Derrick White agrees to 4-year $125M extension | CBS Sports

[Music] we have some breaking news to bring you out of the NBA here on HQ where the Boston Celtics and guard drik white have come to terms on a four-year extension worth nearly $126 million that is according to ESPN White had one more year left on his previous contract and now this deal ensures that Boston will keep its starting backward intact for years to come Drew holiday agreed to a four-year extension in April now since arriving in Boston in a trade from the Spurs in 2022 white has been a vital factor in Boston success helping the Celtics reach two NBA finals and of course their 18th title just two weeks ago Ashley Nicole Moss is here with us on HQ to discuss this breaking news Derek white he is going to be sticking in Boston for the foreseeable future it is a four-year contract extension worth up to nearly $126 million your initial reaction when you hear about Boston wasting no time making sure that Derek white is going to be there with true holiday for years to come yeah and as they shouldn’t have know when you’re coming off of a championship and you have seen just how well connected this team was and is you try to retain all the pieces possible when you talk about Derek white it’s interesting right because the Boston Globe actually reported back in October that these conversations were happening and ultimately they fell through a lot of Boston Celtics fans were very concerned that Derek white would end up walking although he had a year remaining on his deal you want to lock in the guys you see potential in Derek white went on to have an absolutely phenomenal season with the Boston cel CS not just in the regular season but also in the postseason I mean you look at his numbers here averaging 15 points per game five assists four rebounds shooting almost 40% from the three you see the career ranks there second best best best and second best I mean he went ahead and showcased that he is a reliable option for the Boston Celtics not only offensively but defensively and listen the Celtics have done a really good job and we keep talking about this and it’s a blueprint that I think a lot of teams are taking notice of at one point in time it was all about the super teams and how many All Stars you can get on a roster to go ahead and microwave yourself a championship it worked for a moment in time there you know the heat did it some other teams did it and then what happened is you saw teams like the Nets try to recreate that magic the Suns tried to recreate that magic and the league has drastically changed what the league is now is what we’re seeing the Boston Celtics do it’s retaining pieces that play well together and going ahead and dealing with the trials and tribulations that come with building a really well-rounded deep team on both sides of the ball the Bost and Celtics have done that tremendously well and they’re doing what they’re supposed to do in the off SE season keep as many of those pieces together and hopefully put yourself in a position to run it back year after year after year yeah we just saw the stats there not only but playing on on both sides of the ball second Team all defense the last two seasons shooting like you mentioned 40% from three um when you think about him you think about Drew holiday already the Celtics they they are sacked they are the favorites to win the East the favorites to to repeat one of the favorites I should say how much more confidence do you have in the Celtics when they’re making moves like this to go back and repeat because you have to have a little bit of luck and you think about health and all of those things but when you see what they’re doing and retaining some of those key pieces is it more of a a lock I guess I I know first of all it’s a trick question you know I’m a I know you’re a but I’m just say you’re putting me in an awkward position I know but you just have to think about it um is it just you know solidifying the sense that they can run it back absolutely I mean again you talk about chemistry you talk about continuity and when you start having to pay guys what they very much deserve you always run the risk of losing what made you special in the first place and when you talk about the Boston Celtics it’s the fact that yes you have Tatum you have brown but On Any Given night it can be any other player it could be a porzingis it could be a Drew holiday it could be a Derek white game and that is what made them so dead throughout the playoffs and throughout the regular season so the fact that they have put themselves in the position to go ahead and run it back essentially with the same team now again you know some pieces around the margins may fall and that’s what you expect but keeping your core unit together is just so impressive it’s exactly what every front office should go ahead and try to mimic to the best of their ability and yeah because of that you do give the Boston Celtics The Edge they’re coming off of a championship you have no choice but to give them number number one in the East once again going into next season so there are still some more contracts to be dealt with and things to work out Jason Tatum being there as G get very paid yes so and I guess that’s kind of leads me to my next question if you’re seeing Derek white does that have any impact on Jason Tatum whether it’s the timing the money what have you or at all Jason Tatum is going to get that $315 million plus deal before the season starts Jason Tatum is a huge part of what makes the Boston Celtics successful yes Jaylen Brown won MVP not only in the Conference Finals but in the NBA Finals that does not negate what Jason Tatum means to this team Derek white very happy that he got his money but Jason Tatum is next up I will be surprised if before the summer is over he does not have a deal it is coming right around the corner and Ash something else you want to touch on because there are some reports coming out about the Boston Celtics majority ownership group um saying the Investment Group purchased the team in 2002 um planning to make the franchise available for sale um a massive thing going on for one of the most valuable teams in all of sports when you hear that what’s going through your mind it makes sense I mean when you are hot and when you are a team that has a lot of Promise a lot of future you go ahead and you try to strike while their iron is hot we see that with the timber Wes right and the all these situations that are going on with trying to figure out a a ownership group or an individual to go ahead and buy that team the Timberwolves are on their way up you want to capitalize while the team is hot the Boston Celtics have never been hotter they have never been a team that you can’t they’ve never been more of a safe bet and I use that Loosely because in the NBA anything can happen when you think about the Eastern Conference as long as something abysmal and just catastrophic doesn’t happen this is a team that is going to be in the conversation for many many years whether or not they two- Pete three repeat different conversation but they’re going to be in the mix for years and years to come and if you want to go ahead and get a return on your investment and maybe a little bit extra on the side you go ahead and you sell while they’re hot and the Celtics are hot yeah we just saw top five right there most valuable franchises in the NBA 4.7 on that list you saw you saw who’s on that list right the Knicks were there I just want to put that out just wanted to make sure everyone noticed that the Knicks were on that list maybe if they they win a championship they’ll move you know higher up the list your lips to God’s ears ja I’m trying to speak it
