Big Game Hunting is hard Utah Jazz will likely pick will come from one of 4 players

big game hunting is really really hard especially when you need lots of pieces next un locked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your Team every day how are you I’m David lock radio voice the Utah Jazz Jazz NBA Insider on this show we are jam-packed on NBA Draft Day Mel Bridges gets traded by the new Brooklyn Nets to the New York Knicks was this a big game hunting chance and the Jazz fell short why and why is it so hard to go big game hunting who’s out there that’s left to grab and what’s the landscape if we’re trying to trade for players or get players three NBA mock drafts are all out there what is going to happen for the Utah Jazz tonight with the 10th pick and what to watch for tonight plus Justin zanic answers my question on which butt statement is more of a problem with an interesting answer that gives you some insight in what to the Jazz might do tonight it’s all coming up on today’s edition of lock on Jazz as I mentioned I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz NBA Insider this is locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz giving you Insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully making it way better to be a jazz fan each and every day thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen we are free and available on all podcasting apps as well as on YouTube thumbs up thank you very much like buttons appreciate it thank you for all you tuning in we’re finally here it is NBA draft night NBA Utah Jazz draft special starts at 6: tonight on Jazz plus get all your jazz people know and trust giving you all the Insight on that tonight all right let’s do this uh by the way shout out to Lacy from the postcast this is her shirt Utah Jazz draft pick Champions so I thought I’d wear it today with it being the draft and us being the draft pick Champions uh with the amount of picks though Brooklyn might have just become that though they cost him a few to do it all right let’s get to the first part the big news last night the New York Knicks acquire Mel Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets the Jazz were rumored in this Houston was rumored in this this makes sense and yet the Knicks got it done with five first round picks the 2025 Milwaukee Bucks pick the Knicks 25 27 29 31 and a pick swap in 28 for a player who’s never been an Allstar for a player who I might argue I like an awful lot he plays every day is really good defensively for a player who I’m not sure classifies as big game hunting for a player who on the ringer top 100 I didn’t look but I guess is about 30 fifth or so um in players in the NBA would be kind of my guess so not like close to all NBA or anything of that nature and yet five first round draft picks for Mel Bridges I like Mel Bridges if there’s any other thought of Mel Bridges it’s that if anything last year showed that as nice a player as he is he’s not a number one option and that’s what the Knicks were able to do and this might be why it’s so awfully hard for the Utah Jazz when you have these pieces and you’re trying to put this together to go big game hunting and the reason why the Jazz maybe miss out here on a big game hunting when Mikel Bridges was ranked 50th on the ringer top 100 players 50th by the way worth noting that de Murray is 51st and five first round draft picks just went to the Knicks for that Atlanta’s got to be like well yeah what what happened uh Trey young is 36 if a player might be available car towns is 32nd on a player that might be available our own Lowry Markin in is 28 for those of you that are in the book of like we should unload this whole thing go all the way scrap Heap to the bottom five first round draft picks is just what was had there um here’s why I think this gets really hard for the Jazz because the Jazz you’re trying to build a roster and a bunch of team players and we’ve got a bunch of assets right we have Cleveland’s picks we Minnesota’s picks we have the Lakers pick but you got to manage those because we’ve got to be able to use those to go get a bunch of pieces to be able to build this thing to become a really good team if you’re the New York Knicks you can put the whole kitten Kaboodle in overpay I mean dramatically five first round draft picks and we can discuss what that actually is for the 50th best player in the NBA because it’s your missing piece it’s your piece that makes you think to yourself oh that’s gonna win us an NBA title that when you put Jaylen Brunson with Mikel Bridges OG anobi Josh Hart D dentendo an Julius Randall if he’s healthy if that’s what you’re if you’re holding on to that Mitchell Robinson Isaiah harinstein that you that now you are the second best team in the Eastern Conference and you can combat the new the against the Boston Celtics and so that extra draft pick that extra two draft picks to throw into the package to get the deal done if you’re the Knicks a lot easier to throw in than then if you’re the Utah Jazz if Utah Jazz you overpay for muel Bridges and you use five first round draft picks to go get Mel Bridges and you’re not there yet first of all that’s even more expensive because those picks are probably worth more than the Knicks and number two you need some of those picks in a later package to go get the