can take another swing in my opinion it’s winning time you’ve got your project in GG Jackson you’ve got your guy that two or three years ago could be the third best player on this team second best player on this team I think that’s possible he’s already here now is the time to go get somebody that you know can help you compete in the playoffs and number one in on that list is a big man number one is a big man with the way that this roster is constructed if it’s drafting them trading for them signing them whatever the case might be we’re talking about the NBA draft right now Donovan kingan he’s been my guy since the beginning you go get Donovan kingan if he’s still on the board at five you give up another first round pick you make that happen you keep Luke Canard you see what this team looks like with all those pieces in place first apron be damned it’s time to win if kingan is gone draft Dalton connect figure out a way to get a big down the road those would be successes a guy that can’t play next to your very best player failure a guy that is not in line to help you win now a failure and that’s not always the way it should be but that is the way that it should be for the Memphis Grizzlies because it is time to win thank you for checking out this episode of lockon Grizzlies it is much appreciated as I mentioned earlier demichel will be with you for our Thursday edition of the show reviewing whatever happens in the first round tonight previewing the second round on Thursday all sorts of great content he’s going to be there listening to 1. I love the show, I really do but the fact you guys don't interact with your chat really hurts the experience.

  2. Yeah I would be happy with Edey he has that chip on his shoulder where he wants to prove his doubters wrong. Nothing wrong with that. I'd rather Edey than Clingan, but either would be be great. We just really need a big.

  3. Joe has such a big head and still cant get that Edey is better than Clingan /
50%free throw clingan biggest problem no bag around the post /
Edey has every thing better beside the passing 3:26 i think he didn’t watch the ncaa

  4. NBA draft is not the place to look for starting center positions. Name a good center drafted top 5 in the last 5 years – none since Embid. I see Mitchell Robinson fits our squad but we have to draft Dalton Kinecht

  5. I’m with team Edey he bested clingon then and he’ll best him in the nba. He’s faster with more stamina and less injuries. Don’t tell me he can’t do at least everything Steven Adams did. That’s his floor.

  6. Trading up for Clingan is a disaster draft in my opinion. I watched him get abused by Edey in the national championship. Imagine what NBA centers are going to do to him. Give me Ron Holland or Dalton Knect at 9 then get back in the first round somehow and take your center.

  7. The proposal I saw was Smart another player plus our 9th round pick. Just to move up. Stupid, Clignan is not a sure fire all star.
