Chris Paul Teaming Up With Wemby | Group Chat | Ringer NBA

[Music] [Music] all right now for part two of this free agency Bonanza Edition uh we are pivoting now to some of the big Ripple effects from the NBA draft and to do so we bring the formost expert in draft minutia just the the phone systems of of Florida businesses as he was telling us before we we jumped on here and many other things hi Kyle man hey how’s it going usually I get disparaged when when initially I get disparaged or insulted or like guilted in some way so I’m waiting for that to happen but I’m happy to be here I’ll take the praise you know I’m kind of on in the defensive I’m like what comes next usually varer kind of gets me with a dagger between the ribs where I’m like uh but I’m happy to be here I’ll accept your praise I love you guys and uh let’s uh hope I can help you glean some line on something Jason Justin I don’t think we’ve ever said a bad word about Kyle I don’t know where all this is coming from personally but you know you invite a guy in I think it was I think it was Indie I think Justin kept guilting me when we were in Indie and I was like this this dude and he hasn’t thought about it since clearly but maybe we could get through some of those unresolved issues here um but no we I I feel like some of these teams from the draft have had some pretty interesting after effects like going into free agency as we saw I mean probably the one deal that we didn’t talk about in our first segment which is probably relevant to this conversation and beyond that is just the Spurs who go after picking Ste Stefan Castle our guy from Yukon and then they pick up Chris Paul here in free agency what do you think about just that mix like do you think these two guys can coexist Kyle do you think like there’s much more of like a a a passing of the torch thing going on here that that castle needs uh but what do you think think in terms of phase two for Wy well you said our guy and he’s you know I like him but I mean he’s like your guy since you’re the you’re Theon obsessive right right um Castle just kind of fits everywhere I think especially if you have like a handling five I think you can probably get away a little bit more with and granted they they have other things to do Castle makes the most sense is I think he’s going to be a tough assignment Defender he’s very switchable he showed a lot of interest in being like having off ball motor which I think is uh an admirable thing for any basketball player these days so I mean he played in in a in a system that was sort of a high post cutting and screening thing and um I think he’s going to fit really well I think I think it it poses some questions about um it poses ite creates some dissonance I think between him and between Kellin and between soan because you know as much as uh San Antonio was willing to pass and move the ball last year the the spirit was willing but the flesh was very weak at times um they just arguably had multiple several mostly non-nba players at different times on the court um so I it it poses a question for me of just kind of like what are they going to do next there are other teams that are this is true of as well but so a guy like soan just creates you know Kell’s not exactly a knockdown shooter either I mean he’s got better but it just creates sort of like future questions for me if you like castle that much maybe he’s a cheaper version and you can kind of have flexibility to make moves for things you do need because I do think that Kellin and soan and and vasel have shown enough to have interest from other teams but that’s kind of where I’m thinking with that pck so far and it makes sense too when you put Chris Paul in that formula right if you have a point guard who is organizing everything now you get to mix and match the wings and say okay do we want more of a switchable designated Defender do we want more of a facilitator like soan do you want the sort of slasher and driver that Kelvin Johnson is or the kind of pick and roll catch and shoot guy like Devon Vell you have the full complement a variety of wings at your disposal now and you have a point guard who can actually make sense of them for the first time in in the wemi era so I think that honestly goes a long way I wonder what you guys think about the idea that the Spurs would trade out of that eighth pick and you know get basically two future first out to like 2030 or 2031 or whatever um because you know obviously there was a lot of chatter about oh they need to get talent in they need to be in a win now situation and trading for picks that are seven years away um is the opposite of that when you have the opportunity to add talent to your team I’m I’m just wondering because to my mind the Spurs front office haven’t done anything cool besides draft Wy number one in years so I I just wonder what like what that says about what they’re trying to do with the team yeah I mean the Chris Paul signing if anything as much as it fits like what you want around wemi is just kind of hitting the paws on any sort of meaningful progress right it’s just a suggestion that they’re going to take this thing painfully slow and so as like a fan of wemi and wanting to see him compete on the highest level this kind of really hurts my heart to a large degree as much as like I do think Paul will probably help them in small meaningful ways uh but the just means like they’re probably not going to compete at a high level next year is it painfully slow Chris Paul’s a veteran guy it’s not like they brought in a 19-year-old to run points B he’s going to play 35 games come on 35 games what was the number again was it 11 11 11 for how many years was the deal what was the what were the numbers on that I