next guy right you need a top 10 a top 20 a top 50 to win if we’ve got made the Mel Bridges deal we got two top 50s maybe Lowry becomes a top 20 but he’s not there yet and so how many pieces can you really give up and so what gets really difficult if you’re the Utah Jazz to go big game hunting is when there’s these teams that believe they’re one piece away well then there the the value of Mel Bridges to the New York Knicks is a lot higher than the value of Mel Bridges to the Utah Jazz the next player that’s going to be available it’s probably going to be the Utah Jazz against Houston Rockets and again we might be in the same circumstance where the next piece to the Houston Rockets is way more valuable than the next piece to the Utah Jazz and it makes it really really hard to be able to make these final deals and get these players and get the big game hunting I I don’t know that I think I mean big game hunting Mel Bridges is a really nice NBA player really nice but I don’t know that even I would I would call him moderate game hunting I mean he’s good but he’s not he’s not number one option I don’t know if he’s a number two option on a roster but he doesn’t need to be for the Knicks and for us he probably did so what’s left is gets interesting Brooklyn is now in as as we begin to watch this all funnel out Brooklyn now is into rebuild mode which if you’re a Cooper flag fan and you’re wanting other teams to not be in rebuild mode that’s not great for the Jazz if you think we’re bottoming out and trying to get Cooper flag then there’s a there’s another team that’s doing it I don’t know where you know of the teams that were bad last year Detroit hasn’t done anything it’s going to make you think they’re any better Washington’s still going to be in this game Charlotte’s still going to probably be in this game so there’s four teams right now in the Eastern Conference already Portland and Utah seem to be the two teams in the Western Conference there’s six there’s a lot of picks available next year but the other thing that gets interesting is who has Capital to go get players so Houston still has a lot of capital available to go get players and evidently there’s rumors that they want Durant there’s some interesting Durant’s gonna be an interesting name here because Durant has some value to some teams and Phoenix doesn’t have a lot of options and maybe their move is to move to rant but the one thing that is happening to the Jazz Advantage here is as more and more teams put all of their Assets in like the Knicks just did there’s less and less teams that have assets to go get players but big game honey is heart and we saw that last night because I’m gonna guess I don’t know but I’m gonna guess the Jazz were in on that they could do the same thing as The Bu on bogdanovich contract to make it happen and I’m going to guess they were in on three with three picks or so and then the Knicks went to five now value of picks we could have a debate the Bucks 2025 pick is probably going to be a middle of the- pack first round pick and we did that whole you know that’s a half a Time rotation player we did this earlier this year where we did all the the pre-draft analysis and the pre-draft breakdown of what a various pick is worth the pick for the the Knicks 25 27 29 and 31 not sure those are I’m not really sure that those are that valuable picks I’m I I’m I’m more and more a Believer particularly when you are of the of a a team that’s close that unloading your picks is a smart play I think it was a smart play by Minnesota it might have just been a really smart bike play by Cleveland because guess who does not have room for Donovan Mitchell now the New York Knicks maybe Donovan Mitchell is gonna sign that extension if the Market’s not there and then for Cleveland it was well worth it it’s an interesting landscape all right three mock drafts to see what happens for the Jazz as the NBA drafted tonight coming up next on lock on Jazz today’s edition of lock on jazz is brought to you by my friends over at intercap lending and that thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day I’d suggest a little lockon Nets and a little lockon Nicks though lockon NBA had a nice bonus episode last night of both of them together so make sure you do that all right let’s look at mock drafts I just put on the bottom of the YouTube screen Kevin pelton’s numbers of the guys he likes let’s look where the mock drafts are let’s run through the three biggies the three biggies are ESPN I also have the locked on mock draft for you so we have four mock drafts to take a look at today on for uh locked on all right let’s start with the locked on mock draft and then we’ll look at ESPN the athletic and the ringer though they haven’t updated this Atlanta stunned everyone took Alex SAR first which is not out of the real possibil but SAR has not worked out for them Donovan kingan went two to the Wizards at that point Reed Shepard went three to Houston which put rashash rashash at four for San Antonio bouas five to Detroit Castle goes to six now there’s a lot of rumors of the Jazz trying to trade up to get Stephen Castle he’s high on the draft board there’s no question number seven Cody Williams to Portland it’s feeling less and less like Cody Williams gets to us Dalton connected eight TJ Salon went nine and then I had the