Why the Memphis Grizzlies said Zach Edey was their guy all along in the 2024 NBA draft

Why the Memphis Grizzlies said Zach Edey was their guy all along in the 2024 NBA draft

the draft board looked like it was working in the Grizzlies favor Donovan kingan didn’t go two he didn’t go three he didn’t go four he didn’t go five he didn’t even go sixth he went seventh though but then the Grizzlies were set up to pick night D kette was still there montis buis was still there but the Grizzlies said no we don’t want either one of those guys in fact we’ve already had our guy keyed in this entire time the grizzly selected Zack Edy from Purdue one of the most accomplished college basketball players of the 21st century we talked to Zack kimman after the draft on last night he had a lot of things to say and we’re gonna break everything down right here coming up next on lockon grizzly you are locked on Grizzlies your daily Memphis Grizzlies podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what’s going on everyone and welcome back to locked on Grizzlies I am your host today de Michel Co beat writer for the Commercial Appeal right here in Memphis Tennessee and welcome to a grand special edition of our post NBA draft uh first round of Edition at least of coverage as the grizzly selected Zack Edy out of produced 7 foot4 295 300 pound Center as I mentioned one of the most accomplished college basketball players of the 21st century two-time wooden Award winner two-time Nas M Award winner all of those things this is the guy this is the big man that the Grizzlies selected to be the big man that’s going to kind of roam the middle for years to come but before we get to all that today’s episode is brought to by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use the code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms May apply well let’s get into it there’s a lot to kind of appeal back here on today’s show so make sure you stay tuned with us all throughout the show because we’re going to talk about everything inside the Grizzlies draft process until getting Zack Ed at 9 in our second segment we’re going to break down to Zack Ed analysis uh what we’ve learned about him what we know about him what the stats say about him and kind of what the Grizzlies thought process is with him and then building up off of that in the Grizzlies thoughts process you probably want to know what Zack kimman had to say as well the Grizzlies general manager and president of basketball operations talk to him uh after uh the draft on Wednesday now after the first round and he had a bunch of things to say that I think will catch a lot of you guys eyes so uh we’ll talk about that in the third segment as well but let’s get started in terms of why Zack eating uh how did it get to this point and many of you some people were uh not too pleased with the pig let let me start here you with myself because I know that there have been a couple people say oh DeMarco you haven’t talked about Zack Ed as much as you know Donovan clinin or Dalton kette or khil wear and things like that uh let’s be clear uh I have no problem with the idea of adding Zack Ed on this team there Works guys that I favored over him yes uh if d kette was on the board I felt like that should have been the pick or khil we uh in in quite frankly in a trade down Zack Edy made more sense me but the Grizzlies had their guy and look history will tell you the Grizzlies have no problem if they have a guy that they want they will reach for him you know you can say what you want about the Jake laravia selection or David Ry selection or whatever the case may be I specifically remember when the Grizzlies drafted Jake laravia uh told us that that was the guy all along and they traded up to get him and even though it caught some of us as kind of like a out of left field move uh in in the spot that they got but with all that being said inside the process here basically uh there were some reports out there at about number six because if you been following lock on Grizzly we’ve talked about the idea that the Grizzlies if they get Donovan kingan the spots Fifth and six made the most sense Donovan kingan was on the the board and then the fifth pick came uh Detroit kept its pick and drafted Ron Holland so when that six pick goty there I I was I was all eyes in just trying to see uh what would happen because you knew that there probably be some conversations between Charlotte and Memphis in that situation and indeed there were uh multiple reports indicated I think uh Yahoo sports Jake fiser first and then Adrien wowski at ESPN as well basically wge came out and said that you know the Grizzlies did have interest in trading up to number six now after the Draft Zack kimman you know basically said that uh the Grizzlies got their guy he he said that this is exactly how the Grizzlies wanted the draft to play out was he saying that just because you know he didn’t want to slight Edy in any type of way probably a little bit but I I I do think that the Grizzlies