MAVS TRADE: Quentin Grimes for Tim Hardaway Jr, Nico Harrison Does it Again + KLAY THOMPSON?!

on today’s show Nico Harrison did it again checked off four out of the maps like five boxes for the off season in one Fell Swoop how did he do it and what does this deal mean we’ll talk about all that Prodigy what you got for me slightly biased man it feels kind of dirty we we trade away Tim Hardway Jr and let it ride immediately no you got you tra trade for Quinton Grimes right it’s okay all right all right all right we’ll let it ride for Quint every trade away from someone is a trade for someone else that’s a great Point that’s a great point maybe in the future but uh but yeah the maps make a move and they make a trade and hey we love trades we love talking about trades we’ll talk about the implications of this trade we’ll talk about Tim Hardway Jr what he brought to the Mavericks what he meant to the to the team and all that kind of stuff we’ll also I think we may touch on the the kavus Callo Pope rumor K rumor shocking maybe we’ll talk about that one a little later uh nuggets a little petty and I kind of like it I kind of love it yeah makes sense we’ll talk about uh what this means for for Derrick Jones Jr we’ll talk about Quinton Grimes and who he is and all that stuff but slightly I want to start here Nico Harrison did it again he did it again yeah I mean this this was the this is one of the first offseasons going into it where I felt confident all right I don’t think I have to worry that this franchise is going to make a move that is super embarrassing ridiculous that I’ll have to come on here and figure out some way to like pitch to everybody because for years the MS would make moves and I’d be like all right Christian Wood all right now I gotta figure out a way to pitch this to be like all right this is a good move for the Mavericks this is why the Mavericks are doing it to try and figure out their rationale about moves uh heartbreak is one thing my ego is another I beg you don’t embarrass me mfer that that that line from the Sabrina Carpenter song is embody what Mavericks fans felt like going into off seasons for the last like I don’t know 5 6 7 10 15 20 years and I went into this offseason confident that I think niik Harris want to make the right trades and this one is one of those where you get off of Tim arway Jr’s contract it checks a whole bunch of boxes get off of Tim Marty Jr’s contract which you needed to do for several reasons one of those is you create enough space to bring back Derrick Jones Jr this this trade solidifies they’ll bring back Derrick Jones Jr I believe they also acquired a young player that’s a young player that can grow with the core he’s 24 years old and also a player that could help improve point of attack and bring viable shooting like you check off all these boxes with this move niik Harrison got to give him credit like he figured out a way to do it and it only took three second round picks and after yesterday I I saw you were talking about this the Reggie Jackson trade made me a little nervous that the Mavs weren’t going to be able to do a trade like this because it took three seconds just to get off Reggie Jackson’s $5 million deal for the Nuggets yeah I made a Twitter video what Nick was alluding to where I was I pretty much said you could kiss this exact deal but goodbye because I just thought like the the Reggie Jackson if in case you weren’t haven’t been following like other NBA transactions the Nuggets had to attach three second round picks to dump Reggie Jackson to Charlotte yeah who’s making five million dollar so that I saw that and was like oh my God what is the cost of dumping you know the the Timberwolves had to dump Windell Moore Jr who they drafted in the first round just two years ago and attach a second round pick to just get off of that like contract yeah yeah yeah like a high second round pick to get off of a rookie scale contract I was seeing all the the the Kings had to attach Davon Mitchell to uh vznik to get off of that and save some money and I just saw all that and I was like man what is going to be the cost for unloading Tim Hardway Jr and considering all those other trades get you know three second round picks that’s the cost of doing business but then getting a young interesting player in return who we’re only two we’re only like two summers removed from him being viewed as like an Untouchable trade asset in Donovan Mitchell trade talks like that was a thing that happened two years ago and this is a a young guy I mean it it’s and it say train I can’t believe the maps pulled it off uh if I’m a nuggets fan I’m looking at this like what just happened like what how did we get like where where did we go wrong if I’m a Pistons fan of Italy I’m looking at this like what did we get in return like how could we have not gotten something else from this I think yeah if you’re looking at the Pistons side of it uh you at least get a shooter like he’s a he’s at least a viable he’s at least a viable player and I think that that’s maybe the difference between Tim and Reggie Jackson I know there was at least one person in the YouTube comment section yelling at me for saying there’s no difference between Tim Hardaway and Reggie Jackson like yeah there is like at least Tim is still Tim can still get super hot from three 65 he’s a bigger bigger guy all that kind of stuff but for the Mavericks it it just checks so many boxes the Mavs will now be able to use most of there’s it’s they’re like 50,000 short or something like that if CBA Mavs is math uh on Twitter is correct they’re like $50,000 short of the using the whole taxpayer mid-level exception but they’ll be able to use pretty much all that on Derrick Jones Jr and so that allows you to bring back Derrick Jones Jr checks that box which I think is is awesome we’ll cross that bridge when we get there but it that was priority number one for the Mavericks Nico Harrison said it was priority 1 a and one B to get him and they accomplished that with this trade that’s why to me if there wasn’t like that extra thing to it I would be I would feel good about this trade be like okay cool awesome like you know you move off of who didn’t play for you in the finals and maybe you get a guy that could play play for you in the finals and and like that’s fine but because it unlocks that piece of it with Derrick Jones Jor at his salary you keep him you don’t take a you guarantee that you won’t take a step back necessarily at least roster wise uh then that’s good the Mavs will have to replace Tim Hardy Jr scoring somewhere and I think that’s something to to talk about in the coming days does Jaden Hardy take a step up does he just take all of Tim’s minutes because we cannot don’t don’t let the finals and the playoffs and all that let you forget how important Tim hard Jun was to this team during the regular season a lot of the time yeah