choice at 10 of topic Carter or Holland and I went with Holland I went with positional size at 29 the draft went funky we failed I failed as a GM Rob Dillingham slipped to 21 Ryan Dunn slipped to 24 Jared McCain slipped to 25 Baylor shyman went at 26 and we didn’t trade up to get any of them so you should fire me as the GM and we took Jaylen Tyson with the 29th pick okay here’s the NBA ESPN mock draft Rush goes one SAR goes two that story is just crazy Alex SAR for whatever reason will not work out with the Atlanta Hawks Reed Shepard goes three uh Stephen Castle goes four probably out of the reach you’re going to get him so this is probably the first obviously if something different than Rish SAR or Shephard happens in the first three it’s notable when you’re watching tonight Castle San Antonio at four is probably the first one to watch if Castle gets by four will the Jazz go up to try to get castle that’s the first big moment to watch in this draft bouas goes five Dalton connects six to Charlotte I think you know can all of our feelings my feeling on these 23 year olds they they they make me super nervous I’ve said this a lot um you know I I just I look at Dalton connect who is a really nice player plays with the ball in his hands he’s big he’s strong he does a lot of things I mean he really his his season was was absolutely fabulous this year he graduated from high school in 2019 in 2019 was his graduating class of high school which means that the Freshman this year who who went in in the Freshman this year in 2019 if you back it up if they’re a freshman in 23 they were a senior in 22 they were ju Junior and 21 they were a sophomore they were they were the the freshman in high school when they were when he was a senior The Freshman was in seventh or eighth grade seventh or eighth grade eighth grade Bry so when you look at Baylor shyan and and there’s a lot of them in his draft it’s we just have never had 23 year olds in this draft Baylor shyan graduated from high school in June of 2019 2019 June of 2019 so did dton connect so did kic so did D Silva I think like these guys kic actually might be not quite as old kic I don’t think kic graduates in 2020 okay but it’s still like should make you a little nervous all right back to the mock so connect goes six klling in goes seven to Portland should be a big win for Portland if kingan goes earlier does Ed go seven to Portland as one to watch because then that opens up something that the Jazz don’t want him Salon goes eight to San Antonio Cody Williams goes nine to Memphis it just doesn’t look like Cody Williams can get to 10 and then ESPN now has Rob Dillingham the 19-year-old diminutive Guard from Kentucky who can really shoot it and score Jonathan giovon on with Nate Duncan thinks he’ll score 20 points a game in the NBA Jazz went and visit him last week in Los Angeles Jazz also had topich in this week for in inperson meetings but that’s the decision at the according to ESPN the decision would be a Dillingham Carter topich Hollin decision those are the next four picks Devin Carter to me if I had to put my money down right now on who the Jazz are drafting I’m taking Devin Carter but he’s 22 so just make sure you’re right all right the 29 pick in the ESPN mock draft the Jazz get Tyler KCK the point guard Adam Marquette 23 years old it’s another one of these older Jaylen Tyson who’s 21 goes 30 he’s a pretty interesting player and the Jazz get the kid out of Germany with the 32nd pick tomorrow um there’s an interesting player who I don’t think shyman goes 27 Isaiah Coler goes 26 I do wonder if he starts to fade whether you got to go get him [Music] and I do think there’s an interesting player here in the the other kid out of Marquette I is I’m getting word is an interesting player um and that’s their big their big guy um but I do not see he’s down as low as 49 in the ESPN mock draft not from what I’m hearing okay let’s go to the Athletics mock draft the ringers is not up to date so I’m a little reluctant they have rash going number one SAR going two Shephard going three that seems to be the consensus so if something as you’re watching tonight hopefully on Jazz plus one of if if one of those players does not go three it’s in disarray it’s a super flat draft It Could Happen by the way everything I’m hearing is by the time you get to the sixth pick of this draft it’s a normal draft it’s just the top six isn’t great Castle goes four kingan they have a trade with Detroit Detroit trading the number five pick to Memphis for Donovan clean okay then Charlotte connect again might match to who they are with lamelo ball and Brandon Miller I’m not sure I buy the older guys is ready to contribute it happened a little bit last year M Marcus Sasser was ready to contribute Cody Williams then going seven to Portland so just something crazy is GNA have to happen for Cody Williams to drop if the Jazz like Cody Williams as much as I kind of like Cody Williams um they they’re going to probably have to go up to go get him going up to go get him means you’re probably costing yourself a future first which gets interesting in this because none of these guys are so certain and so good that I think you’re you’re certain that Cody Williams at seven is that much better than I mean frankly John Hollinger has Ron Holland as the number one player on his