ESPN Aussie Hoops Hour: Josh Green traded to Charlotte & big decisions loom for Boomers | (Full Ep)

welcome back into the ESPN Aussie Hoops how came Pitman alongside alen olich once again after a short Hiatus but the basketball news never really stopped but this is a perfect time to dive back in uh and start to get some regular podcasts back into your ears because it’s international basketball season alen and we are going to talk plenty of Boomers they’re all in Melbourne right now they’re getting ready for these games against China and this is really where the Olympic preparation starts but we’ve also got the NBA draft we had NBA free agency and we know the Opals obviously in town as well so we over the next few weeks we’re going to talk Opals as well but I think for today it’s going to be mostly centered around the NBA guys uh because there’s plenty happening and overnight as we record this on Tuesday morning we had a anothera boomer traded the third in the last two weeks yeah it’s all happening right I’m so I’m here in Melbourne everyone is here uh and then over the past like two weeks we’ve had like the back end of the NBA finals which included some Australians the NBA draft which included some Australians uh the post-draft sort of fler signings where everyone signs everywhere that included some Australians and now we’re going straight into sort of Boomers Camp Olympic prep things like that the Olympics is a few weeks away we’ve got exhibition games coming up the fight to make this Boomers team is sick right now speak to anyone around and this is maybe the hardest team that a Boomers coach has ever had have to pick um and so this is it’s it’s all happening it’s yeah I’m I’m I I want to go through all this stuff within the Boomers because there’s a lot there’s a lot going on um some guys are playing sneakily well some guys are not playing too well so uh let’s let’s let’s get a crack at this yeah let’s dive straight in and and as we said uh with these games in fact there’s a game tonight Melbourne time Australia and China or the Boomers and China so as these games go on and the Opals are playing on the alternate day so we’re not going to dive in and try and break down what we think is going to happen mostly because the big story here is what the squad looks like for Paris not what necessarily is going to happen in this matchups against China that’s not really of Interest right now it’s certainly the team and the big pitcher Squad but as I said news overnight Adrian wowski dropped this one in the afternoon here in the US uh in the early hours of Australia so Josh Green tied up into Klay Thompson expected move away from Golden State a sign and trade there’s multiple teams tied up here let’s just focus on Josh Green for now because Klay Thompson to Dallas is very interesting for basketball fans but Josh Green to Charlotte we discussed this when he originally signed this contract yes it was a nice Payday for Josh Green 3 years $41 million but when you get around that1 to15 million per year it also makes you highly highly tradable so I think you know big picture it’s not a massive surprise that Josh green has been attached to a trade uh but I can also understand if you’re sitting at home thinking this is a big shame because two weeks ago we saw this guy playing manyal minutes in the NBA finals and you hoped that he was going to be on a contending team moving forward that’s not really going to be the case in Charlotte so a major change of scenery for Josh Green yeah we sort of we sort of we as you said we flagged this pretty early it was a team-friendly deal I forget I always forget that he’s still just 23 as well he he feels like a veteran um and he looked like one as well in game five of that that final series um and he played really well the last taste that mass fans would have had of Josh Green was that him hitting a bunch of Threes playing really good D looking like one of the only good players on the floor in that game five he now hits to Charlotte and it’s it’s sort of like a on one hand it’s unfortunate because he’s been part of the sort of foundation of that Mavs team there weren’t many guys who were there for multiple years right it was it was sort of Luca Max uh Dwight pal Josh Green right there weren’t many of those guys um and so it’s unfortunate he leaves that it’s a team that is a win now team and so he sort of has to put winning behind him and go toward an opportunity that I think is probably better for him he’s really never had the opportunity to make mistakes um on a team he’s always been in a win now environment there’s always been pressure and expectation that does stunt developments to an extent and I think we saw that we saw sort of a lack of consistency and things like that I think going to Charlotte gives him an opportunity I think to probably start at the three uh on a team that isn’t quite at the start of a rebuild but they’re a year or two into it so there’s no real expectation to win so hopefully we can see whatever the ceiling of Josh Green is I don’t think he was going to reach it in Dallas uh just because of the makeup of that team I think there’s a far better chance of him reaching that ceiling in Charlotte