🚨 BREAKING: Donovan Mitchell agrees to max extension with Cavaliers | Get Up

welcome back to get up we got breaking news and for that let’s go to our senior NBA Insider Adrien wowski wge what do you have for us Brian massive news for the Cleveland Cavaliers Donovan Mitchell their five-time All-Star guard has agreed to a three-year 50.3 million contract extension that includes a player option in 2027 that would allow a pathway uh for Mitchell to do another extension then uh with 10 years of NBA service that would make him eligible for a 5ye $380 million plus extension so now the cabs uh they have Donovan Mitchell under contract Beyond this next season and listen a big big part of this is the relationship Mitchell has built with this organization with Kobe Alman their president my gany their GM uh and his excitement for where this organization is and where he thinks they can go they met Saturday in Los Angeles uh Donovan Mitchell his agent uh Austin Brown who’s the co-head of basketball at CA uh with uh Kobe Alman and really laid out together a vision a partnership for how they imagine this going for the future and Donovan Mitchell uh committing now to this three-year 50.3 million extension mention uh he’s under contract now guaranteed 4 years $185 million but you know this is a Cleveland team that got to the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs Kenny ainson is their new coach uh but Donovan Mitchell commits here uh to a fairly long-term deal with this Cavaliers organization and again uh he can opt out of this deal in 27 and then he’s eligible for a Jason Tatum like deal uh that could potentially be worth with the new money’s coming in the league maybe nearly $400 million Brian well that that that’s key when you talked about the relationship there uh W because you know obviously they got a new coach they’re in Cleveland and at at one point there were people saying that maybe Donovan Mitchell Wayne want to leave Cleveland come to New York but it seems that he’s happy with the direction there and that’s the reason why for resigning there in Cleveland W no absolutely Brian and I talked to Donovan Mitchell at the end of the season just after they were elim ated um by Boston and he said to me I am happy in Cleveland and uh I am proud of what we’ve done so far that he knows he wants to do more he doesn’t want to be part of a team that’s you know just a perennial conference semifinalist he thinks and and and rightly so there’s a pathway in Cleveland with the emergence of Evan Mobley they got an All-Star Center and Jared Allen uh the growth of this young group and and some belief uh with the arrival of Kenny ainson uh that they can Elevate this team um but you know he’s he’s really liked his time in Cleveland he believes in this management this ownership group and they are all in on uh Donovan Mitchell and again they met over the weekend they agreed on this on Saturday this didn’t just happen today um but certainly for Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs they they are locked down together moving forward and they’ll continue to try to build that Cavaliers uh Team um to take on Boston Philly uh New York in the East it’s breaking news and it is a w bomb Donovan Mitchell three years $150 million extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers thank you wge uh that is part of some big news here as we welcome you back here on get up coming to you live from the sea port brought to you by Chase gentlemen we got to talk about that because uh Donovan Mitchell resigning there with the Cavaliers and listen you you know this as well there was a lot of talk about maybe Donovan Mitchell wanting to come back home to New York but obviously staying there in Cleveland yeah I mean it was the connection with the Knicks that that he was hoping to have at some point the Knicks had an opportunity to trade for him two years ago decided not to do it and so therefore he ended up in Cleveland and there was always this thought that that was a temporary stay but things changed in New York by the way the direction the Knicks went in and so that opportunity to come here which the Knicks were very interested in him it just wasn’t going to happen now for here I think for Cleveland it’s his ability now to put 10 toes down in Cleveland and to stay there and he has a new coach in Kenny ainson and Kenny ainson is a New York guy as well and I think that they’re going to can I believe they’ve already had conversations I think they’re going to connect really well there and so this is something that he does have the ability in 2026 to make a decision either I will think about opting out or I will sign an extension to stay here even longer so it does give him some flexibility but it also gives him that ability to put all the conversation away that he’s now a Cavalier for good Tim you know he averaged I’m talking about Mitchell 285 and five in those two seasons in C look he averaged 30 in the playoffs I mean this kid bald out there for Cleveland yeah look Donovan Mitchell when the Cavs traded for him they had said they had Evan Moy they had Darius scarlin Jared Allen they could create a big four with those guys and they thought it would be enough to get Donovan Mitchell to stick around for a while and it has worked and he is going to commit there now for a couple years this was always to me the way this is going to land where Donovan Mitchell signs this 2 plus1 extension it’s the right extension for him to sign because in a couple years as Adrien laid out he will then be eligible for the 35% Max where he’s making almost $400 million which is a ton of money and it then gives him the optionality if he doesn’t really like the way things are going over the next couple years in Cleveland he can maybe say hey maybe we do something different down the road as opposed to locking in for four or five years so makes sense on all sides two things there are two things that you have to know about this and that’s it one is the second biggest contract signing in the history of the Cavs franchise after LeBron returning in 2014 that speaks to how important and how how the high stakes this was because of what they traded for him the second thing is you can put whatever you want on the bottom screen you can qualify it this is a two-year contract he has two the Cavs now have two years to do it because he would face being going into the last year of his deal in two years so even getting two years is terrific for the Cavs especially with where they’re positioned so the Cavs should absolutely celebrate this and absolutely keep their nose to the grindstone [Music]

