Sean Cunningham gives updates on the Kings’ pursuit of Brandon Ingram & Lauri Markkanen

call or text at 916 339 [Music] 1140 joined by Shan Cunningham of Fox 40 sports reporter all things Kings and Sean was in the building for the Devin Carter intro press conference and we will get to that but Sean you know why you’re here the rumor mill is the rumor mill is hot but first and formost how you doing Sean Cunningham Oh I’m great I I’m one of the few people that really love hot weather and it’s kind of little too hot don’t get me wrong this is this ridiculous this is Extreme don’t get me wrong but uh I kind of kind of dig it I just don’t know that I dig it for like 12 straight days or whatever it feels like it might be no I’m in I’m I’m all in we did the thing what was that Chris last week or earlier this week when Dave asked would you rather 30 degrees or 100 or 110 and we were split Chris was cold weather I was I was warm weather so you know we’re we’re good there Sean we’re good there definitely I’m warm weather for sure thank you the question is will it be hot on the trade market with the Sacramento Kings as last week you had a piece and and came out with the report as far as Brandon Ingram and the Kings being interested in Brandon Ingram scoop B Robinson then added more to that separately as far as the the Pelicans and what they would want back what’s the latest that you’ve heard on the Brandon Ingram trade situation uh it’s been kind of quiet I think it’s you know it’s something that I think both teams know what they’re willing to uh part with uh I I there’s an understanding that Sacramento desires Brandon Ingram but you know can they get there remains to be seen I think there’s you know the Pelicans are certainly going to kick the tires in a lot of situations their team looks quite dramatically different since the opening of free agency obviously you factor in the trade with dejonte Murray um they’re much like Sacramento where they’re a win now and you could argue that they might even be a little more accelerated in that regard but when you look at the likes of herb Jones and Trey Murphy needing to take those that next step um certainly Brandon Ingram has been that figurehead that is going to be an attract a piece not only to other teams but um can they is there a willingness to keep him in New Orleans and it seems like it’s his time is coming to where it moves on does it happen this offseason does it happen before the season starts is it something that maybe gets a little closer to trade deadline kind of remains to be seen I think from a Sacramento standpoint though um their pathway of Landing Brandon Ingram in my opinion ultimately requires the addition of a third team to get something uh to get something done but uh it won’t be for lack of trying they’re going to they’re going to try and kick the tires and and whether it’s Brandon Ingram or or any other um you know offseason piece they’ve got a lot of offseason remaining and uh I know people don’t like that word patience or you know they kind of want to see things happen rather swiftly but the reality is sometimes that doesn’t happen yeah Sean I mean you you kind of talked about the trying element of this uh there seems to be a lot of people both on socials but I mean we’re getting calls we’re getting text about it as well uh about people having a fear I would call it of of Monty not being able to get a a deal done this offseason for one of these big fish targets do you share that that concern or or do you feel like um especially with you know not to put words in your mouth but with the Sasha and Davon thing that that things are are clearly trending in a certain direction that’s a tough question to answer if I understand it correctly because I feel like um like Monty McNair gets his own kind of like everyone’s looking at Monty mcir and yeah the spotlights kind of shining bright on the on this front office but kind of take a step back and look at the rest of the league think of someone like Danny a right I mean there’s a lot of smoke right now with this Lori Markin in uh situation and the reality is I think there’s half the league is interested in Lorie Markin and you look at his contract you look at what lies ahead I can tell you that you know I’ve had a lot of discussions recently uh within the past few days and I kind of think his people are looking forward to free agency and that they kind that kind of stalls any kind of real trade movement and from a Sacramento standpoint um puts them in the in the in kind of a unlikely to land Lori Markin in situation um especially if you’re looking at somebody like if Monty is looking at his team and obviously the attractive piece is Keegan Murray team control uh a prospect that has a very high ceiling who could possibly have this Ascend to a an All-Star type of position um do you part with that for somebody that you can’t guarantee that you’re going to be able to extend and keep in your team long term and the answer right there is a hard no so um without having some of those guarantees makes it really difficult I bring up Danny a for an example because Danny a typically doesn’t do trades unless he’s benefiting like tremendously from right like it’s hard trades yeah doesn’t lose trades he he he he’s a very difficult GM to to to make I’m not saying that Monty McNair is Danny a by any means but um you know I don’t think Monty McNair or this front office is going to operate as if they have their back against the wall and nobody should expect them to do that talking to Sean Cunningham of Fox 4y sports reporter Sean and I know that you you listen to the show and there are a lot of different names that have been getting thrown around so it’s Brandon Ingram Kyle kozma Lori marinin Zack LaVine are there any other names or Whispers that you have heard I mean Chris and I felt like the Jeremy Grant situation we were surprised that it’s not as loud because that timing over there with the Blazers seems a little off are there any other names that have not been talked about over and over again that maybe the Kings and maybe beyond the Kings teams might be interested in and that might be available we’ve discussed about a month ago Carl Anthony towns there were some Whispers any other names besides The Usual Suspects I mean certainly there’s names that that bubble about I think a lot of the names you’re referring to are stuff that get through the media um in conversations there’s a ton of names that come up and I often argue that if you’re hearing about it the likelihood is it probably won’t happen yeah I mean no one was hearing about Tyrese halberton for deonis sabonis and that’s that’s typically what ends up happening so but no the reality is there’s tons of names out there and there’s and they’re not hard to find you know like people can look at a situ like the New York Knicks um obviously they’ve gone all in what does it mean for someone like Mitchell Robinson what does it mean for