that’s a good point and and that I think I also made that point in in the Twitter video where like Reggie Jackson is just not a really probably not an NBA player at this point in his career anymore or like to Yi is but anywhere else right everyone is I could be an NBA player next to yic seems but uh no uh Tim is still like especially for a team like Detroit a young team that desperately needs shooting like actual volume three-point shooting to help space the floor a little bit for their young guys Tim actually makes some sense so I I I’m thinking you know on paper it doesn’t make that much sense as a trade for the Pistons considering what other teams have given up for salary dumps but Tim I think is somebody who probably did have at least some value across the league not like first round pick value or anything like that obviously but enough value to where it’s not it’s not necessarily oh I’m just taking this terrible contract like Evan forier or something uh over the past couple years for the Knicks like I’m I’m getting a player who might help me help contribute a little bit and yeah they are going to have to place we talked we talked about this on this show a bunch like uh in the talks about trading Tim whether that was last offseason or at the trade deadline you’re going to have to replace that shooting somewhere like I get that everyone was ready to get rid of him because of all his flaws and stuff like that as a player but that the volume three-point shooting is an important thing when the Mavericks sort of changed their identity at the trade deadline it sort it sort of changed that quite a bit and I think that’s a big reason why Tim just fell out of the rotation entirely uh in the playoffs and stuff is because they didn’t that’s not how they were built anymore just to bomb away threes and pray for the best but you still you still are going to have to replace that because there’s going to be games in December and January where Luca is out Kyrie is out Luca got seven different leg injuries um because you know he just plays basketball 247 365 and um you’re gonna need some scoring to to replicate that so we’ll see in the coming days for me we’ll see in a couple weeks if the Mavericks can get get somebody yeah if you’re gonna look at one downside to this deal is uh the Mavs just traded their biggest tradable contract and three second round picks and did not get a scorer back for it like yes they did they do keep Derrick Jones Jr like all the all the things I just said they will not take a step back which is good so as long as luuka and Kyrie are healthy their their offense is going to be their offense is fine their defense is gonna be fine maybe Grim steps in and and plays you know a viable role and all that kind of stuff they did not upgrade at you know at offensive like offensive Creator which is a big thing that we we’ve been saying even through you know the playoffs like all right well in the offseason they really got to focus on that you just lost your biggest contract to do that just lost three second round picks and that that’s maybe a downside to it is they didn’t do they didn’t do something else that could have could have helped them but this is a helpful good move I think overall like it does check a bunch of boxes does a lot of things coming up let’s talk about what Quint Grimes brings to the team can he play what’s his role what does he do all that kind of stuff we’ll talk about that in more coming up I don’t believe he shouldn’t be here today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app today use that code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms will apply uh you each and every one of you checking us out throughout the offseason we woke up today to a trade I woke up I literally woke up and like checked my phone and like you know nothing had really happened I was like okay there’s a couple rumors Rumblings here and there and then all of a sudden I just got a bunch of notifications like the Mavericks have traded Tim Hardway Jr three second round picks for Quinton Grimes and I was like all right they fin the Mad Men they finally they finally did it they got it done so we talked about you know what this trade does what it what it accomplishes it also by the way one more thing it accomplishes the might as well keep Dante XM as well too that was something that I was a little bit questioning I had really said it on the show yet but I was like if they can’t figure out a way to get rid of Tim and do this maybe they’ll find some other way to get off of money and uh Dante xm’s non-g guaranteed deal was part of that but Tim McMahon reported that they’ll keep Dante XM which I think is is important too because he did play a good role in the regular season too helped with scoring helped with playmaking helped with with defense all that kind of stuff and so I think that’s that’s an important thing for the Mavs moving forward so they keep D X on oh I didn’t even I didn’t even know that that was a possibility honestly it was a non- guaranteed deal so like if they’re they’re crunching for money they’re trying to find it somewhere it’s like all right well maybe we maybe we start not guaranteeing this deal and shipping off this guy and like but they figured out a way to avoid that that would have hurt yeah that that would have hurt in my opinion if they let go ex him but going back to what I said before that’s what I think the Mavs of the past would have had to do all right we’ll have to to what is it starve Peter to feed Paul like what’s what’s that old phrase like we would have to we would have to I’ll take your word for it what’s the phrase you always say that I don’t know knock on glass knock on glass shave your ass uh but that I think feel like Mavs in the past would have had to like all right we’re going to be able to do accomplish this thing we want but we’ll have to take away from this thing that that we want and so uh the Mavs didn’t have to do it here man ma Mavs of the past would have traded Josh GRE I mean it would have been the most disgusting trade you’ve ever seen in your life to open up like $15 million to try and go after a kcp or something and then he signed somewhere else for 28 million like that would have been in M the let’s talk about Quinton Grimes Quinton Grimes is a 65 Wing guard is type of player He’s listed as a shooting guard but I think you know he’ll be a wing in the Mavs system just turned 24 years old in may he played for a couple years with the Knicks like like slightly said he was a player that was a starter for them he started 66 out of you know 71 games average 11 points three rebounds a couple of assists shot pretty well from three he shot uh 38% on five threes a game in his 162 games with the Knicks and so he was viewed as like a young like like piece that they you know really wanted he was used in the trade to go get buan bogdanovich they thought that