Adrian Wojnarowski joins Get Up to report on All-Star G Donovan Mitchell committing to a 3-year/$150.3 million maximum contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers despite the Cavs moving on from head coach J.B. Bickerstaff with the hiring of Kenny Atkinson.

  1. Mitchell wanting to leave the Cavs was an entirely media driven narrative. He at no point ever mentioned wanting to go anywhere else. Prior to being traded to Cleveland, sure I believe he mentioned wanting to play for the Knicks as a kid.

However, pretty much every pro athlete that grows up in North America has a favorite sports team that they'd want to play for when they grow up. That doesn't mean things don't change once they become adults and get into the league.

A pro sports team has a lot to do with the actual people that run the organization and your teammates. If you like the people that run the organization, that's not something you should want to give up. Not to mention if you paid attention to the games in Cleveland, they love Mitchell.

You don't get that kind of support in big markets, it's just the reality of the situation. There's a reason why so many baseball players end up not liking playing for the Yankees when they sign a big free agent contract there.

  2. Mitchell can love everything about it. But the truth of the matter is the Cavs are probably 6th at best in the East. Celtics, Knicks, Pacers, 76ers, Magic/Bucks are all better than the Cavs

  3. More evidence that ESPN doesn't have a clue. He was always resigning with Cavs because they could offer him the most money. No other team could due to Birds Rights.

  4. Who cares Mitchell never went even to a conference final even with stacked teams lol, He's the james harden 2.0 he fumbles every post season.

  5. NO! NO, NO, NO, NOOOOOOOOOOO!
    NOOOOOOOOOOO
    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
THIS IS NOT HOW THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO GO.

  6. I love Mitchell but I don’t wanna hear how he has no help in the playoffs he made this decision congrats on the bag tho

  7. cavs still middle of the pack in the east. donovan shoot too many 3s at a below avg %. his game relies on streaky burst of offense instead consistency.

  8. How they give Paul George $212 deal but gave this man $150 lmao he literally carries the team

  9. Lots of salty people in the comments. To bad your favorite team didn't get him for you bench player and second round pick like 95% of the trade proposals that were out there.

  10. What a time we live in when the cavs have a better shot at making the finals than the lakers.

  11. People can’t afford single family homes or groceries yet this money is thrown around d at guts that have done nothing in the league. Sad times to live in

  12. HA HA! I hope this shuts up dumb Knicks fans trying to argue with me saying Donovan Mitchell is taking a pay cut to come to NY (which would have to be a MLE or Vet Minimum, btw). Listen kids, "Cash Rules Everything Around Me!" Don't be foolish.

  13. Heyyyyyy Donovan, congrats on the new deal. Great back court in Mobley and Allen. Now get Donovan some help offensively.

  14. Mitchell is still getting traded every1 knows that the teams that have cap room are like utah portland he not signing with any of those squads so secure the bag sign short term youre still on a playoff team n see if a big market team like houston will trade for him ina yr or 2

  15. Too bad the cavs have been failing in free agency and dont have the shooting they need to be a Boston. The need to make some moves get some spot up shooters

  16. So Cleveland basically has 2 seasons to build a team that can get to where Spida wants to go.

  17. with Mitchell resigning,, kills all the bs, Lescum coming back to Cleveland,, which was never going to happen

  18. If he retires a cavalier in his late 30s+ he will go down as Ohio's favorite Cavs player of all time. Lebron left cavs twice. If you know Ohio loyalty is HUGE!! AND Donovan is a absolute baller. Imo very underrated.Fans are buying his jersey right now. Wait and see.

  19. mobley and garland gotta play better though man. meanwhile bucks and heat just chilling
