Alex Sarr Player Review – Detroit Pistons NBA Draft

this your boy Brandon AKA Detroit koola your credential Detroit Pistons a beat reporter and riter uh here for the network and we got to get into this NBA draft it’s something called the NBA draft that’s going down tonight I know coverage begins at 7:30 we’re going to kick things off around 7:15 here so right after the woodw heavyweights y better be tapped in with them definitely make sure you guys tap back in in with us at 7:15 for our offseason kickoff for the Detroit Pistons starting with the NBA draft and will be discussing kind of everything the front office changes uh the road ahead and and and on the Spot while the draft is going on talk about how these moves could affect things going forward and then hopefully I got time to zoom over to the uh press conference tonight after the first round but we’ve made some updates to the big board I did send that to the uh slack I got you yeah so look we got this kind of second version I’ve been kind of mulling some things over going back and looking at some film and comparing things and Cody Williams has made a big big jump in this uh in this final kind of Draft Day edition of uh my big boy my top te big boy yeah look we got Zachary Alexander s obviously is number one despite the news um I do believe he’s the the best Prospect in his draft but the news is he declined his workout with the Atlanta Hawks um doesn’t necessarily want to go there the owner of the Hawks actually spoke on it as well saying we had him scheduled he declined his visit so it’s looking like he might go to in that actually Zachary reash is trending to go number one overall to the Atlanta Hawks and then there could be so many trades that go down tonight that this draft could be absolute Mayhem but number three I’ve did a swap here modest bazis is now number three and I have Reed Shepard at number four Dalton connect at number five Donovan kingan he stays at number six for me right now uh but Cody Williams he climbs the charge for me at number seven there’s a lot that he has to improve on he has to get that strength and that weight up like we talked about yesterday but just kind of looking at that potential if you have an opportunity to kind of take a a a try on a guy like that that’s not a guy that I wouldn’t uh I wouldn’t mind the the Pistons taking a a Chance on So I like what he brings 71 wingspan 67 player might still have some room to grow as well uh uh just in terms of height especially with this game I I trust what the Pistons can do in terms of when his volume increases but as we kind of go through this thing we got Stephen castle at 8 uh Rob Dillingham at 9 and Ron Holland at 10 I like what he brings volume wise I would like to see better efficiency and it’s kind of what he did at the G league night I I’m wondering at the g-league level with the ignite I’m wondering if that’s kind of what his ceiling is and when you talk about translating that over to the NBA then obviously some of those numbers are going to take a hit too but let’s get into Alexander SAR the number one prospect on my top 10 big board for this NBA draft year Alexander SAR uh uh seven-footer has a little bit of handle but he’s not necessarily as kind of versatile offensive player that you would say maybe Zachary race and mes balis are um Alexander SAR is more one of those guys who when you talk about a defensive anchor as a 7 footer 224 pounder he’s everywhere everywhere on the court Zach he can defend out on the perimeter he can defend in the paint he can defend in the mid-range he can defend in the pick and roll he has really really Good Foot discipline he has good discipline to not really bite for too many of the hesitations or pump fakes Alexander SAR he is an anchor to a defense I I I want to believe that his ceiling could be the type of effect that we’ve seen Rudy gobear have in several different situations now in this league Alexander SAR has that type of POS potential and that’s why in large Parts across the board he’s viewed as the top uh for a long time the top overall candidate or Prospect in this NBA draft but is he better offensively than a Rudy go that’s the that’s what you know what with Rim finishing and his uh kind of potential you see the form he’s not necessarily a floor spacer yet but you see the form the technique is there and maybe with NBA development he can be a floor spacer but in terms of like his offensive field around the rim his uh ability to finish uh really a lot of kind of pick and rolls with dunks uh present himself as a l option his ability to get out into transition as well uh and lead the break too that that’s something that really impressed me as well his ability to kind of grab the the rebound push the break and make the right plays as well as this man um his ability to kind of make drop passes dribble handoffs plays from the paint yeah uh for his teammates even out to not just to Cutters but also to people out there in the perimeter he does have an offensive game in terms of being that kind of potent score no he’s going to he’s gonna have some work to do in that area but when you’re playing with a guy like K Cunningham when you’re playing with a guard like Jay ivy who did find jayen during a lot uh his type of game I do believe meshes obviously the Pistons they it’s going to be extreme luck if they have an opportunity or they go up and they get them if they want them for them to have an opportunity to have Alexander SAR but um in 27 games he have 17.3 minutes per game 9.4 points 0.9 assists 4.3 rebounds just so you can kind of have some of the context with his stats as well so this is a guy that you’re hoping uh can step him right away from a defensive standpoint and have an impact and then offensively you’re hoping that he’s a guy that doesn’t necessarily detract from what your team is trying to do um and can be really an elite uh guy at pick and rolls finishing at the rim cutting and playmaking especially out of the post area so Alexander SAR number one hey uh is Rod on nope not yet all right well so so then I I guess I will get your [ __ ] off no no no I’m not it’s not getting my [ __ ] off I just I just if Rod was on we would discuss it with Rod because I think Kool-Aid broke it down in a way that you don’t necessarily need me but you’re going to get me it’s all well hey talk about it bro no Alex SAR he’s obviously got the measurables he’s got the height he’s