uh hopefully probably playing what 25 30 minutes a game consistently proba starting next to a young core of lamelo ball and Brandon Miller and these guys no you’re exactly right and that’s why Charlotte’s just been an absolute No Man’s Land team for a number of years now so that’s why I get if everyone at home is saying this isn’t good for Josh green but I think this ties into Dyson Daniels as well we’ll touch on that trade that with these Boomers guys we’ve spoke about it before uh last week I was at the NBA draft and I I asked Johnny Fury about this I said yeah why is it that all these Australian guys are the same in terms of come into the NBA with a pretty good defensive credentials but the offensive game needs to improve now what that can do if you go to a winning situation like Josh green has and really like Dyson Daniels did it was a little bit different in New Orleans because they were younger but they were trying to win those guys can make a whole stack of money and Josh green has already with his contract so he’s already established himself as a as a credential role player in the NBA but the thing that I sit back and wonder is can they do more offensively and if you stay in the winning scenario you’re just not going to get the opportunity to expand your offensive game so when you when you look through the numbers and we go with Josh Green first so he made 72 threp pointers this year 69 of them were assisted because he’s not doing anything off the dribble you’re playing with Luka donic you’re playing with Kyrie Irving so 83% of his baskets overall were assisted I want to find out what he can do with the ball in his hands when it’s not just standing in the corner waiting for Luka kovi now that was his maximized role in Dallas but the question that we don’t really know with Josh green and Dyson Daniels is can they be better than that and I think it’s going to be better for them individually but it’s also going to be better for the Boomers moving forward because as we get into that Squad chat there are a lot of guys that are the same really really damn good players but I I think it’s going to be fun for us to watch but also for them even if it means maybe you’re not winning as many games to see what they can do and maybe their ceiling is a guy that makes a bunch of money as a role player for over a decade in the NBA and if that’s the case that’s cool but that’s find out while they’re in their early 20s and not get to 27 28 years old and always sit back and go gee I wonder if those guys could have done more so that’s what intrigues me yeah coming out of college and and out of high school I watched Josh Green at IMG Academy in high school he was he was like a go-to guy he was you know the the first or second option and and a lot of these guys are right every role player that gets to the NBA is a first or second option good basketball player totally and then but then he got to college he went to Arizona and he was still the number one or two option on that team and you would see him come off on balls or attack the paint and and have an in between game and unfortunately just on the Mavericks you just don’t need to do that when you’re playing next to luuka Don you just have to stand in Corners hit spot up threes and be a good cutter and then guard really well that’s really all you need to do when you compare the start of like Josh Green’s career to the start of Josh giddy’s career there it’s night and day right because Josh giddy went into to a situation where there was no expectation to win and Oklahoma City had the ball in his hand so had the opportunity to grow make a ton of plays make a ton of mistakes and then ultimately you have a better idea of what his ceiling could be uh it was similar to I think Dante exen in Utah where he came in and there was an expectation to win pretty early and so you’re not really given much of a leash and when you’re not given a leash then all of a sudden you you have a bun you have you can have 10 good games in a row where you’re scoring 10 plus points hitting a bunch of three is guarding really well you have two bad games and then you bench for a few games right that’s just the nature of being on a contending team um and so the same thing will go for Dyson Daniels who again the Pelicans haven’t been contending but they’ve been trying to win yeah and so if Dyson Daniels hasn’t been playing well he’s just been benched that’s just the reality of it now he goes to a team that is presumably about to start a rebuild of some sort or a retooling of of some capacity and hopefully we’ll get a better opportunity to see what his ceiling is um and yeah I think the role that Josh Green is about to play on the Boomers where he is the I think the second or third option or at least the second or third initiator of that team I think that’s more of the role he’ll play in Charlotte so like I think we’re going to see with gidy at these Olympics the sort of the role that I think he excels in as the the P first point guard the primary initiator I think we’ll see that in Chicago I think what we’re going to see from Josh Green in this Boomers campaign is sort of a a tease of what we’re going to see of Josh Green in