the Pelicans traded into the second round of the NBA draft to take Kentucky guard Antonio Reeves and I’m going to tell you why that could be a steal of a pick plus what does David Griffin mean when he pretty high on not as someone you would take in the first round or even the second round and before the second day of the draft started I tweeted out keep an eye on him as an undrafted guy the Pelicans might want to sign well I guess they didn’t think he was going to be there as an undrafted guy and traded into the first round to go and get him I do think this is ultimately a good pick by the Pelicans but let’s start with this let me play you a clip from lock down Kentucky breaking him down a little bit Antonio Reeves from the Kentucky Wildcats is a off ball score that I think you’re going to want to take a closer look at hi my name is Lance doll host of the lockon Kentucky podcast and Reeves was awesome for the Wildcats a season ago he spent his first three years at Illinois State transferred into Kentucky for his senior season his super senior season was a thing of beauty 20 points per game while shooting 51% from the floor and over 44% from three he is has gotten stronger he can finish at the rim with insane efficiency and he can get a bucket from just about anywhere at 6’6 this is a steel in my opinion in the NBA draft you could liken him maybe to a Justin holiday or a Landry shamut but I think Reeves could be more for more on Reeves and the Kentucky Wildcat subscribe to locked on Kentucky on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts there you have it right like this is a guy that does it at all three levels you know the knock on him probably going into the draft is he’s older this is a multi-year college basketball player fiveyear player two with KY in the SEC Illinois State before that but he put up numbers last season over 20 points per game shot from three 44.7% on 5.7 attempts and the dude has some of the best touch I think in this draft the reason he fell down is because he’s not a great defender even though he has good size at 6 foot eight but a bit of a slim frame or sorry not 6 fo8 6’4 if he was 68 we’d be talking entirely differently about him but he has some of the best touch he might have the best mid-range game in this draft and he at least has the best floater you remember etan Moore and those beautiful little floaters that he had you see it here with Antonio Reeves and he is great at that sort of shot and those shots that mid-range shot like that when you break them out sparingly is or or use them selectively I should say is something that will be open but he doesn’t look to only do that he takes them when they’re there the other thing though is he’s talented at the at scoring at The Rim you know he can do it a little bit with both hands but he’s capable of just generating his own shot getting to the basket and scoring one of the things to keep in mind with him is he’s an off ball scorer this is not a point guard this is not someone that’s going to dish out assists to teammates very often or anything like that in fact last season with his high usage rate right LED Kentucky in scoring 1.6 assists he’s a Score first kind of guy which can be good or bad but on the second unit with the Pelicans someone who can just go and get their own shot I don’t really hate that but he does work well off ball too just because you’re a Score first guy doesn’t mean you’re bad off ball he can relocate really well he cuts really well too so you can see him out there on the court alongside Zion Williamson and some of these other players as someone who’s going to be moving around looking to cut to get into the lane get a pass from Zion and score that way you know when you look at him on the defensive side of the ball there’s good measurables there the lateral side to side movement isn’t great that’s going to limit him at the NBA level he’ll be 24 next season to that I do think is part of the problem but this is a guy who knows how to move off ball catch the ball shoot the ball and I do think that’s a pretty good skill to have with this team prioritizing shooting from as many positions as possible I think is a really important thing this was someone I was pretty high on the pelic also didn’t give up much to get him uh we haven’t seen the fin like the final details of the trade they took him 47th overall and it was reported they gave up two future pick swaps so likely second round pick swaps so with the Orlando Magic they’ll get the better of the Pelicans or the magic second round pick they don’t lose anything you don’t lose a second round pick in a pick swap you have one it’ll just be the worst of the two given that they have lesser value than first round picks still re retaining a second round pick is good so in a sense you didn’t give up anything or you didn’t lose anything I should say to go and trade for him so if this is a guy that the Pelicans like that’s great now after drafting Eve Mei yesterday they have two open roster spots more on their salary cap structure in the next segment here you know they have two open roster spots I do not know and I don’t think it’s been reported or anything like that yet that Antonio Reeves is guaranteed one of those roster spots I do think this is a guy that they could put on a two-way deal something like that so he might not count against the salary cap so they could put him on a two-way deal or they could sign him using the new second round exception which you don’t need to do until much later so we’ll see him for sure in summer league with this team him and Jordan Hawkins on the same team is going to be pretty fun to watch there should be a lot of shooting a lot of scoring for the Pelicans here how they’re going to sign him how they plan to use him just yet I’m not sure if we truly know that might be you know a decision to be made later but Antonio Reeves your newest Pelican a day where we thought they could be quiet but there’s potential that they were going to trade up you know they did they got a guy that I liked pretty happy with the move that the Pelicans made here and we’ll see where they go