FILM BREAKDOWN: What the Cleveland Cavaliers are getting in Jaylon Tyson?

what is up guys it is 10:30 in the morning we’ll be on ucss in about half an hour but uh there’s three guys on the panel today which means I don’t know how much I’ll get to talk about the Cav selection of Jaylen Tyson so we’re going to do a quick 510 minute video breakdown of what Tyson brings to the Cavs how he fits into Kenny Atkinson’s offensive system and what he needs to work on in case we don’t get a chance to cover it during the full show today so with that let’s get right to it from the ucss offices this is a impromptu ultimate cavaliere [Music] show so last night on the live draft stream when the Cavs took Jaylen Tyson out of Cal I frankly was a bit taken back I did a ton of research and studied and homework on about 15 different prospects Tyson was on my list but I really didn’t think he was a possibility for Cleveland at number 20 so I didn’t have have as much prepared as I should have for the selection lesson learned McNuggets I’ll keep that in mind for next time however stayed up pretty late last night spent a good time this morning going through a few of his games from his Junior season at Cal and here are some takeaways on Jaylen Tyson the Cavs big guard SL small wing you can call him whatever the hell you want he’s 66 215 a western conference coach that he had an NBA ready body and strong as an ox were the two ways he described Jaylen Tyson after working him out so big guard small wing you can call him whatever you want but the reality is he does bring something to the Cavs that they did not have previously or did not have a plethora of previously if you were looking for a big wi replacement he ain’t it he’s not in the Tristan D Silva category of 69 he’s not a Jason Tatum es 68 Wing score if you were looking for a big win you will probably be disappointed in what Jaylen Tyson brings to the table if you’re comfortable with Kobe Alman and Company drafting a potential replacement to Caris LeVert making him more Expendable in trades or just more Expendable in general because he’s entering the final year of his contract I think you’ll be more happy with the selection of Jaylen Tyson we’re going to go through a few things he does very well and a few things that I find very intriguing about his uh his offensive game so let’s run through some of what Jaylen Tyson does very well and then we’ll finish with some of the things that Jaylen Tyson needs to work on as he continues to move forward but before we get to that I just want to tell you I posted a bunch of this stuff on Twitter you can go through it and read it if you want a little more insight but a western conference coach who worked out Tyson pre-draft I texted him this morning and said hey what was your takeaway from Tyson he’s one of the guys we did not talk about and his exact quote on Jaylen Tyson was this quote strong as an ox NBA ready body in game communicates well on defense I thought his handle was a little stiff and his shot release needs to be sped up but he can get minutes tomorrow at 20 I like the pick that was from a Western Conference NBA coach who worked out Tyson during the preff process so with that let’s look at some of the things Tyson does well and then look at the things that Tyson needs to improve on first and foremost he is a shot maker and a shot taker he can create space off the dribble there was one website that compared him to Isaac aoro yesterday as his NBA comp and I thought that’s just a horrific lazy excuse for a comp they have the same me measurables but their games could not be more different and for example the first clip I’m going to show you is 90 seconds of Tyson creating space and making shots which is something we have yet to see from Isa aoro and something he did not do during his collegiate career at Auburn so see if I can figure out how to put this into a screen where I can talk about it at the same time it’s playing and if not not sure I can so I’m just gonna talk over this Jaylen Tyson’s a guy who can off the dribble create his own shot he’s a guy who is willing to shoot from three he’s a guy who has a enough handle to create space against Collegiate Defenders he’s a guy who if you sag off will pull up from three like you see here against USC he’s a guy who has enough shiftiness to get to the paint we’ll talk about his finishing in one second but you tell me where you see any Isaac aoro in this kid’s game because I I am yet to see that comparison payoff shot release needs to be sped up we’ll talk about that in a little bit but he certainly has the the ability to create space off the dribble which aoro doesn’t really have Levert does stru that is not his strength by any means it is something Tyson did on a regular basis at Cal he was really their only offensive option so he went one on five a lot and his his teammates kind of gave him the green light to just take shots and it’s a lot easier and a lot more comfortable to feel comfortable taking and making some of these shots when you know you have the ultimate green light but Jaylen Tyson is certainly guy who is not afraid to try and create his own shot and create off the dribble whether it’s in a high ball screen situation or it’s off a catch and shoot or it’s off some sort of play action that the coach designed he is a willing and creative shooter and shot maker and in the today’s NBA you cannot have enough of those guys so first and foremost that’s a skill set he brings to the Cavaliers that frankly they did not have in plethora before the draft pick last night second off J Tyson as that Western Conference coach said strong as an ox with an NBA ready body He’s listed at 66 215 or 220 depending on the website and he is not afraid to use that strength to get to the cup and here are some plays of Jaylen Tyson finishing I am not sure when push comes to shove if he’ll be able to dunk on guys in the NBA like he did on a pretty regular basis in college but throughout the course of this one minute clip you will see time after time he puts his head down and he’s not afraid of content ATT enough space go and then all of a sudden there he is leftand finish right hand finish he’s got a little bit of a float game he’s not super explosive his first step is not super quick but he does a good job using his body and his strength to create space and ward off Defenders as he’s getting