Charlotte and I’m excited because I I don’t know what his ceing is there we have we’ve seen little indicators of yeah he can he can shoot it in stretches and he’s a really good athlete and he can guard so well but what the ceiling is I have no idea but this is going to be a really good like appetizer to Charlotte and we’ll we’ll get an idea of how how high that upside is yeah I agree and I said this when we discussed Josh giddy to Chicago in one of our programs nothing but net on ESPN the other week I said I know that people are going to say well you’re just biased because you’re Australian and you’re saying that the upside is there but your point about Josh Green I think is spot on that definitely giddy but Josh Green will be to a little bit of a lesser extent but the same the role is going to be expanded so my prediction on that show was at the end of the Olympics you’re going to see a few people write articles like wait a second did the Bulls actually get a a steal here with the guy because they’ll be reminded what it actually looks like when Josh gidd is not just standing in the corner now the Boomers have to win games and if they go on an extended run that’s going to help that because probably Josh gidd is going to be the star there but Josh Green could be similar where you know Charlotte fans probably I don’t know how much they’ve watched of Dallas I don’t know how much they’ve watched of Josh green but they might get a little bit of a surprise he was around 8.3 points per game last year on that team where I assume they’re going to give him a chance and an opportunity to do different things it wouldn’t surprise me if he bumped up to 13 to 15 points per game next year that wouldn’t surprise me at all the volume is going to go up uh with his scoring opportunities I would say that the other thing for Charlotte new head coach Charles Lee comes in there he’s a guy that’s highly credentialed under Mike buher for a number of years then with the Boston Celtics for a number of years so it is really a a new a new day in Charlotte in terms of how the franchise looks in a different direction and uh I think that they’re going to be more exciting than they were in the past and of course hopefully lamelo ball actually plays a little bit more basketball as well but overall for all three of these Boomers that have been traded I think it’s going to be a different scenario for New Orleans I love that New Orleans team and I’m still going to love watching them next year but when you had all the guards and wings that the had with Trey Murphy and Herb Jones and Brandon Ingram was there at the time and CJ mcllin was playing then you get to the postseason and Alvarado’s get in at those minutes as well um there just wasn’t room for Dyson and he he got a DMP in the playing game last season this year his minutes went down to about three or four minutes per game in the postseason so I think for him it was time and probably better for him to go somewhere else because he’s already proven that he is legitimately an elite defender in the league we don’t really know what he can do on the other side of the floor but that’s why he was getting squeezed off the court yeah and I think I think that’s important just generally for Australian fans to understand which is this wasn’t the teams not wanting these players no um this is these players having value um the the giddy one was a unique one because it was it was a conversation on both sides and ultimately it it seemed like a a fit that that’s best for everybody uh but when it came to Dyson Daniels Josh greed these are just uh promising players on friendly contracts and so they were Prime bait to be traded that’s just that just is what it is um I’m excited to see what Dyson D looks like somewhere else uh I know that Charlotte has wanted Josh Green for a good amount of time I know they tried they tried to trade for him at the deadline last season so they’re a team that has wanted him uh obviously Charles Lee is new but presumably trading for him now presumably he wants him too um and so they gave up two seconds for him the hope is that they’ve traded for him to utilize him and again he’s just 23 so he is ostensibly four or five years away from his Prime and he’s already been practically all the way in a in a season he he’s just got to a game five of an NBA Finals where he was a consistent rotation player at 23 that means something so we can see him play next to lamelo ball similar to how he played next to Luca donic lamelo ball is not luuka donic but you can see the similarities um and then hopefully we see the expanded part of his game so I’m very excited all right let’s move on to the Boomers now and obviously Josh giddy’s a part of that probably no need at this point we discussed it I kind of said I don’t know we need to break down that trade we think that there’s going to be a bigger opportunity but that one obviously was a little while ago now so we’ll move on to the Boomers they’re playing tonight as we record this on Tuesday if you’re listening to it after you would have got your first Glimpse at the team 7:30 pm tip off uh that is John Kane Arena I believe uh yes it is uh of course if you’re not at the arena though