entire draft B and he’s going to go 14 uh bouas eight to San Antonio there is a chance he could slip a little bit he’s been talked about around five but in this scenario there’s a trade that happens and suddenly connect goes six and then Portland has and so you could suddenly see bouas he’s one who I feel like his his existence is a little Fragile on where it could H where things could happen they have Saloon going nine and then the Jazz drafting nicoa toage topage has been in the US he’s visited a bunch of teams there’s a nice little short article about him in the athletic today and that has the Jazz with topic again the decision interestingly Rob Dillingham on the board so there’s a name I don’t think we all thought was going to be on the board that still it now suddenly seems like it’s going to ve very much be in play leave to lean very very uh excited about him throughout the last week you’ve heard it so topic again the decision here topic Carter Dillingham Holland that’s pretty consistent one other wild card name to throw in there is bub Carrington 6’4 guard out of Pittsburgh he’s the young one of the youngest players in the first round he’s a pretty good pull-up shooter he averaged 14 points he had five rebounds he shot shot it okay not great but he’s pretty interesting that would be one other name I’d throw in there and then the other wild card is whether or not the Jazz would go drafted Zack Edy or something like that I just don’t think we we have an answer on that but that if you look at those two mock we’re into kind of the same decision-making play Ron Holland and if by the way Friday’s show with Tony Jones really good about that uh Lea to lean yesterday was really good Monday we went ran through a breakdown on all the players from are experts ringer mock draft again not updated since the 17th so a little questionable same top three bouas four Cody Williams five I mean we just doesn’t feel like Cody Williams can get to us but that gets Castle dropping to six can the Jazz jump up and they believe in C Castle might be the one player you believe in enough that you’re willing to give up a future first round pick for defensive minded tough if he can he can play with keante you’ve got your two big guards he plays defensively Keon’s a little more offensively and if he can figure out how to shoot it’ be great his shooting numbers are tough though kinging at seven they have Carter at eight Holland at nine connect going 10 very different ringer the consensus from nba.com which is the mock draft is the best mocks around the web they don’t actually say which one but they have at least it seems as they have about 10 of them here is the top three we’ve talked about castle four klling in five boula 6 Cody Williams 7 connect 8 TJ SLA nine Devin Carter 10 but again the decision Carter topich Holland Dillingham that sure seems to be the decision right now and then at 29 we’ll see Yahoo sports by the way has us taking Devin Carter Bleacher Report has us taking Dalton connect CBS Sports has us taking Cody Williams I don’t think he’ll get there and I took Ron Holland okay Justin zanic asks my question of which butt statement is the biggest problem skill or physical limitations and we have that for you next on lockdown Jazz we do I promise we have it for you next on locked on Jazz today’s edition of locked on jazz is brought to you as well by FanDuel the Sports World slowing down a little bit but fanduel’s kingan is plus 600 Alexander SAR is plus 1,000 the overall 10th pick Kevin Carter plus 450 Rob Dillingham now plus 550 is the second most likely pick for us nicolea topic 550 Ron Holland plus 600 Cody Williams plus 850 those are the lines for the Jazz and the 10th pick Devin Carter plus 450 Rob Dillingham plus 550 nicoa topic plus 550 Ron Holland plus 600 and TJ Salon after that so there you go um bronny James is plus 20,000 by the way if you uh are wondering if we might take him that is at fanduel.com locked on summer bonuses All Summer Long thanks very much for making locked on Jazz your first listen tonight six o’clock Jazz plus specialty programming for you locked on we’ll have stuff all day long search YouTube every time there’s a pick made we’re going to have it follow our socials at locked on podcast network uh then also we will have a uh short analysis almost out immediately on YouTube and on audio for you on every pick so if you really want to follow the draft um you’ll get those kind of things going all right Justin zanic I mean both of them are concerning was uh jump the gun Justin zanic held a media session and at the end of the media session I asked him every player seems to have a butt statement some are physical limitations and some are skill limitations which is more concerning to you and he said both but then he went on to have a very interesting answer I I think more what I’d rather chat about is it’s it’s an annoying thing for me it’s a natural thing for scouting staffs and people in general frankly is you watch something or watch a player and you have an opinion and it’s all about what he cannot do and I can sit there and pick apart 450 NBA players too if you want me to but they are literally the best players in the world playing on championship teams and like so I think it’s really important for coaches and front office um you need to figure out what