was sort of a you know an upgrade trade he only played six games for the Pistons is that enough to get the Pistons stink on you six games do you think no he I think he was over for his last 15 from three there though so the stink the stench got to him though a little tiny bit in the six games did get but yeah he was sort of like the he you could say he was like the Cornerstone of that trade to to get buam bogdanovich to try and like you know upgrade that Knicks team and add another score and all that kind of stuff but um but yeah he’s I would say he’s a lot like Josh Green I would compare him a lot to him just in you know like the size the age the shooting ability I think Josh Green is a better playmaker and passer I think Quinton Grimes will be a better point of attack Defender we keep hoping that Josh Green will step forward as this really good point of attack like guarding guards guarding guys that that handle the ball we hope that he’ll take a step forward in that and it just really hasn’t like you saw that all throughout the playoffs like all right this hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it can’t happen for Josh he could still find a way to take a step forward but uh Quin Grimes I think is already ahead of him in in that category and so that’s something to watch and something to see he can also play with Josh Green I don’t think that these guys are competing for minutes necessarily I think that you can find you know spots for for both of these guys to play but I think Quin gr just getting him it’s a young interesting player who could still grow into a role he’s only been in the NBA three years so he can still grow a little bit obviously the the catch and shoot opportunities he’s going to get with the Mavs are are going to be in innumerous for sure and I think he’ll take full advantage of that yeah I mean it’s like you said Quinton G’s definitely a better point of attack Defender than Josh Green although I will say I think his defense took a tiny step back this year uh so he was injured I mean he’s he’s a guy who’s been injured a good chunk of his career you know nothing like severe or anything like that but just missing games here and there 46 games his rookie year played 71 games uh last season with the Knicks and then just 51 games this year with you know the only the six games he played for Detroit out of what like 30 nine something like that yeah yeah he uh was hurt for pretty much the entire end of the season uh but yeah he’s a better point of attack Defender I think Josh Green that’s not his strength like you said more of just like a energy guard who can just kind of fly around Good Team Defender and stuff like that Josh Green better playmaker Quinton Grimes a more willing shooter although I will say what’s what’s kind of interesting about this is whenever this rumor was floating around a few days ago I dug into Quinton Grimes a little bit and I guess I don’t fully remember you know don’t like follow the Knicks as much as like Knicks people obviously but it got a little bit like strous there towards the end where he was like openly upset about his role in New York would talk about being out of rhythm and just not getting the ball that much offensively and how it kind of affected his shooting and just his willingness to shoot with the Knicks which is I think is why you know he shot 33% from three last season 36 with the Knicks 14% with the Pistons my God those six games really bad yeah yeah but uh that that’s a little bit interesting to me because obviously the Mavs and nicks are similares in the sense offensively where you have isolation heavy guards that are going to run the show but they’re different in that one of the isolation heavy guard for the Mavericks is one of the greatest Playmakers we’ve ever seen and really likes setting up teammates for open threes which is what Quinton Grimes is going to shoot so I could see a world where he’s shooting if if he if he gets like a solid amount of playing time uh you know six or seven threes a game is I think something that could definitely happen if that’s assuming he’s like a 25 to 30 minute player which I don’t know if that’s GNA be the case or not yeah yeah we’ll see so he’ll have to be set up this is another thing where Jason kid has to come in and set set him up well to know what his role could could potentially be and what it could be because he could be moved around like we saw Tim hard’s role go from starting level player to guy that played a bunch to coming off the bench to you know not playing in the playoff at all to playing to playing minutes like just all over the place and so this is going to be a task for for Jason kid to try and all right we all love that they’ve got a bunch of these young guys that all want minutes and all want rolls and are all hungry and all that but then once you start bringing a bunch of them in it’s like all right how can how can you make them all happy how can you keep them all feeling good about their role and all that and so yeah I think that that the difference between the Knicks offense and the Mavericks offense is yeah Luca will set you up Brunson is not that that type of playmaker like if you’re a Knicks fan you’re upset about that statement like go home and rethink your life like don’t don’t sell any more de sticks yeah that shouldn’t be a controversial take there no it should it shouldn’t be so we’ll see we’ll see what kind of role he fits in and all that but I think he’s a young interesting player could grow into his role gonna come in and be you know decent Defender decent three-point shooter and figure it and figure it out from there figure out where he can if what if the high level let’s say that he maximizes everything it all works out and you’re all like oh my gosh this is the Quinton Grimes that we dreamed of like he could be a starter I mean it I would if it’s a Quinton Grimes that people had dreamed of again I’m I’m not exaggerating what I say he was viewed as an Untouchable trade piece in a Donovan Mitchell trade two summers ago like that that’s a real thing that happened so if that level of Quinton Grimes if you just want to write off this past season it’s like weird year didn’t love his fit was just kind of them adding Dante divon chenzo made his spot in the rotation kind of weird and he never found a rhythm and then he got traded the Pistons and then got hurt if you just want to throw that away say 23 years old has shown some flashes here and there his on ball creation flashes just from a scoring perspective is more than we’ve seen from Josh Green for sure he’s not the playmaker like he doesn’t have the playmaking shops that Josh Green does but that combined with his like really what we’ve seen at time Strat is career like teetering on really good to elite point of attack defense then that’s that’s like a 35 minute per game 20 plus million dollar a year player will he