out of the NBA where the Hawks are trading Deonte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans Murray Atlanta is going to receive a package that includes two first round picks Larry n Jr and Dyson Daniels jante ladies and gentlemen the NBA offseason is officially underway because the New Orleans Pelicans just agreed to a crazy trade with the Atlanta Hawks that is mindboggling it completely changes everything for both teams and it’s involving a player that we’ve been speculating to get traded for quite some time now I wanted to take a moment to thank you guys from the Bott of my heart yesterday we hit now that we got all that out of the way you the [Music] [Music] intro Mike cheuck 1212 what’s going on everybody the New Orleans Pelicans rebuild hasn’t gone according to plan if you revisit the summer of 2019 there was once a time where everybody was laughing at the Los Angeles Lakers for the hall that they gave up for Anthony Davis they traded Brandon Ingram Lonzo ball Josh Hart re first round picks and a pick swap in order to get ad the Pelicans were in Prime position to rebuild around Zion Williamson who was considered to be the next coming of LeBron James so what would end up happening with those players well Lonzo ball would have one of the greatest turnarounds we’ve ever seen completely remaking his jump shot he would play for the Pelicans for two seasons and then sign a contract with the Chicago Bulls before getting injured after 35 games and we really never saw him again Josh Hart played briefly for the Pelicans before getting traded Brandon Ingram’s currently on the Pelicans but they aren’t really expected to extend him and with their draft picks they selected Jackson Hayes who is currently a Laker nikil Alexander Walker who is no longer with the team DD lzada herb Jones and Dyson Daniels who we’re about to get to in just a second the Pelicans have been kind of a mess during the Zion Williamson era there’s been a huge question of whether or not Zion Williamson even wants to be on the Pelicans throughout his career there but David Griffin and Company have been Relentless as ever trying to build the perfect team around Zion and two Zion’s credit for the very first time in his career he was fully healthy he played in 70 games averaged 23 points per game dished five assists per game and shot 57% from the field but at the conclusion of the regular season David Griffin made it known that he wasn’t really impressed disappointed to be uh doing this today I think the 49 wins that you alluded to um are part of several things that happened this year that would have led you believe we’d be playing deep into the summer at times very large chunks of the season for months at a time where we had the second best net rating in the league and were it not for Boston we would have looked like the best team in the league for stretches and I also think we had stretches where you could see we had a lot of room for growth and a lot of improvement we needed to make there’s so many positives we take out of the season it’s really unfortunate this season ended in the way it did you’d like a season to Crescendo to a moment that lets everybody know how good your season really was although David Griffin made great points in the first part of the seit interview the main thesis of the interview comes at the conclusion of the first two minutes it’s a very competitive conference and so I I think whereas in the past we’ve always aired on the side of continuity um and our takeaway has always been let’s see this group healthy I think we’ve seen it enough I think we had some really really good opportunity to see Zion play a career high in games I think we saw it for segments of time well enough to understand that we’ve got a lot of work to do the Pelicans have a major situational defense problem I mean they went 0 and 26 when trailing in the fourth quarter in six of those games they were leading by 20 plus points and lost and a lot of pelicans fans don’t really know who to blame at this point originally the thought was that they were going to explore a trade with Brandon Ingram because they didn’t believe that Brandon Ingram deserved a 4-year $28 million Max currently the team teams that are interested in Brandon Ingram are the Philadelphia 76ers because they have $60 million in cap space while the Cavaliers also have the opportunity to trade for Ingram if they want to break up the core of Donovan Mitchell Darius Garland Evan Mobley and Jared Allen the Atlanta Hawks were also another team mentioned for Brandon Ingram and the Atlanta Hawks could desperately use a player of Brandon Ingram’s caliber to put next to try young during the 2020 to 2021 season this team made a magical run in the playoffs I mean they beat the Knicks in a gentleman’s sweep in the first round they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers and ruined Ben Simmons career in the second round and they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals where they would lose to the eventual NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks it was a magical season where Nate McMillan took over for head coach Lloyd Pierce and in a season where they finished top 10 in offensive rating and 21st in defensive rating so they decided to run it back the very next season and in the very next season they would finish second in the NBA in offensive rating but 26 in the NBA in defensive ratings so the philosophy was if they were able to get a two-way guard to pair with Trey young then maybe that would minimize some of their issues and they can make a run to the NBA finals so they swung a very aggressive trade for dejonte Murray giving up Danilo ginari three first round picks and a pick swap to get dejonte Murray and jock landale and the results weren’t really the greatest I mean it was more of the same for the Atlanta Hawks they essentially gave up all these assets to become the same team in the 20 22 to 2023 season the Hawks still finished seventh in offensive rating but they would finish 22nd in defensive rating and then this past season with Quinn Snyder as their head coach they finished 27th in defensive rating and 12th in offensive rating so it’s like they gave up all these assets for Deonte Murray and it literally did nothing for them they finished with the number one overall pick in the NBA draft but the good news is they were able