feel strongly about Edy um again he wasn’t the top option for me but at the same time he wasn’t a bad op to me I was never uh mad to the point where he was not a good option for the Grizz I think he is a solid option I said all along the Grizzlies do not need a big man who’s G to come in and be an All-Star they don’t need that if he becomes that then great but that’s not what they need they have those guys they need someone who’s going to fill in the pieces around those core players and some of the things that Zack Edy does well kind of fits into that process so yes there were some conversations at number six overall there and I think you know based on what we gathered and based on what you can tell uh that probably was to go trade up and get Donovan cling now you you don’t get cling you end up with Zack Edy and again climbing uh we saw John Morant jar Jackson Jr uh a lot of people in the Grizzlies organization are very happy about this pick uh so there is that part of it as well like they are uh thrilled with the idea of Adam Zack Ed no matter what happened at six and if it was if they were trying to get clinging or whether the case may be sometimes things just don’t work out you know uh whether it was the price or whatever the case may be they still ended up getting a big uh in this range so then there’s another level here to to the to uh kind of unveil with why the Grizzlies had this interest in Zack Edy and why he was the guy when Z Ed because he was a senior fouryear player uh when Zach e originally declared for the draft after his junior year we tested the waters and then decided to come back to Purdue that was when the Grizzlies kind of really did their homework on it they were very interested in Zack Edy last year this is a guy uh that they’ve been again interested in for over a year so they watched them closely this year and last year uh they talked to him and based on those conversations Zack kimman kind of already got a a feel for this guy being a fit you know culturally and just you know fitting around the team and then there’s other cor you know there’s other layers to the idea of adding Zack Ed as well we talked about the fact that the players are pretty much on board with it you know uh the main players that you want to be on board with are your star guys Desmond Bane sent out a tweet and Well on X he sent out a post on X formerly known as Twitter and he said let’s go in all caps indic and how excited he was about the move jiren Jackson Jr posted the little salute emojis as well and then there’s John Mor John Mor went a little bit step further shout out to the fans of rush hour out there uh Rush Hour 3 uh had a scene where uh Chris Tucker uh detective James Carter walks in a room and he sees it sees this uh this kid this Karate Kid that’s you know gigantic and he looks up at him and it’s just like whoa uh jaran res shared that clip on his Instagram account and he he posted another picture and that probably went over a lot of people’s heads but he posted a picture of you know some of his associates uh taking a photo with Zack Edy at Summer League last year and there’s to there’s more to that fellow than you know John morant’s trainer is Trey Draper uh it’s one of his trainers Trey japer was at IMG Academy Trey J is also a Memphis native he was at IMG Academy all of the years that Zack Edy was there in high school uh IMG is where Zack Edy was before he attended Purdue so there is already a familiarity from one of the main people in Jaws Camp to Zack e there’s already a direct tie into John Morant there uh so look it sounds like uh the people in Memphis are excited I I was talking to another person who told me that Memphis is going to love Z Ed as well so all things considered the the process it seems like the Grizzlies did their homework it’s homework that’s been done well over a year on the idea of adding Zack Edy uh to this team but what are they goingon to get in Zack Ed that’s what we got to really get into next uh the nysis the nitty-gritty uh I have a lot of takeaways in terms of how he can fit and what his game will look like on this Grizzlies roster let’s talk about that next but before we get to that today’s episode of lock on Grizzlies is brought to you by game locked on Grizzlies we got to talk about the fit How does Zack Edy fit in Memphis stay tuned for that next here on locked on Grizzlies welcome back to locked on Grizzles everyone I’m dich kop R of the Commercial Appeal here in Memphis Tennessee talking about the Zack Ed fit uh we went inside the process I know there were questions about uh did the Grizzlies even tried to trade up uh multiple reports indicated that that was the case and if they had tried to trade up it probably was going to be for Donovan Clingan because Memphis coincidentally tried to get six and Donovan kingan went seventh so with all that being said now we’re past all that let’s talk about the guy that’s here right Zack Edy is your guy now this is the guy and where do the Grizzlies go from here where do Zack e