don’t have it FR me I actually didn’t see the terms yet yeah okay well I can’t imagine it’s too much it just made me wonder I mean there are obvious positives at bringing in Chris Paul I mean he he is sort of the the pick and roll like Guru I think he kind of did that as much as the the relationship between him and DeAndre Aton was just him shouting at DeAndre Aon um I don’t think that’s going to be the case with wimy I think that like it’s a nice just sort of um nice little sort of um tutorial for him for this year you know he’s he is a good he’s brilliant basketball player he works with you just hear countless stories of young guards I’ll be surprised sometimes about like players that he’s worked with I’m like oh I didn’t even know he was connected to that person um I mean it’ll be good on that front it makes me wonder um are they going to are they done is the question question are we are we positive that like that CP is the end of that line of thinking because on paper like w was saying why not Dillingham you know because everything that I heard about Dillingham you know other than the stuff people are have been weird about like the dond academy stuff everything connected to that it seems like he’s had some weird situations with like who’s around him you hear you hear that every single year year in and year out with with prospects and it’s hard to know or even speak on Authority with any Authority or or confidence but I just think that it was weird for me because Dillingham is such an ultra Talent maybe Minnesota was just in a better I guess I’m shifting to Dillingham a little bit here but it was in a better situation to sort of protect him defensively or you know their their team was more ready to sort of put him in a good position whereas in San Antonio you just throw Dillingham out there it’s going to be a lot Messier in the short term because as talented and Brilliant as he was um people haven’t mentioned the fact that I mean he would disappear for long stretches he was even at the college level a huge defensive Target a lot of the time so um I don’t know it but circling all the way back it just makes me wonder if they’re done do you guys think that they’re done in terms of like making a move or adding another you know adding more point guard Talent maybe for now but yeah this is why I would almost say why not both like I would have loved a universe where they have Paul and dingham together and Chris Paul’s teaching him as much as helping the rest of the team along and that way you don’t have to worry about CP being an older player who’s only going to play however many games he plays or however many minutes he plays there’s a there’s a larger project at work versus now you know you have CP for however much you have him and however long you have him but otherwise you have more or less at present the same core Plus ston Castle so we know that team isn’t good enough even with another year of development they do need to make meaningful additions I just don’t know that to your point Justin they’ve expressed the urgency through this deal to reflect that they are willing to do that just yet yeah and I’d almost split the difference there where it’s like Yeah The Fan in me is a little disappointed but I almost wonder if longterm this might pay off in a big way because I’ve been thinking about this we all talk about maybe shortterm like Superstar upgrades specifically at the point guard spot for them Trey young Darius Garland Etc everyone’s been talking about would they fit with the Spurs and I’m like if you have wemi who in his first year has suggested to be one of the best players on the planet already shouldn’t we be thinking bigger than that like shouldn’t we be actually targeting like when Luca donic could be a free agent couple years from now like we should be thinking on the highest level in terms of our big swing so a trade like that that’s going to potentially return maybe a good pick years down the road opens up that possibility as opposed to some of these more half measure moves which would make them better in the immediate so I kind of like it from that extent look I’m somebody who has a respect for job security and I’m happy when people have it but this is the you know this is the sort of downside of having freaking RC and and um pop in there as immovable objects because they just feel like they could do whatever the hell they want they don’t have to rush they don’t have to do anything nobody’s pressuring them to accomplish anything in the near future so they’re taking the TCT of oh we can be as painstakingly precise as we want or need to be um and that’s the approach they take I think a different regime in there would be like look we have this generational Talent he’s he’s put it on the floor like he’s shown that he’s going to be a special guy let’s you know hit the gas on this thing but when you when you can’t be fired you don’t have to worry about doing things in the immediate that might not be so like you know future focused but when you are that concerned with the immediate you go the Dell Demps in New Orleans route sure and put that kind of like mid veteran team around Anthony Davis or you go the Donnie Nelson route in Dallas and over invest in vet veterans when maybe it would have been better to slow play it this is obviously the great philosophical part of having a player like wemi does he push you forward with urgency because he’s so good or does he buy you time because he’s so good I kind of air on the side of buying time and I think if if you can afford and he’s willing to take one more year at a relatively slow pace of gradual Improvement take the win you know take the job security take the patience if if your player will afford you to do that