to sign Deonte Murray to a really good contract extension I mean dejonte Murray is getting paid an average of $28.5 million a year until the conclusion of the 2027 to 2028 season where he has a player option that is amazing that’s close to the amount that jayen Brunson is getting paid each and every year for one of the Premier 2way players in the NBA there’s no rush to trade him at this point he already signed on the dotted line and statistically speaking he looks as good as ever he averaged 22.5 points per game this past year he shot 36% from three he dished out six assists and five rebounds per game this past year had a positive offensive box plus minus and VP so if the Hawks played this situation right they could have leveraged the dejonte Murray trade into a plethora of assets and really set themselves up for either a retool or a rebuild and with all due respect they did not do that at all whatsoever so according to W the Atlanta Hawks are trading dejonte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans yes ladies and gentlemen Deonte Murray’s is going to be going from a HW to Pelican the Pelicans are trading a 2025 first round pick via the Los Angeles Lakers and a least favorable Milwaukee Pelicans 2027 first round pick Larry Nance Jr and more for dejonte Murray we would find out that more pretty much means Dyson Daniels and that’s the full details of the trade the reason the Pelicans are doing this is they were 0 and 24 when trailing entering the fourth quarter and 2 and 14 in close games and they see Murray as a player who can generate offense late in games the pals remain committed to a core that includes Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum the pals are trying to find some common ground with Brandon Ingram’s contract whereas the Hawks are ending the Deonte Murray and Trey young experiment bringing on a promising young wing and Dyson Daniels and getting a pick in the Deep 2025 draft Landry Fields knew the Hawks had to make a move in the back court and there’s still more offseason work to be done so let’s break this down man for the New Orleans Pelicans no question about it this is an a a plus plus type of move this is the type of move where Brandon Ingram looks at the team and says damn do I really want to leave this team that just swung a huge trade that could potentially rocket us to the top of the Western Conference bear in mind during the 2022 to 2023 season in the beginning of the year when Zion Williamson was fully healthy the New Orleans Pelicans were a top three team in the west and this year you already heard that they were very much on the cusp of being one of the best teams in the Western Conference but they had difficulty closing Gam games now they add a player that brings defense to their roster alongside Brandon Ingram who has always been a solid defensive player in my opinion I think this is the type of trade that could make the New Orleans Pelicans this year’s version of the OKC Thunder or the Minnesota Timberwolves and they didn’t have to give up CJ McCollum or Brandon Ingram or of course not Zion Williamson they gave up a Lakers 2025 draft pick and at that point you’re pretty much banking on the Lakers to stink this year that pick could easily be the 17th overall pick in this year’s NBA draft depending on how good JJ reic is and how incredible Brony James is of course and then you get to pick between your own pick and the Bucks pick to send over to the Hawks in return for dejonte Murray for the Pelicans this is a fleece there’s no way I could look at it otherwise I don’t typically give this aggressive of a take whenever I record videos but in this case it’s an A++ for the Pelicans for the Atlanta Hawks I usually never grade A Team this low whenever it comes to a trade I sat down and I racked my brain over and over and over again in regards how this could potentially make sense but you’re pretty much giving up a player that is getting underpaid for what he brings to the table a player that is one of the best two-way guards in the NBA a player that you could have sat and held on to till the trade deadline until the perfect deal came along and you shipped him for peanuts on the dollar and the problem is the Atlanta Hawks are in the same situation that the Brooklyn Nets were in in this past year before they made the Mel Bridges trade they don’t have the opportunity to rebuild because the San Antonio Spurs hold their picks and I don’t know what else they’re cooking up here I don’t know if they’re planning on trading Trey young at this point but the Atlanta Hawks really screw themselves here Deon Murray was their best asset this is the type of trade I would say is good for Clint capella but for Deonte Murray the onetime allstar the 2021 to 2022 steals Champion a player that shoots 36% from three a player that was averaging a steel per a game a player that’s getting paid $28 million a year for the next three seasons minimum this is what you get in return for him dude I’m sorry I rarely ever do this but for the Atlanta Hawks this is an F this is a horrible return for your investment unless if I’ve been sleeping on Dyson Daniels tremendously maybe I’m too much of a stat head maybe I don’t think this individual that averaged 5.8 points four rebounds and 2.7 assists per game and shot 31% from three maybe I’m sleeping on him maybe this is the guy that’s going to make or break it for the Hawks Larry NS Jr has always been a solid player but come on man this is not the return for Deonte Murray and the draft picks aren’t that good to justify this type of trade you know who the biggest winner of this trade is it’s the San Antonio Spurs because once again the San Antonio Spurs get the Atlanta Hawks first round pick from from 2025 all the way to 2027 and this is a cautionary tale for the teams that like to go all in on these stars because if you mess up you’re making these opposing teams significantly stronger the San Antonio Spurs recently traded for a 2031 unprotected draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves we have a separate video on that cuz I think it’s really unique but that combined with the trade that they made for Deonte Murray might set up Victor web inyama for a Kareem ABD Jabar esque career so for the Spurs you also get an A+ for the way you’ve been rebuilding around wemi so far but the Hawks man oh my God this is one of the worst
