What do you think of trading for Robert Williams III as the backup big?

"The Portland Trailblazers are expected to take calls on Robert Williams" per HPbasketball.

Good rim protector, great lob threat. Young – 26 years old. Cheap contract – $12 mil/year next 2 years.

I think he would be an upgrade over J Will for the backup big because of his rim protection & size. He also has mobility & can switch onto small guards. Defensive highlights 2022.

The major concern is his injury history. Only played 6 games last year & 35 games in 2023. Most games played was 61 in 2022.

What do you guys think?

The fit and salary makes sense. However, you’re right with his health.

Because of the talent, age, and contract, he’s my number 1 target. I get the injury stuff but he’s a perfect backup center.

He’ll be 27 by the time the season starts. If he were healthy enough to play the majority of the next two seasons, this would be a great contract.

If Presti wanted to take that gamble, I’d be ok with it. Would probably take us attaching a first round pick if it didn’t work out in OKC and we had to salary dump him somewhere next summer.

  4. Not opposed to it.

We need someone to backup Chet, going into next year with Chet, JWill, Dieng, and 12 guards, is insane.

Honestly, I’d be open to trading for Timelord and Mitchell Robinson, both combined make ~26 million.

We’re talking about paying Isaiah Hartenstein 25 million…I’d rather have Timelord and Mitch for the same price so we have defense in depth in case any one person is injured (Chet + Isaiah vs Chet + Timelord + Mitch).

  5. Not worth it given his injury history, unfortunately.

Depending on price, this is my favorite realistic trade target. I think he’d be a nice fit as a backup big and could occasionally play alongside Chet.

He’s got probably the coolest nickname in the league, so I’m just in on that alone

Im just scared of his health, but the rest is insanely goos

As a celtics and thunder fan, this would be incredible, however his health concerns are no joke.

Actually a really good fit. I’m guessing Portland’s priority is to get off Ayton’s contract if possible (and OKC could even consider him if Portland sends enough assets with him—$34mil then $35mil) but Rob Williams would be perfect if they’ll take a few 2nds for him.

Absolutely, yes he has health concerns. But you’re not asking him to play 30mins a night Chet is the centre. His contract will be under the mid level exception with the new cap spike with the contract ending when the team gets expensive.

  12. No thanks, this guy hasn’t played a healthy season in the last 3 years

  13. Thetallshot

Plenty of reports about his atheticism being diminished by his knee injuries and also him being a “throw in” in the trade from Boston reinforces that alarm IMO.

  14. His contract isn’t bad, so I’d be willing to do it despite the health risks. When he’s healthy he’s very solid

  15. I would absolutely celebrate 20 minutes a night of Time Lord

100% on board only concern for me is health

Pretty sure this question was robbed from Nick and Jacob’s Bleacher Report update earlier.

  18. We ain’t asking him to start so I don’t see why not.

  19. New-Candy-800

I didn’t realize his contract was so reasonable. I am 100% behind this, given his knees are in satisfactory shape.

I watched him in boston and he was great. but the constant injuries are very concerning

I think people are wrong thinking we need a center. Chet and Jaylin are fine at center. What we need is a stretch 4. Have to be able to stay in the 5 out offense. Lauri Markkanen is still the best possible fit imo.

  21. ImHeem012

I don’t see us making a move for a big. The draft is doubling down on our small ball/ 5 out style of play I think we have one more move for someone who can start at the 4 and we’re done outside of minimum contracts to fill out the back end of the roster

I don’t think it’d take too much so it’s a risk I’d definitely be willing to take.

Do it. He’d be amazing on this team. Huge fan of TimeLords game.
