REPORT: Mavericks Sign & Trade For Kentavious Caldwell-Pope + Klay Thompson Interest | Mavs Rumors

[Music] welcome into Mavericks today Harrison Graham and Jeffrey Cooper steam we got a couple of rumors to hit uh following the Tim Hardway Jr trade one of these stories had been surfaced before the trade another one after some pretty interesting stuff so we’re going to get into that coming up in just a moment but Coupe tell the people why they should share this video yeah we’re trying to get this video out to as many as fans as we can and the super easy thing to help us do that is by sharing the video so go ahead and click that share button and then select the Twitter SLX icon and click post to Twitter you can tag me in the tweet and I’ll give you a shout out on a future show uh just be sure to shout out myself and Harrison we’ll uh we’ll get you guys taken care of so please we would love it if you guys would share the show uh and we have a lot of exciting stuff planned uh for the offseason here so can’t wait free agency getting going Sunday we’ll have our top free agent targets tomorrow so stay tuned for that as well let’s start with this report this one surfaced kind of the night of round two of the draft I believe cavius cwell Pope he opted out of his player option and Mark Stein had this to say League sources say that there would be mutual interest in free agency between cwell Pope and Dallas but uh Dallas could only get into cwell Pope’s projected salary via signed trade it’s believed that the Nuggets do not want to participate in a signing trade with an in conference rival look look I like kcp I know you do too he’s been on two of the last four finals uh winners uh the Lakers and the bubble he played a key role on uh the Nuggets team and Not only was he on those teams like he played clear roles and played well uh for those teams good three and D player uh you look at the numbers here he’s been a sniper from Deep for several years now going from Denver’s offense with jokic’s passing to a Luca offense where he’s ready to catch and shoot should be a seamless fit now obviously coupe the um the note from Mark Stein where he said that um Denver may not be willing to uh trade with the conference rival it’s like well if you’re going to lose him for nothing like what I mean would you rather lose him for nothing not knowing where he’s going to go or would you rather get back a piece or two which we’ll talk about in a minute here’s an interesting fact as well he might be commanding pretty big money here yeah Stein said that uh kcp could exceed the deal that his former teammate Bruce Brown got from the Indiana Pacers who was then obviously traded to Toronto in the Pascal seaka deal uh Brown signed a two-year $45 million deal last offseason with the player option after year one and look if kcp is getting more than that are we thinking it’s two for 50 like that’s a hefty price to pay uh if you’re the Dallas Mavericks and I know kcp is a good player but are you giving a guy like that $25 million yeah I mean that’s that’s a tough one you’d like to get him at like 18 to 20 but if he’s three for 75 2 for 50 like I mean I guess on a two-year deal I’d be open to it CU then you’re just aligning him up with a lot of your players and you know you’re you’re flexible in a couple of years but I don’t know like that that’s a lot of money and if it is going to be in that 20 plus range I think this is kind of the framework right I mean Josh Green Jaden Hardy and Dwight pal kind of get you to around 20 million so you know maybe trade for him give him three for 60 um again it whether or not Denver is willing to do it I don’t know but if you’re Denver ask yourself like are you going to find for sure one guy who could play a playoff rotation and Josh Green probably a second on that team that’s a little thin on its bench and Jaden Hardy obviously Dwight pal is not a guy that should be playing for a contender in the playoffs are you going to find a green and Hardy in free agency if you let cwell pop walk when you don’t have that much flexibility they’re already going to give Jamal Murray max deal they’re in the tax like yeah I mean if I’m the Nuggets I’m at least entertaining this because what are your other options out there yeah I don’t I don’t know what the nuggets are thinking I mean they’re obviously weighing the fact that KC that that kcp would really help the Mavs and make them a better team uh but at the same time they don’t want to lose him for nothing and this is an Avenue in which they can do that now maybe they find a sign and trade with another team and they they prefer team may ex exactly but yeah I mean if there if this is the deal that the Mavs are offering and they’re like here take it or leave it uh if if the Mavs are comfortable leaving in I could see the nuggets at least considering this offer I’m not saying it’s it’s a sure thing by any means but you’re finding a young player in in Jaden Hardy who showed that he’s not afraid of the moment can play in the postseason and then you have a guy in Josh Green who’s cost controllable for the next three seasons at right around 13 million a year so it it it’s an enticing deal I think but I’m not sure if the Nuggets would want to help out the Mavs in at the end of the but I hope they they they would if the M can end up agreeing to this de yeah I mean again if you’re Denver you basically just get a discount kcp with Josh Green who in theory still has the arrow pointing up how much that’s to be debated uh kyp’s he’s 31 man so like you know I I don’t know it it’ll be interesting to see this play out but uh I understand why the Mavs are interested they need more Wing help they need a guy who can uh knock down open threes what do you guys think would you do a sign and trade for kcp similar to that trade compensation type y for yes type in for no I think I’d do it especially if you can keep them around 20 22 a year I mean that still feels high but again if it’s on a two-year deal like that lines up with your win like a lot of your other contracts so I think I would probably pull the trigger on that now we broke down the Tim Hardway Jr trade earlier today talked about the Derek Jones impact of that deal Quenton Grimes coming over as well so go check that out hit the Subscribe button go to the content tab once you see this thumbnail click on it and uh you will uh be watching that video check out our other content too broke down the Mavs draft pick and a whole