The Devin Carter Pick for the Sacramento Kings is Quickly Growing on Me | Locked On Kings

The Devin Carter Pick for the Sacramento Kings is Quickly Growing on Me | Locked On Kings

at least the Sacramento Kings are consistent with the 13th pick in the 2024 NBA draft the Kings selected yet another guard Devin Carter out of Providence and while my initial reaction was definitely more negative than positive like a lot of you I’ll explain to you why this pick is quickly growing on me for Sacramento it’s all right here for you on locked on Kings you are locked on Kings your daily ramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome to Lockton Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all offseason long today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as play offs have winded down they’re over now we’re in the off seon and sports just aren’t sporting right now the way that we necessarily want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something new for everyone every day all summer long you can find out more on fanduel.com lockon and get started there my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for ABC 10 news and first off sorry audio listeners you won’t won’t be able to see this but check this out man I don’t know how well you can see behind me here YouTube Watchers but I’m in a dark and empty Golden One center right now yeah behind me is I’m on the main Concourse behind me is where the court and all the seats and everything are again you probably can’t see it to well because of the lighting on the camera but this is Eerie it’s cool it’s exciting and it just screams off seon right now connected to the golden one Center itself as the king’s practice facility and the front offices where the Kings decide to once again draft another guard with the 13th overall pick Devin Carter was a selection out of Providence now first and foremost let’s get into what the kings are getting in Carter before we talk about the initial reactions to the pick and the kings taking another guard and I’ll specifically share with you why this pick is very quickly growing on me for the Sacramento Kings also you’re going to hear from both Kings general manager Monty McNair and Devin Carter later on in this podcast so so much good stuff who is Devin Carter well he’s a 6’2 195b guard out of Providence was one of the Friars so now the Kings have a frier and a monk on their roster however even though he’s 6’2 he has a 6’8 nearly 6 foot n wingspan so he’s got a very long Wings span for a guard with which helps him on the defensive end he’s also 22 years old King’s general manager Monty McNair has a type older guards from tyes halberton to Davon Mitchell now to Devin Carter he loves himself some older guards and he’s stuck with it who is Devon Carter as a basketball player well he is a relentless on ball Defender he is the guy that will attack you while you have the basketball in your hands he takes defensive uh he takes a lot of pride in his defense he takes it very seriously he also seems to take it personally if you score on him or even get by him he’s the kind of guy on the defensive end that will take more joy out of locking you down than scoring on you on the other end of the floor however he does have some offense to his game he averaged 19.7 points 8.7 rebounds 3.6 assists last season which was his junior year uh in college on 47% shooting from the field 37% from three-point range and 74% from the free throw line he shot at 37% from three on 6.8 attempts per game so a high volume of three-point shots 37% is a really solid percentage however it was kind of a breakout three-point season for Carter because he shot 26% his rookie his freshman season and 29% his sophomore season so a big jump in one year how much will that translate to the NBA is he more true to the high 20s low 30s or is he that mid to high 30s three-point shooter that’s a massive difference at the NBA level but offensively if he can be shooting percentage wise not necessarily points per game wise but shooting percentage wise if he can be what he was last season with Providence he’ll fit in well and space the floor well playing with dearon Fox and with Malik Monk and what other combination of guards that Mike Brown wants to throw out there a projected NBA role for Devin Carter impossible really to say but a defensive first guard that has an ability to score ability to space the floor talking talking almost like a three and D guard in a lot of ways but he’s he’s definitely probably more of a two than he is a one so more of a shooting guard than he is a point guard although he’s kind of unders siiz for the shooting guard position but his wingspan makes up for that so let’s talk about initial reaction to this because I know some of you are upset by this pick and if you go on my social media my Twitter account Matt George sack you’ll see I posted the graphic with Carter’s picture on it and the 13th overall pick and I said like I don’t get it I want to get it but I don’t get it and in some ways I I still don’t how in the world in an offseason where we’re talking so much about the Kings needing to address their wing depth how in the world can you go out and draft another guard right now as the roster stands of course we’re still very early in the offseason but as the r stands y’all there are eight guards on this roster Fox monk Ellis Mitchell herder Duarte Jones and now Carter eight guards on this roster the tallest one of them is Kevin herder who is 6’7 I’ve been saying the Kings need more 68 69 610 guys for defensive purposes on the wing and if Kevin herder is your tallest of the eight guards he’s also probably the weakest Defender out of that group you still got yourself a problem that you need to address so here’s an opportunity with the 13th overall pick to address that by drafting a wing by drafting a forward connect was available there were play Tristan D Silva was available and the Kings go another guard route I debate all the time we debate every year best player available versus fit I tend to Trend more towards fit or I kind of do a combination of the two which is kind of cheating but I think I prioritize fit more but the best player available that fits your team need if that makes sense Monty is very much a best player available approach which you’re going to hear a little bit later on in the podcast but I saw the Kings take another guard and I was just shaking my head like they really did it again they really did it again and I was hoping for to be completely honest with