The guys react to the San Antonio Spurs’ landing of Chris Paul and what that means for not only the Spurs’ roster rebuild, but also the career progression of Victor Wembanyama.

  1. Front office hasn’t done anything cool in years??! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Dejounte trade landing 2 UNPROTECTED firsts plus a swap. What about the fact that they traded away players right when Wemby was available? How about grabbing CP3 to train brand new #4 pick and show Wemby how to unlock his powers. What about Sitting on treasure trove of picks (5 maybe 6 next year alone) + cap space to trade up and down the 2025 draft plus maybe grab some top free agents?! Thank god this man isn’t running a franchise. Atlantas front office was being run by the owners kid just like this and Look how that turned out 😆 ( I guess we should be thanking him) This guy probably kills his 2k teams too. Don’t let him kill y’all’s show.

  2. It is future focused, you just want the big moves but that’s why you don’t work for an nba team and we just have to listen to your asinine opinions

  3. These guys have no idea what they’re talking about. They want the spurs front office to make rash, short-sighted decisions. Could they have gone all in on getting someone like Trae young? Sure but even then they’re a play-in team who’s given up future assets. 2025 will be a big draft for the Spurs. They’ll potentially have 2 lottery picks and have a lot of flexibility during free agency. If they don’t make big additions then, I’ll understand the criticism but for now, they’re playing it smart. The young guys will keep growing and be ready to meaningfully compete in a year or 2.

  4. Wosny's takes have never impressed me. "The Spurs front office hasn't done anything cool in 10 years." What is that?? They are trying to build a long term championship contending team not get clicks. The Spurs are doing this methodically. Sorry it's not fast enough for some people. Ask how long it took OKC and Minnesota to be competitive.

  5. Hearing Wos talk about the spurs makes me lose brain cells, what a garbage take. Every one of these guys is being extremely short sighted

  6. The whole narrative around this draft is that it was garbage and basically like starting at pick 6-8 in a normal draft. And now the spurs are getting shit on for trading out of it for an unprotected first and a top 1 protected swap? So fucking stupid man

  7. I love bringing in Paul. The Castle pick and the trade of 8 are highly questionable, however

  8. Chris Paul can be a mentor for castle like how he was for SGA, shai himself will tell you how big Paul was for his development. Cp3 basically just realized his championship window is over so now he’s leaving his mark by being a mentor for the next group of guys

  9. Yeah, this is a bad discussion. They've only missed the playoffs since 2020 after making it every year since 1997. What opportunities have they had to make "cool" moves? The Castle pick is the only top 8 pick they have had since…Sean Elliott? And the URGENCY 1 DAY INTO FREE AGENCY shouldn't even be a discussion. One guy says why wouldn't you draft Dillingham when they traded for two future 1st and the next guy wonders why they aren't thinking long term about Luka when they didn't even make the moves you're comparing them to?

    Just nonsensical.

  10. Those T wolf's pick happen when wemby is in his prime and when the wolfs are out of it. Ant man's max contract is due at that time he might go elsewhere. High picks. Spurs are using that cap space for other moves. They are not done adding and trading this year. We fave 5 point guards on the roster right now. People are leaving. RC doesn't make these decisions anymore. Bryan Wright does. We have 5 possible picks in 2025 too. I wouldn't be in a hurry either.

  11. Rob Dillingham a dynamic and talented player but everyone is acting like he's an All-Star already. He hasn't played a single minute of NBA basketball and there are plenty of question marks, particularly on the defensive end. There's a small chance he gets played off the court, especially in the playoffs.

  12. “We can be painstakingly precise” …is that a bad thing? I’d rather patience than brash short sighted win now trades

  13. Wos forever hates on the spurs lol f you mean the only good thing cool they have pulled off was draft Wemby dafawk!!! That’s kinda a big deal. You do realize trading white n Murray and not being aggressive on assets and loading up on picks was to get em 🤦🏽‍♂️

  14. Interesting take in this video 🤔😬

CP3 will elevate the Spurs immediately. There will be a ton of CP3 —> Wemby lob highlights.

CP3 will also help bring maturity to the locker room.

CP3 will also expedite Castle’s development.

And commitment is only for one year & for only $11 million.

Spurs get better, expedites development, & CP3 gets to start.

Everyone wins. This is a great move by the Spurs 🔥

  15. Y’all are killing me over here. This is the best situation for us in San Antonio, and benefits everyone on the team regardless of position

  16. It’s more about if you listen to SGA Chris Paul had a huge influence on him so I think the Spurs are trying to do the same for Castle. GSG

  17. Why the hell should the spurs be quick in rebuilding? So they can go out in the first round the next 3 years and then have no assets. So closed minded