get to there I wouldn’t say I’m like super conf in it but it it’s possible yeah that’s that’s the high end the low end is that he gets frustrated with his role doesn’t play a lot and then you know it turns into what what Josh green has been the last couple of years where he’s in he’s out it depends on who’s who’s healthy and all that kind of stuff we should also mention he’s he’s from The Woodlands uh down down in Houston he went to the Woodlands uh The Woodlands College Park is that’s a high school down there the woodlands College Park is a high school man the less I know about Houston the better but he’s getting he’s getting closer to home there so good for him uh he went to Houston college the actual College the actual College of Houston for Houston college park no no the Houston college like the Cougars the cougs so he went to Houston he went to Woodlands College Park for high school then he went to Houston college like the college I mean how how confusing is that you didn’t you didn’t go to high school in Texas did you I did not some of these high schools are so big that you you could be well yeah tricked into thinking they’re College that’s very true uh so yeah that’s Quinton Grimes that’s how I feel we feel about him we’ll see what happens we’ll talk more about him in the coming days we’ll probably bring on lock on Nicks guys to talk about his fit and all that kind of stuff and we’ll do that but uh coming up let’s talk about Tim Aro Jr let’s talk about kcp did the MS try to get kcp could they still get kcp some of their next steps we’ll do that and more coming up you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here today’s episode is brought to you by eBay Motors passion Drive slightly we’re talking about the Mavs trade of Tim Hardway Jr three second round picks four Quinton Grimes we like the move checks off a bunch of boxes Quinton Grimes interesting player we’ll see how he fits in rotation we’ll talk about that more throughout the offseason so stick with us uh let’s talk about Tim hard Jr here Tim Hardway Jr leaves the Mavericks he was with the Mavericks for what five and a half years or so he comes over in the porzingis deal he’s now the last the last piece of that porzingis deal that finally is gone now we’re we’re free of it we’re free of the draft pick we’re free of the draft pick from this this draft that just happened and we’re free of of Tim Hardway Jr now and so the first poring is trade is now over and the second one technically because dwy and bton are both gone too true what was the second round pick we gave up in that was that has that already passed or was that some 20 40 pick I think every second round pick in yesterday’s draft were all traded at some point so I’m not gonna stop they usually are like the the 2028 one so the Mavs gave up in in the Tim Hardway to you know Detroit trade that they just did they gave up a 2025 Toronto I have no idea how they have that pick by the way I was trying to take I like how do they have that 2025 Toronto second round pick and two 2028 picks and I went and tried to look it up so there’s real GM has a Tracker Where it’s like all the second round picks and uh and where they come from and like let me just read this I’m gonna read it the 2028 ones that the Mavs have one of them to Indiana if Indiana has conveyed second potential first round pick to Toronto by 2027 or if Toronto or Toronto if Indiana has not conveyed second potential first round pick to Toronto by 2027 they also have the less favorable of Charlotte and the Clippers Miami if Dallas couldve his first round pick to Charlotte in 2027 so I don’t know where these picks are coming from yeah but they’re coming from they had them they had four second round picks now I think they only have one the protections are just so like I don’t they’ll start rambling them off like Phoenix if they swap with Houston and then Houston could swap with Memphis and I’m just like all right I’m out just who has just tell me who who’s picking where in the draft it’s it’s ridiculous these second round picks uh I got tagged a million times this is my phrase second round picks are the lube of Trades and it happened again they they they pushed one through yeah I mean also too I do want to say I think part of the reason why that’s the case now is scouting has gotten so much better if you go back and you look at previous drafts just the amount of second round picks that I mean never even got close to suiting up in the NBA or just stay overseas or whatever is mindboggling compared to now where feels like out take half of the second round picks at least get some burn at some point like they teams will at least try them out it’s just like scouting has gotten so much better that second round picks I think teams find them somewhat attractive now just the idea of Dart throws but Tim now leaves he was fourth all time in Maverick’s three-point field goals made he’s fourth alltime in three-point field goals attempted for the Mavericks which that that in of itself is just that’s kind of wild that’s crazy that that high up um he also leaves in uh he also leaves the Mavericks in number one all time for Dallas Maverick if you’re at home guess what Tim Hardway JR could be number one all time Dallas Maverick in this percentage aren’t gonna be pretty yeah everybody got their answers locked in turnover percentage in a good way wow Timmy lowest turnover percentage of a Maverick of all time 6.2% well when you don’t pass Reggie Bullock is uh second 7% Harrison Barnes is third 7.5% that man did not pass we were we were trying to get him and we were like can Harrison Mars get to three assists a game that’s like a conversation we had back when he was there more porzingis 7.6 Brandon Wright 7.6 Charlie villanea 7.6 Dirk 8.4 shout out to shout out to the great one the basketball Jesus Trey Burke 8.9% he’s eighth all time and then number nine your boy and mine 9.2% turnover percentage for the map your boy of mine Christian Wood the believer who’s the believer Luka Tim legler all right [Applause] legs yes people are like why is he reading all the turnover I just I just wanted to get to Tim legler make the J all right I was wondering where that was headed I was about like are we just doing the top 50 or I needed to get to Tim legler I thought you would like that yeah good one Tim also leaves he’s made the most threes in a Finals game for the Dallas Mavericks all that’s right all time which is you think that you think that that quarter swung this trade yeah the Pistons were like you we could get Tim Hardway the guy that made five threes in a Finals game for the M all right there’s still something there we’re going for it uh how will you remember Tim Hardway Jr so Tim has fallen into fell into the unfortunate you know um phase that certain players fall into with their fan bases where they’ve probably stayed a little bit longer than they should