Clearly the best run of front office management in franchise history (along with the trades in 2018), and really set up the team for the championship run.

One of the best stretches of all time in terms of consistently hitting on late picks and getting more value than expected. Plus they signed FVV as an undrafted free agent.

And Delon was one of the pieces in the Gasol trade, Jakob helped get us Kawhi. Those drafts built the championship season.

    they didnt draft Norm.

Milwaukee drafted him, and then the Raptors traded Grievis Vazquez for him and 2017 1st (turned into OG).

    edit:
    – in 2014 they totally whiffed on their picks, and 2013 they didnt have any picks
    – the 2009-2012 run of draft picks was really nice too.

i am confident we are in middle of another run like this. FO knows the importance of drafting well. they did it before championship they will do it again. scottie, coloko, gradey all amazing picks and hopefully we continue the streak today.

With good management, we’re never too far away.

Blue Jays are toast and the Leafs probably are, too.

Masai and Co deserve a lot of credit here but I think the biggest credit goes to Demar and Kyle.

They held it down and were winning while we had a young core developing. It’s hard to do at the same time. You can also argue that those guys became elite because they had playoff experience right from the jump.

  8. I think a big part of the above is that the FO identified a marginal advantage with their scouting and development (i.e. scouting players who started basketball late, + wingspan players who may not know how to shoot yet, Raptors 905). The problem is that this is a copycat league, so now every FO tries to do the same thing.

It’s why it’s important to continue to innovate, even at the FO level. It’s why I’m a fairly big believer in Darkoball — it’s incredible to see the jumps in offensive efficiency just by changing the way they play the game. These guys still suck at hitting the shots, but the amount of open looks being generated is awesome. My hope is that the system makes players look _really_ good, and then we can trade them for greater value when we’re ready to compete.

It’s the only way to build a championship team today. Get a couple high picks right, and then you HAVE to nail a couple of late ones once you improve. Otherwise you’re going to stall out.

Anyone who rips the Raptors drafts the past few years and possibly this year based on how guys end up, draft picks are called lottery tickets for a reason.

Maybe your ticket wins the jackpot, maybe it’s a secondary jackpot, maybe it’s a few hundred bucks, maybe a free ticket, or it’s a bust.

If you win a good sized prize a few times, don’t get mad at the few times after where your ticket is a dud or just a $5 return.