lot more and of course future content will be coming your way as well oh baby oh boy Clay Thompson now if this was one of those from Jake fiser or Michael Scot I’d be like H we’ll talk about it but it’s probably not that legit but again when Mark Stein talks about the Mavericks it’s relevant because I think he’s the most connected per Insider to that franchise Tim McMahon probably a close second but th this isn’t flip-flop fish saying brunson’s resigning with the Mavs this this is a legit you’re not going to see a Mark Stein uh quote tweet it’s r or no it’s uh it’s uh insert it’s insert free agent I’m so sorry y’all the real that won’t happen we so we trust Mark Stein when it comes to all the Mavericks news and rumors so and he he dropped this nugget right before we were about to film and he said that League sources tell the steinline which is his substat go check it out uh that the Mavericks with some new found flexibility after securing the Tim Hardaway to Detroit trade uh are another team intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson once he makes it to free agency that th those are a bunch of words what is intent on exploring the feasibility once free agency opens they’re going to call them I mean I don’t I don’t know what else that means but it means they’re interested on some level um again I it would have to be a sign and trade I I just wonder like what’s the money for clay at this point because I think if he was satisfied with what golden state was offering he would just go back there um so that tells me like he thinks he can still get 30 plus like I I don’t think the Mavs are paying that I don’t think so the question is is is anyone and if no one is then if you’re clay wouldn’t you just go back to Golden State for whatever they offer but maybe he’s just like H screw it i’m start over I don’t know yeah it it seems like that relationship with clay and golden state has soured a little bit over the last year or so they’ve kind of been trying to negotiate a deal and nothing’s really come close look Klay can still score the basketball man he’s still a very efficient three-point shooter 38.5% last year uh nine attempts as well average almost 18 a game as a whole he still can do it at a pretty high level where he has really falling off as is his defensive ability um he can’t guard anybody anymore like he is not a Plus on that end whereas he used to be one of the best the best defensive guards in the NBA and now he can’t do that at all so all things considered if the contracts are the same uh you would have a choice to make between kcp and Klay Thompson I believe and if they are the same I think I would offer Golden State the exact same sign in trade where the Mavs would be getting clay and it would be green Hardy and pal going the other way the safe move is definitely kcp you know what you have there like he’s not a star he’s not even an Allstar but he can start he can come off the bench he’ll give you probably 9 to 12 points and he’ll shoot 40 plus% from three and he’ll defend one through threes very well Klay Thompson can he get a little bit of the defense back that seems unlikely but he also has a better chance to be a 20-point score you would think he could he didn’t shoot bad from three last year but you you if someone out of those two is going to shoot 43 44% he’s probably more likely to do it um so it’s kind of what what do you want to gamble on do you want to gamble on Clay playing a little better than he did last year or do you want to kind of take the guaranteed 10 to 12 points 40% 3 and D that uh kcp is going to offer whereas clay probably isn’t going to defend that well I’d probably rather just take the sure thing because you’ve got I think enough scoring I know the finals would suggest otherwise but they also just couldn’t make a shot and kcp is going to help you there like you shot 17% on wide open Catch and shoot threes kcp is a knockdown shooter I’m going to I’m going to also value kyp’s defense as well I I think that’s a big factor in this if he shoots a little less from three but plays way better defense I think the pros outweigh the Cons with kcp uh but let us know down in the comments what you think would you rather have kcp or Klay Thompson I’m excited I think it’ll be a spirited debate down there in the comment section look if you told me Klay Thompson could be an above average Defender I’d gamble I don’t think he can be average I don’t think so either and if that’s the case like I don’t know I just I I think I’d rather goe ACP I mean I’m sure I’d TP myself into it if it happens of course we would are you kidding me yeah I just I don’t know it feels risky I mean here’s what I’m scared of Coupe you you sign him let’s just say it’s three for 75 you trade out green Hardy whatever you’re 25 games in and you’re like holy he’s he’s done like he’ll knock down the occasional three but that’s literally it it’s scary and then he had the ACL and the Achilles injury so he’s been healthy the last two years but like but his phys physical tools have been greatly diminished because of those injuries like are those going to come back at his age I doubt it I doubt it too yeah I I’m I’m taking kcp but let us know what you guys think uh just a quick note before we get out of here Dante xm’s deal is guaranteed tomorrow and Tim McMahon had the note that he’s fully in the Mavericks plan so his deal will be guaranteed uh he’ll be on the Mavericks roster next year at around $3 million or so an absolute steal for exm after he had a great season last year yeah and look I mean it was good to see him kind of bounce back in the finals obviously he wasn’t a huge factor in the playoff run but give him a little confidence boost into the off season because he played great in the regular season and you know I I would say all things equal he’ll have a rotation role in the regular season again and hopefully in the playoffs next year so um excited to have him great find by nicoo and the staff last year and uh hopefully he builds off the best season of his career uh coming tomorrow on the channel we will have veteran minimum targets we’re looking at 10 guys who the Mavericks can sign so please stay tuned for that then Sunday NBA free agency gets going uh if the map sign anybody or make a trade we’ll have you covered here on the channel so be sure to hit that subscribe button and don’t forget to share the video I’m giving shout outs uh on a future show so please do that peace out [Music]

