Mikal Bridges Trade: The Brooklyn Nets Rebuilt in 2 Moves & Reset for the Future

on today’s show Mel Bridges gets traded by the Brooklyn Nets what does this mean for Brooklyn they get back a bunch of picks what are they going to do with them is it now open for business on a full rebuild we’ll talk to lockon Nets on today’s lock on NBA all right here with Doug Nory from locked on Nets talking about the male Bridges trade Doug the Nets just like rebuilt and reset with one Fell Swoop yeah I mean this is like a rarely floored really floored by anything that happens in the NBA because most of the here most things are just kind of I don’t know it’s some derivation of something that’s already happened this is pretty unprecedented I this one made me shoot out of bed honestly and and and we ran to we ran to record about it but trading male Bridges just a just the Nets and the Knicks trading anybody that would be grounds for like a pretty big story the fact that it’s your you know borderline franchise player the Knicks give up the entire draft from here until you know our kids are in college and Beyond and then resetting it past that with getting the the picks control back from Houston it’s there are not many examples in the NBA of something like this happening especially in such a short time so there’s a million ways to dissect this but just on a high level this is one of the truly like sort of wow moments you get in the NBA absolutely for for the Mel Bridges trade that you get five first the Nets get five first in this is he worth five first like what kind of player are the the Knicks getting in this okay so we say this all often is that you know the value of something if it’s your house it’s if your car if it’s your stocks it’s the value of some something that someone’s willing to pay for right so if somebody’s willing to pay for True capitalist over here that is then that is what it’s worth in this case sometimes what helps make increasing the value is when all your best friends want you to do something and they mean a lot to that organization and they mean a lot to that organization as well and that can sometimes make you overpay because that’s just what the guys in there want so is he worth it they get an incredible they get a very very good player who fits in perfectly with the with the Knicks do he’s on an amazing contract he had a very down year mostly from the fact of being miscast in a role that he was just sort of not ready for in a system that didn’t really wasn’t really built to maximize his talents and he looked worse because of it um if is he worth this I think they probably found the team that would have given this many picks I don’t think this would have happened in too many other situations because wouldn’t have been quote worth it because everyone else didn’t go to college with this guy but where’s Amari Spellman he’s still credit Ryan rako they gotta bring back um like so the but in general the Shawn marks was able to find the one partner that he knew probably would risk overpaying and if they all got together behind closed doors ahead of time and just kind of shook hands about it and that’s the way the NBA business gets done at this point that’s what it is so credit to Shawn marks I think on this one it’s never easy to trade with someone that you know is going to be you know a sub Subway ride away from your fans seeing if they especially if they go off and do really really well that’s not an easy thing to do which is why the Nick Nets and nicks never literally never ever ever trade with each other but so doing it with that team but getting back all of the picks from now to what feels like Infinity there’s something to be really said for that that return you guys in the the lock on mock draft that we did were shopping everybody and and like like trading off everybody your coost Adam was sending me messages deep into the night of like about all that trading everybody did you guys think that a re a full rebuild like those was going to start or do you even think that this is a full rebuild like let’s let’s start there it’s a full rebuild for sure if because because the thing is it only really works coinciding with the next thing that happened which was getting their pick control back from Houston yeah like the to what we advocated for a long time was trading Bridges under the one caveat that they also when doing that had to find a way to get back the pick control back from Houston they had to get the 225 swap back and get that removed get the 26 pick back and be able to really control their own tanking Destiny it was going to be one thing to trade Bridges which is why when the bridges trade comes in first and it’s the five picks I’m like wellow that’s pretty crazy they still have this other problem which is if they are bad then it just kind of feeds Houston’s coffers to then basically snap call the second trade which I mean obviously we’re working in conjunction with each other within minutes of that meant that they kind of planned it was I’m sure it was if this then that and if not this then not that right like I don’t think they were gonna do it both ways so I I think that is it a reset yeah of course I mean this is this reset this is as down to the studs as it gets they don’t have anybody now but when you’re headed toward a Cooper flag draft and you can and now and by the way way they have the Knicks pick which is unprotected Nicks are probably going to be good next year they have a Milwaukee they got back a Milwaukee one through four protected which is probably also not going to be good but they’re gonna go into two an awesome 20 25 draft with a chance to control their way into Cooper flag Ace Bailey one of these guys and Dylan Harper plus two other picks that is a full reset if there ever was one all right we’ve kind of we’ve kind of beat around the bush here a little bit explain the Nets Rockets trade that you said is it was like contingent for the Mel Bridges