with the 28th selection the Phoenix Suns drafting Virginia’s Ryan Dunn an elite Defender only division one player with 75 blocks 40 steals last season 68 260 pound guard made the ACC all defensive team his brother Justin pitched for the Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds so an athletic background 68 216 headed to the Phoenix Suns Adam what do you think about this one what’s your grade for Ryan Dunn headed to Phoenix this is one of the best defensive players in college basketball last year he is a explosive a who didn’t get to show it all because Virginia played so slow he’s also a very good cutter so in that Phoenix system where you’ve got so many shooters and scorers I think he’s going to be able to weaponize that ability the key and I don’t mean to sound like a broken record here is the shooting but with him it it’s going to be a wild ride because the shot is is pretty far away if he can get to the point where opposing defenses just have to respect him as an open spot up shooter I mean just stand in the corner with your feet set and if they throw it to you prove that you can make one out of three that’s it he’s going to be a long-term NBA player this is a b because that is not a guarantee the shooting is still a ways away he’s got to prove that because it might not matter on a Tuesday night in January in Charlotte but eventually you’re going to be in game five of Western Conference semi-finals and they will leave you alone out there they’ll just they’ll just leave you alone and they’ll make you take that shot watch you miss they have your they Center guard you these they’ll go the other way right and then your coach has got to take you out the game there are concern concerns that that might be his future but the defensive stuff is all so obvious and the analytics connected to it are strong the tape is strong and in a place like Phoenix where you got Devin Booker Kevin Durant Bradley Bill you got plenty of guys who can score plenty there ain’t a lot of shots to take in Phoenix anyway now you got somebody who doesn’t really need to take shots to be impactful I like the way this works it would be similar because he didn’t have a lot of shots at at Virginia because it’s a low possession offensive team it would take like eight a game yeah virgin his best chance is to be some similar to Bruce Bowen who had a nice finish to his career at San Antonio he developed a corner three he went to the left corner or the right corner and he made those threes he didn’t take long threes from at the top of the key he found that one spot he’s going to have that opportunity he’s playing with guys that get doubled in triple team and A lot of times they’re not going to even close out to him they’re going to stay in the paint and force him to shoot that shot