you I I was hoping for and thinking that we were going to get a buzzer beater trade for Sacramento it would have made sense for the Kings to wait until they saw who was on the board at 13 and then ultimately made the decision to move the pick maybe there was a team out there that wanted Carter or wanted connect or wanted somebody and was willing to to move up to get him so we’ve heard rumors still even though the the the uh the Washington Wizards for some reason traded Denny AA and in a crazy trade to move into 14 we heard rumors that Kyle kozmo was still on the table the possibility of trading with the Brooklyn Nets for Dorian Smith or Cam Johnson or maybe both of them right the the Kings had options to potentially trade that pick they ultimately didn’t do it with I which I’ve been consistent with since the draft lottery even before that I’ve said I want the Kings to shop and trade this pick if we find out that the Kings had the possibility like had a deal in front of them to go out and get ausma and decided not to do that and to go the car route instead if that ever came out I would probably be pretty unhappy to hear that news but we don’t know if that’s the case or not but then I started thinking about it more and this pick is really really growing on me very very quickly so the first question I want to ask those of you who are upset right what are you upset about are you upset about the position or are you upset about the player because those are two very different things if you’re upset about the position like I was and and still am to some extent if you’re upset about the king’s once again going out and getting another guard and not as of now taking the opportunity to address the wing depth issue if that’s how you feel I understand that but Devin Carter in so many ways addresses what the Kings need more of he’s a good fit he brings things that Sacramento needs and I’ll get into that in just a little bit or just a second here so if if we’re judging the pick based off the position I understand that but understand that even though you have a bunch of guards doesn’t mean that Carter can’t come in here and become one of the best of those guards pretty quickly he has the potential and the upside to do that as a 22-year-old rookie he does have that immediate impact potential which the Kings should be looking for look I was super super into the idea of the Kings going out and getting Alex kuso now I trust Alex Caruso a whole hell of a lot than more than I trust Devin Carter because I’ve seen Caruso do it at the NBA level before and do it consistently so it’s not a direct comparison but if I was okay with the idea of the Kings getting another guard in Alex Caruso and trading for him to get him here then part of me should be okay and at least open to the idea of Devin Carter and how he could be what Alex kuso has been throughout his career how he can be that for the Sacramento Kings granted kuso a little bit taller than uh Devin Carter is but I’ve also been preaching all offseason long y’all I’ve been saying hey this offseason is about getting your team and your roster on the same page with Mike Brown’s system Dalton excuse me Devin Carter screams Mike Brown guy the more I think about it the more I watch his tape talk about his game he screams Mike Brown to the point where it would not surprise me if if Mike Brown was involved in this process at all I have a good feeling that Mike Brown was probably telling the front office he my stamp of of approval if you go out and get that guy I’m going to be a very happy camper a dog on the defensive end who will fight like hell who is long enough to guard multiple positions who can also space the floor and put up threes on the offensive end that’s exactly what the Kings have been looking for and need more of on top of that for his size this dude is a ridiculous rebounder averaged almost nine rebounds a game in college that’s absurd for a 6’2 guard because he has that willing that aggressiveness it’s it’s very Josh Hart likee right Josh Hart one of the best rebounders in the league he’s a two guard maybe more of a two3 certainly taller than uh Devin Carter is but you’re going to hear in a second Monty McNair talk about how and why he thinks Devin Carter’s rebounding is going to translate to the NBA and what Carter’s rebounding says about him as a player and how he will be successful at the NBA level Carter brings so much to the table that the Kings can use more of and that’s why I think they’re very excited about having him here for the long term but what does Carter’s role look like in the rotation we’ll talk about that very early projection into the rotation and how he can break his way in where he fits with the roster as of right now the Kings still have work to do we’ll address that and get into that plus you’re going to hear from Mony McNair and Devin Carter at the end of this podcast too so stay tuned for that like I said at the top of the show today’s episode of the lockon Kings podcast is brought to you by eBay only available to us customers we still have months in between tonight and the start of training camp and over that time the Kings have roster finalization they still need to make moves they for sure still need to make we’ll also get the context of the California classic and summer league which Deon Carter is expected to play in as a rookie so what I’m talking about right now might change by the time we actually get to training camp itself but very early on projecting how Devin Carter can fit and work with this roster today going into training camp we have to expect that he is going to behind be behind both Davon Mitchell and Keon Ellis I leave out dearon Fox and Malik monk because that’s kind of a duh right but if there is some if there are similar players on this roster Carter fits in with kind of that Keon Ellis Davon Mitchell Group where kind of the backup guards I know Keon was a starter and maybe maybe Keon holds on to that starting spot maybe he doesn’t but the these defensive minded defensive first guards who make a big impact on that end that can also hopefully fit in consistently on the offensive end of the floor he’s in that group however I don’t think it’s absurd at all to go into the training camp and expect Carter to have a chance at earning a day one consistent rotational spot now there are some people that believe that Carter the one of the reasons why the Kings drafted Carter is because not only do they see his potential to help them win right away they see his potential to to grow into