in the fit go from here well let’s start here there’s a lot to uncover uh with with this play he averaged over 25 points and 12 rebounds as a senior uh nasman Player of the Year wouldn’t play Ear the year easily top basketball player college basketball player in the world this past season and he was as a junior as well 22 points a game 13 rebounds a game averag over two blocks in his Junior and his senior uh the rebounding was great that is something that stood out to the Grizzlies as well they wanted to put a guy who could really dominate the glass on the floor now some Zack Edy has demonstrated that he can do in his four years of college basketball but how about we start here before we get into the offensive and the defensive stuff uh there’s the fact that in Zack Ed’s senior year Purdue went to a more and this is going to trans transition us into the offensive side Purdue went more to an NBA Style kind of offense if if you watch Purdue the last two years because they’ve been a number one seed both years primarily because of Zack if you watch them a couple years ago you you notice that uh it was a lot of throw the ball into the paint to Zach Edy and a lot of guys were just watching and it’s let him cook let him let him you know destroy other teams and he did that for the most part but when they got to the NCAA tournament they were an early out primarily because uh Team figured out hey look take away Zack Edy you win the game simple this season Purdue said you know what we’re going to do more of an NBA style uh offense and that kind of benefit did Zack Ed what did they do more of well there was constant movement there were a lot of ball screens there were a lot of actions ran and it looked more like an NBA offense you put the ball in Zack Ed’s hand they ran actions off of it there were a lot of screening a lot of screening and a lot of movement so all of that bods well for how Zack Edy transitions to the NBA now getting into his offensive game the one thing that stands out about Zack e is just dominance in the paint you got to start there this is one of the most dominant paint scores uh in college basketball the 21st century period he will destroy mismatches and this is something that really stands out uh particularly of how he fits with the Grizzlies when johnar has the basketball and he’s a good screen Setter as well if you look at John Mor in the past he played with yonis Val chunis he played with Stephen ad who did Zack e compare himself to at Scout comeb by in may he said he he said I am I’m a paint presence that’s how I I do my work in the paint you know paraphrasing but he basically said that you know he compared himself to Stephen Adams iisa zubac and jonis valent chunis two of those guys so happen to be the last two uh primary starting centers for the Memphis Grizzlies so if you get anything like that out of him I think it’s a win but I gotta start with the mismatches point because as good as Stephen Adams was for the Grizzlies because he was less usage than yonis Val which allowed for JA and other guys to shine a little bit more but Stephen Adams as strong as he was he never really took advantage of mismatches the way I expect you know someone his size to really do so I think it was more evident in any series uh then the most evident it was was when the Grizzlies play Golden State right they play Golden State second round of the playoffs and you’re watching that series and even Adams gets put in the starting lineup after he you know starts the season coming off the bench he gets putting the starting lineup and the Warriors are starting Draymond Green and then the Warriors are switching everything and you got guys like Andrew Wiggins and all these other smaller guys against Stephen Adams and he’s not scoring 20 points and I just was I remember being out there in San Francisco with my hands on my head like how how is he not dominating this matchup but with Zack Edy you don’t got to worry about that in College there were two three Defenders around his vicinity at all times and then the NBA with more space and things like that uh there is more potential for him to dominate the paint he drew a lot of fouls in college as well uh that craftiness should easily translate to the NBA I I know some a lot of college F basketball fans that were hating on Zack ED Style you know you weren’t a big fan of that but uh it’s a craftiness that can translate to the NBA he was very good you know uh getting guys arms trapped in his arms and drawing fouls and things like that he’s a solid free throw shooter 70% free throw shooter as well so uh that those are the good offensive traits that really stand out again he’s gonna take advantage of the mismatches and he sets really good screens and he’s gonna be a lock threat I think those that’s pretty much what you need him to be offensively you don’t need him to shoot that many three-pointers even though at the scouting combine if you saw he made 14 of 25 three-point attempts during the drills but uh you don’t need him to do that