they can do not only what what you think they can do in the ceiling but like what can they do and then how do you mitigate or help and develop the weaknesses okay if he’s physically you know a problem physically like can we get it better or can we not is it you know mechanics or seeing the game or reading it you know how’s his brain can he do it or not so focusing on what’s possible um but realistic and hey this guy can go do this right now but I just think it’s way too especially with social media I I guess only criticism fits into 140 characters because that’s what you see most the time like this guy can’t do this or that I I don’t think think that’s fair I mean could you imagine like I do media like we pass on 10 like ah nobody can do anything so we’re not going to even pick somebody like no like chances are the 10th pick is going to be an NBA player at least for a little while and hopefully for a long time so our job is to find out how how can we make that happen it’s very easy to just eliminate guys but you have to pick somebody so when I you know I guys I think I said two or three months ago when I said I don’t think there’s ever such a thing as a bad draft like there’s always good players they just you have to project more in this one so we’ll try to do our best job that we can all right so let’s quickly do that before we wrap this up of the players we’ve talked about today Devin Carter what can Devin Carter do he’s got a great physical tools he’s strong he’s physical he’s willing to make contact he understands the game very very well he plays under control and with has athleticism he averaged 20 points and nine rebounds a game last year as a 6-2 guard with four assists he he can step in and play he’s probably the securest pick of all because he’s got the ability he’s he understands the game you can see him when he SN makes a pick and roll you can see when he moves on the floor you can see him when he comes down and pin down he understands the game he shot it at a rate that’s much higher than he ever had before and that will be the big question mark on on where that goes long term but what can he do to Justin’s anx Point Devin Carter is physical he’s strong enough he’s athletic enough he can play right now and he plays hard that’s a skill Rob Dillingham the second most likely FanDuel player to make it onto our to the Utah Jazz what can he do right now he can score it when we talked about number one skill you could probably have in this draft and leaf and I talked about Ryan Dunn’s defensive skills Rob Dillingham putting it in the basket is probably one of the number one skills some have compared his scoring ability to a Tyrese Maxi Leaf T’s gone to a Lou Williams he’s a bonafide his shake his wiggle Elite crossover Elite crossover absolutely there Elite top five recruit or five star recruit coming into Kentucky and Kentucky guards have been great Ron Holland what can he do he’s physically made for the NBA he was the number two high school player in the country he’s athletic he can finish at The Rim he can play strong he’s 6’8 206 pounds he could switch defensively he can dig in and physically will not be outmanned on day one in the NBA and finally Nia toic what can he do it’s 66 he can get downhill he can get on the rim he can he sees the floor he’s an elite pick and role player he’s played against adults he played as a youngster in for red star one of the better European teams in the highest level of basketball and held his own before the injury we didn’t get as much time as we would have liked but he got his got got himself a bunch of uh time to be able to see him there so that’s what those four guys can do and those are the four guys we’re likely deciding between tonight we’ll talk to you at six o’clock on Jazz plus that is locked on Jazz today we’ll send you over to the first ever 247 national sports streaming Channel locked on sports today if you’re on audio you can also check out the big six in 60 it’s the new show check out the big six in 60 the six biggest stories of the day

Danny Ainge said the Utah Jazz want to go big game hunting. Big Game Hunting is hard when you have to add multiple pieces and the New York Knicks just stole a piece in Mikal Bridges by going all in for the top 50 player in the NBA. David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider explains these moves are harder for the Jazz when they have multiple pieces to deal with.

The NBA Draft is tonight and from the looks of 3 mock drafts the Utah Jazz choice is going to come down to Devin Carter, Rod Dillingham, Nikola Topic or Ron Holland.

Justin Zanik explains the scouting process and how you have to look for what the player can do.

  1. If the Nets can get that for Bridges it’s time to trade Lauri. Let’s go full tank through the 2026 draft and get our Superstars.

  2. I have to laugh (not mockingly), I know size can be somewhat arbitrary in Basketball, but in the first half of the pod, Lock said Carter was 6'3" and Holland is 6'6", but in the wrap up he said Carter was 6'2" and Holland is 6'8". I have never seen or heard Holland was 6'8" in any pods or publications.

  3. Probably time to trade Lauri, which sucks because i love his game, but he's too good for us to bottom out. If we can get something close to what Brooklyn got for Bridges, then it's worth looking at.
