BONUS MINI-POD: Klay Thompson to Dallas Mavericks. Are the Lakers Running out of Options?

hello and welcome to a special bonus Monday mini locked on Lakers podcast Klay Thompson is off to Dallas in a sign in trade who is left for the Lakers to potentially acquire via free agency or trade get into that [Music] next you are locked on Lakers your daily Los Angeles Lakers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your Team every day and thanks for making lock on leg is your first listen wherever you get your podcast Monday through Friday always free never behind a pay wall and locked on Lakers on YouTube is where you can hang out with a community of almost 25,000 subscribers really awesome fun smart respectful group of audience very engaged leave comments we often use them as part of the show I’m Andy kinety co-host of lock on Lakers my brother Brian is unavailable but wanted to just do a quick reaction video to the news broken by Adrien wowski from ESPN quote free agent Klay Thompson plans to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year $50 million deal that includes a player option sources told ESPN’s Adrian rinowski ending his historic run with the Golden State Warriors Thompson’s move to Dallas comes as part of a multi-trade multi-te signning trade that will send Maverick’s guard Josh Green to Charlotte sources said Thompson had fouryear offers for more money but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth Championship with the Mavs as well as difference in state taxes now wge was not specific as to whether or not the offers with four years Andor more money specifically came from the Lakers but I would say given the Lakers were by multiple uh multiple media reports very engaged in talks for Klay Thompson I’m willing to at least for the time being till we otherwise assume that they were at least putting out a legitimate offer for Klay Thompson ultimately he ends up deciding to play in Dallas um I can see reasons that Dallas would be more appealing for clay they by definition are closer to a championship because they were just in the finals I also think that with k with with uh Luca donic and Kyrie Irving there is less of a a lift 82 season game um in the regular season for clay as there would be on a team with LeBron and AD both coming off an Olympic run talked about this many times the ever dayers will be familiar with it I do think the the issue that comes with LeBron having to Pace himself at this stage of his career does mean that even with all the producing that he does and he produces at a level that is quite literally unprecedented for any type of player his age it is astonishing that he can still do this there is definitely a level of pacing himself and there is a level of other stuff being left for some of the players around him namely defense and for somebody like clay who I believe is 35 himself that could appealing um it’s interesting I I put out a poll in the YouTube Community section asking our viewers whether or not they were excited at the prospect of Klay Thompson joining the Lakers um the four choices were awesome not my first choice but solid pickup not terrible but not great either or pass and awesome got 44% and that was the clubhouse leader so I imagine there’s going there’s going to be Laker fans unhappy about this for what it’s worth I wasn’t particularly all that wild about the clay option to begin with um I I think at this stage of his career we’ve seen the decline particularly on the defensive end that has come after multiple leg related you know Achilles ACL we’ve seen that damage come in his scoring is still at times pretty lethal and he is capable of getting on an occasional role and the guy will be able to hit from Deep for the rest of his life in his sleep but even his offense is starting to grow less efficient he’s become much more three-point Centric three-point dependent and again defensively he’s not the clay that he used to be so for what it’s worth I’m not all that upset by this what’s interesting though and we’re going to get into more of this for the full show on Tuesday with Brian just where do the Lakers go from here because you know there had been the report uh Rich Paul telling ESPN that LeBron would be willing to take a pay cut um to try to help the Lakers if it was to acquire a player of a certain statue some of the names included James Harden who was never realistic to begin with but he’s staying with the Clippers two years 70 million reportedly um Jonas valent chunis who joined the Wizards for three and3 and now Klay Thompson those were the guys on the list I as I said at the time when we talked about this for Monday’s show I can’t imagine that the list is three players and that’s it um Demar de rozan could be an option he’s been linked to the Lakers for years Joe C I believe that’s how you pronounce his name uh Bulls reporter for the Chicago Sun Times reported today that Demar D rozan who isn’t impending free agent will not be sticking around in Chicago um D rozan is is an interesting option for the Lakers he’s got some minuses particularly defensively but offensively he is somebody that can really help the team out he’s become I think a a really really underrated playmaker beyond the mid-range scoring everybody knows he’s capable of maybe there are trade options with the Brooklyn Nets for Dorian finy Smith Andor cam Johnson the Blazers for Jeremy Grant Wizards Kyle kosma I hope uh a trade for Zack LaVine or Trey young is off the table but you know for the time being it’s it’s a possibility until you know that it’s not um so it’ll be interesting to see where the Lakers go with this you know we’ve talked about before they have a full roster right now so they’re going to have to manufacture space you know salary dumping one of their veteran minimum guys or Maxwell Lewis maybe a Jaylen hood chafino or trying to create a trade where they send two players out for one you know there there’s a lot on Rob Pink’s plate now anyway but it’s going to be interesting to see where the Lakers go moving forward because many of the names that seemingly felt impactful to LeBron and also I get a sense are impactful in the eyes of Laker fans um they’re starting to come off the board so we’ll see where everything goes from here um again locked on Lakers on YouTube is where you can hang out with this awesome Community before we go want to make sure that everybody knows Today’s Show is brought The Lakers are trying to find ways to upgrade the roster, and in less than 24 hours since free agency opened, the names attached to them have been flying off the board. James Harden. Jonas Valanciunus. And now Klay Thompson, who felt like the guy with the best odds, between having grown up in L.A. rooting for the Lakers, his father Mychal’s past/current ties to the team, and positional fit. Well, that’s now null and void. So who’s next for the Lakers to chase? Andy Kamenetzky breaks it all down.

