Indiana Pacers sign James Wiseman, what will make the signing a success? Pacers free agency day 3
not who anyone expected the Pacers find the third Center and it’s James wisman the former number two overall pick how good is he can he get better in the Pacers what will his role be and where does this leave the team with free agency still progressing all coming today on the lockon Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the lock on podcast Network your team everyday what up y’all happy Wednesday and welcome into another edition of the lockon Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and Si and today we have to talk all things James wisan a surprise is signing for the Pacers they needed a center and they went out and got one W reports it’s two-year deal for wisan and the Pacers I can confirm they’re signing him and man is that going to be the focus of today’s show the First new player with actual NBA experience the Pacers have signed this summer their only other additions are via the draft they have a new guy in the door the former number two overall pick and WIS we got to break down what he is good at and what he’s not good at why he’s signing for this at this stage of his career why the Pistons did not want him back uh what this could mean for him with the Pacers what role he’ll have where he can get better can he be another second draft success story and where this leaves the Pacers as they continue progressing into free agency and the News came in just before noon I believe I can’t remember from wge James wisman to the Pacers it’s a two-year deal no official terms I’ve been checking with people couldn’t get anything I will say this uh given the Pacers proximity to the tax and given that twoyear deals can be minimum deals um pretty certain it’s a minimum contract but I don’t know that I don’t know what the seconde structure looks like I don’t know any of that part we won’t get too much into that right now what we will get into is James wisman signing with the Pacers Jaylen Smith out the previous day they needed a third bck right I talked about this for a while on previous shows you know the history of this front office says that they want a third center right having three centers is enough depth enough depth excuse me at the spot and they lost one with Smith leaving they only had Turner and Jackson left then needed somebody and I thought they’d go the veteran route because they don’t have minutes to offer in their standard rotation right now with Turner as a starter and Jackson as the backup but I will say this James wisman um was on a team last year with lots of bigs and played 63 games there’s injuries at Center a lot and if he’s willing to accept g-league assignments for a team that has the best currently sharing an arena g- league setup in the NBA are among among the best I think that could work out very well for him to at least get chances right there’s a reason Isaiah Jackson was able to play so much last year because even before he you know started to play very well down the stretch of the season um J know Jaylen Smith gets hurt here and there Miles Turner gets hurt in there he played 59 games last year and 63 the season before despite not being the backup primarily in either of them for any sort of significant stretch so they need a third Center for that exact reason insert James wisman who is 23 years old just turned 23 uh at the end of March right so put that in on a Pacers team with a bunch of young guys and he will slot right in right he is certainly right on their timeline right now uh at that 2001 birthday the only players younger than him on the Pacers from last year are Ben Shepard Isaiah Jackson Maan Kendall Brown and jarus Walker right so young youth formerly considered a high potential player Al that has not pinned out in the NBA former Champion the season he did not play for Golden State uh and certainly slides in right away as the third big we can dive more into that uh as we keep moving here but the the the first question here is is what does this do for the Pacers because you know last year in Detroit you know wisman was there after five second rounders I believe is what the Pistons gave up for him the year before and they just didn’t give him a qualifying offer at all now his qualifying offer would have been fairly large and he probably would have just taken it had it been submitted to him uh and it’s worth remembering early in the SE season he was just out of the Pistons rotation right they had the first 18 games of the Season uh excuse me the first 20 games of the Pistons season he only played in 10 of them right and a couple times that was just garbage time minutes uh five of those it looks like were less than 10 minutes total and then he had another stretch from the middle of their season to about third 48th game where he wasn’t playing played in 30 of their first excuse me 31 of their first 50 games before playing much more down the stretch after you know Marvin Bagley got traded away they made other moves at the center spot so even on Detroit last year he was not in the rotation at first in the season but got there by the