to the cup I don’t think he’s going to be able to take guys off the dribble left and right but between his pull-up ability which was uh he ranked very highly I believe the 93rd percentile on the league and efficiency on pull-up jump shots according to cleaning the glass his ability to finish in transition that individual particular skill set I do think translates well from college to the NBA like I said he finished with his left hand finished with his right hand and we’re going to bring this clip back to the beginning when it’s over and just watch these first two clips he has the aggression and the power to dunk on dudes if needed I don’t they go dunk on guys in the NBA but I was impressed with his ability to finish with his left hand with his right hand and the aggression he showed attacking the rim the thing I was most impressed with watching Tyson this morning and last night was the fact that even though he’s a dominant scorer led to pack 12 in scoring First Team all Pack 12 last year he wasn’t a guy who when he wasn’t involved in the offense just stood around and said you guys go I’ll wait my turn he was a willing and effective off ball cutter and as we talked about earlier in the week with the Kenny Atkinson hire that is a big part of his offense cut move don’t stand still and check out some of these plays of Tyson here cutting without the ball as an off ball mover for a guy who’s a primary scorer who is efficient and effective at scoring with the ball in his hands he also is effective at scoring as an off ball cutter this skill set in particular translate very well to what Kenny ainson wants to do offensively and I’m not sure how much say ainson had in this draft pick considering he was just hired and has been overseas for most of the pre-draft process but these off ball Cuts I’m sure will make him happy as he welcomes Jaylen Tyson into the fold those are the positives I found from looking at Jaylen Tyson’s tape last night some of the negatives his shot release it definitely needs to be sped up listen in the NBA the space you get between your Defender the defender’s ability to close out the athleticism of NBA defenses and Guys across the board are significantly higher than you’ll see even in a conference like the Pack 12 which is the power five conference the release is a bit slow it is not horrifically slow it is not oh my God that can’t be fixed slow but it’s definitely not quick I mean you look at Klay Thompson Steph Curry even Max stru these guys get it and the ball is out of their hands in half a second that’s not the case with Jaylen Tyson and it’s not a death sentence but I’ll play this clip again because this is the last one it’s not the quickest release let’s just call it spade a spade can it work yes can he shoot at the NBA level absolutely but something I’d like to see Jaylen Tyson improve upon as he goes through his NBA career is speeding up that release in my opinion from watching tape it’s much quicker off the dribble than it is in catch and shoot situations but it is certainly an area of his game that can improve as he becomes a better player with NBA practice it’s not uncommon for guys to speed up their release as they get more comfortable shooting and as they get older and stronger and kind of learn the nuances of shooting in the NBA but it’s certainly right now not a strength of his like it is for some players coming out of college the other thing I noticed watching the tape when you score 20 points a game there are a number of different ways you score you’re not usually just a primarily shooter you’re not just primarily a shooter a driver you mix it up and something Tyson did a lot in college was use his NBA ready frame and immense strength to post up smaller Defenders I just don’t think he’s gonna be doing this very frequently on the NBA level this is not even a knock on Tyson because he was pretty eff uh efficient and effective using his postup game in college I just don’t expect that to be part of his offensive Arsenal on the NBA level so less of a knock and more of an observation but this was something in his bag he went to quite frequently at the University of California I don’t think it’s something we will see a ton on the NBA level he’s just going to be going up against bigger and stronger Defenders who are more similar to his body type and strength as opposed to undersized guards and forwards at Pacific or Montana State like it’s in this clip so not even necessarily A knock I just don’t think that’s part of his offensive game we will see a ton of as he makes the transition from college to the pros and if you’re taking that out of his game and he scored I don’t know let’s just say four to six points a game off that how does he make up for it becoming a better shooter and getting a quicker relief so to conclude my study and my findings on Jaylen Tyson over the course of when the pick was made last night where my initial reaction was uh I I don’t know enough I I haven’t seen him play to this morning I think is a guy who is a readymade fit for the Cavs rotation I don’t love the pick I don’t hate it I understand why they went that direction there were guys like Kon George and uh in particular Johnny Fury and Kon George who I had ranked slightly higher than Jaylen Tyson but they were more of projects they were not going to be ready to step in and contribute from day one on an NBA level and according to all reports from talking to guys who have worked out Tyson throughout the process he has the body and the game to step in and play from day one in a rotation I don’t think he’ll start frankly I’d be shocked if he started but I do think he can contribute to the Cavs pretty immediately once he gets into the fold of this offense so in conclusion I don’t love the pick I don’t hate the pick I’m kind of right in the middle on it I’ll call it a BB minus for now but the reality is trying to grade a draft pick before he even steps on the court in the summer league is a futile and useless exercise so let’s all be patient and see if this kid can play or not and then we can decide whether or not this was a good or a bad pick from Kobe Alman hopefully you guys enjoyed that breakdown we’ll talk but much more much much more about Jaylen Tyson on the show coming up here in 19 minutes I appreciate you guys tuning in and I’ll see you in 20 minutes on the ultimate Cleveland sports show peace