Mavericks rumors after the Tim Hardaway Jr. trade for Quentin Grimes are HOT! NBA Insider Marc Stein is reporting that the Mavericks have interest in Nuggets wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope via sign & trade, but the Nuggers are hesitant to make a KCP trade with the Mavericks to not help out a conference rival. Stein also reports that the Mavs are interested in exploring signing Klay Thompson in 2024 NBA Free Agency, but that deal would also have to be a sign & trade of sorts. With NBA Free Agency just a couple of days away, Mavs GM Nico Harrison will be busy working the phones for the Mavericks going forward.

NBA insider Marc Stein (On KCP to the Mavs)
“League sources say that there would be mutual interest in free agency between Caldwell-Pope and the Dallas Mavericks … but Dallas could only get into Caldwell-Pope’s projected salary range via sign-and-trade. It is believed that the Nuggets do not want to participate in a sign-and-trade with an in-conference rival.”

Marc Stein on the Mavs potentially signing Klay Thompson in 2024 NBA Free Agency:
“League sources tell The Stein Line that the Dallas Mavericks, with some newfound financial flexibility after securing the Tim Hardaway Jr.-to-Detroit trade that I wrote about Tuesday (see the full Twitter thread here), are another team intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson once he makes it to free agency.”

  1. KCP over KT! What about J Grant, can we get him? But DJJ still needs to come back over green!

  2. Klay is a shell of what he used to be and shouldn’t be offered anything more than the veteran’s minimum at this point in his career.