you can watch it on ESPN uh KO there as well so that’s the the only place or the best place to watch the the Boomers over the next few days and get your first look at this team that’s uh all in Mel right now so I’m going to throw to you here because you’ve been around the training camp the last few days you throw the topics out we’ll go back and forth so where do you want to start with this Boomer Squad that currently stands at 17 uh and we understand uh will just reduce a little bit over the next week here all right first thing I’m going to throw out there these games vers China yes don’t go watch them of of course it’s a really good opportunity see Lu said that good advice to start that’s very strong no rust with this podcast no it’s a really good opportunity to see these Boomers guys in action if you’re in Melbourne go watch them great you don’t get to see these guys play often Olympics every four years World Cups every every four years you don’t get this opportunity often go do that go watch them however uh this China team is not expected to be a strong one in any way I don’t know how many uh meaningful indicators we’re going to get from watching this team go up against China I feel like it would have I I feel like it probably would have been more effective just to watch this squad go up against like an emerging Boomer squad or an all NBL squad or something like that the standard would have been slightly higher um so that’s that’s out there let’s get that out of the way um this Boomers Camp is so interesting because when I ask everybody around it when I speak to whomever here in Melbourne there is a consensus that this team is perhaps going to be the hardest Boomers team that’s ever been picked and that’s because there’s maybe seven or eight locks I think that I think everyone sort of understands who those locks are and then you’ve got maybe like eight guys fighting for for four or five spots and there are players who are going to miss that you thought would would be on this team there are players who you didn’t think would even be contenent you thought that they were here just because good on you you got a camp invite who were going to make this team and I think we have to be prepared for that and the the the thing that then comes like the it then follows that someone making a team means that you have to make a different decision over here right so I’ll put I’ll throw this one out there Jack McVey is someone who I’m sure everyone’s heard a lot of he’s been he’s been doing very well at Boomers Camp right if the team was chosen today I think Jack McVey makes the team he is trending toward making it now going in he was maybe an he was I think a flyer I think a smokey to make the team but I wasn’t he was sort of like on the bubble for me now that I think he is in strong intention to make it you have to shift a lot of different things because he’s going in there for someone who is maybe one of those versatile bigs maybe like maybe for a k maybe for a cooks and so if you bring Jack mcy man do you need some more insurance at the big spot does that mean that magne makes the team are you about to have two Tasmania Jack Jumpers in this Boomer team for Paris there there are so many like flow on effects from picking certain guys that I don’t know who’s going to make this final team I’ve got a list of like the four or five dudes who are probably competing for those last two or three spots but I really can’t pick it um like I I’ll put this out like I think there are some locks giddy Patty exom Green landal Thal locks in my mind I think Dyson Daniels will make this team so in that world there’s eight dudes who are locks and you got four spots left and I spoke with Gorge after camp on Saturday I still I still get get the sense that he doesn’t know what direction he wants to go in well it it’s interesting because the one thing I would say with Gorge from you know Chats on the record or off the Record is that he’s always been pretty strong on it so the fact that in terms of his decisions and he feels very comfortable and it seems like someone that has a direction to go so it’s fascinating that you say that at this point heading in and I’m sure he’s got his ideas so I’m curious that you say that about McVey though because I think and this is I think one of the bigger decisions because you know for me I’m looking at Jack mcy and as you pointed to Nick Kay’s in that mix and Jack White and I think like that’s the type of player because if you just look at it positionally which way you’re going to go I think again you look at guys that are very similar and guys that have been there before and Nick K’s obviously been a stall W for this team now over the last few major tournaments but when I was looking at it and I pulled it up here so this was May 17th so about six weeks ago now when I did the last time I said okay this is what I think is going to be my final 12 based on stuff that I’m hearing people that I’m talking to and just a little bit of my opinion I had McVey in there and part of it was because when we talk about guys that we just did like Josh Green Dyson Daniels we know that they’re on the upward trajectory we know that they’re going to have