if he if he adds that then you know hooray you you you win even more but uh at the same time you just need him to win at in his role you got the star plays you got three guys in Star lineup that could potentially average 20 plus points you don’t need him to be anything amazing on that now on the defensive end you do need him to be amazing and does he have the potential to do so yes uh this is a schematic uh fit here in terms of how does he fit with the Grizzlies the Grizzlies want to use Z as a drop Defender which you you look at Rudy goar for over the most of his career mainly in Utah they used him as a drop Defender which allowed him to pretty much stay in the paint a lot you look at Brook Lopez and Milwaukee when he’s been a defensive player of the year candidate it’s been mainly as a drop Defender those are two guys uh more so Brook Lopez than Rudy go because Rudy goar guarded on the perimeter a little bit more this year but Brook Lopez to me hasn’t really a good you know isolation defender on the perimeter but where he shines is he is one of the best defensive centers defensive anchors when it comes to playing in drop coverage the Grizzlies want to say hey let’s throw Zack Ed and drop coverage let him play to his stren the foot agility is a question mark he gets on the perimeter you saw it at the Collegiate level there were a lot of times where he got beat off the dribble but there’s not as much space in E clesia Lil so he makes up that you know with that 7eleven wings span and a 74 height he can kind of close that Gap a little bit more when guys beat him off the dribble in the NBA it’s going to be harder to close that Gap uh that is a question so uh we’ll talk a little bit more about that as we get into the last segment but uh that is a big question mark for for Zack Ed I I think that’s going to be the one team where teams see him and they say look we got all these explosive Wings these quick guards go at him make the grizzly say look we got to take you out the take you out of this game that’s what teams are going to try to do but what the Grizzlies are going to try to do is they’re going to put him in that drop coverage let him kind of be you know a dominant paint Defender and you try to shoot that mid-range shot they’re going to try to depend on him to close the gap because he has a 7-Eleven wing span which he’s capable of doing averaged over two blocks each of the last two seasons and guys just really weren’t trying Zak like that like they weren’t even trying to go in his paint and and be in his area so us what I think is offensively I think it’s goingon to be an easier transition for him the Grizz is not gonna ask him to do a lot and I think that’ll be an easier transition defensively they could be some hiccups uh but it is a it’s a simplified role in terms of the Grizzlies won’t be asking him to go out in the perimeter to the guard much uh they want him to be a drop Defender but um one thing about the Grizzlies and one thing about Taylor Jenkins is he likes to mix up coverages so there may be times where he just say you know the heck with it like Zack you you got to hold your own out there and is going to have to hold his own one thing that Zack kman pointed out to me as well pointed out to the media and he basically said that Zack Edy had to play kind of with a with a real controlled aggressiveness at Purdue because if you watch Purdue it was it was Zack Ed’s Team without a doubt like that team without him is nowhere near a number one seed prob with all respect uh to what Purdue did this year Bron Smith really good player and had some other good players as well but without Zack Edy it’s a completely different team everything revolved around him on the offensive and defensive end he was so important to the team that kman kind of pointed out the fact that he averaged 1.9 fouls basically two fouls in 32 minutes of game time they didn’t want him to get off the floor now with the Grizzlies he’s not gonna play 32 minutes the G Stephen Adams Jonas Valen none of those guys they’re not asking centers to play 32 minutes in Memphis so with that being the case yeah you’re going to play 24 probably 25 minutes if you’re in that starting roow go out there be as aggressive as you want you can pick up three or four fouls it’s fine if those guys come to the rim knock them around if you can’t block the shot he didn’t have that that uh leeway I would say at Purdue now he has that in Memphis and that’s going to be a big key to how he can progress how aggressive he can be on the defensive end as well coming up next here on lockone Grizzlies Zack kimman the Grizzlies general manager and president of basketball operations talked to us after the NBA’s first round concluded we got to talk about what he said but before we talk about what he said I want you to remember something because are you watching Fox Sports and ESPN on your TV all day and you have to turn the volume down because they’re doing all that shouting make the switch over to locked on sports today it’s a free 