Bobby Karalla On The THJ Trade, Quentin Grimes, Other Mavs Rumors | GBag Nation

I know you were focused on the NBA draft what can you tell us about the newest Maverick uh in Melvin ainsa did I say his last name right uh yeah I mean maybe not with quite as strong a French accent uh as as they would say it over there but um yeah I mean he’s 67 68 uh a little taller in shoes obviously and he’s got a 6′ eight wingspan and you know that’s kind of the body type that the Mavs have really prioritized you look over the last couple off Seasons um acquiring Derrick Jones last summer trading for PJ Washington at the deadline earlier this season it really feels like kind of their mindset moving forward is basically if you want to be on the team right if we if we want to pair you with Luca and Kyrie you either need to be bigger than Luca or a better Defender than Luca and Kyrie and ideally we want you to be both but aenta is I mean he’s he’s got ideal NBA Wings size and length uh and the three-point shot he was a guy who just turned 20 years old a couple days ago he’s already shooting in the mid to high 30s in a professional league overseason and the French pro league is a very highly regarded domestic League too and he’s playing in you know International competitions as well so for him to shoot at that clip over there at this age you know suggests to me that there is a whole lot of offensive upside there and then obviously you know he’s got the the physique uh the build and the the aptitude I feel like to play defense at an NBA level too but he is only barely 20 20 years old so I don’t know if we’ll see him you know playing in the NBA at all maybe this upcoming season there’s rumors that he may or may not join the team at all but uh we’ll see about that but I mean he he really is kind of the ideal kind of player that you would want to uh surround Luca and Kyrie with moving forward and then they send thj to Detroit uh along with three second round picks they get back Quinton Grimes what do we need to know about Grimes yeah so Grimes you know he’s what 6’4 65 so he’s not quite size but he is a defensive-minded player um you know throughout his career he’s been uh very good I feel like at at defending guards players at the point of attack which is important you know because the Mavs do have really good Rim protection now with Derek Lively and Daniel Gafford and they have pretty good Wing defense uh if they’re able to bring back Derrik Jones obviously and then with PJ Washington and guys coming off their bench but the most important aspect of Defense on the NBA in this era with as many talented Playmakers and shot creators both for themselves and for their teammates uh you have to be able to defend guys with the ball in their hands at the point of attack and especially players that play Kyrie’s position because you want to be able to protect Kyrie you don’t want Kyrie having to chase around Steph Dame Lillard Jaylen Bruns and guys like that that’s just putting Shay Gil Alexander who you just ran into in the playoffs uh and Grimes is really good at defending those kinds of players and then offensively you know last year he had a bit of a Down year shooting wise uh he was dealing with a nagging knee injury and eventually got traded to Detroit and didn’t really play much with the Pistons they ended up shutting him down so that he could recover from that injury but the season before in New York he was shooting high 30s you know on a on a high volume of attempts too you know and the Mavs we’ve seen in the in the playoffs in the finals against the Celtics you know there were so many players on the floor that would be open or would maybe have a good look at The Rim from beond The Arc and they would just hesitate just a little bit like in order to play with Luca and Kyrie you’re going to get shots the looks are going to be there but you have to be willing to take that shot when you’re open and Grimes never passes up shots I mean much in the way that that Tim did not during his time here and he’s able to knock him down at a you know 37 38% clip for most of his career so um you know was kind of the best of both worlds on both sides of the ball and hopefully obviously they can get him healthy and and he can be a contributor right away how much do this do uh to open up the chances of as you brought up Derrick Jones Jr to bring him back now yeah so with that transaction um God I’m I’m a little fuzzy with the math because there’s a whole lot of decb and and you got to you got to carry a lot of zeros and ones but uh after that trade the map should have enough money to offer the full mid-level exception um had they you know had Tim been making 1 million less you know they still would not be able to offer that full mid level you have to have that much space under the apron in order to offer that to a player and they now do have that at their disposal which is really important because the difference between the full mid-level exception and the taxpayer mid-level exception is about $7 million per year and that is a huge gap uh Derrick Jones definitely out outplayed in my opinion at least the taxpayer rate of about $5 million you know and so the Mavs Nico Harrison himself said at the end of the year resigning Derrick Jones is their priority 1 a and 1B and so they need that full mid level at their disposal um there’s rumors that they’re interested in other players too and I don’t know if that would factor into the full mid level or if that would be through a trade or what but uh yeah they do now have the ability to offer that to one player or multiple players you can divide that money up however you see fit um ultimately you know that’ll that’ll kind of take care of itself over the next few days Bobby Krill mavs.com with us here in the gag Nation uh one of those players is Klay Thompson that we’ve seen Mark Stein report on that the Mavs may have some interest in what type of player would the Mavericks be getting now what version of Klay Thompson would we be getting at this point after the injuries and some of the Aging well I just want to make it clear to Adam Sil out there listening to this I’m just talking about the player exactly that’s try to phrase the question like that just give me the scouting report on like what would teams be thinking and getting with a Klay Thompson like play absolutely absolutely we’re such a great team you guys