end and so that’s important context to kind of start as you look back at what his season just was because that was besides his Rook year the only season he spent with one team completely had that miniscus injury in year two with golden state then was traded so why wouldn’t the Pistons who are rebuilding want to keep someone like this a former number two overall pick um you know who certainly has some nice stats and some big games well they have a lot of other centers uh on their team already is is a starting point answer to that question right Jaylen Duren Isaiah Stewart um to to name too who who play quite often they had chimi metsu last year right they’re they’re gonna have plenty of big men and he would have been expensive so I certainly understand him not wanting to stay uh with Detroit there but the fact that the Pistons didn’t want to keep him should tell you something about what the level he played at last year and James wisman does not suck like he is really athletic and huge 7-footer 250 lbs who can move the way he does like that is an interesting player I have not like totally I tweeted it I I have receipts that I before the Pacers did this deal I was tweeting with somebody Mortin St Jensen who writes for Yahoo uh about I have I’m not totally out on the wisman experience yet right because if you have that much size and and Agility at that size there’s something there and yet he hasn’t put it all together in the past turnovers have been a big problem for him anything outside of the paint in terms of finishing plays has been a problem for him right defense has been a problem for him so certainly a long way to go as a player but certainly also something worth investing in I think when you have his kind of combination of size and speed like dominant Force at the lower levels because of those two traits now it’s about turning those into skills that actually matter in the NBA because you know last year with Detroit 16% turnover rate like that is way too high for a center right that’s really way too high for anybody uh but way too high for a center in fact his turnover rate last year would have been the highest on the Pacers besides James Johnson who never played Right Center turnover rates are like miles Turner’s turnover rate last year was 99.4% again wiseman’s was 15.9 Isaiah Jackson who is a little more aor prone in general his was 12.3 right guys who had the ball a lot halberton McConnell lard theirs are the guys who should be if they’re going to be over 12 and close to 15 that’s who it should be and they all were you know WIS been way too careless with the ball there I I’m not trying to just jump on him I’ll get to good stuff in a second you know that that is too high especially given what his usage was but he up his assist rate last year right his block percentage up over three that’s very good right that probably would have been first on the Pacers maybe second uh third excuse me uh so that’s pretty good right he has decent skills around the rim because of his size and Agility his rebound especially on defense is fantastic offensive rebounding is very good like in general the Pacers need rebounding perhaps you could be a guy to sneak in there and he had a career high in true shooting last year which matters a great deal if you’re gonna struggle at stuff you got to finish plays and he did 63.7% true shooting is excellent excellent that’s very good right that’s the highest of his career even on 16% usage you’ll take that right his usage has gone down every year of his career but if you can be that efficient you at least at least it’s obvious what your role can be in an offense you’re going to finish plays and if you remember during the playoffs I talked about this part of the progression something I noticed about a lot of non Celtics teams to be clear because the Celtics don’t have a ton of athleticism at the at the center spot but they’re so talented it doesn’t matter a lot of teams that had success in the playoffs with you know bending defenses in the lane had lob threats right Aaron Gordon every MTH Center basically Isaiah Jackson even at times for the Pacers um you know you could go through lots of teams precious atua was occasionally doing that for the Knicks although they were getting their lobs more from wings um but lob threats were a very interesting part of the playoffs to me and wisan can certainly be that he’s a very good finisher uh in that way but that is where his shooting really comes from you know last year if you look at where his shots on the floor actually were attempted uh H top of my head 80 88% of his shots were within 10 feet last year uh and very few looks like 4.7 percent were either 16 feet or farther and very even fewer of those were threes right so um not a shooter at all does not have a ton of range 81 dunks is crazy right so he’s around the basket all the time but he’s got he’s very much an around the basket kind of player that’s not a bad thing that’s just what his current range is so some stuff to like right if you if you are this large and mobile that that that is something to build on that is perhaps an Above the Rim type Rim type