got the wingspan he’s got the athleticism I think he’s going to come in probably day one and be a damn good Defender it’s just with me personally and for the record a part of it is also that if he falls to five that would probably be getting an number one overall pick style athlete at five without necessarily the skills my thing with Alexander SAR is that his offensive game I still see as a little bit raw and a little undeveloped that three-point shot percentage is not good yeah and to me taking de and I get Alex SAR is a different level than like assar Thompson and Killian Hayes but I worry a little bit about taking another defense first player who showed a ton of evidence it when it comes to uh when it comes to Killian in the international league and in like Euro Cup and when it comes to uh overtime Elite with assar that they couldn’t shoot and you saw with Killian Hayes we know for a fact that he can’t shoot we know with assar Thompson his rookie year his shooting percentage in from the three was in the teens that’s what I worry about I love his potential upside I think he has an upside that’s higher than like a reed Shepard for example or aulton connect but me personally My Philosophy is more Shooters but in terms of athletic ability you can’t in size you can’t deny alexar and and for me dton connect continues to be that pig I continue to sit there and and mover Reed Shepard D connect Cody Williams what do I like the best I believe that D connect is the best of all worlds he’s not necessarily the tallest of that group he doesn’t necessarily have you know the the best measurables of that group but in terms of being 6 foot6 in terms of uh having kind of that defensive Instinct but probably needs a little bit more um uh kind of coaching up uh a little bit more technique to his style uh to be a even more efficient and better Defender I like d conect and you you talk about a guy who already has volume he shot more like almost double the amount of Threes per game than a reed Shepard yeah so I don’t know what Reed Shepard’s percentage is if he shoots actually six and a half threes per game like aulton connect was doing and with Cody Williams I like what the the numbers are but what is he when the volume goes up and is he a type of player that can handle the volume because his three-point percentage was good but it was less than two threes per game and so that’s where dton connect continues to be on this kind of draft day one of those guys 23 already kind of has that man weight has played in several different levels of basketball has worked his way up from from Joo level you know what I mean all the way up to to this position right now to be a lottery pick I like what he brings to T like I said yeser man it just kind of reminds me of uh kind of just like a little bit shorter sadique Bay type of a player a white Sid a white s yeah I don’t a problem with those typ you know like usually these comparisons they like compared a white guy to a white guy black guy like in this case I look at his game and and there are definitely some differences I think he can handle the ball a little bit better but I like dog connect man a lot it’s so funny that you mentioned the white sadique Bay because if you look at sadique Bay at villain Nova and kind of My Philosophy now I wasn’t as plugged in to the draft then because I don’t I I didn’t work for sports media as I am now I would have pounded the table for sadique Bay I would have been doing like I probably would have been waving my shirt around at getting sadique Bay that low in the draft in 20 in 2020 however it just he didn’t have much D pause but you know what I mean and his shot was just inconsistent as hell like you look back at the years when sad B was here there were so many pistons wins where he would score 28 30 32 50 even and make like seven out of 10 threes but he had two many of those games where he’d shoot like one of seven from three it’s just sadique B was kind of my What Might Have Been he’s the one that got away he should have gotten away because you don’t want to pay a guy like that yeah that was that was the reason why he actually got away it was we’ve reported on this for a couple years now is what that contract was going to be I have a bigger issue with the return for sadique Bay who I liked and where dton connect to me is is definitely a lot more intriguing than a sadique bay or even a Luke Canard is that he’s been so much more consistent and better a college three-point shooter than either one of those players in the past 6 and a half threes 40 plus per from behind the arc that that percentage goes up when you start talking about catch and shoot as well as his percentage in the mid-range too like he’s a man I he would immediately help this team and that’s what they need yeah the thing with d connect is just is his ceiling his ceiling is probably the one that’s capped so if you’re taking him that high at five you’re probably passing on a player that has a higher ceiling but might not be able to contribute in the same ways right away especially with shooting I mean that’s the that’s that’s kind of the story of Cody Williams versus dton Cadet Cody Williams has a much higher ceiling but and he did shoot very well from three and he’s more athletic and you know got the size and I think he’s going to be a better Defender and and everything but Cody Williams shot less than two threes a game and D connect not and I guess you can say besides Zack Edy but I’m actually going to include Zack Edy in this dton connect was arguably the best offensive player in the country last year having over 20 points per game a 39% three-point percentage on uh six attempts per game leading Tennessee being one of the best offensive players in Tennessee History crazy defens is thrown at too yes and and like we said got more athleticism when we than we think he plays better defense than you might think Dalton connect I would not be mad at all if he was the tumber five overall preaching I’m say preaching you got something to say before we get ride on no go ahead hey so we’ll take a quick break and we’ll get back to Hornet Muse uh got to credit them for those highlights we were showing Hornet Muse on X shout out thank you thank you definitely brother making sure to uh keep business business but uh you know what I appreciate you guys for for uh kicking off this morning with the wake up will recruit as you do every day Monday