great careers but I think you also have to pick guys that are in really good form and have played in an expanded role that you think they’re going to need to use at time so that’s why had Jack mcy there because I think he brings the versatility that we’ve seen yes it’s in the NBL but in big games there now over an extended period of time that I maybe the competition goes up a little bit when you’re talking about some of the teams they’re going to play but I think that there is a confidence that he can come in and bring something different that you maybe not necessarily getting from some of those other guys that would play that three4 position on this team so that’s why I had him in there I I think the the big man discussion is interesting because you mentioned mag I’ve been pretty strong on this the whole way through that I just can’t see how with all the decisions you’ve got to make that you’re going to take three centers with landal wath and magn and I just can’t see that wath and land aren’t going to be there I’ve got them two as locks as well I think magn might be one of the last Cuts because we saw it in Tokyo if something goes wrong and you have an injury one of your big men you definitely want that third guy but just to carry him as an insurance in a 12-man squad that’s going to be terribly difficult to decide I don’t see it personally yeah so so and reath that going right they’re they’re in they’re in the team um the the reason why Gorge still feels undecided on which direction to go is because he really hasn’t got uh meaningful eyes on this team yet because we’re recording this on a Tuesday as of Monday that was the first time that the entire group worked out together because Josh Green was largely sitting out just because he’s coming off a deep playoff run Dante Egen only arrived in Australia on either uh Friday or Saturday so he he had his first run yesterday and so he just hasn’t had eyes on the team so he doesn’t hasn’t really Gorge hasn’t really got an idea of what he wants to surround that Core group with he knows the core is giddy green exom bigs right he knows what that is and thible and so it’s right what do we need next to it do we and and he’s he spoke to me about it on the record and there’s a story on espn.com about it is do we do we want shooting and if you want shooting you’ve got Jack McVey there do you want the versatile defense which is you know your Xavier Cooks Jack White do you want experience which is Joe Les uh the experience is also someone like Nick Kay who can guard in in in different areas too so he’s he’s still just unsure um the the potential of that third big I think is higher than you think um purely because of the potential of someone getting injured um oh and the fact that you’re going to have to go up against some of these teams with Elite bigs and what happens if someone gets in foul trouble and you need to throw a legitimate big body out there now the other thing that could work against magnet is that he’s also injury prone and so do you bring someone who is historically injury prone in a campaign that’s going to last for for potentially 20 30 days is that is that a risk that you’re taking so these these are all things that uh the coaching staff is considering um but as of right now it feels like there’s no mind being paid to uh Legacy or whether you feel like you deserve to be on this team or whether none of that matters there is there is no Joe Engles is not a lock on this team Joe Engles is fighting for his spot on this team in the same way that Xavier Cooks is in the same way that McVey and Jack White and Nick K and all these guys are those locks are locks because I think their resume is dictated and they fit a sty of play that Gorge wants everyone else is is fighting to make it and in my mind there are there are four spots and 1 2 3 4 five 6 seven there there are eight guys who I think are legitimately fighting for it and don’t can at Matthew delova either there there is enough smoke around here that Matthew delov is someone who Gorge may see is someone who can actually uh be on this team and actually make an impact for this team okay so let’s let’s cut to the uh let’s cut through the because I think Cuts do you want you want to make some Cuts right now well I want to I want to uh get your opinion on how many changes you think there’s going to be because we all understand and I’ve said this even when I put out that Squad the other week and people throw in their uh different teams on social media and they respond and they’ll make the case for a guy and I’ve said this before almost every single time I’m just like yeah fair enough this is why I have gone in this direction but I think the case you’re making is you know makes some sense to me so here’s my other thing and again I I it’s been you know a few weeks now since I I spoke to Gorge and obviously I’m not around it like you are but one thing that I’ve carried through the last six months post World Cup is that I didn’t think based on what I’ve heard from players the coach was that the word continuity comes up every third sentence and lessons from the World Cup and keeping this squad together and they didn’t have a lot of time before