League sources tell The Stein Line that the Dallas Mavericks, with some newfound financial flexibility after securing the Tim Hardaway Jr.-to-Detroit trade that I wrote about Tuesday (see the full Twitter thread here), are another team intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson once he makes it to free agency.

Thompson is said to be seeking a three-year deal at a minimum. The cap space teams are believed to prefer shorter contract structures than Thompson covets but can offset that with higher dollar amounts than teams like the Nuggets and Mavericks can muster.

Assuming this will be widely viewed as a terrible idea. I think it ultimately comes down to money as talks have been KCP (around 20M) would see a bigger contract than Klay. If Klay came to you and said he’d sign for the full MLE would you do it? Even if it meant losing out on DJJ. Personally think Klay may be cooked but he did shoot 39%, 41%, 38% from 3 the last 3 years. Could they view Grimes as DJJ replacement if they goes this route?

  2. LordsDontWorry

This isn’t a bad idea because he can easily be our best 3pt shooter with volume. The issue is the cost vs the problems it solves. We still need a 3rd ball handler and consistent scorer behind Kyrie and Luka and Klay wouldn’t solve either

    Edit: grammar

This is a bit perplexing as I assumed the money that THJ opened for us would go straight to DJJ. It’s possible Nico sees Grimes as a DJJ replacement instead of a Josh Green replacement. Also possible that they think DJJ will get a bigger offer in FA that they can’t match.

  4. ElChiChiPapa

I’m not against it but what’s the splash Nico I know you’re cooking

  5. OrganicHunt952

Maybe the money we are able to offer DJJ is still short of other offers? We’re only able to offer him like 13m right?

  6. Simple_Wait_7286

Klay is basically another THJ at this point when it comes to taking terrible shots lol.

And he’s no longer the great defender he was, although better than THJ.

  7. icrywithmycat

giving 34 yo klay a 3 year contract, idk man. ill trust nico but i hope this is some kind of smoke screen

  8. Initial_Alive

No Klay, unless he takes a spot as the 8/9th man

DJJ brought so much heart and toughness (especially alongside PJ and Gaff)
Can’t let that man walk, no way. can’t do it

  9. TZBlueIce

I’m in if it can be done as a S&T that allows us to keep DJJ. I’m good on giving Klay the MLE over DJJ for sure though.

Someone who can hit 3’s at a high clip and make fts, ultimately I think we are priced out and would hate to lose djj

  11. jfrodriguez1983

I’m not gonna question Nico. I think he’s interested up to a certain price. First it was the Grant rumors, then the KCP rumors, and now this. This probably turns out to be nothing, but this shows that Nico is exploring many different options to help improve this team.

  12. Youngrepboi

I bet DJJ has an offer somewhere else and Nico knows about it.

Unless it’s cheap and he’s cool with being the 6th man, which he can easily win 6th man of the year, I wouldn’t do it.

I like our starting 5 and I wanna see how that 5 grows together having a full off season together. If he’s down to be out 6th man, that addresses a lot of our problems in the playoffs and Luka will find him open a lot for threes

  14. Annual-Shape7156

Let’s see what he wants before we all say no. With a player like Klay that’s done so much for GS it’s not unrealistic to believe GS would work with him to get him to the team he wants to play for.

  15. PM_ME_UR_RESPECT

Guys, I just found out Klay was the best free throw shooter in the league last year.

    WE NEED THIS MAN.

  16. mypersonalbrowsing

His defense has gotten terrible but he will air it out with those open 3s.

  17. Plenty-Engineer-8051

If we can keep djj then yes, klay if past his slump could be the 3rd scorer we need

  18. Is he much better than Tim at this point in his career? He has the ability to put up 8 3s and miss every single one. His defense is questionable at this point also.

  19. anon641414

Klay seems like he’s on the verge of really falling off a cliff. Last thing you want is a guy clanking 3’s all game but still commanding an outsized amount of shot attempts because of contract and past reputation.

  20. Stonethecrow77

No thank you… His 3 Ball would be wonderful… But, basketball is much more than that and we just saw Boston put on a Clinic of what a team looks like with 5 players with very active feet…

You already have some defensive limits, why add more?

If Luka chose to consistently give great effort on Defense, that changes. But, he has too much load on offense… Klay won’t change that.

That money could be spent better.

  21. Andrew0409

Klays problem is that he was elite as a shooter and defender before but he isn’t anymore. He didn’t even shoot horribly at 38% this year. Just not his usual 40% plus. He also started to shoot better when he wasn’t forcing it. He would probably be a good shooter for us with how much defense collapses on Luka and Kyrie.

I just worry about his defense. He’s been a step slower since his injury.

  22. JKiddBurner

“Financial flexibility” immediately after going to the finals?

    And we still have doubters?

  23. TreyMcnally

This would be an amazing offseason move; buying low on a future hall of famer

  24. RedKozak84

I think a lot of people here are dismissing the fact that our young players will improve. Hopefully, what we’ll see this next season is a big level up in team and individual performances. I don’t necessarily think big moves are needed… We solved the THJ problem. I’d keep DJJ.
Would I take Klay? I would be dumb to say no, but I wouldn’t mess with the team too much to enable it.

  25. Putrid_Ad_2256

I’m not convinced that he would provide value to this team.

  26. Feuertotem

He is finished as a star player. Now is a finished Klay Thompson still a better shooter than most players? Of course.
But will he move the needle? Very much depends on the price.

  27. elfonmyshelf

For the right price he could be fantastic. Celtics beat us by eliminating corner threes and forcing threes from the top. With Klay we have an answer for that type of defense.

  28. 1) Re-sign DJJ
    2) Green and 2 first round picks for Cam Johnson
    3) Get Klay or someone similar on a vet min

    New roster:

    PG – Luka, Exum

    SG – Irving, Hardy, Klay(?)

    SF – Cam Johnson, DJJ

    PF – PJ, Maxi, O-Max

    C – Lively, Gafford

That’s a championship team right there.

  29. JeremyJammDDS

He would fit great. Doesn’t need to defend like he used to, just slightly above average would work. Make 3s and we’re rolling.

Too many people trying to get the team like the Celtics. It is damn near impossible to have a complete lineup that can score and defend across the board.

  30. Freakscorpio

I don’t want him to leave Golden State ……. But if he comes here….?!

  31. DustNeverSleeps

Depth is important, but there is always a caveat. Defense is important, it may motivate him getting a change of scenery.

  32. LogansGambit

I want Klay badly. So many people said he had a bad year last year…his numbers were better than the last title GSW had. Also, his “bad year” is miles better than what THJ’s was, and he provides better defense, as well as the biggest factor: winning championship experience. We need that in Dallas for Luka.

Between Kyrie and Luka I could easily see Klay shooting 40% from 3 again, and with PJ and DJJ back he wouldn’t have as much focus being a POA defender either.

  33. Klay as a 3rd option with Luka and Kyrie as playmakers would be great. His defence is still ok I think. He had to force a lot of shots at GSW, since he was more or less their 2nd option and they also don’t have playmaker as good as Luka.

There were times when teams just ignored our role players on 3point line, but they couldn’t do that with Klay. You know he’s shooting, if he’s open and he can also hit ar good %. And he’s not a terrible defender, like our only good shooters in THJ and Hardy were.

The only thing that would worry me is the money. How much would he want? Can we even afford him? Do we have to lose some improtant player?