  1. When I seen the news about klay earlier today I felt sick to my stomach and pissed the fk offfff!!! wtf are we doing didn’t get klay didn’t get the big man didn’t get shit

  2. I've said almost from the jump ball on this offseason that the road to a productive offseason was through Chicago…. And here we are. We couldn't live with our own failure (and bad faith trade proposals from organizations still mad that Jerry West gifted Kobe, Pau Gasol) so it led right back to Chicago. Now go get Demar and/or the guy Bron originally wanted to play with here in Lonzo. Pivot to Lavine if nothing else if they dont want to do even that.

  3. Classic andy blaming LeBron having to coast in games for another pelinka failure. I dont understand how Anthony davis is the best player on the team but everyone is worried about lebrons motor? Why no mention of AD when hes the best player?

The Lakers and their fans can only blame lebron for their problems for 2-3 more seasons then realize it wasnt his fault but the front offices when they are in an even worse situation than they are now

  4. I always knew he’d be the first to leave. Happy he went to Dallas. Hope he gets his fifth.

  5. Rob seemingly had no plan ABC. He has a news conference tomorrow introducing Knecht and Bronny. Bet he doesn't answer any questions.

  6. I was split on the Klay prospect. So I am not mad. Actually kind of relieved. A good 3and d is what this team needs the most.

  7. Nothing to loose sleep over here for Lakers fans. KT is way past his prime so I am glad they didn't get him. Be curious to see what the pivot move is IF there is one

  8. Only wanted Klay because his dad was a Laker BUT he is not the player he used to be. Didn't want Harden for obvious reason or Valencunis. Plenty of time for the Lakers to pick up a good player that fits what the team needs

  9. We as fans are always going to be enthralled by big name free agents like Klay, but 4 years is not a good contract for someone who is 35 and declining. Fans complain about DLo, but what has Klay done over the past year? He was bad in last year's playoff series loss against the Lakers, he was benched for a period of games this past season, and was awful in a must win play in game this year that saw the Warriors get blown and miss they playoffs. I too like the Klay coming home story, but at some point, it's going to look like a bad contract to have on their books.

  10. Seems to be slim pickings on the trade market this summer. Hopefully the front office can land the right man on production ability today, rather than on past glories, as some of the names touted arround are likely accelerating on the downward spiral.

  11. The name Klay Thompson is better than the current actual player. Last year Klay hit 3s at 38.7%; Prince hit 39.6%, DLO hit 41.5%, Rui hit 39.7%, LeBron hit 41.0%. What are we missing? Knect is projected to hit 39% as well.

  12. We moved on. Klay not built for the spotlight. Taking less to go to mavs instead of Lakers $20m. We dodged a bullet. Klay didn't make an impact on his last season w/ Warriors, hence, they kicked out from by Kings! There's still time! Be patient Laker fans!

  13. Klay NOT making an impact and ousted by Kings during playin! Lakers dodged the ball on Klay! There's a better player. Lakers offered $20m via S&T DLo, but Warriors doesn't want a player in return. Sadly Pelinka also incompetent & too slow to make a move in finding a 3rd team to absorb DLo. Lakers got incompetent owner & front office!!!

  14. I’m a fan of this show, not some of these Laker “love/hate”, bi-polarism, neurotic fans, toward their own team. The GM isn’t trash. Nor, any of their players. A piece or two will make the difference. It’s not over. There are still other Shooters, Centers, etc….