that world cup with a new Squad so I also think that there is and this might be wrong might end up being wrong but I think that there is a a number of changes that might be the max that they actually want to make because they do want to carry a bunch of the guys that they had through with the World Cup so I in the end when I picked my squad I had two changes I had landow in which is the automatic one and and that wouldn’t have been a change anyway and then the other guy I had coming in was Jack mcf and then so I had Nick K and Jack White missing out that was the two changes I had from the World Cup squad do you think there’s a number that would make them feel uncomfortable and what do you think is realistic because I just can’t see them making three four five changes from that World Cup squad based on everything we’ve heard and seen over the last six months that seems that seems to go against everything what we’re told they believe I think H there’s there’s a part of it that yes continuity is not unimportant right it does matter uh but there’s also it’s been drilled into these guys this week just leading into Camp uh of how good they were in Tok and the areas that dropped off at the World Cup and in particular it was the defensive end so it was I think they were the number three half court defense in Tokyo that dropped off a lot uh they were the number one transition defense team in Tokyo and that dropped off in a significant way and so I think they might have been 19th at the World Cup so that end of the floor is important and when you look at the changes to the team I feel like that means more than trying to chase continuity um and so for example let’s say let’s say they leave Les off the team because there’s there’s some level of concern can you play patty Giddy and Les all at the same time I don’t think they think that um I don’t think anyone thinks that those three on the floor is an effective defensive team so Engles is fighting for a spot let’s say someone comes in for him what what if they put Matthew Dela do in for Joe Engles then you do sore up some stuff defensively yeah this the size isn’t the same but I think people do trust Matthew delova more defensively than Joe Engles are you really losing continuity at that point no or you I think he he feels he’s almost his own case um and that it’s a really good point you make and I I wanted to get to that because you’re exactly right like it feels like if you’re plugging Deli in it’s someone that has as much internal knowledge of the way that this go as anyone and he was there in Tokyo yes so Deli can plug and play yeah uh in any in any situation and also just because of the the way he plays the nature of how he plays um so like that’s one part of it putting let’s say you put McVey in the the question is is McVey coming in for one of those four spots one of those forward spots that is up for grabs or there’s a world where he comes in for for Chris Golding and if that’s the case then you can still have some flexibility with that for spot you can still bring you know Xavier cooks and Joe Engles or Xavier cooks and Nick K or Nick and Jack White you can pick whichever combination you want but that could potentially change things up when I watched practice on Saturday um Jack White yeah he plays a lot of the four but he was playing he was playing a lot of the three I think in what the Boomers do the three and the four are interchangeable he’s coming off handoffs he’s he’s hitting spot up threes he’s cutting to the rim so I think there’s some level of trust that McVey could play the three if he does come into this team um the again we I think everyone just has to be prepared that there are going to be some cuts on this team that are are going to be unpopular um whether it’s whether it’s Les or Jack White or or McVey or not bringing a third big in magne there’s going to be an unpopular pick um and I I don’t know who Gorge Gorge likes to have like an eight or nine man rotation as of now I don’t I think there’s an eight but there’s a ninth guy who’s going to be really important and I don’t know who that is right now it seems to be trending McVey and then the rest are sort of I don’t I want to say Insurance pieces but guys who you can plug and play in different areas depending on matchups um but right now that’s what the feel is things can change and there’s still a ton of Camp there’s still some Camp to go there are still two games to be played and these games are important yes it’s against a poor competition but this is gor’s first chance at seeing his eyes on this team um and who works off each other I think I don’t know if everyone’s going to play in today in in Tuesday’s game uh I think there’ll be limited minutes I think some guys will sit but this is this is a legitimate opportunity these guys are fighting for their spots tonight this isn’t just go out there and have a run no there there are three or four or five guys who if they don’t play well tonight that could spell the end of the Olympic campaign yes I would imagine when you talk about some of the guys coming off obviously playing the very very high level basketball but limited preparation LAN Australia I would think if the that