So although I’m sure the #Cavs would love to keep Isaac Okoro, it may not be cost effective for a team looking to contend for titles

  1. The cavs don’t have a choice but to extend him. Even if they eventually trade him. Teams with little to no salary cap can’t afford to let talent walk for nothing

Could someone elaborate what he means by this? How much will Okoro cost us and is this true, that the Cavs may not re-sign him because of cost effectiveness?

The Cavs aren’t contending for Titles, unless they have some big move planned.

He is too valuable to let walk. Dude is our best perimeter defender at 23 and improves every year. We don’t have the assets to replace him with someone of equal talent and potential

I’ll say it since no one else will. Cedi is/was a better player for us when given minutes than Okoro ever was.

Here come the down votes. He’s right.

We have Dean Wade, Caris LeVert, Jaylon Tyson, Isaac Okoro, and Max Strus.

Wade can play 2 positions (SF/PF) at minimum and play defense fairly well while being able to score from the outside.

Max Strus can also play 2 positions (SG/SF) and is able to score from the outside and, whole not great defense, he definitely plays scrappy defense.

LeVert can play 3 positions (PG/SG/SF), plays good defense, and is always a threat for an offensive explosion.

And now the team has invested a 1st round pick in a similar-sized wing with a higher upside offensively on a rookie contract in Jaylen Tyson.

It only makes sense to retain Okoro if he were a multiple-tool player, but he’s not. Yes, he’s great defensively, but it’s never enough to offset any deficiencies on offense the team might deal with.

The only way he stays with the Cavs is if the market has already determined that he isn’t worth what he is looking for. This is Anderson Varajao all over again, but I would take prime Andy over Okoro.

It doesn’t make much sense for the Cavs to overpay for someone who isn’t necessarily guaranteed to start or play a strong part in Atkinson’s rotation, especially if the intent is to contend.

It’s worth noting that eventually the Cavs will need to be wary of the new salary aprons that make expensive rosters very difficult to navigate. Okoro is obviously an excellent defender, but if his shot never develops and he continues to be a liability in the playoffs, he might not be as tradeable as one might assume if he gets overpaid. Nevertheless, it would be a tough loss if he is not re-signed.

Cost effective? As opposed to what… where else is that money going? This team can’t sign FAs and doesn’t have trade assets. Letting Okoro walk would be completely brain dead.

People will argue to keep him but honestly it depends on the cost.

Sure he’s improved in the regular season but has been unplayable in the playoffs. That’s not even an argument. It’s a true statement.

Sure you never want an asset to walk, but it I’m perfectly fine with them not overpaying Okoro in the current CBA