and me I got you man that’s we love you yeah yeah so last season you know Clay shot what 38% from three on a super high volume um he was in and out of the Warriors lineup sometimes starting sometimes coming off the bench sometimes closing games sometimes not uh and we saw you know mavan saw Tim Hardway Jr kind of go through that same sort of thing you know whether you’re playing Super well or super poorly if your role is changing all the time it can be very tough to remain consistent through that because you’re not sure when you’re going to come in the game when you get subbed out you’re not sure when you’re going to go back in the game and especially for a guy like clay who’s used to go to the finals and you know playing 36 40 minutes a game um being relegated to a bench roll was probably a big shock for him but his numbers coming off the bench down the stretch of the Season were amazing so I I don’t know at this point of his career you know is is he looking to start is he looking to be a reserve or what but uh last season super high level shooter on a very high volume uh obviously at his age you know and with his injury history I think kind of the expectation and sort of the perception of him is that he’s not maybe the same level of perimeter Defender as he was a few years ago um but he’s still serviceable enough he’s still got really good size and obviously that three-point shooting I mean he’s he’s an all-time Talent from Beyond The Arc so you know whether he stays in Golden State or you know is looking for greener pure somewhere else I mean I’m sure he’s going to be really really highly sought after would but that would be like an either or situation like Klay Thompson or Derrick Jones Jr I really don’t know you know it it depends on how it works so the the the rules about sign and trade are very very complicated um if the Mavericks perform a sign and trade whether it’s one of with their one of their own players or with another team’s player they are hard capped at the first apron and you can’t pass the first apron if you offer the mid-level exception to a player anyway but where it gets really fuzzy is the the money that you’re sending out and the money that you’re receiving in a trade have to match but with a sign and trade player the money that you’re receiving only counts as half of what you’re actually receiving but you still have to be able to match that number both with your own team and with their team too so it’s like a really weird salary range that you would have to match in order to both acquire a player through sign and trade and still have the full mid-level exception but there are people that are much much smarter than me that work on that side that would hopefully be able to you know find something uh to to pull it off but of course you know they they only have 72 or so hours to figure it out but I’m sure that they’re they’re running through all those scenarios probably as we speak Bobby Krill ms.com with us here in the gag Nation you know just a couple of guys talking ball here just all hypothetically you put your GM hat on with the Quinton rymes move today uh you know what would you be looking to do with Josh Green Dante exm maybe guys that kind of already play a similar role is there a possibility that they get moved in bigger picture moves I don’t know I mean I’m I’m sure that possibility exists um as it stands right now you know if the Mavs are able to bring back Jones right and then the rest of the roster doesn’t change they have a lot of perimeter players they have a lot of shooting they have a lot of Defense but kind of the one thing that they don’t really have a whole lot of is players between let’s say like 67 and 610 you know those kind of like long rangy Wings they just don’t really have a whole lot of those guys it’s pretty much Jones PJ Washington and then maybe omx Prosper factors into the equation somehow next season you know I’m not sure what his timeline is or what the organization’s expectations for him are in the immediate future so I think if if they are able to bring Jones back and then they keep this roster they’re definitely competitive enough to go all the way to the NBA finals I mean we just saw them do it but that is kind of the one area on the roster that I feel like would would be maybe in need of adding depth uh or some form of upgrade it was far as just playable Wings against guys like Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown and you know all these guys that you’re going to run into throughout the regular season and in the postseason so um you know we’ll see if they want to make other moves it’s kind of tough you know I I think um in order to acquire obviously through sign and trade a player you’re going to have to give out a lot of salary and fans can look at the map salary sheet right now and say okay here’s a couple matching numbers and and you can kind of fill in the blanks of of who those guys would be but it’s also like you know I mean the Mavs rotation uh Nico Harrison said himself at the end of the regular at the end of the playoff run you know he wants to bring back the same seven or eight man rotation it’s going to be really really hard to make massive moves moves uh through sign and trade or or some other form of acquisition outside of just playing free agency if you’re not going to involve one of those seven or eight guys you know so if he really wants to bring back the playoff core that eliminates a lot of possible moves so I feel like they’re really weighing all sorts of options and um you know GMS always say whatever if my lips are moving don’t believe me they lie all the time um but I kind of want to take Nico at his word here uh so we’ll see I mean we’ll we’ll we’ll see what happens 1. This thread is a testament to the power of technology to connect us across vast distances. It's truly a marvel of the modern age.🐱

  2. Thank God us fans never have to see THJ throw up a brick 3 pointer again (except for when we play Detroit and he tosses up bricks against us, LOL). Praise Jesus!

  3. Fun fact, his cousin Alexis Ajinca played for the Mavs back in 2010/2011 came over with Tyson Chandler from Charlotte

  4. Klay would be huge for Dallas. He would be the best 3 pt shooter on the team especially as a 6th man.

  5. Dallas needs one of their bigs to become a stretch 4/5. Otherwise, Lively and Gafford is a little too redundant.