but this was a good pick keep in mind it’s it’s a second round pick it’s a second round pick so this is not someone who is expected to come in light it up to do anything like that to you know be a starter necessarily though they’ve had some success with that keep that in mind too but overall pretty happy with what the way this kind of out for the Pelicans going getting their guy and a guy that particularly like and told you told you I even said it on lock down Pelicans keep an eye on this guy ended up what Pelicans did so coming up next David Griffin in his press conference yesterday said the Pelicans aren’t going to be an apron team what what’s that mean does that mean they’re being cheap it means actually potentially the opposite potentially the opposite might meant they spent a lot I’ll explain let’s get into the salary cap structure the collective bargaining agreement the luxury tax all of that that’s coming up here next numbers heavy segment coming up here next in today’s the comments from David Griffin you know I got asked about this on ESPN Radio on Thursday and it needs to be explained because what he said wasn’t a bad thing he didn’t say anything that was a bad thing at all but I I know people might view it as that almost want to twist it into that to kind of scare people and that this team’s bad no they’re not great but they won 49 games that’s something what he said though was do not expect the Pelicans to be an apron team what’s that mean do you know what the first and the second apron in the in the salary Camp structure is because there’s levels to this so let’s break it down a little bit and what it exactly means there’s a couple of levels to the salary cap the first one is the soft cap you can just if you you’re under that you can spend up to it in free agency or on your own players just spend money once you hit that once you go above the soft cap you have to use exceptions to sign players you don’t have cap space so you can’t just go sign someone for $20 million you can use the mid-level exception of which there are three and we’ll talk about two of them in a second you can use the by annual exception potentially every other year by annual you can use the veteran minimum exception you can use something called bird rights to resign your own players early bird rights there’s all that stuff you use exceptions when you’re over the soft cap once you get beyond that you get from the soft cap to the luxury tax once you’re in the luxury tax now you’re paying dollar for dollar or more on the money that you’re spending and that gets shared around all the teams that aren’t in the luxury tax the luxury tax this year is at $171 million we’re going to round we’re going to round to make this easier $171 million right now before they get to the luxury tax and this counts Eve me’s number in it with the 13 guaranteed contracts that they or the 13 contracts they have on the books the Pelicans have a total salary of 178 my estimate is they have about $1 13.5 million before they hit the luxury tax right now $7 million above the luxury tax so beyond the luxury tax so you’re in the luxury tax $7 million is What’s called the first apron that starts at $178 half million beyond the first apron is that then the second apron that’s at right around $189 and5 million the Pelicans have about $21 million to go before they hit the first apron they could they would need to spend $22 million in some capacity or bring in salary right to hit that second apron that’s a lot of room because when you’re making trades you have to send salary out too it has to match so if the Pelicans are trading for someone like Trey young it means they’re sending out salary really close to his salary cap number so it’s not like they don’t just trade for him because they’re being cheap so here’s why you want to avoid why you want to avoid the first or the second apron because restrictions get in place once you hit those levels so once you’ve spent so much money the NBA doesn’t want that they want parody it becomes really difficult to build your team out when you hit the first apron about $179 million right you’re not allowed to acquire a player and a sign in trade you’re not allowed to use a pre-existing trade exception don’t worry about that one you’re not allowed to take more money back in a trade so you there’s a little bit of wiggle room with it but say you’re trading for a $35 million player you need to send out more than $35 million you can’t send $30 million out that limits what you’re able to do you’re not allowed to sign a player waved during the regular season that had pre-existing salary of $13 million or more so the buyout Market becomes really Limited limited there and you’re only allowed the use of the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception so the mid-level exception if you’re in the first a apron you can only use the $5.2 million midlevel exception if the Pelicans are just a luxury tax team just in the luxury tax say they’re in at $5 million you’re not at that first apron level you can use the non-t taxpayer mid-level exception which is 2.4 Mill sorry TW 12.4 million now the second apron and then we’ll go back to why David Griffin said this and why it’s actually a good thing so all of the stuff from the first apron is also there but it gets even more restrictive you’re not allowed to aggregate contracts sent out you want to bring in a $30 million player you can’t trade a player that makes 20 and10 million you can’t do that what you also can’t trade future first round picks Beyond a certain year they just get Frozen you can’t trade a future first round pick seven years out it limits what you’re capable of doing and you don’t have the taxpayer mid-level exception or anything like that anymore so you’re really limited when you look at a team like the Boston Celtics they’re in the second apron their team is what it is the only way they can add to that team is by literally just signing minimum contracts and draft picks that’s it nothing else you look at a team like the Denver Nuggets who just traded Reggie Jackson to the Charlotte Hornets along with three