their everyday starting two guard that they still haven’t really found some people believe that can be Keon Ellis some people think if you had a guy that was just on a two-way contract as your starting shooting guard going forward and you’re trying to win a championship it’s probably not going to be good enough time will still tell on that Keon still young still has a lot uh to show the Sacramento Kings and I think we’re all interested to see how Keon looks now that kind of the hype of last season’s breakout year is over and if he gets an everyday starter roll or everyday big rotational minutes roll what that looks like for a full 82 Game season and hopefully a playoff run again so the jury’s still kind of out on whether or not the Kings have their starting shooting guard of the future some people believe Carter can be that guy Brendan Nunes from sack toown Sports 1140 the Kings plls podcast he is one of those guys he thinks that Carter can be that and I’m going to have Brendan on the lock on Kings podcast here in the very near future to discuss that more in detail of why he could potentially turn into that for the Kings but right away the expectation should be he hopefully a legitimate shot to break the king’s rotation crack the king’s rotation but in order to do that as of right now with the roster the way it is he has to beat out Keon he has to beat out Davon and probably to some extent he has to beat out Kevin herder but here’s the deal the Kings cannot go into training camp with eight freaking guards on their roster not including the ones that they’re going to bring in for training camp invites and opportunities that are probably g-league players and things like that you know what I mean like the Kings can’t roll in a roster with eight guards that all have a decent chance of playing NBA minutes right they can’t do that they got to get rid of like three of them minimum maybe Kevin is one of them maybe Davon is one of them now maybe you’re much more open to trading Davon who’s an expiring deal you might be able to add that to a package with picks and expiring contracts to still go to Washington and try and get Kyle kozma that deal is not necessarily dead it just wasn’t done tonight and tonight was not the last night to do everything Monty considers tonight kind of the of the off seon certainly not the end so the Kings have time the thing is though they have to use that time right there’s been times in the past where we’ve sitting there sat there going there has to be another move right they’re setting themselves up for another move and they don’t make it you can’t not make the move right you have way too many guards on your roster and you still have a big gap in your wing depth that you have to address so the Kings off season far from over they got Mike Brown back fantastic they got Malik monk back fan freaking fastic they got their rookie with their their 13th overall pick fantastic you still have massive holes you need to fill and you have a log Jam upon Log Jam of bodies at the guard position that you need to kind of iron out a little bit or it sounds harsh but kind of cut the dead weight and use that weight to go out and get you the weight in areas that you need right Kings have a lot of work still to do this off seon where dein Carter fits into that we will see I’m excited to see him in the California classic excited to see him in summer league and what he brings on the defensive end what I want to see from him is can he and how does he separate himself as a rookie in the California classic and in training camp differently or at a higher level or to a higher degree than Davon Mitchell did when the Kings drafted him three seasons ago we saw the off night potential we saw the upside on the defensive end and we were excited by it but it wasn’t anything that really I mean I don’t know about you I don’t remember being blown away by anything that Davon Mitchell did In Summer League Beyond oh that looks really good or oh that looks exciting can’t wait for that in the K with the Kings there were certainly elements of that but can Devin Carter show us I have the potential to be a starting two guard in this league and I have a potential to help this Kings team make the playoffs right now in a very difficult Western Conference I want to see a glimpse of that hopefully we get that this summer all right let’s hear from both Devin Carter and Kings general manager Monty McNair we’ll start with Devin I got the opportunity to ask Devon about playing for Mike Brown it seems to me Devin is the exact type of player that Mike Brown system wants more of so I asked Devon what he thinks about playing in Mike Brown system and here’s what he had to say Mike Brown fantastic coach uh you know just I see how he treats his players how the players respond to him you know all the players love him so he’s a players coach and uh you know I just love playing for people who are coaches that care about their players first so just ready to get to work with him uh you know trust everything that he has going on for the organization and uh you know he’s the head of the snake so we follow his lead and uh you know see if we can bring a championship back to Sacramento Deon also talked about his pre-draft workout and meetings that he had here in Sacramento how those meetings went and why that led him to be pretty confident that the kings were going to select him deep down am I gut that’s that’s the team that I felt was going to pick me um you know I felt like I had a very well workout with them uh the uh meetings and everything with the decision makers uh everything was just perfect in my eyes and I think we all clicked you know from the meetings and uh just them seeing me play in person my competitiveness and uh just the person I am I think everything was just meant to be so here we are honestly just how authentic it was you know uh some of the other meetings were a little tense but uh I think this one everybody was just authentic and uh straight up and it was just great from you know the moment I walked in the door you know handshakes uh everything just felt right from the moment I walked in so finally I asked Devin about what he’s heard about Sacramento and playing in front of King’s fans and he’s done his research let’s just say that excited for the atmosphere in the games uh it’s crazy I’ve seen videos obviously live games uh ready to light the beam you know uh everything going on with that so I’m just is ready man I’m ready to hop on the Jet and get over there all right now let’s hear