Alex Sarr Is Ready To Win | Sports Junkies
welcome to DC to Alex SAR the number two overall pick in last night’s NBA draft Alex good morning thanks for joining us congratulations hey what do your boys call you do you go by Alex because i’ heard Alexander what’s your nickname no yeah just Alex just Alex okay so dude what I mean how you feeling man yeah did you get any sleep like what was last night like for you yeah I mean it is a relief you know achieving you know like being drafted is a big deal and uh you know I’m really happy to be wizard so what was the story and I’m sure you’ve answered this a million times I’m sorry I didn’t I would just like to hear from you about like oh you didn’t really want to work out for Atlanta like for what we had heard that your people thought maybe this was a better fit for you to play right away that kind of thing is there any truth to that yeah I mean yeah I didn’t work out for Atlanta and I worked out only for the Wizards so you know he worked out in uh in my favor and uh and I’m really happy he turned out that way yeah Alex what was that process like to you did the Wizards come over and and see you in Australia did they come to your home country of France did you come over here and work out in their facility what were the preceding months before the draft like for you yeah I mean uh they saw me uh during uh during my year in Australia I think you know they probably flew to watch a couple games and then uh you know I just had one uh one workout with them uh right before the draft around like one week or two before the draft and uh that’s pretty much it let’s go back to your basketball Journey first of all you come from a basketball family your dad was a pro can you fill us in on your dad’s game and when you first started playing yeah my dad used to play like um kind of for fun in France in like probably fourth Division and um you know he he used to watch a lot of games and I used to go to his game sometimes and um yeah my brother obviously plays for the Thunder so uh yeah I’ll say we I’m definitely part of a basketball family So eventually you go to Real Madrid and um play for that basketball the youth team Luca donic played for Real Madrid he’s a big soccer fan were you a big soccer guy like who was your guy your Cristiano Ronaldo guy I’m a mbappe guy for sure okay of course FR french guy were you when you first started playing with Real Madrid how how big were you at that point I think I was like 6′ seven 6′ eight wow and then when did you join the elite when you moved over here uh you said when yeah how old were you I was 16 2021 oh wow okay so when you’re 16 and you come to the United States who are you living with then I mean they just had to set up for like all the guys that flight forward to will leave to get in the same residence mhm who were some of the guys I was with the Thompson Twins uh don Barlo and U Jan deir players that are kind of like in the NBA right now I mean is is it tough it had to be tough to be a 16-year-old you playing overseas away from your family what was that transition like for you to be so far from home yeah I mean I’ve been living away from home since I was 14 so it was nothing new to me but uh you know it was just another opportunity for me to get better and I was I had like two great years on all right so what’s the rest of the summer going to be like for you um you know obviously got to find a place to live who’s gonna come over live with you you gonna have your parents here how’s what’s the summer going to be like yeah I mean I’m on my way to DC right now uh then I’m getting ready for summer league and after that I might go back to France you know uh and I think training camp is very shortly after this so I think everything is going to speed up in the in the next few weeks it’s going to happen fast I want to get back to why you were so sort of intrigued by Washington what is it about the the Wizards the organization the team maybe the city what is it that intrigued you and you know made you sort of be willing to even pass up the the sort of the ego of being number one you were like okay I don’t need to be number one I want to go to DC I want to play for the Wizards yeah I mean you know they have such a a young team um I think the the roster is really really good right now um it’s really interesting interesting what they’re building uh I think they’re really trying to Trend the right direction and you know being a a Trailblazer and that is is really something I I take pride in so we were trying to kind of figure out your game because we’ve just seen highlights and I watched some of it and I was like you know what he kind of reminds me a little bit of KD now most of the reports are that you need to work on your offensive game but I was looking at your overtime Elite numbers you shoot some threes how how who do you comp yourself to uh I mean a few players uh you know there’s a lot of players that kind of I’ll say Inspire my game after you know like uh when I was young I used to look a lot at jannas Kevin Durant so tall guys that can you know do pretty much everything on the floor I see that I think people are sleeping on your offensive potential Alex be honest with you because everyone’s just talking about you sort of your defense and then as JP says that your offense is still sort of maybe not where it’s going to be but I see you blocking a shot or getting a rebound dribbling down Court dunking on guys pulling up hitting threes like I think you can do all of that yes sir not for sure I think he shot 30% from the three-point line for overtime Elite I haven’t checked out the Perth stats what brought you to Australia yeah I mean you know before turning pro I mean before going to the draft I wanted to play One Professional year and Australia was just the best option for me to do that uh you know it’s a really tough physical League uh with a fast-paced game and uh you know I think it’s what I needed to take the next step in my game what was your favorite part of Australia and the worst part of Australia my favorite part was probably I mean just the league in general like you know uh the fans are really really you know passionate about their teams um the worst part is that you got