[Tim MacMahon] This move positions the Mavs to offer a significant part of the $12.9M nontaxpayer midlevel exception to Derrick Jones Jr.

THJ + 3 2nd round picks for Grimes and DJJ is an absolute home run. Nico is on an all-time heater

Awful deal. 12M for DJJ is such an overpay. He’s worth like 3-4M at most. So limited on offense. Defense is okay at the POA but he’s an awful rebounder and gets bullied a lot because of a lack of strength. And we’re giving him 12M lol. You’d think these mfs would learn from giving Grant Williams 12M last year but they’re so deluded.

Anyone have the math where we at total salary wise and what we can offer djj? Or do we need to move another salary?

Edit: I have no idea if I’m right, but according to https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/DAL.html our salary was at 173M b4 THJ trade. So now we will be at 12M less than that – 161M.

I believe the first apron is 179M so we should be able to offer full MLE 12M+ for DJJ now.

Also not sure but I think we created a 12M trade exception for salary swapping later in a future trade. Not sure rules on how it can be used vs where we are with the cap but I think we can go get Grant (for example) from the blazers now with less salary swap after we finish signing djj

If we don’t offer the full MLE to him, can we use the remainder of the MLE on another player?

I would happily do Naji instead for what’s looking like one third the price. Not ready to pay full MLE for one year of bump.

He’s had some misses too so he’s not perfect. Christian wood and grant williams