  1. My immediate concern is playing off the ball. Granted I didn't know hardly anything about the guy. Looking at his highlights, I see a nice player my concern at this point is he had the ball a ton. How does he play off the ball. He has potential, n hopefully Atkinson and co can help him maximize better than okoro did. I don't know much about the guy, I'm going to be optimistic about his potential, growth and the team realizing it. Along with Emoni

  2. Assume it's a bad pick because Altman hasn't made a good one yet. A city like Cleveland needs to draft well to build a title contender as no player would want to be traded there. Cavs won't win a title with Mitchell.

  3. Hoping Koby is on the phone…trading for Cam Johnson…using Tyson…sign and trade with Okoro…possibly Levert!

  4. Dunn,Dadiet Furphy and Klintman were alot higher on my board than Tyson…wanted size and length on the wing!

  5. Kobi is no Andrew Berry. He should have been fired with, or maybe instead of, Bickerstaff. But, to his credit, he did not draft Bronny. That would be such a Cleveland thing to do.

  6. Taurean Prince with a handle meets Dillon Brooks without being a man-child.

He will take a year or two, but he should be a versatile role playing NBA wing.

  7. Nice review! Your review on this dude made me feel a little bit better! Last night I was pissed! What I saw was another “undersized” wing but your review gave me some hope and context. I’m willing to wait and see if this guy can be a true contributor for the Cavs.

  8. he'll get swatted more than Garland which seems impossible … watch altman play him at SF with garland and mitchell lol

  9. Ima need more of our Clevelanders involved with the show UCSS is underrated! love the crew and opinions offered thanks for the content gentlemen.

  10. don't get me wrong I kinda like this pick but at the same time we can't keep taking guys under 6'8. koby keeps giving me neg ammunition atp. Swear they better be getting Emoni Bates ready