have their role on the team was maybe a little bit bigger than it should have been and then things turned very toxic I thought a lot of the toxicity towards Tim was unfair and oftentimes way too far and that’s that’s not just like a Mavs fan thing every fan base does this where it just it reaches a point where it’s like all right like we’re talking about like a human being here guys like let’s reel it in a tiny bit but it it it did it did it was time you know the Hardway senior quotes were bad but look Tim Tim was a very important piece of this team for a long time and that that was like the way that they were built right was they’re gonna bomb threes they’re gonna shoot a bunch of Threes And they’re G if they’re hitting threes it’s gonna be very very difficult to beat him and Tim was a big piece of that he was a I mean in December he was the betting favorite for Sixth Man of the Year like he was having a great season stepped up in a lot of ways when Kyrie was hurt and the Mavs were just having weird rotation stuff with their guards early in the season and Hardy hadn’t really taken that leap we had wanted and stuff like that so you know it was time to move on um a frustrating player for sure but man when he was hot I I I don’t know if there’s a heat checked player like him in the league he he just catches the ball and goes up with it no matter where the defender is no matter how many Defenders are near him so um I wish him well honestly I I hope I hope he finds something in Detroit and you know keeps playing basketball yeah exact exact same that that I feel about him yeah he got he got maligned by the end of his career there’s there’s times where you you just were frustrated him because you saw the potential of it you saw there there’s some days where you’re like man Tim AR Jr how great just bombing threes like nobody nobody can stop this guy from hitting threes and then you’d watch him in transition turn the ball over again and you’re like oh my gosh or or take a three that he probably shouldn’t or do that the Mavs needed that like unconsciousness sometimes though they needed that guy to come out and just not be afraid to to take a shot they needed it in the finals and kid tried to go to it a couple times too yeah that’s the pitfall of having a player like that and there’s MS fans and you know myself are were interested in like scores Off the Bench and stuff like that backup guys like H ston Jordan Clarkson has been brought up those are also similar players where it’s like I don’t care that I’ve just missed my last six shots I’m shooting it and that there will be the same frustrations with those guys assuming the Maverick’s gonna get them and those those guys are I think more talented than Tim Hardway Jr don’t get me wrong but you know that’s those are important players for teams and it’s frustrating in the moment but like you said that level of unconsciousness where it’s just like I’m shooting I don’t care last thing here let’s talk about the kcb rumor Mark Stein reported the Mavericks and kcp did have mutual interest in cre in figuring something out kcb just declined his $15 million uh player option for the nuggets and so he it looks like he’s going to leave the Nuggets all the the comments that Calin Booth the GM made and all that just seems like they’re they’re not going to be able to bring him back unless they do something they got to move off of contracts and do this and they got to do just basically what the Mavs just did but in a bigger way to keep kcp and there are teams out there that will sign him like the difference between him and Tim way is that there will be teams that are very interested in bringing him back and and kcb is a actual free agent Tim Hardway is not but uh but Stein also reported that that the uh the Nuggets according to to some seemed uninterested in facilitating a sent trade even if that meant that the Nuggets would get nothing back for kcb which is a level of pettiness that I just I’m for I’m for that like hey you you cuz that means they see the Mavericks as competition right like that that means they all right we don’t want to help you because you’re a competition in the west and I think that that’s a great like you know compliment um the MAV the nuggets have seemed like this team that’s above everybody for so long and now they’re like hey you know we don’t want to help our competition we just didn’t make the the Western Conference finals last year I I agree I do like that level of pettiness I it it made me a little bit sad because I read that report and then Stein was like yeah it’s not going to happen but there’s a level of interest and I’m like oh I wish I just didn’t even read that because I love kcp and his I I hadn’t even thought about him as a Mavs Target just because I figure a team like the Sixers will throw $25 million a year at him pretty easily uh I I’d be interested in calling that bluff if I’m the Mavericks hey you’re gonna lose kcp for nothing he wants to come here Maxi and Josh Green you guys need depth you need you guys need desperately need bench pieces man like you cannot rely on these rookies and sophomores like we’ we’ve seen these guys we’ve seen you we’ve seen you try it we s we saw you try to do it to replace Bruce Brown you couldn’t even replace Bruce brown with these guys like there’s no way you can replace kcp I’m very concerned if I’m a Pistons or a nuggets fan by the way that’s yeah right that is something to watch because that’s kyp was very important for them this year their that point of attack defense that he provided along with the shooting and just off the dribble stuff he can do that’s a massive loss and now they’re gonna have back-to-back off Seasons with Bruce Brown leaving and I thought they’d have an easier time replacing Bruce brown but that ended up being that’s tough yeah that was a tough one and now kyp that’s that’s something to watch and and then these weird reports they’re like in on Klay Thompson and then I saw on Paul George and I’m like whoa are they like that would have to me an mpj right they’re they’re like really it would have to yeah it would have to he makes 30 million there’s no other way that they could even make salaries work and then they’re like we’re also going to give Jamal Murray you know an extension or like so this this CBA is so weird and that you could lose your own players that easily but you can retain your star players retain your top level Talent easily like you you could do that because no one else can get them no one else can go out and get a Jamal Murray but they could they can and they can keep them but you can’t keep a kcp very weird it’s a very weird thing Sal rules is another like reason why this was such a great trade for the Mavs and why Nico did so good is the teams that like the second apron and stuff is punishing and the first apron is is punishing stuff so teams with money know that these