draft picks so that they could drop below the apron so that they could make other moves it really limits you what you’re capable of doing so right now the Pelicans have room to go into the luxury tax they have about 13.63 7 million say they use the full mid-level exception that 12.4 they sign one or two other guys to De they make a trade that brings some more salary back one of the things that you hear a lot about that freaks people out is something called being hard capped don’t worry about that when people say oh it triggers a hard cap scenario it’s totally fine you know the Pelicans have access to the biannual exception this year and the mid-level exception let’s just say they use both of those that puts them into the luxury tax if you use the non-t taxpayer mid-level exception and then you later go into the luxury tax you become hard capped at the first apron you are literally not allowed to go over that you are stuck at that number when David Griffin says we’re not going to be a luxury we’re not going to be an apron team that could mean we’re going to be a we’re going to be a luxury tax team and we’re going to use the full tax non-t taxpayer mid-level exception so it’s he’s basically in a sense saying potentially we’re going to spend money and we’re going to hit a point where we just can’t go above this number because of the rules works for me like that means you’re deep you’re about $7 million into the luxury tax that’s them paying for the first time so when he says we’re not going to be an apron team this team has no need and wouldn’t even get close to going to the second apron in the first place even if they wanted to they likely weren’t going to get to the first apron so I’m not worried when David Griffin says this and if you know how the salary cap works not even does confusing and it takes a little bit to kind of get used to it that also means that they might be spending they’re planning to spend the full non-t taxpayer mid-level exception $12.4 million they did not do that last year they haven’t done that the past couple of years but now it’s saying we’re not going to be at we’re not going to be an apron team because we literally are not allowed to be but it he never said they won’t be in the luxury tax the way I kind of view it is $5 million5 million into the luxury tax is probably what they’re going to do as of right now that means they have they can spend about $18.5 million dollar more on salaries than when where they are currently however they go about doing that but David Griffin saying we’re not an apron team isn’t really that big of a deal to me that’s not a concern if they get hard capped I don’t expect them you know to have gone above that number anyway and it also would have been really really hard where they are it would not have been easy for them to get into that apron territory either and by staying below that it means they have more flexibility to sign players the other thing that it does is it lets you have flexibility during the season by not hitting that apron and being below it you still have access to things maybe they don’t use the full mid-level exception right now but you you you retain that throughout the season so maybe all of a sudden you you know you trade for someone or you someone gets waved and you can sign that person using that money during the season by having that flexibility think about the trade rules we talked about right you can’t send out more money than you bring back this team is below the apron and at the trade deadline is like oh hey we have a chance to upgrade and get this player now they have the ability to take more money back in a trade than they would have otherwise it gives you more flexibility at the trade deadline and isn’t exactly limiting David Griffin’s saying we’re not going to be an apron team does not worry me or scare me it does not necessarily mean that they are being cheap at all it might mean they’re actually spending kind of the most they could spend this summer which is an encouraging sign they also might not do that they also might not be a luxury tax team if they’re not you will hear me rip them apart on this show I will call them cheap and I will explain that but let’s not borrow a problem from the future that hasn’t occurred yet and let’s see what they do it’s still early in the off season there’s still a lot of time we’ll talk more Brandon Ingram trades next week because it doesn’t seem like anything’s getting done right now so more on that in the future but David Griffin’s comments the other day don’t really make me worried or anything like that about what this team is planning to do this off season so may maybe I’ll put a link out to the the Pelican salary cap sheet that I have so you can kind of see some of the money here and what it all means um if you’re interested in that let me know in the comments down below I don’t mind sharing that with anyone it’s not like it’s a secret or anything so that’s kind of where it stands with the salary cap I hope I explained that somewhat well I know it’s confusing and it’s tough without doing like showing you things but given that the show is both on YouTube and in audio only form I try and just use my words paint a picture with words here so I hope I did that a little bit well or at least explained why that those comments from David Griffin don’t stress me out to hear and talk about okay enough from that let’s get into the Trey Murphy extension he’s eligible for it right now going into the final year of his rookie deal he’s GNA get paid he’s going to get paid you know before we get into the numbers behind it because I have an estimate here and it’s based off of two other NBA cops and it’s an approximation is is we’re going to see a lot of sticker shock there’s just going to be so much sticker shock with the money going up in the NBA that means the salary cap Rises that salary cap number that we talked about you know the the luxury tax threshold the you know the luxury tax number it’s all based off of revenue from the league so as they sign some new TV deals which means more money coming into the league that means that