What can the Phoenix Suns do on Day 1 of free agency?

What can the Phoenix Suns do on Day 1 of free agency?

was a story this morning on the ringer and I clicked on it because it was it directly related to the Phoenix Suns and the headline of the story was is the NBA’s second apron preventing a mess or creating one and it was a long story about the you know and most of it if you’re a semi-educated Suns fan you’re aware of the second apron the fact that the suns are over the second apron and how it’s going to make things difficult when free agency starts on Sunday because there’s just not much the Phoenix Suns can do there was a quote in that story Kell that that stood out to me and again not a surprise for those of us who kind of know how this works one rival team executive on the sun said quote they are as hosed as you can be for a team with two of the best players in the league close quote and I think about that quote because on Sunday at 3:00 free agency in the NBA begins and you legal tampering call it whatever you want but at that point you can begin negotiating and you can actually reach agreements now we we’ve talked earlier in the show we think the Suns will be busy but it’s going to be a limited busy because there’s just only so much they can do there’s it’s we’re like Royce O’Neal deal you’re 48 hours away now I know it’s time to get going Tik Tok tick talk right like like we when we mapped out the show today and and I I’ll say it now we deliberately kept a segment open yeah and part of me was thinking I just like something something’s got to happen with Royce O’Neal before Sunday at 3 o’cl let’s leave a segment open just in case just in case something comes down with Royce O’Neal because we think it might but the rest of the not the rest of the league I don’t think it sound like everyone’s going to have this Feeding Frenzy coming up on Sunday because other teams are limited too but the Phoenix Suns are GNA have to to a certain extent gonna have to sit back and watch some of the other teams have a little fun on Sunday because there’s just not a whole lot of fun the Suns can have when free agency opens because of this tax apron right yes and part of me is like this is what you guys wanted when they get tapped because there are other teams in their position don’t get me wrong there are other teams that are screwed this summer if they really want to upgrade their team Minnesota did one of the most fascinating things in the draft Bernay where they did what we talked about with the Suns 2031 unprotected first round pick they they don’t move up they get the eighth overall pick for that and a swap and select Dillingham because they didn’t really have any other way to upgrade their roster there are other teams across the league that are dealing with this but at the same time this is a team that the windy story we going to blow through the second apron it was like I like yeah we’re going to show how like this doesn’t so they are the second apron team that everyone thinks of that gets that identity but they they can upgrade their team but they can just do it in a very limited amount of ways which we’ve highlighted a lot of but other teams yeah are not in that position and that’s kind of where we’re going here because because while the suns are once again kind of limited I mean again unless they explore the trade market and this is where we talked about this yesterday the day before yesterday kind of the ace up the sleeve of the Phoenix Suns is Matt tum the new executive that they hired in the offseason whose specialty is said to be very creative ways of looking at the cap and working things in maneuver vering things and perhaps he’s got something kind of really cool up his sleeve when it comes to how the suns are going to approach this but as of right now what we are expecting is a few vet minimum guys because that’s what the Suns can do and then sitting watching waiting and holding our breath to a certain extent see which Western Conference team or teams are going to be the one who does the thing that makes you go uh and I I’m going to start here just because I know there been a lot of conversation about him and them today I want to start with Paul George and just and the LA Clippers specifically and trying to figure out how much should we fear them depending on what happens with Paul George because it seems like that’s really the swing point for the start of the off season isn’t it what happens with him yes you know my rule with the Clippers I’m not fearing them in any way even if Paul George is back but they are a team where if you do still fear them if Paul George leaves you can now take them a lot less seriously because it’s not like they have the capabilities to bring in someone to replace a Paul George the team that got speculated about a bit and then there was some push back like Philly might not do it is the 76ers because they’re the team with a projected room according to Bobby marks of $53 million in cap room and they’ve got embiid and Maxi to build around but that’s the first sort of domino we’re waiting for here does Paul George go into his player option and sign a big time extension or does he decline that player option and become a free agent he’s sort of one of the guys that we’re waiting for but let let me set the table here for you bernzy you’ve got a handful of teams that are either slightly above the Suns definitively below the Suns or right around the Suns range in the west where depending on if they get involved in this trade market which is going to be busy they could move up a lot OKC 11 tradable first round picks and seven tradable swaps Clippers don’t really have much to work with the Mavericks have the salaries Tim Hardway Jr that moved by them this morning by the way Quint Grimes went through a tough year of injuries and didn’t look like himself but he was a player for the Knicks before he got traded uh they have two tradable first and three swaps as well the Lakers have a lot of big salaries they have three tradable first round picks and five swaps the Warriors we mentioned the Chris Paul angle earlier two firsts six swaps they can move and then the Kings have some salaries Harrison Barnes Kevin herder three first five swaps which team there gave you the heie gbes for easy okay C and and why because they are because they are it’s them in Minnesota at the top and you think they become even more of a because I think they have one of the smartest basketball Executives in the Free World and he’s just a guy he’s got he’s kind of like I’m trying to think of the GM back in the Heyday like like back in his Heyday if you did a deal with Bill belich of the New England Patriots you were getting screwed if you’re doing a baseball trade right now at the Tampa Bay Rays what are you doing you’re you’re getting screwed there’re just some teams you just don’t don’t mess with them he knows more than you do they know more than you do they’ve they’ve got a crystal ball you don’t Oklahoma City to me is that organization where where I just I am so scared of their ability to pre on the dumb weak people in the NBA all they’ve shown is that you should get talented large ball handlers guys who are able to get and what does everyone allow them to do in the draft lets nicoa topic slip he’s going to be a red shirt and he’s a large point guard who can do a lot of things now Josh giddy has a replacement instantly once that kid gets healthy and then they get AJ Mitchell one of everyone’s favorite sleepers in the draft who’s a b it’s like why do you guys keep letting them get these guys I don’t fear the Clippers as much that that you’re right that really has lost some teeth for me um is Dallas a move away do you think if they so let me go through names these are the names that everyone’s watching there’s there’s Jimmy Butler is one for sure Brandon Ingram Trey young or dejonte Murray Darius Garland it doesn’t seem like Donovan Mitchell’s going anywhere there’s Zack LaVine Bruce Brown picked up his player option today he is going to get traded at some point here just wear and then our old friend cam Johnson as well is there a name where you pluged them into the Mavericks or the Lakers or the Warriors the Kings or OKC where you’re like o I don’t like that at all uh a name I wouldn’t say there’s a name specifically um I I I think Brandon Ingram is the one who’s most likely to be somewhere else well no Brandon Ingram and dejonte Murray or Trey young are three guys that are like guaranteed to be somewhere else when this thing is all said and done um I would put the Mavericks as the team that I probably fear the second most I’m completely over the Lakers thing I’m not worried about them at all not at all the team that I haven’t figured out whether I should be worried about is is the Golden State Warriors I I don’t think I am I I I think that they’re but there’s there’s something about their unwavering commitment to try every year that is hard Draymond was it totally threw a wrench in their season they were really good at this in the second half of the year once they got the clay thing figured out Off the Bench does clay come back we’ll see but to me I think what if you’re a Suns fan I think what you’re worried about is Lakers Warriors and Kings keep an eye on those three teams because I think the suns are comfortably in a top six spot right now those are three teams I don’t have comfortably in a top six spot but if they make an addition by the way the Lakers we were talking about this earlier me and Jamal were like them getting dton connect at 17 was outrageous like they just get a plug andplay shooter he’s their best shooter right now them falling to 17 outrageous keeping ey on those types of moves for those teams thanks