teams that are pushing it and are trying to free up money are are desperate like they’re going to be desperate to get off of money so like I think some of these salary dump trades in the future and even now will be kind of shocking with what teams have to give up so the M’s getting off of what what was him making 18 million 16 this year yeah it went down 16 yeah that’s right it was a declining 16 million and getting like a 23y old in return is interesting it’s great and it’s well he’s he’s not necessarily cost controlled because he is he has uh you know Grimes is making 4.2 million this year and then he’ll be you know a free agent and so we’ll see what they do on that that’s that’s not that’s not great either but they can they can figure something out with that new Stein report just now uh oh Klay Thompson they’re intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson once he makes it the free agency who does the Mavericks that’s what the league sources tell the steinline that Dallas Mavericks with some new found Financial flexibility after securing the Tim Hardway Jr to Detroit trade that I wrote about on Tuesday are another team intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson this is a Stein tweet no it was in his his uh in the Stein line his uh thing somebody somebody screenshotted it and tweeted it out okay hold on hold on while we’re that that could just be agent speak though we’ve gota we’ve gotta confirm it it would be this would be very difficult yeah leag hes tell the Stein line Mavericks with some you know flexib like everything you just said is correct um I wouldn’t lie I wouldn’t lie to the locked on viewers they I would lie to they would have to not sign Derek Jones Jr to do that and sign yep clay with their tax play midlevel exception right would that be cold I was actually kind of thinking when we were I was doing a stream yesterday we were talking about in the chat I was like it was like if a more attractive mid-level Target made itself available like would that be cold blooded the guy handh holding with like holding hands with the girl that turn that turns around meme like Klay Thom uh I should make that real quick hold on let me go to photoshoop um they could also do some kind of tra like you know dump of Maxi or Josh Green so because bringing Quinn Grimes kind of makes Josh Green Expendable now because you have that that type of player still there uh but this is interesting they they also don’t they have they’re they’re under the first apron now the Mavericks are not even even like close to that second apron right now so that that’s an interesting thing about this too is that you know the the flexibility that they have they could find wiggle room in ways they’re they’re much more flexible with exceptions and things like that than if they were up against the second like you know the suns suns couldn’t do this because they’re no stuck in that second apron so they’re done this is interesting this is interesting CLA Derrick Jones Jr I thought may I thought maybe that the the offseason was done and the Mavericks had had done everything but now we just learned that it’s not so hey stick with locked on Mavs we’ll be here all throughout it I’ll continue to do shows until the Mavs not being interesting in the off seon uh hey can we can we plug uh slightly unplugged we can plug unplugged tell them what it’s going to be I’m very excited for this all right I’m going I’m going to Europe tomorrow I’m leaving tomorrow Well I this is getting posted today right I’m assuming yeah right right yeah okay so I I’ll be in Europe tomorrow free agency starts Sunday technically is when like the pratorum time starts I’m GNA just moratorium moratorium whatever the preor pre moratorium that’s where we’re at right now we’re in the pratorum yeah right we’re in the pratorum uh I’m going to delete all of the media things off my phone try not to know anything happening in free agency nobody text slightly no one you guys can text me just don’t T don’t text me uh NBA related news no no one text him at all don’t I don’t I’m not sure anybody watching this has my number besides you I would hope not at least just random texts hey dude uh but anyways you’d be surprised I’ve gotten texts from listeners and I’ve been like how’d you get this that’s pretty funny but uh that’s scary actually but I’ve have uh I I’ll be back July 12th I’ll go live right when I get back on my YouTube channel and Nick will be hosting it and he will tell me everything that’s happened I’ll keep running I’ll keep on running list of all the NBA stuff not just Mavericks because you’ll be like well the Mavericks just did what they’re gonna do all the NBA stuff everything happens so if LeBron moves he you will probably not know and you’ll come back and I will get to break it to you tell you what happens I’m very excited it’s on the slightly biased YouTube channel so subscribe to subscribe to that one stick here with this one uh yeah it’s going to be fun I I’m very excited and just and just before because Europeans have gotten mad at me on on Twitter for this I I’m not I I understand that you guys like basketball and that there’s a chance that I might find out by being there some Frey moves a TV is somewhere where like you know you’ll see it on ESPN or something like okay fine but but there there’s I highly doubt Europe will be covering a Derrick Jones Jr signing so I I think that we’re all right there or a Paul George trade like you know yeah it’ll be if LeBron moves teams there’s absolutely no way I would not know about it right I just don’t I think it’d be I I would be getting phone calls from people that I hadn’t spoken to in 10 years it’s also LeBron is not moving because his son is literally on his team now and like he did all you can’t do all that and then leave like that would be insane that would be really funny actually but if they’re like the Rockets get Kevin Durant you know what I mean like they pulled that off and do that and Matt is looks like a liar then then I’ll get to tell you that I think there’s one sneaky move I think there’s one sneaky move there’s got to be a big there’s got to be one at least one big one we just saw the muel bridges trade before the draft like there’s always the Denny Avia trade like that’s that the Denny Avia trade you’re not finding that about that in Europe no no way right like yeah because you’re actively trying to avoid it so right right right right so anyway that’ll be on the slightly biased YouTube channel won’t be on this one so go check out that July 12th July 12th we’ll do that one that’ll be it’ll be live we’ll do it live live of course man all write it and we’ll do it live on July 12th so but stick with lockdown Ms we’ll have all kinds of offseason stuff we’ll continue to do shows all throughout guys thanks much for listening to lock on Mavs peace out boom July 12th baby slightly unplugged