salary cap number goes up which means salaries then go up right this is how everyone eats here in the NBA so you’re going to see some numbers that just make your eyes pop out of your head you’re going to see an NBA player making $80 million a year at some point in the near future that’s a lot of money Trey Murphy is going to get paid and a couple you know 10 years ago we looked at this number and been like what the heck but this is just how it’s going to be he’s maybe going to get a contract that pays him more than Deonte Murray does right Murray is a former Allstar but it happens to you know whenever you sign your contract it’s indexed off that first year you know it can go up it can go down there can be raises or declines in it involved but that’s just kind of how it works so there’s going to be a lot of sticker shock but it’s all relative to the salary cap and to other players So eventually everyone will kind of be on the same page same level with that sort of thing so there’s two NBA comps I think for Trey Murphy’s deal that make a ton of sense the first one is Jaden McDaniels from the Minnesota Timberwolves last offseason I believe he signed a 5year $36 million deal now that’s a lot of money he was on a good team they finished third in the Western Conference this year he finished second by the way in Defensive Player of the Year voting or was it did he let me pull him up again here Jaden McDaniels or was he just on the second defensive team I can’t remember now um let me pull up he was on the all defensive second team so he’s he’s won an award he’s considered a very good defender in the NBA last season before he got the extension 12.1 points per game shot 40% from three on 3.4 attempts you know two 3.9 rebounds 1.9 assists 12 points on 9.1 shot attempts you know that’s a pretty decent contract for a guy like that who’s not an elite score but gives you very very good defense 136 divided 5 it’s an average annual value of $27.2 million the other guy that I think you got to look at is Devin vasel from the San Antonio Spurs he signed where did my numbers go 5 years $146 million this is someone who for his you know where’d he go last year averaged 19.5 points per game shot 37% from three not an elite number on 6.6 attempts that’s 19 a half points on 15.5 shot attempts 3.8 rebounds four assists one a little over one steal per game it’s a good player you know that has an average annual value we said it was 146 divided by five I’m not doing math in my head $ 29.2 million Trey probably should fall somewhere in between those guys now there’s a couple of ways you can do his contract but let’s say you’re just going to throw a bag at him be like no player options no team options just a straightup contract 5 years here’s the money right Trey Murphy last season 14.8 points per game he did it while shooting 38% from three on almost eight attempts per game 4.9 rebounds that got better after his mom called him out and improved as the season went on 2.2 assists about a steal per game and half a block per he’s also a good free throw shooter some of his numbers are slightly down from the year before as he was dealing with you know coming back from that miniscus injury he shot slightly better his sophomore year at 40.6 6% but for his career is a 39.2% shooter from three on high volume those are really good numbers his per 36 minute numbers last season basically 18 points per game six rebounds 2.6 assists and almost in over 3 and a half made threes almost 10 three-point attempts per game the type of player you want to put next to Zion Williamson my guess if we’re kind of triangulating the numbers between Jaden McDaniels and Devon fa would be 5 years $140 million I think it’s going to be something like that so that’s what I’m expecting him to get made about $28 million per year I don’t think he’ll go under 25 per year you know maybe you shorten it and you go four years at like $110 million something like that but I would assume 5 years 140 you know $28 million would make him the fourth highest paid player on the team that’s basically double what herb Jones is making but the shooting that he gives you is just Elite deep threes too really spacing the court this is someone that they want to be a starter next year and I think they’re trying to figure out how to make that happen something to consider with that too because you can’t really pay him that to come off of the bench it also does mean in the future they’re going to have to look at maybe moving CJ McCullum or Brandon Ingram you know depending on what goes on with Brandon Ingram this summer and who knows more on that next week so that’s I think where you’re you’re estimating his contract somewhere in that range if it’s dramatically below that that’s a huge win for the team it’s you know significantly above that I don’t think he’s a full Max guy the defense isn’t there for him to be a full Max guy but the offense is definitely in there for him to get a freaking bag and I think he will I think it’s going to be five for 140 we don’t need any player team options just straight up sign him that contract while lot in two three years is going to look fantastic if he’s a starter and pushing you know I don’t know if he’s an All-Star level player he could be but I think for being your third fourth your your third starter at that point that kind of money he’s going to have a a very valuable contract around the leap that does you no good unless you’re going to trade him by the way you know we talk about herb Jones’s contract being a steel like sure that’s great helps with team building but also that’s more valuable when you can trade those things but they’re not going to trade herb at least not right now and they’re not going to trade Trey Murphy either that’s the contract that I expect too rich for you do you think he’ll get more than that let me know in the comments down below that though I think is more important than any free agent they’re really going to sign given that they’re kind of limited to that $ 122.4 million non-t taxpayer mid-level exception because of the stuff we went over in the second segment of the show so
