for the second year in a row a Frenchman goes number one overall 6’9 Zachary rishe is an athletic wing with good size and a well-rounded game who moves like a guard he said number one strength is my shooting then my defensive ability after that and lastly my ability to do what is asked to me using my versatility I can rebound handle the ball if needed finish Above the Rim pass the ball whatever you ask me to do I will do it and I’ll do it well and he is going to be doing it for the Atlanta Hawks back here in studio with Adam finlin Gary Parish Avery John the grade for the Atlanta Hawks taking Reet is what we’re going B it’s it’s solid it’s unspectacular and that’s what you expect in this draft re as we said three and D prototype you’re hoping for more in this draft but you can only pick from among the available players the reason it’s a b is because I think the best course of action for Atlanta would have been to trade down and try and turn one asset into multiple assets I think they might have tried to do that but from what we were hearing the last 24 to 48 hours their asking price was just too high for anybody to bite and this is and Adam’s got it exactly right you know you can only pick from the players available this isn’t last year when you had a generational Talent available there will be future Allstars come out of this draft somewhere they always do it’s just hard to identify exactly who it’s going to be in this one so Rish aay makes sense it’s not who I would have taken he doesn’t look like a typical number one pick he doesn’t have that uh big burst off the dribble that you want uh from a wing but he is a wing with good positional size who can knock down shots really shot it at a high level late in this uh season in France so I understand why they did what they did here but I do not believe this is going to be the best player from this draft that’s typically what you want to get with the number one overall pick Avery this is a gamble right if you’re the Atlanta Hawks taking a a guy that you don’t necessarily know a whole lot about it you’ve done your due diligence of course you’ve scouted but this is certainly a risk for Atlanta well yeah we talked about a couple of the guys that could have been taken at one could have been a risk I would have went a different wave with Donovan kingan because I I love him I think he would be a better fit especially to protect Trey Young from a defensive standpoint he’s one of the lower rated defensive guards in the league uh but maybe Ray can help in that area obviously DeAndre Hunter is a guy that they’ve invested money in but more than this draft pick the Atlanta Hawks they have to figure out how they move forward exactly what what are they going to do what are you going to do uh you got you have an in up back court that doesn’t really fit together I mean dejon Murray I could have told him that this was never going to work so I think they have bigger problems and I believe right now that the Atlanta Hawks coaching staff they’re not thrilled with this pick all right let’s welcome in Matt norlander Matt you’ve spoken to the Hawks what are they saying about Zachary ret as they make him the number one overall pick well this process was obviously on an amplified timeline because the Hawks didn’t anticipate on getting the number one pick when they got in the lottery they had members at at the highest part of their organization fly over to France to see Rees aay and ultimately they wound up picking him because Landry Fields who’s only in his second year as a GM he was going to lean toward the safer pick they are in love with his footwork they’re in love with his three-point specialty potential and they love the idea that K can truly be a long rangey stretch four kind of guy who can grow into a better than 40% three-point shooter he seemed like the safest one but I will tell you this the Atlanta Hawks viewed Reed Shepard as a quote potential momes type of player and he was number two on their board and ultim they went with the guy that had better size but it’ll be interesting to see where Reed Shepard goes and what kind of career he has because he was the player that finished second in this race to the Hawks to Reay and we might well see down the road that it could be well a potential mistake because they see they put the Shephard Mahomes comp in this regard what if Reed Shepard turns into one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA what if he’s a guy who can give you 22 24 26 points per game if that’s the case you would have automatically taking them we don’t have the answer to that R say narrowly beats out Shephard to go to Atlanta e