of player that fits very well with Indiana’s guards right this is in Theory the best offensive system for James wisen I think that is somewhere to start with optimism for the Pacers is that with Alberton with them hard with McConnell with whoever he is going to have chances in the lane to SC set a screen roll to the basket and do something finishing a play he has to get better at lots of other stuff for the Pacers including his handle and hands in general not turning it over so much um and maybe a more reliable jumper to he’s not just limited to those things although Isaiah Jackson fit in well with the Pacers doing just those things but the other thing is defense Isaiah Jackson’s defense is much better than wisman he has not been a particularly good Defender despite his size and kind of speed uh for his whole career his pick and roll defense has not been good so that is somewhere he will really have to grow and it seems like he has the traits to be good on that end but it hasn’t happened yet and so you know I don’t I I expect he’ll be the third center for the Pacers but they need him to make progress in those areas to keep up with the fact that he is an efficient play finisher that he is a great screen dive big man that at times if catches it at the at the elbow at the free throw line he can make a one dribble move and get by somebody right there’s a lot to like about his offensive game certainly once he has the ball secured and can make a play but still some room to grow that said we’ve seen this movie with the Pacers before and I think they can develop him into more than what he is right now how much more that will Define the James wisman Pacers era however long it may be let’s talk about that what the growth could be how it could go for the Pacers before we get in to any of that though we need to talk about game time and automated ticket authorized excuse me ticket Marketplace of Major League Baseball which makes getting single day for your second listen lots of moves still happening around the league the Warriors have rolled with Kyle Anderson and at former Pacer buddy heeld it sounds like could be moving there as of very right before I started recording this uh check out lockdown Warriors I’m very curious about what their team will look like can they play five tiny guards at the same time I don’t know but they’ve added some talent and I’m interested in what the Warriors post Klay Thompson could actually look like here in Pacer land funny enough a former Warrior and a former Warrior Champion James wisman is coming to the Circle City wisman uh his rookie year with golden state after they picked him number two put up some big numbers 11.1 points 5.8 rebounds per game um but certainly did not grow the way they needed him to was not a good enough Defender and then Torres miniscus and only played 39 games the first two seasons of his career has only played 147 despite being drafted in the same draft class as Halton and all those guys Pacers love that 2020 draft but if you look at the games of players in that draft 147 for wisman ranks 35th so injuries have been an issue for him and certainly a factor uh potentially in his you know current situ where he I don’t know that it’s the minimum contract he signed with the Pacers but I would strongly guess that uh where the point that after his rookie deal he’s taking a minimum contract but I bring up the draft to also say this welcome James wisman to the Pacers because they own the 2020 draft they’ve now had wisman of course Obi toppen Jaylen Smith Tyrese halber Aaron n Smith Jordan war and cash Stanley on the roster at times from that draft I believe that’s eight players from this draft that have now hit the Pacers roster at one point or another out of the Oh Aaron n Smith too I mean they’re they just they’re everywhere I think I already said n Smith but either way they are all about the 2020 draft and it’s been the the this the year of the draft specifically doesn’t matter but situationally there’s been a lot of overlap from what this draft is uh and what the Pacers kind of organizing philosophy of getting to where they are right now as a team has been they plucked these young guys from their old team and gave them a role that they thought made more sense for that player and developed key skills to make them fit with the Pacers at the same time and made these players better right Jaylen Smith was was not playing very much in Phoenix and that he caned the Pacers was playing a lot more developed a three ball became more valuable on both ends Obi toppen was playing with New York but was primarily just a floor spacer didn’t have many chances to touch it beyond the three-point line all of a sudden he could shoot over 40% from Deep was good in transition but did not require transition he was good with the bench as well halberton went from great to amazing uh thanks to many improvements aarin neith’s three-point shot improved with the Pacers and so did his defense and the game’s kind of slowing down for him in general Jordan war was pretty similar to the player when he got here and left but I think he got a little more ained as an attack