from kings’s general manager Monty McNair right away he was talked about roster construction and the abundance of guards and he kind of explained why his philosophy led to the Kings even with a lot of guards on their roster emphasizing going out and getting Carter know we understand the importance of roster balance not just across positions but skill sets um and uh you know we’re at the beginning of of the off season where where will be able to continue to shape the roster but um as I’ve continually said in the draft the draft is not about right now uh the draft is about adding somebody to our team who could be here for a long time and we try to draft the best player available and you know we look for versatile guys I mean Devin Carter just checks checks all the boxes if you watch the playoffs this year there are a lot of Devon Carter’s out there I’ll put it that way and um so we try to find tough physical guys who can play on both ends make a shot score the ball switch guard guys rebound I mean I like that we we we couldn’t pass up so um you know we understand the rest of the roster and what we’ll have to do there uh but tonight was about that in addition to that Monty discussed the rumors of the Kings shopping the 13th pick and those rumors having steam all the way up until the Kings decided to make a selection and Monty explains ultimately why they went with Devon and how they were kind of surprised that that Deon was on the board certainly an active active night and active you know few days as as always because uh you don’t know how the board’s going to shake out you don’t know what the opportunities are going to be um we do a lot of scenario planning a lot of um trying hypothetical what are what are the decisions we might be facing um I think at the end of the day Devon somebody very high up on our board that we really weren’t expecting to be there at 13 and so uh when he was there we decided to pick it and add him to our to our group Works said uh as always lot lots of discussion around the pick uh it’s a lottery pick you know um so there’s always great interest in that I think what what ended up happening at the end of the day is we had a guy really high up on our board who I think uh many were predicting was going to be a top 10 pick um that ended up there for us at 13 and um when that happened uh nothing else uh on our board beat that and we’re excited to select him finally I asked Monty a couple of questions the first one was also about Mike Brown and Carter’s fit in Mike Brown’s system just hearing over the last two years how Mike has kind of preach defense and versatility on that end of the floor Devon seems to fit a lot into that how much was Mike involved in the process and what do you envision Devon’s fit in Mike’s system yeah well well first of all we’re excited to have Coach Brown here even longer um and uh I know I haven’t talked to you guys since then but um you know Mike uh and his ability to get the the most out of guys and our defense I think the best that’s been in in quite a long time this year um but still not good enough and uh so but I think Devin you know certainly the defense and what he can do on that end is uh one of the the cornerstones of his game but uh I think what’s appealing about him is that you can you can put him on the floor and both ends he’s going to contribute and uh you know I think as talk talking with Mike we just got to continue to find guys um that can play both ends and that can can stick on the floor no matter what the other team throws at him and I asked Monty about Carter’s rebounding and how he expects that to translate to the NBA this was one of my favorite answers that I think Monty is ever given about how excited he is for Carter’s rebounding ability as a 6 fo2 guard Devon’s rebounding numbers really jump off the page averaging I think nine a game for in the most recent season he played at 6’2 How unique is that skill set for him and and I guess what do you what is your assessment of when looking at player Talent someone like him who can get those kind of boards for you one great thing and and our group does a great job we we have we have Scouts that watch these guys all the time uh and they’re marrying what they’re seeing with their eyes with the numbers one thing was great with the numbers rebounding translates just about as well as any skill so um Devin will Rebound in the NBA and that’s that’s a very important school we remember defensive rebounding that was a big part of our defensive Improvement at the same time being a rebounder means not just rebounding it means you’re smart it means you’re active it means you’re tough it means you can jump uh it signals a bunch of other things that you can do on the court and uh so guys who can rebound guys who block shots guys who get steals if that lines up with what our Scouts are seeing that he can put those and manifest those onto the court in ways that help us win um that’s where we feel really comfortable and Deon was was I think the guy in the draft that put those things together the best and that just gives us the most conf confidence going to continue to do it for us okay you’ve heard from me you’ve heard from Monty you’ve heard from Devin Carter now I want to hear from you your thoughts on this pick are you coming around a little bit more are you still frustrated were you even frustrated to begin with so many people saying this was a steal of a pick for Sacramento at 13 I certainly hope that they are right and look you look at Monty McNair’s track record drafting Talent he’s done a pretty damn good job so maybe he deserves some of the benefit of the doubt in that sense but I’m not telling you how to feel you tell me how you’re feeling as a king’s fan tonight hit me up atmt Georg sack on Twitter you can email me Matt jports gmail.com if you’re watching on YouTube leave your thoughts in the comment section down below this was just day one of the draft tomorrow is day two the Kings still have a second round pick to deal with certainly won’t be as exciting as today but still chances for Kings to make moves around the draft we’ll see what they do with the second round I’ll have another locked on Kings podcast tomorrow night recapping anything that the Kings do that day plus probably a little more thought on this Devin Carter selection appreciate your support can’t wait to have you join me on the next episode of lockon Kings until then my name is Matt George you’ve been listening to the lockon Kings podcast part of the lockon podcast Network [Music]