someone like Julius Randall and within the walls of every especially within the Kings organization they’re gonna this is a this is a team that in a front office has shown the ability to want to attach themselves to anything that could be out there that could make their team better and they’re going to have those discussions and um there’s a kicking of the tires on so many on so many things so many situations but the ones that tend to get get the ones that are the hottest names are the ones that you’ve mentioned it’s because you see a lot of reports out there I don’t know that a lot of it does fans a lot of good because they really kind of go through the ringer but it makes good for Banner on talk radio like we’re doing right now I could right I I brought up the Nicks just not necessarily because I’m you know hearing a ton about the Knicks but you just look at situations and if you’re sitting back and trying to put your you know fantasy hat GM on and you’re going man you could kind of see how you know a healthy Mitchell Robinson a Julius Randall could fit with Sacramento you could see how certain things would work and I think you know the the the professional GM hat the ones this this front office makes I think they do something similar only with a lot more thought and resources that go into it with analytics and scouting and things of that nature so U but yeah there there’s a lot of names I don’t know that it truly benefits anybody and I wouldn’t want to get anybody’s hopes up Sean I uh I know you have a relationship with Alvin Gentry I don’t know to what extent I just know Alvin’s always talking with everybody before every game and he’s super friendly super welcoming is willing to talk with anybody but speaking of rumors there was a rumor this morning that Alvin might I didn’t I guess it’s not that Alvin might consider but that the Lakers might consider reaching out to Alvin Gentry to join JJ reic on his staff obviously Alvin has tons of experience in this league uh just wanted to know if you had heard anything on that front and maybe just a a thought on on Alvin’s role with this team just to let the viewers know really the the level of impact that Alvin has here yeah I mean I can tell you this much he really enjoys what he’s doing with this organization um he I I’ve joked with him over the years well should especially over this past year it’s like oh do you get that itch as someone who’s been as a coach in so many different levels like do you still get that itch do you want to go do it and and you know he’s always shooting it down I think I think the transition for him into the front office and at the point where he is in his life um he’s within this king’s front office now um that’s not to say that if the right situation came around and they threw him enough money and you know that coach all of a sudden gets that spark you know get you look at what if you’re Aven Gentry and you look at the Lakers and you go well I’ve got LeBron James I’ve got a brand new head coach that um you know that is coming in in a in a in a high-profile situation I have a familiarity with ad um you can certainly see why uh there could be a little bit of a nod to it but if I were a betting man I you know not I’m not saying I know anything in this regard just taking him at face value from my conversations that that I’ve had over the past year or so with him every time I’ve even mentioned a a quasi coaching situation he’s always kind of shot it down and he’s done it because he really Embraces this new role that he has and you know again where he at where he’s at in his life um kind of been through the ringer a little bit and uh you know seen the good and the bad that this league has to offer um I think he he has a there’s there’s kind of like a a calmness a piece to him and he he can be very impactful in this in this new situation he’s done it for a few years and they love him over there talking to Sean Cunningham of Fox 40 sports reporter Sean last one for you so you may or may have not heard that we’ve had a discussion on the show and basically if the kings run it back and don’t make a big move we can discuss what constitutes a big move but essentially if they run it back I have to eat or take a bite of a Carolina Reaper on or off air for you know HR purposes so if I were to ask you whether the chances of me having to eat that Carolina Reaper what percentage would you say that I will have to eat it versus won’t basically what are the chances that the Kings do what everyone would freak out if they do do this and run it back I want to see this actually I I really hope that they run it back at this point I hope no moves are made say that I want bro um I guess you yeah I I want to see how you qualify run it back too I I think in terms of the you know your core you could call it a core three a core four if you’re you know adding Malik Monk and Keegan Murray to that I mean I I truly don’t know because I feel that there’s so much offseason left there’s a there’s possibilities for this Kings team to get better and they’re going to be aggressive in doing so you know I don’t think the only ones I’m truly convinced that will not be moved or you know that they will at least try to put things around is fox sabonis and monk based on what his new agreement is with the team that’ll become official on July 6th but uh you know I’m never a guy that says anyone’s Untouchable I think we’ve had those discussions before I always say someone’s Untouchable until they’re not this team traded Tyrese halberton you know like you know with respect to Keegan Murray and I still think he’s going to have a tremendous career um you know we can probably get into whether I think he might be an All-Star or not or a Hall of Fame player I don’t think that does the player uh any good to talk like that but I think he’s going to be a hell of a player I can see him very long term with this team and I know that there’s a desire to keep him that way but I don’t look at him as Untouchable I don’t look at Fox of sabonis is a touchable either so um I just think based off where this team is they hitched their wagon to to Fox and sabonis and they in my opinion they need that second or third player meaning that however you group them whether Fox’s one domas two maybe one of those players turns out to be a three depending upon who you bring in like they need that three-headed monster and the support of Monk and whoever else is around the team you know if this team is truly going to make the strides that they wish and hope and want to to to do uh they have to add to that to that three-headed monster so to speak so whether if they can do it with Keegan or without Keegan I think they’re going to look at it Sean Cunningham Fox 40 sports reporter Sean thank you so much as always gotta have you on soon man there’s never enough time when we chat with you because there’s so much information but we’ll let you go for now and we’ll talk to you soon happy to do