AR playing ton they probably that are they can their bags they’re going which means to your point that we might see some of the other guys play and I think it’s a good point you make about the rotation we always talk about that you know if you’re playing nine 10 guys then I I can understand if someone sits back and says well the insurance if you’re going up against these big teams whether it’s Team USA whether it’s Nicole yic that you know might be in the C in course with the Boomers then yeah you should just have the 12th man that’s not going to play Big minutes anyway we’ve seen it in previous years in Tokyo it was Nathan soie that didn’t play much at the World Cup it was Dyson Daniels that didn’t play much so why wouldn’t you just take will magn and have him insurance so I think that’s definitely the case for the third big man uh outside of selections for the squad what else you got going on any other observations you’ve seen here over the last uh week or so oh it’s it’s interesting there are there are a lot of former Boomers in town which which I find interesting so Andrew bogot has been at every Boomers practice he’s he’s the one guy among these former Boomers who are watching and I say former Boomers you got guys like Brad new’s in there Adam Gibson Paul Rogers was in there Scott Fisher Damen Cotter is in town assistant coach with the bulls that was a late addition to sort of viewing party kidy got traded there Cotter was sort of planted in this Boomers Camp just to watch um but yeah bogot is the one who I think think is at these Boomers camps he speaks to the players he obviously played with a lot of them um and I think he has gorgees ear as well um Gorge puts a lot of stock in bogut’s opinion um and bogut’s one of the highest IQ basketball players to ever come out of Australia one of the highest IQ big man ever so his opinion does matter um so that’s that’s fun to see and then the other one is some of the younger guys who are in town so you’ve got Rocco zakari Alex Tui Ben henchel um I think that were supposed to leave a few days ago but they were asked now can you stay you’ve been you’ve been quality you know parts of this Camp you’ve you’ve been you you’ve made an impact this is helpful for us for you to be here so I think their stay was extended so they’re here for a few more days um but I think there there are glimpses that I get told of of Rocco looking really great that Alex Tui looking looking of the level which is impressive and Ben henchel while he’s still a little bit away clearly looking like a future Boomer in some respect so it this is this is what the the Boomers culture really is where it’s it’s everyone coming together and trying to Excel on the court working toward that common goal um and just working together that that’s the sort of Boomers culture that I think everyone appreciates yeah I like that that’s a good point that you bring up because uh we discussed the idea of would they take one of those young guys uh but I just think it’s got so challenging now with how deep this squad is and the fact that there is going to be legit players miss out that you know just bringing along the Young player to get them involved I think you can do it in other ways so the fact that they’re around this Camp I think is really productive obviously the other guy that was in the squad Johnny Fury but we’ve seen this before you know obviously he got drafted a few days ago to the Indiana Pacers he’s got a lot on his plate right now it probably was going to be challenging for him along the way but we have seen on espn.com.co at next year’s draft so if you’re talking about what it’s going to look like for the next World Cup when you’re trying to pick a squad yes but perhaps some of the older guys won’t be there necessarily but couple of the guys you mentioned Rocco who you would imagine is going to play more in the NBL this year and you would imagine that stock is probably not going to go down over the next 12 months to the draft Tes Proctor going into year three at Duke we’ll see what happens there and then the other guy you mentioned Alex Tui so the point being that I don’t think it’s going to get any easier and obviously then Fury the other guy who’s already made the NBA Luke Travis the guy we spoke about in the past so yeah I don’t think it’s going to get any easier for these guys in terms of what the training camps are going to look like and the squads you get to pick from yeah and I I’ll say this too uh when the squad was cut from 22 to 17 the the few names there were a lot of names that that went off that list but the notable ones were Rocco and Johnny Fury yeah um that was an indicator that this is a team that is going to compete the fluff is cool there is a lot of fluff around this Boomers program right it is there for show it is there for posturing but it doesn’t matter right what matters is the impact that these guys make on the court right because no matter how cool for example the culture looked going to the World Cup it didn’t matter because they didn’t even get out of okinowa so I think there’s there’s a sense that Brian Goron has that this team has to focus first and foremost about the product they put on the court