  1. We now have 8 guards and 0 PF's. Denver picked up another big and we have to play them. What does our FO have against a big front court?

  2. Please make moves Monte stop being scared all other teams improving we been stagnant for awhile now Carter is a dawg but we said the same thing about Mitchell & Colby how has that worked out we need length I'm worried Carter's 3 point percentage will dip in the NBA it's harder than college I'm seeing Davion 2.0 seems like teams don't wanna do business with us being we have no real assets & trust me Barnes & Huerter not getting much in return I'm rooting for this kid Carter just want to see this team thrive not regress which will happen if we remain scary on making moves

  3. dalton knecht would’ve made more sense instead of drafting a guy were hoping that he can knock down a jump shot consistently.

  4. I was hoping for Edey, but since the Grizzlies picked him, Devin Carter being our target worked out great. He's a gritty guard, exactly what we need for our team!!!

  5. C+ draft pick. He's a good player. But how many PG's do we need. But they should have drafted Dalton Knecht, or trade down and get Terrance Shannon Jr. Both players would have played a better role for the Kings. Monte is a really good GM, and I think Carter is a good player, but not a fan of this strategy.

  6. I am fine with this pick. Yup we need a solid Pf but we also must not to forget how bad this team was at defending 3pt. Next we must trade michell, huerter and barnes. I think its still posible to get Kuzma. As far as i read they are intetested in michell and huerter. Just go for it even if we would need to add future 1st. Maybe we can get kispert too then. Atm i see as guards roration: fox, monk, ellis and carter. Maybe ellis could cover Sf position too a bit. I see monk as backup Pg since we must find a way to give him at least 30 mpg. Also if avdija was available (didint see this coming) maybe there are or will be other options that doesnt seems available atm. Maybe Markkannen?:) all in all i hope Monte will be agressive and will use future picks if needed. I will be happy even with risky moves.
P.s. want to say to host that i really like this podcast and your emotions. I am from country where basketball is a sport number 1 and people here often say that nba is more about making money and show its great too see that there so many people that really loves this game. Keep it up a good work and best wishes from Lithuania.

  7. Honestly its not a bad move for the future. I see him becoming a reliable player in a few years. Obviously we have a ton of guards but thats gonna change because we have to trade. I have faith that we can trade for someone worthwhile at the 3 or 4 later on this offseason.

  8. Hey Matt. Saw your initial reaction from a previous video from being pessimistic to now being optimistic! I'm with you on the optimistic side.. I really like Devin Carter and is my #1 choice at #13. I really believe he is the best choice ans I wouldn't worry to much about the guard position coz we all know one of Davion or Huerter won't be back next season. Carter could easily replace Davion as Fox's backup

  9. For me, this is a pack that has a lot of potential to make a lot of sense. Now it's on Monte to go out and make the moves necessary for this to make sense.