the basket kind of guy right certainly his best stretch of his career came with the Pacers averaging 13 points per game on very efficient shooting but that was also his best rebounding stretch and passing stretch over two assists per game of his entire career right you you get the gist of what I’m saying these these guys have come from other teams where they’re not playing because of their rot the team’s rotation or goals uh or they’re not being used in a way that makes the most sense for them and the P have taken them in found the right role for them and and developed their skills all at the same time now to be clear most of these guys were in situations where they weren’t playing very much not because of talent issues necessarily but because of team structure issues right the Knicks were in the playoffs for Obie specifically like they were good right they just had Julius ran in front of them right halberton was with Daron Fox Smith was behind Aon and I forget who the backup center was Dar sarich I believe in Phoenix right Aaron D Smith behind a thousand talented dudes in Boston namely tat m brown wara also behind a thousand talented dudes in Milwaukee you know for wisan that’s not as much the case right he that that was not the reason he wasn’t playing as much in other places but I still think and wonder can the Pacers have a similar success story here where they get him in the door they say here’s how we play here’s how you will succeed fitting in it look what happened to Jaylen Smith right his third-year team option got declined right he was he was in trouble career-wise earnings wise came here and now he got 30 million coming out of here and 15 million in Indiana right that’s your sales pitch to wisman if you’re the PTI front office and they already agreed with him but you know if you’re Wis you have to see that and go okay if I do what they say and on offense and try to buy into this system where I think he actually his skills fit very well again as has been commentated on by lots of people on the signing Nate Duncan who you know watched a ton of Warriors during their title run was the first person I saw so his is on the brain and I’ll read his tweet but I agree with this and I was dming somebody about it he said I love the fit for James wisman in Indiana they’ll have to compete for minutes but their point guard should be able to get the best of whatever potentially has could not agree more right great fit for him but now it’s about the Pacers to one prove to him that he does these things and things will go well for him like early success I think is going to matter a lot how he plays in his first couple appearances for the Pacers will be a big deal but two it’s about adding skills and I don’t expect this to be like the rest of their guys who who were reluctant or not great Shooters and then became better Shooters in Indiana he like is a non-shooter 38 of his 63s were in his rookie season with the Warriors that’s 63s in three seasons it’s going to take a lot to turn him into more like an actual someone with you know space away from the basket but can they get him to pass better can they make his screening even better so that his lobs are better can they make it so he’s a better decision maker with the ball so his turnover rate comes down or most importantly for them can they make him guard right he’s got the tools to look like a good Defender that does not mean uh in any stretch of the imagination in the NBA that he’s going to be a good defender or has been a good Defender got the tools to be a good Defender can they get him in the right spots can they harness something there those are the kind of things that will make the James wisman signing successful can they repeat their success of Player Development getting these guys and specifically it’s been from one draft class but getting these guys uh especially that covid year where it was just a tough year for the draft and playing as a rookie they get them to buy in play a role that makes sense for them and add to their game and for wisman there’s a lot of ways that that could work to make him a lot better right if he is who he was last year year right 63 64% true shooting on 16% usage and his turnover rate goes to Miles Turner levels like that’s a competent offensive player alone you don’t have to add anything else you don’t have to add shooting you don’t have to add passing that’s it just stop right there if he is the same player he was last year but can guard much better um you know in a meaningful way that’s also significant right I don’t know how what that would look like he could probably only guard fives at this stage of his career but you know that would be significant any sort of like floater something like that you know there’s just a lot of ways that he could improve slightly that would help him and help the Pacers so I I’m not giving up on a 23y old in this way last year um the Pistons defense was three and a half points worse 3.6 points worse with wisan on the court then off and their offense was four points worse with him off so about an eight point worse wisan on off with the Pistons that means and shows that