  1. Mavs need shooters and another good center because Maxi is just taking up salary and space. If you keep him, I'm sure he'll be even more of a liability. We should try hard for a good veteran shooter and not end up becoming a kindergarten of young, inexperienced players.

  2. That Maxi and Green S&T for Thompson or KCP and bringing Dinwiddie back is gonna hit way different here in a few days after we re sign DJJ of course…

  3. Surely the Nuggets aren't so petty that they lose a very valuable asset for nothing. I agree with Slightly, call their bluff. Josh Green & Kleber for KCP would def help solve our Point of Attack defender need, plus KCP has shot over 40% from 3 the past two seasons. However he has been playing the 2 guard his whole career, but he would need to slide to the 3 for us. The main issue I see is this roster would be loaded at the SG position and weak at Forward depth. KCP, Exum, & Grimes are all about 6'5" SGs, and Hardy is listed at 6'4" but feel like he's closer to 6'3". Kryie & Luka average 72.5 of the 96 minutes at the Gaurd positions. That only leaves 23.5 minutes of backcourt time to split between those 4 players, so most of their minutes would be played at the SF. With Kleber gone & O'Max not developed enough, who is our backup PF? DJJ would have to slide up to the 4 when PJ sits.
    Luka – Kyrie – KCP – Washington – Lively
    Exum – Hardy – Grimes – DJJ – Gafford
While this team would be better than last year's team, I don't see enough scoring on this team. They had solid defense last year and would be arguably better with this team, but they lost due to lack of scoring. Unless Lively & Hardy take huge steps up this season, the Mavs would still need a legit 3rd scoring option. But a lineup of Kyrie – KCP – DJJ – PJ – Gafford would be nasty on defense with a ton of athletic lob threats… fun to watch.
But after typing this out, I still like the Jerami Grant rumors over KCP. Grimes & DJJ would be your PoA defenders, while Grant is a 6'7" forward who's scored 20.8 points averaged over his last 4 seasons. That fills a bigger position of need currently (forward depth & legit 3rd scoring option.)