really hot sometimes in first what about yeah what about like the snakes and stuff though you ever have a snake in your toilet no there there’s actually none of that stuff uh when you’re into big cities but I think you going to Outbacks you’ll definitely see what you’re looking for stay away from the have basketball teams in the outback looking for they’re not running pickup we’re joined by Alex SAR the Wizards top draft pick went number two overall last night so how close are you with your your now teammate belal kabali the Wizards top pick last year and what’s going on with French basketball like three of the top six guys in the draft last night including yourself uh from France we know balal from France obviously uh wemi like there there’s something going on in the French uh hoop culture right now yeah for sure I mean uh I’ve never met bow before the combine um you know of course uh I saw his games uh I watched his rookie year last year and you know think it’s going to be really nice you know shing shing the court with him and uh as far as FR Talent you know I think there’s more and more coming in the league every year and it’s really really exciting talking to Alex SAR who was the number two pick in the NBA Draft last night just a couple quick questions to kind of get to know you Alex how many languages do you speak uh three French English Okay Spanish French and English who was your favorite NBA player Uh Kevin Durant Kevin Durant what’s the first thing you’re going to buy with your new money uh probably a night place to stay nice what kind of car do you drive right now I don’t I don’t drive you have a license that’s the ultimate Flex are you gonna drive here yes yes I’m I’m playing to game My Life are you gonna get like a sports car or you gonna get like a truck I’ll probably get a comfortable car like an SUV SUV can’t fit into a sports car fit into like I guess they can custom it yeah they could how tall is he 71 foot 71 or 7 Foot how tall actually are you like Barefoot 61 and 3/4 61 3/4 so with sneakers you’re like 71 hey I’m like 58 on a good day are you still growing are you are you gonna tell me something annoying like you’re gonna keep growing get I have no clue who’s the toughest player you faced during your professional career um probably olr brother his brother have you talked to any the or met any other other Wizards players besides B uh yeah um yesterday I was on FaceTime with a couple of them I talk with uh JP um kma and uh Cory so it was pretty nice oh cool have you been have you been playing with like NBA guys like in this in like guys that were already in the league like in the summer just pickup that kind of thing no no no not that many times though really gotcha so what’s going to be the biggest transition for you you think at this next level because you’ve been basically playing professionally for a few years I mean some would argue that it might not be that difficult a transition for you I mean I honestly don’t know uh you know uh everybody say it’s a tough schedule so um I’m really looking forward to starting the season and finding out what’s going to be my biggest suggestion right right what advice has your brother giving you uh just to enjoy the moment you know make the most out of theal opportunity I got and uh and you know don’t take anything for granted I tell you it’s nice as a Wizards fan to have somebody that actually wanted to come to DC that is a good thing to play that’s like really amazing when did it Dawn on you I guess right after the lottery you looked and you said that’s where I want to go I mean yeah you know the Wiz you know for the whole year last season he’s the team I was looking at and hoping I I ended there and uh now I’m we so you know I think uh the universe heard me I you put it out in the universe you manifested it yes sir that’s very cool well stay healthy this summer man hopefully we’ll talk to you uh again soon before Camp okay okay thank you yeah congratulations welcome to DC buddy thank you guys thank you all right take care such a crazy life some of these guys live that become NBA players they leave their families when they’re 13 or 14 years old and then you bounce around I mean he he grows up in France his dad was a pro now he made it seem like it was a lowlevel pro whatever his dad was a professional basketball player yep he goes to Madrid mhm then he comes to Atlanta then he goes to Australia on the way to he has lived with his family probably living with another play think about John living by himself essentially at age 16 in Atlanta before and in Madrid mrid and 14 think about what you were like at 14 cakes I was wildly immature I would not have survived imagine if your family dro you off in Madrid yeah I just live all of a sudden I’m living in Perth we’re big wussies I me I just I wouldn’t be able to hack it we couldn’t do it no not cut out for that sort of Lifestyle you know what I’m cut out for JP living in the BBS you know that’s the way it is in some of these Sports um I know my nephew was a hockey player and could have you know moved to a boarding school to pursue his hockey dreams and chose not to do that right right that’s a big move all right so thanks again to Alex SAR and the Wizards for setting that up uh he’s had a whirlwind obviously last like 12 to 24 hours so very cool of them to join us I think I think it’s interesting that both you and I comps are guys that he kind of pattered his game after and and was inspired by you you thought KD which I get I for some reason Giannis I keep seeing sort of if he turns into anything near those two guys of course it’s home R it’s a freaking home run it’s a grand slam yeah of course that’s that’s what you’re praying for yeah that’s what we hope happens one outter may but I see the potential actually the reason why I go more KD is because Giannis doesn’t really have a jumper I mean he’s kind of developed and he’ll hit a three every now and then but Giannis is Giannis though his body type is not like it most plays like Shaq almost just dominates in the I could just see him going from end to end yeah I don’t know for some reason I could see it hey he brought up both of our guys hope he’s than jannis his brother those are those are good