247 sports streaming Channel programmed for you every day to bring you the biggest Sports stories without all the screaming and hooing and holl lockdown sports today brings you can’t miss analysis opinions and news streaming 247 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app it’s part of the locked on podcast Network which is your team each and every up here on locked on Grizzlies let’s talk about Zack climate and what he had to say stay tuned for that welcome back to locked on Grizzles everyone I’m do Co beat wrer for the Commercial Appeal here in Memphis Tennessee recapping what we talked about so far we went inside the process how did the Grizzlies get to Zack Edy at number nine Zack kman said this is the guy we wanted all along there were some reports out there that said ah you actually wanted to move up to number six but you didn’t get to move up to number six because of whatever that unfolded between the Grizzlies and Charlotte but nonetheless the Grizzlies end up with Zack kman who I think offensively will have an easier transition to the NBA defensively a couple more question marks there how he’ll play in space and things like that but it’s not like they’re going to ask him to play 30 plus minutes so uh they’re going to try to play to his strengths now let’s expound on that a little bit because Z clim said something important that I’ve kind of set myself in the past but one thing that stands out about the addition of Zack Edy is one word optionality you may say well what does that mean how does that what is optionality gota do with anything here the Grizzlies needed the flexibility to be able to say we can go against any team in the Western Conference any any type of way you want to play it we’re ready for it if you want to play small we can throw Jaren Jackson Jr at the five throw you know uh Vince Williams at the four maybe and and throw a couple extra wings out there you want to play you know you you you got a Carl Anthony towns like type big who’s very mobile may cause some trouble for a guy like Zack Edy oh no problem got Brandon Clark and we can switch everything with Brandon Clark Jackson Jr both in the game at the same time uh net rating numbers by the way have been terrific anytime they’ve been on the floor together over the last four years five years then okay what if you’re going against Rudy Gober and iisa zubac remember you know uh Damonte sabonis had that 20 rebound game against the Grizz looked like he was about to go for 30 Boards N he had 25 what about when you’re going against sabonis when you going against zubba when you’re going against Rudy Gober when you’re going against joic what about those big bu of your guys that are going to cause you some trouble well now you got Zack Ed that’s who he’s for you didn’t Draft Zack Edy to guard Carol Anthony towns 25 feet 30 feet from the basket you draft him to be able to bang with Rudy goar to be able to bang with Visa zubach so he won’t be able to get those have those 15 and 20 type nights or damont sabonis won’t have those 2020 type nights against you or even against joic so he won’t just be tipping the ball to himself around the basket that’s what Zack Edy is here for optionality for any team is important the best teams in the NBA can beat you in a bunch of different ways the Grizzlies they had the potential to go five out against you they have the potential you know uh to to to match up Lon games with Brandon Clark and jiren Jackson Jr and switch everything and have two mobile uh Defenders uh with with size and who can play uh you know close to the rim on the off Zack Ed gives you that pain presence on both sides of on both sides right offensively and defensively and it gives you that optionality uh that’s important because that kind of Shores up one of the weaknesses of that the Grizzlies had I think optionality is one of the things that stands out to me in terms of what he will bring to this team he gives you that physical I mean we’re talking 74300 pounds we we ain’t talking no no skinny 71 200 pound kids they gota get go eat his weedies and you know eat two breakfasts and all that he ain’t got to do none of that he ready he’s ready to to bang with the big boys right now he’s he’s ready for that so you factor all that in then there’s another level there’s the fit with the Stars kind of talked about this a little bit start with jiren Jackson Jr now we’ll start with J because we already kind of mentioned the Jos part so we skip pass that real quick but uh again johnar pick and roll Zack Edy break it down real quick because we’ve seen it with Stephen Adams so so many times like John Morant thrived was at his best when Stephen Adams was set that hard screen and you and teams when they teams didn’t want to switch because that’s what’s gonna happen with Zack e it’s gonna be a when you set a one5 screen even if it’s herb Jones for example like we see teams sometimes a lot of teams guard johnar with bigger uh Defenders let’s say herb Jones arguably the best Wing defender in the NBA