  3. kyrie can easily transition what these 2 can do to being a two way and a catch and shoot player. we dont need these names brought up to the team rather have matisse on the team or just go for continuity

  4. The standard is the celtics, that means we need more firepower. The core is obviously luka, kyrie, lively, gafford, Washington, assuming djj comes back, after that grimes hopefully becomes another piece of that core then that makes trading hardy or green or exum in a package with Powell and kleber with picks to turn the back half of the roster into more talented in the middle of the roster. I don't want either of these guys, I would rather find a better option elsewhere.

  5. Klay seems to be the right bet if it is a reasonable contract as KCP's deal is too much of a cap hit along with trade comp being too high.
The only con with getting KT is if we can't resign DJJ but if the market ends up as a bidding war for his services then KT wouldn't be a bad pickup.

  6. Mavs dont need a shooting guard.
    They need a 6‘9, 6‘10, 3 and D wing/big, who can play help defense.
Its hard to find someone like this.

  7. Klay has been a great player, a star, but he has suffered significant injuries and is 34 years old. For the same price you can get Jerami Grant and Thybulle and you get points and defense.

  8. I don’t think green and Hardy money will be enough , you gotta match whatever amount he signs for.. so it would have to be kleber and green

  9. Andrew wiggins is a better scorer & a locked 🔒 down defender when he wants to play defense, I remember what he did against the boston celtics on defense giving brown & tatum problems

  10. They should just sign Klay as a coach to teach the role players how to hit wide open 3s

  11. I would have never imagined the mavericks would ever land the most craftiest finisher in NBA history (KAI) so the idea of picking up the 2nd best shooter in Golden state history is definitely tempting. He's 34 not 44

  12. its like your trading to get someone thats not really gonna be much better imrprovement to the team. i say lets keep looking

  13. I see Mavs fans in the comments falling in love with mid role players again on their team. Figured y’all would’ve learned by now it’s the only reason THJ, Powell, DFS, Maxi have and had been on this team for as long as they have and were. Y’all gotta stop getting attached to role players and mid ones at best. Don’t think I’ve seen a fanbase get mad at wanting to upgrade the talent level around Luka shit is funny meanwhile all the other teams are doing exactly that. People also need to get off of DJJ there are a bunch of dudes who would be and will be cheaper to fill DJJ’s role on this team stop with wanting to overpay for role players who are extremely limited.

  14. To be fair to Klay which a lot of Mavs fans and Warriors fans seem to shit on him for how do you expect and demand him to be the POA defender at his age and not to mention for a long time he was sharing the court with CP3, Curry, Draymond and Looney or even sometimes they went small with Draymond at the 5 and Kuminga at the 4. He didn’t have other guys the entire season to help take a burden away from him having to guard the best player and didn’t have a legit rim protector behind him helping him out. It’s no coincidence that post trade deadline Mavs had a top defense even with Luka and Kyrie it helps having a rim protector behind them all game. For the people who are saying oh his offense is declining etc the dude was asked to be the 2nd option and still averaged 18ppg on 39% from 3 on 9 attempts a game ( which is his worst of his career btw ) he averaged 14.7 shots per game for comparison THJ averaged 12.4 shots per game even with him losing a lot of minutes after the deadline and he attempted 7.6 3’s per game on 35%. On the Mavs he won’t need to be the POA defender or even be asked to guard the 2nd best player on the court because with the way the minutes structure works out and the roster there will always be 2 and maybe even 3 other defenders on the court with him so he doesn’t have to always be elite on defense and he will have Livley or Gafford behind him which people won’t want to drive to the rim which makes his life a shit ton easier.

  15. Die hard long time MFFL
You make that trade in a heartbeat. Green and hardy✌️. Don’t need green anymore now that we have grimes. Hardy still doesn’t stay in his role well. After he went one on four in game 1 against Boston I knew I was over with him. I still like hardy as a thj type but if losing him brings us a starting champion it’s a Nico no brainer

  16. I’d be shocked if they turned down Kleber for KCP. They could argue that, if healthy, Maxi is more valuable given his size than KCP. His ability to play with Gordon or Joker would be invaluable late in games. Replacing KCP would be easier given his size.