and that means having an understanding that you can’t use that 12 spot on a kid with respect to those guys they’re just not going to make an impact at that level right now they will in the future but you need someone there as insurance whether that’s a magnet if you need an extra big whether that whether you need an extra shooter whether you need an extra versatile forward to bring that that needs to be a a spot that can play if he needs to um and I think I think that was the case with cutting those young guys I think it’s the case that they go they’re moving forward with and it it’s the case when we talk about them not using Legacy as any sort of indicator when picking this team and that means that Joe Engles of spot is not locked in he is fighting for it and he he very well may make it there is still a skill set there that is that could be useful to this Boomers team but he’s not a lock just because he’s Joe Engles and he could go to a fifth Olympics I don’t think Brian Goron cares about that in the same way that I don’t think Brian G Brian Goron cares that Patty Mills does he deserve to start I don’t think he I don’t think he does and I don’t think Brian Goron would Frank gon will start him if he is someone who should come off the bench for this team for the betterment of the onc Court product of this team I think Goron will make that decision I think he’ll make that decision when it comes to picking the captain of this team I think it’ll be someone who uh can can better rally the entire group I don’t I don’t I don’t think it’ll be Patty Mills I think he might pick one of those other sort of mid transitional guys whether that’s a landal or an exom or a green um there’s there’s this this program is going in a direction where it’s all eyeses are on the oncore product and and excelling there and everything else is taking a backseat and I I think that’s a good thing yeah and to your point I think the uh the leadership addition of jock landal is going to be big for this group as well was obviously uh a big hole that they didn’t have at the World Cup and the size Kane the size of Jo landal it was just missing right if if he could be terrible in Camp and he’s just so big and they were just missing that so just him coming in I get the leadership thing is is really important too he’s the bridge between the old and the new but the size was so important they missed it uh jock landow in and a A Renewed I think more developed doop wath I think that helps his team so much I think that’s maybe underrated yeah think about the six months that doops had a post World Cup if he was confident before the World Cup which uh he was I imagine he’s feeling even better about himself leading into this Olympics which is going to be big for him uh these games as we mentioned at John Kane Arena if you’re in Melbourne or you can make it down to Melbourne you should go to these whether it’s the Boomers or the Opals Boomers on Tuesday and Thursday night 7:30 p.m. Opals on Wednesday and Friday we got the rollers you got the gliders down there as well but the Boomers and Opals on ESPN uh so you can watch those games and uh the great manen will have some coverage across at espn.com.co we’re going to do another podcast post perhaps some trimming of the squad and we would have had a chance at that point to at least see what this rotation looks like in terms of guys getting opportunities so we’re going to have a lot more to bring to the table after we see this team and after after Brian gon finally gets to see this team Al together on the floor as well so before we wrap it up nothing final you want to throw on the table here Al uh just just like as a note I have I think the team will be cut uh after the second game I think it happens pretty imminently whether it’s directly after that game or the next morning so I think we’ll have a really good idea after that second game which is on the fourth of July uh who is the the final 12 on this team that’s going to Paris and then they’ll have I want to say uh basically a week before they go to Abu DHI for those games against Team USA and Serbia before they go on to Paris yeah that’s a little bit of a a ramp up in the opponents so we look forward to those games uh in a couple of weeks time as well on on the road to Paris so it’s going to be pretty fun here for both the Boomers and the Opals the Opals a little bit of an interesting Squad this week because obviously WNBA season continuing to roll on so once we get a bit of picture there we’ll try chat some Opals as well once we get a look at them on the road to Paris for both of those teams I think the Opals looking very strong from a squad perspective and what they could potentially do at the Olympics we’re going to break it all down remember espn.com.co 8:55 a am on Tuesday Morning impressive work by you I’m not sure I would have been start 8 a.m. it’s it’s an 8 a.m. podcast I’m not I’m not brave I’m not a hero but thank you all right all right well done we got an early riser here ladies and gentlemen this has been the ESPN aie Hoops we’re back and we’ll be back next week with some more chat this is international basketball season we’ve had fun we’ll chat to you guys next time