let’s use him for example let’s say you got herb Jones G and johnar and Zack Ed sets that hard screen JW’s quick so now you’re trailing behind him and JW’s so quick you you ain’t catching up so you gotta probably switch it and if you force that switch Zack Edy with herb Jones on him is food Zack he with any smaller defender on him in is food they’re going to have to bring the double and he he averaged two assists his last year you know at Purdue he showed the ability to pass the ball again when he had more guys moving off of him uh really took advantage of that his last year so uh the prospects of John Morant and Zach Edy you know Edy set those screens creating space for J that was something uh just reading about and and looking at what people at Purdue was saying Zack e does a really good job of creating space for those guards J don’t need people to create space for him J can create space for but to have that you don’t need to me to tell you what that means I don’t have to tell you what that means that’s sp’s problem not for the Grizzlies for the opponent now then there’s the jiren Jackson Jr angle cuz these are the two All Stars Desmond Bane probably I mean he’s he’s a Grizzly Star but the two all stars on the team right now the guys who’ been there are Des I mean are Jaren Jackson Jr and John Morant well Jaren Jackson Jr we talked about it a bunch like this year he didn’t make First Team all defense team didn’t make the second team after the last two years he was first team all defense one defens player of the year in 2023 and a lot of that was because he played center more this year than he played power forward which took away his ability to be a RoR he had to be the guy who’s protecting the rim a little bit more now as we said the Grizz is going to be playing drop coverage with Zack Ed which means he’s going to have two feet planted in the feet a lot planted in the paint a lot he’s going to take one foot out of the paint every now and then because he got to worry about three seconds and all that so I’m interested to see how all that plays out again that’s part of the question marks for Zack Edy but with jiren Jackson Jr now he gets to be more of that rumor again and uh that that bolts well for the Grizzlies that bats well for jiren Jackson Jr kind of returning to that Defender who was averaging over two and a half close to three blocks per game and we know what Zack Ed is going to be he’s going to protect protect the rim as well now you got two guys that are basically going to tell teams don’t you come in our paint don’t you dare come in our paint so that’s that’s what you got here uh overall again I I think Zack Edy is a solid pick would I’ve selected him at number nine no I would have traded down and probably tried to get him a little bit uh later if I would have could have at 13 14 the next big that was selected was khil wear at number 15 so uh unless one of those teams just you know also like Zack e more than the other bigs those teams were taking guards and wings so value-wise I’m not great on it fitwise I’m great with it that’s the different I don’t like the value I love the fit so uh that’s how I feel about uh the Zack Edy uh addition to the Memphis Grizzlies and there’s also more work to be done again we’re talking about Zack kimman comments uh he also added because there is a second round that’ll happen here he added that the Grizzlies they like the way that the board shaked out you know he’s not GNA say too much more than that because um doesn’t want to uh L you know tilt his hand in any direction but the Grizz have the 39th pick they also have the 57th pick in the second round we be interesting to see uh where they go uh I’ve been a opponent I’ve basically you know been on the record saying that the Grizzlies need shooting bayor Sharman was the last pick of the first round caught my eye terrific pick by Boston there but there are a couple guys that stand out you know Johnny Fury shot 35% at Kansas but the stroke you know for a freshman uh looks promising as well he’s one that catches my Jaylen Wells again I’ve said his name he’s a guy that the Grizzlies have done their extensive reports on uh will Jaylen Wells be that guy he’ll be available potentially at 39 or even 57 that’s another guy that they could Target as well but I think shooting is a primary need as we go to the second day maybe they’ll go for backup point guard play or something like that but I just think another Wing shooter in addition to to put around the Zack edes or and the jiren Jackson jors and the John Mor and the Desmond bands of the world we’ll see how uh Zack Ed fits overall on the team there’s so much more to talk about we got to talk about summer league we got to talk about if he’s going to be there we got to talk about you know him playing in the Olympics because he right now he is on the Adan roster so so many things to talk about we’ll talk 1. I'm reserving my opinions until I see him in action with the team. I think if he can rebound, screen and defend, we're OK.