trade where they’re swapping picks because all of a sudden W tweets and I read it out loud and a friend of mine goes you’re just speaking a different language to me like they swapped this pick for this pick and this one for this one explain the deal why they did it why this was so important for the Mel Bridges deal to even go through okay I hope I get this right because this is there’s been a lot of information you kind of do at some point need a spreadsheet to track like all the picks and all the swaps and who and who has control of what basically what I believe happened and I feel this is pretty probably pretty much what it is is they essentially traded back the two the Nets owned the 2027 and 2029 Phoenix picks which were highly coveted picks because with the Phoenix maybe headed the death train down the track those picks could have looked really good in a few years if everything kind of fell apart there they traded those two picks for the essentially the the Rockets picks that had control from the James Harden trade which was the 2025 swap which is really important one obviously because of the how big that draft class is and the just the 2026 outright now they were already they were G almost locked into swapping with the Rockets next year because there’s almost no chance they were gonna be better than the Rockets like they were right so they were just they were which is by the way is what we saw this year they just conveyed a number three pick overall to Houston uh that one did not come back Houston is still taking that pick um but yeah think so they basically the easy way to say it is they traded the H the two Phoenix picks for the 25 and 26 the one I’m not sure about is the 27 swap um which I have not seen reported that they got back and so that one could still be in Houston’s hands I’m not I’m not positive so forgive me for not having like every little piece of information here there’s a lot of picks traded that is the one I’m just like not 100% sure on but um that that 27 swap so I’d be shocked if they didn’t get that back too I just haven’t really seen that exactly expressly reported from anybody um so it’s still unclear OKC mixes in with this swap thing but I I’m I’m feel very confident in saying the Rockets trading back the swap extinguished that part of the houst of the of the OKC swap with B with Brooklyn so long story short they they get all their picks back the problem that Nets had is they didn’t have their picks they have pretty much all of them back now by the start of the Season who would you be shocked is still on the Brooklyn Nets that is currently on the roster I’d be shocked if Dorian finy Smith was on the roster although I could be talked in that see the Nets at this point actually probably don’t need to do much else like now like like now they can probably sit back and wait they already have an absolute tank commander in Ben Simmons who makes all the money and barely plays like on the team like they could swap him though into worse money somewhere to get Capital back like you know if if a team wants them if you know if a team wanted to attach something and get off like LaVine or get off be like one of these guys Simmons’s contract which expires doesn’t look too bad to do that and that’s who are going to be bad and can just sit these guys out or whatever and not worry about it like they’re in an okay situation there so I know that’s not what you asked what you ask is who’s gonna be on B shock still on the team I think that right now it probably looks pretty much like it looks now and as the season goes it’ll look different they are not at risk of being good now the only risk the Nets have is being good because they need to be bad they need to to lose a lot of games this year to to get in to to spike those those draft odds the roster they have now is at no risk of being good I think that there’s lots of different ways it can go I think it brings the Nick Claxton free agency into real question about whether or not they even need to try to overpay him or not they they aren’t incentivized to do that at all I think the Simmons contract becomes really interesting I probably would just let it expire but who knows like what they end up doing cam Johnson probably is a guy that fits a lot of other teams needs if he’s healthy I could see him not being on the team anymore so I could see them going many many different ways now I don’t believe now they need to rush any of it because I think they can just let value unfold as it goes knowing that their only goal now is Young draft assets young players and draft assets before it was like hard to know that it was like well where are they standing are they waiting to build a team when another Superstar comes well that looks kind of different than this that this is this path is super super clean and clear if not I’ll be at risky so I don’t know I don’t know if I answered your question there’s there’s a lot to digest here La last Quick last Quick One if possible I know you’re a fantasy guy finish the sentence cam Thomas’s fantasy value just went well it depends because if you’re in efficiency League probably not too far be not too high because he’s gonna take a g jillion shots and I don’t know if they’re going to be all that efficient um he’s going to score a ton and he’s probably going to play a lot of of minutes um so I it definitely goes up because he’s going to take a lot of shots but I mean this guy could I mean there the usage rate might just be like obscene so uh fantasy wise if I know Josh you know Josh Lloyd would probably it clearly goes up like but I don’t know minutes go down there’s a lot of ways these kind of shake out being on a bad team sometimes is great and sometimes you get to the end of the season and you know like you’re looking at the Blazers guys playing some absolute no names for 42 minutes a game wondering what you’re doing with your life so I don’t know I don’t feel 100% confident about it go check