he has a lot to work on but the Pacers work on those things with other players who have struggled at pass stops has gone well for them and almost every time they’ve done very well with these Reclamation projects and this could be another one with wisan so there’s a lot to like there’s a lot not to like but the Pacers have proven that they deserve a chance to to develop players like this even though wisman likely going to be the third Center let’s talk about his role and the Pacers situation heading into the continuation of free agency to close out today’s locked on Pacers we are back once again here on lockdown Pacers thanks making us your first listen today and every single day no super Dynamic huge moves on day three of free agency I suspect the next huge thing that’ll happen I mean given the talent uh available in general I suppose this seems obvious but we’ll be a trade maybe Brandon Ingram maybe L Markin I don’t know it just seems like that’s kind of where the market is heading and all the big deals most of the big deals have been settled so check out any team that did something interesting to you if I can make a suggest and locked on Magic they’re going to be they’ve been all over the the the board keeping their own guys Landing kcp that’s going to be a nasty defensive team and Philip Rossman right can tell you all about it we’re up to 50 deals signed in free agency and we’ll get more to the external Market but the starter level guys are basically gone LeBron’s out there D rozen’s out there Caleb Martin out there it’s it’s running low uh let’s talk one more thing I want to talk about with wisman his role I saw some hints of like this should this be the backup no no no he should not play over Isaiah Jackson especially to start the season I get the potential there uh but Isaiah Jackson is also young and has proven to have skills to get him on the floor in the NBA including in the postseason which is the most important thing that matters for the Pacers now is how their players can play and can do in the playoffs so Isaiah Jackson should absolutely start no trades at all if this is the team they start uh next season with Isaiah Jackson should should 10,000% be the back of five Isaiah Jackson is younger than James WIS right and better um that that is the end point of that discussion but again I think wisman as a third big which is a fine role for him on a team that he has seen developed talent and can buy in easily to that part of it you know I think that is a natural role for him and there’s going to be injuries Miles Turner played the like the most games he’s played in Forever last year and he still missed a few I’m not I’m not I’m not saying that at all he played 79 77 I can’t remember Jackson only played 59 he wasn’t hurt that much but he did miss a few games due to injury and centers get hurt a lot they’re big laboring players like every Center on every team gets hurt uh to some extent and Turner to officially get his number uh last year he played uh good Lord 77 games but before that he had not played more than 70 since 201819 so there will be chances for wisan to play Maybe Obby to and just becomes the third Center and wisman his role is you know when there’s needed or when there’s chances who knows but I think that’s I think there will be chances for him to play how much I don’t know and how he much he takes advantage of those is going to matter a great deal to his long-term Outlook but I I saw some discussion of like oh could he be the backup center no no no Isaiah Jackson should certainly even with wisman in the fold be the backup center to open next season for the Pacers their first external free agent signed James wisman and now we look forward what does this mean for the rest of their free agency well might be done they might be close to done or completely done as the Pacers especially with signing guys who were not on their team last year uh including their entering free agency 11 rostered guys uh plus Johnny Fury James wisman Obi toppen Pascal seak excuse me 10 guys for those guys that’s 14 for the Pacers and I have them that does not mean this is how it is but with a a with my estimated contract for uh Johnny Fury I have him a little over two million away from the luxury tax you can fit a minimum salary into that amount but there’s also lots of bonuses for Miles Turner has a couple incentives in his contract T.J McConnell has some incentives in his contract that could take you over the tax and you don’t I mean some CA in some cases with these incentives especially ones the Pacers have they’re so lofty that if they happen you’re just happy to pay the tax that mean you’re season went really well but you’d still like to avoid it if you can so right now it’s really tough for the Pacers to add anybody they could add a rookie minimum and still have wiggle room under the tax and not be afraid of their bonuses and they have two rookies who they just drafted who certainly could maybe get a roster spot now if they want to add a 15th guy uh in Enrique Freeman and Tristan Newton but that is kind of might be up to Summer League how do these guys play we got the summer