  2. There were a few clues this was always going to happen. First Edey said Memphis was talking to him. And klineman said strongly we are gonna get a big ,his words really stressed big. Then Ja said it’s gonna be crazy , then I knew the only crazy move to some people was Edey ,and I love it.

  3. Zach should be okay. Against certain playoff teams, like Minnesota, he might not play much. However, you have to get there first. As a regular season big, he'll be okay, in a certain role

  4. Dude, why in the world would you want Clingan over Edey? Edey ate his lunch in the championship game. Clingan may or may not make it in the NBA. Edey is a sure bet.

  5. They didn't even workout Clingan though I like Clingan as well, he is injury-prone. If the Grizz needed a physical C, it was Clingan or Edey .. 260 lbs vs 300 lbs both are team-first players. National champion vs 2-time Naismith winner. Either was fine but imo Edey is one if Memphis wanted to dominate the paint for a generation.. he dominated Clingan in the finals.. his upside is still yet to be reached. Every post-up is a mismatch, great at kickouts to 3-shooters, painful screen and rolls with Ja, add a reliable mid-range shot to take some stress off thos knees.

  6. I know Edney is not mister everything. I love this pick. Got tired of watching TJ get pushed around the basket.
    And Edney had been durable
    Go Grizz

  7. A+ analysis, very insightful. Question on your last segment about value…I also agree that not many teams looked like Edey fits at first glance until 15, but what about OKC at 12? They're a bold FO willing to go against the grain. Edey isn't their typical "type" but he also offers something very different from the rest of the roster and could be useful to bang against the bigger centers in the league. If they had Edey against Dallas, it would've helped against the Lively/Gafford duo. I absolutely loved the Topic pick, but that was clearly a luxury +1 pick because he might not even play this year and they don't really need him this year. So theoretically they could've gone Edey as a luxury pick.

  8. I’m sorry but this was an awful pick. You may like in Edey in the regular season, but he will be played off the floor in the playoffs just like Adams was. We needed to evolve, not regress

  9. Edey tested better athletically then all the centers drafted in front of him at the combine. Edey was the best player in this draft hands down and will win rookie of the year.

  10. Poor pick. Would've been better drafting Knecht, Carter, Ware, or trading down to take Edey.
People keep mentioning him dominating Clingan in the title game without context. He did early on, but in the crucial moments of the game in the 2nd half, Clingan shut him down. Also, Edey won't be matched up with a Clingan every night. Putting up numbers in college ≠ success in the NBA.
I hope he pans out though.

  11. The first 8 teams will regret they didn't drafted the two-time player of the year monster! Nobody can guard Edey and he destroyed Clingan in the championship game. He will be ROY.

  12. I think the rumor of memphis trading into 6 was smoke screen to get Portland to take clingan instead of edey. Portland was rumored to take edey

  13. Find IMG or freshman film
    All he does is work
    He gets better every year

Nobody in college came close to stopping him

PS he took teammates to both Naismith awards which shocked the hosts

He turned down the green room for a last chance to be with his family-coaches-Teammates

  14. Why would Grizzlies fans have a problem with the team drafting Zach Edey. Management did not move up in the draft to grab Clingan, so be it.
Steve adams is gone and wwe have to accept that. Edey will be able to do what Steve Adams did for the team. Let's Go!

  15. I still don't understand why so many Grizz fans preferred Clingan over Edey. Head to head, Edey dominated the matchup. At the combine, his agility/mobility numbers were better than Clingan, but the media and fans are stuck in the 'big & slow' narrative.

  16. I'm a Purdue fan. I think Zach will struggle at covering pick and rolls. Especially if it turns into a pick and pop. However, he will cause havoc in the post. Teams will need to double down on him putting the defense into a scramble. His rebounding will also be elite. I hope he has a good career with Memphis. It will be interesting to see how it goes with a throwback center playing in today's NBA.

  17. I think Zach will be great! Not a hall of famer, but still really good. People were acting like He will never ever get faster or better on defense. That is ludicrous. Everything changes, especially if you have a bit of weight to lose

  18. Feels like the return of Marc Gasol 2 me, he was the best college basketball player 4 the past 2 seasons I don't have a problem with that pick.

  19. Zach Edey people hate on his game which is nuts all that guy does is crushes his matchup. Bruh what did with little white guards from Prudue, Ja and Bane are going offfff this year from the screens he sets.