  4. Tims a good player to have on a sh!t team. He can create his own shot and if he gets hot enough he can win you the occasional game you weren't supposed to win.

  5. Toxicity toward's THJ was largely due to team construction, being the third most paid player on the team and not acting like it.

  6. You could've told me Nico traded Tim for a bag of stale potato chips and I would've been happy. Tim not being on the roster means Kidd is literally incapable of playing him. The value of that can't be put into words.

  7. is there any specific reason we’re so afraid of going into the second apron? i get that we’ll get the MLE, but if we made the finals, and we’re obviously pretty close to getting the job done, what’s so scary about the second apron?

  8. Green also was an untouchable, as far as trades, up to this season really.

Between Grimes/Green, Jonesy won't have to wear himself out reg. season. And Kidd likes the bench look with 2 Biggs/ 3 Guards.

Note: Exum is also an excellent point of attack defender..

Also, Also, I'll say Hardy isn't known for his Defense, but it wasn't like he was getting torched ever.

It's like Lukas "blow-bye" rate in the playoffs. It was mostly scheme, to funnel guys to a PJ/Gafford sandwich.

And Lukas 1 on 1 Def rate is really, really good. Dudes may get by him, but those dudes are NOT scoring much. But they don't talk about that.

  9. Look Tim was a loyal Mav but sadly it was time to move on. In relation and I'm not sure if this was on purpose but I love that Slightly Bias has a brick wall as the background to see off Tim's tenure as a Mav 😅

  10. This SHIT does NOT move the needle for us LEGITIMATELY competing with the Boston Celtics. Nico, has done an OUTSTANDING job thus far for the cards he’s dealt but, THIS AIN’T it!!!

  11. Well we got off our worse contract with THJ. Grimes is a upgrade and younger. Now go make the 1 big trade we need for a 3rd proven score who can get their own shot, play decent D and hit 3 at a high %.

  12. My idea is Maxi Kleber, Josh Green first round pick for Deandre Hunter as a 3rd scoring option at our small forward position.

  13. To refresh Mavs fans who Quentin Grimes is, remember Luka's 60-20-10 Christmas game? The guy leading the Knicks on the other end (JB was injured) was Grimes with 33

  14. with grimes in, DJJr resigning (eventually). how about DDR as mavs 6MOY? he can create for himself to spell minutes while Luka/Kyrie sits he can playmake, voted clutch player of the year 2024. Sign-n-Trade for Green+fillers (Exum,Powell) + 1RP?

  15. Been thinking on this move all day. I really love it!! It even got me wondering if Grimes couldn't win a starting spot.

Let's say he's all healthy and is having a year like the one before this last one. Where he's hitting close to 40% from 3 and getting 11 points a game. I could see Kidd going with Grimes to start and then going to DJJ. A little offense-defense.

One of the guys covering the Knicks called his corner 3 "elite". Also said that he was making Knicks fans wonder if he might be the next Klay with his shooting and defense. Now, we're dealing with a Knicks fan covering the team so we need to dial all that down to a 6. But sounds like Nico was really cooking.

  16. I think Luka really likes Josh Green so he is safe. Remember also that when our stars were failing the worst, Josh showed grit and skill in game 5 of the finals. He led the scoring in the 1st half, his defensive effort was top notch and his role-player and floor-spacing discipline makes him perfect for the mavs.
    He's the Mavs' Taz.

  17. Nico is the reason GM of the year needs to be announced after the season is over, not when the meaningful part of the season starts. Nico is the best thing to happen to the Mavericks since Luka

  18. I'm almost certain that trading Hardaway for a player another team doesn't want will solve all problems. First thing I would do is make free throw shooting practice one hour a day(all year) mandatory, some of these guys making millions still have no touch.