  15. rob's legacy…. not bringing back the logo Jerry West, pushing Magic Johnson to quit his job for the Lakers, low balling Ty Lue and not hiring Jason Kidd, firing multiple coaches, low balling Dan Hurley and not having the insight that they had no shot at Dan Hurley and embarrassing the franchise over a very long weekend, Trading away Kuzma and KCP for Westbrook(and don't blame James, Rob is the GM and if Jerry West was in charge he would have done what he thought was best for the franchise which he did time and time again when he was running the lakers. Remember Jerry traded Shaq, and Jerry refused to trade Worth for Magic Johnson's best friend Mark Aguirre. Lets continue.. low balling Alex Caruso to take a laker discount and then even after owning his bird rights not willing to go over cap to keep him and then investing that money on THT, drafting Jalen Hood Schifino over a seasoned pick last year and then instead of hiring a phil jackson zen master type coach that can coach super stars he hires JJ Reddick who has 0 coaching experience. oh and just one more to add sprinkles on top, to piss off Phil Handy who's the best coach they have actually had for the last few years and is one of the most trusted assistant coaches coaching in the NBA

  16. Using all grades between A+ through C-
    without repeating.
    Rate these trade targets.

    Trae Young $43,031,940
    Zach Lavine $43,031,940
    Darius Garland $36,725,670
    Donovan Mitchell $35,410,310
    Jerami Grant $29,793,104
    Anfernee Simons $25,892,857
    Marcus Smart $19,960,285
    Lauri Markkanen $18,044,544
    Wendell Carter $11,950,000

  17. Gosh darn it, something is always blocking poor Rob from doing his job, we can keep using this excuse til the end of time

  18. Look at it from Klay Thompson’s perspective if you were him what do you want to play behind Austin Reeves?

  19. Klay to Dallas is not the loss here folks

The loss here is the time we wasted pursuing someone we were never going to get in the first place who would not have even provided that which we most need

We could have gone hard Drummond or Val

And I promise you, the rebounding they would provide would help this Lakers team more than all. But maybe 10 or 15 players in the entire League

  20. 3 years at 50 millions is not what the lakers had to offer. I don't understand how everyone knew we could only give klay 15 million or less and now are shocked he is a maverick? Lakers fans really think LeBron was going to sign at the minimum lol

  21. I'd rather try to get DFS and Cam Johnson from Nets than overpay Klay…reportedly $80M over 4 years?! Pelinka trying to over pay again for a guy that went 0 – 10 in an elimination game with injury history. No thanks. Separately, you know why we couldn't get Dejounte Murray? Pelinka wasn't offering two first round picks or 1 pick + Austin Reaves. Lets get real Laker fans.

  22. Are we sure we did not dodge the bullet with Klay? Are we sure LBJ worth multi year Max at his age? I'm afraid we'll see the steep decline in his game over next couple years. Lakers are not winning championship with tinkering current roster. I'd like to push restart earlier than later and begin proper team building.

  23. After this, Lakers are truly a joke franchise. Wasting Bron's last years (though part of it is Bron's fault for wanting Westbrook so bad).

  24. If you are upset that we missed Klay then you aren't paying attention.
The real loss is that we missed out on guys like Val and Drummond while waiting for Klay (whom we NEVER had a shot at).
Either one of them would have helped THIS team more than all but maybe 15 other players in the entire league

  25. Pelinka must upgrade the Lakers roster. Jerami Grant, Caleb Martin, Miles Bridges, Gary Trent Jr, Saddiq Bey, Dorian Finney Smith, Walker Kessler, Xavier Tillman, Brook Lopez, etc are still out there.

  26. A disinterested LeBron plays better D than Luka….
3 of the Mavs starters are a minus on D….i would rather have Lakers go after an athletic big man that fixes the rebounding issues… And Trade DLo and salary fillers and a pick for a solid (not old) role player

  27. Hell i have much love for klay, but we DODGED A MAJOR BULLET not trading for klay! Klays legs are shot! He had 2 CATASTROPHIC injuries & there were CATASTROPHIC aftershocks that came with those injuries! Proof: in the 2023 PLAYOFFS when we dethroned the CHAMPION warriors, klay couldn't stay in front of AUSTIN Reeves or LONNIE Walker the 4th, who was too athletic for klay, & as a result klay had no legs, & left game 6 with a 3-17 stinker/ in the 2024 play in game klay couldn't keep up with the young athletic greyhounds of Sacramento, and once again his legs turned into putty, & he left with another 0/10 stinker!

  28. Here, we go again with judging people in their worst moments as if your god and they have to answer to you. Bridges was out of the league and went through the courts. But somehow, he needs to show others who weren't involved remorse.