league roster earlier this week we’ll talk about that soon the other way they could save some money is a Kendall Brown waiver followed by a signing of a oneyear of service player or a zero years of service player and then bringing in the minimum player that would save them couple hundred thousand dollars and allow them to still be perhaps a million from the tax Kendall Brown on their summer league team so that does not seem like an imminent thing that would happen but if if you are a person who thinks James Johnson and I I believe he does but if you are a James Johnson should be back next year person that would be the route for that is Kendall Brown waved James Johnson signed and then the final roster spot goes to uh Enrique Freeman Tristan Newton some undrafted guy but likely one of those two that would be a way they could have 15 guys on their team and likely still duck the attacks I know that people think I’m I’m ho on the tax too much I apologize I just think that it’s a relevant factor to how the Pacers build their team and there just the decisions they will make in for agency and part of those decisions is they can fit James wisman into a I’m guessing but presumably and I saw Hoops rumors agreed with my presuming uh two-year minimum deal for wisman uh would allow them to still be safe under that tax as they make decisions uh in the future so what can they do now well they have a roster spot in theory but their proximity to the tax means if they’re going to make a signing they’re probably going to have to have that player be very inexperienced player uh or they’re going to have to you know do some creativity with Kendall Brown and his deal I don’t know they want to rush to do that right they have his deal and it doesn’t change until opening night maybe he could even be in training camp so maybe he’ll see something if you see any player signed for the Pacers in the next couple days or the next couple weeks I would guess it’s James Johnson just given the way their team has shaking out but I think we’ll have to see where this develops or if they make a trade it’s only July 3 trades happen much later than this every single year you never know where this is headed they they signed player like jakar Samson got signed like in early August a few years ago you just never know where these things are going to develop or who is going to pop up as available on the market so you never know but uh it seems like they’re getting close to the end especially of signing players who might play at all next year they have uh third string depth at basically every position now on the team and they have some youth at it and they kept their vets and they look ready to go for another season so a lot less money projecting in the future we’ll see uh coming up on lockdown Pacers in Future Days uh I already recorded an interview with Derek Schulz we talked about wisman Obi toppen and really we went for a long time on the resigning of Pascal seaka what that does for the Pacers window if they don’t make a move tomorrow you’ll probably get that on Fourth of July and then Friday you’ll get a what are the next kind of steps of Pacers for agency deal and then next week we’ll start talking some summer league any signings they made what moves they could still do all that kind of stuff maybe a mailbag uh and then after that it’ll be a lot of Summer League Focus talking about the young guys then we’ll pivot to the rest of the offseason what that shapes up to be before getting into August so that’s the direction this is going because the Pacers team looking very close to done and put together given the signings they made James wisman in the fold salary situation all coming into the Zone makes a lot of sense so uh their free agency’s looking pretty straight forward the rest of the way barring a trade but you know we’ll cover it all here on the lockdown Pacers podcast hope you guys enjoyed Today’s Show let me know what you think of the Wiseman signing either down in the comments or on Twitter at Tony R East I’ll be very curious to see what the fan consensus is on this and I certainly will finally an NBA player so if you know in the past we’ve done episodes about what new players can bring to the Pacers James wisman will get a full episode of that at some point we’ll talk with kah Hill have locked on Pistons about wisman for a segment certainly so lots of good stuff coming here on the lock down Pacers podcast thank you guys for listening today hope you had a wonderful day have a good holiday if you don’t listen on Fourth of July see you on Friday tell then everybody take care have a wonderful day

Wiseman is awful. I expected a meh vet center and Kev somehow delivered something much worse.
I don't believe in Wiseman, but it's not like this is a big investment as long as the Pacers have some wiggle room to replace him with a vet on a pro-rated minimum if the need presents itself.
Yeah, let Mo Bamba go to the Clippers instead of offering him a contract. 🙄 I swear their moves..
Wiseman is a good defender and a good rebounder…It was a GOOD move…The Pacers are BETTER!!!
Someone let 🐎 🌬 know the Pacers "prowl" is over. 💀
