I want to talk about what the Mavs need what do they need with that spot so I’ll go through a couple of four four key areas that I think the Mavericks need to to add but let’s start here the Dallas Mavericks roster is pretty evenly Bal balanced right now this team just went to the NBA finals so you know they’re very capable as a whole unit and if anything you improved marginally at the very least you improved marginally because you know you’re going from Tim Hardway Jr to Klay Thompson that should be an improvement in a couple areas experience consistency defense just ability and awareness that should be an upgrade for sure I think across the board I think Maps fans can agree on one thing that going from Klay to from Tim Hardy junr to Klay Thompson should be an upgrade so at the very least improved there not even considering the fact that Lively should be better PJ Washington Daniel Gafford into the MAV system now for a whole off season Luca and Kyrie have a successful season under their belt together they could be better together you got exom going into another year with the Mavericks where his NBA future was kind of questionable before last season he was coming back from Europe and all that omx could take a step forward and he could be part of the rotation you got Hardy who got some finals minutes maybe that gives him some confidence and then he comes into the NBA season ready to go and then you look at the other Acquisitions the Mavericks made you go from Derrick Jones Jr to nii Marshall and I know we all love Derrick Jones Jr he was great one of my favorite role players of all time to follow to cover from the day we talked to him at media day when he was confident as all get out to now where he’s going to go play for the Clippers and signed that deal and doubled his money that he’s made in the NBA and congrats to him and all that but Derrick Jones Jr when he joined the Mavericks at the beginning of last season was playing 14 minutes a game for the Bulls nshi Marshall was playing 19 minutes a game on the Pelicans who are at least a playoff team so naag Marshall could he be better than Derrick Jones Jr absolutely he’s definitely going to be better at things than Derrick Jones Jr and so you at least have that that could be an upgrade but it could be a wash and that could be fine and then you have Quinton Grimes and Josh Green who which could also be a wash and that could be fine but I think Quinton Grimes will be an upgrade over Josh Green I think he’ll be a confident three-point shooter takes more threes than what Josh has I think he’ll be a better point of attack Defender I’ve been saying that all along I’m going to stick with it until I’m wrong but the maps have made some marginal improvements across the board and now you look at this roster that just went to the finals and what the big things that they need was shooting you bring in Klay Thompson Quinton Grimes is a positive shooter na Marshall was a positive shooter last year but a little questionable and so they at least addressed some of the things that that plagued them last year and so now you start looking through all right this Mavs team this you know ncoo Harrison’s done a great job of adding to this Mavs team what else do they need and you’re talking about something on the edges this is not a big fundamental change in move that the Mavericks are going to make this final roster spot is not necessarily the 15th man but it’s the 15th spot and you’re talking about all right what is some what is the marginal thing that this Mavericks team needs I start looking at who can play what positions now positions in the NBA don’t really matter as much as they used to but I’m just going to go through some like General positions the Mavericks have the Mavericks have a lead guard their offense is predicated on Luca and Kyrie being the scheme Jason kid said it many times throughout the season we pared that many times on this show throughout the season in the playoffs there’re the schemes you need a lead guard you need somebody with the ball in their hands it’s the same for most NBA offenses but Luca Kyrie and then kind of exm can play that role too every once in a while in the regular season so you’ve got three of we’ve got two two and a half of those basically the lead guards then you have your wing guards these are the ones that you can run off of screens that you want guarding the other perimeter you know guards and things like that I think Klay Thompson Quinton Grimes exom and Hardy can play those roles so you got four guys that can play that Wing guard role then you’ve got that Wing forward rle this is like you got to be able to swing between guarding guard sometimes guarding four sometimes maybe guarding centers every once in a while when you rotate got to be able to shoot the three got to be able to uh do a little bit of something with the ball that’s your that’s PJ Washington Klay Thompson can do this because he’s 67 Quinton Grimes I think can do this Naji Marshall absolutely can do this this is where Maxi plays at four and then omx should slot into this spot if he’s going to play next year and then you got your centers your Lively Gafford Maxi and Dwight so you got those four kind of main positions the Mavericks have a lot of it’s interchangeable sure but you have you have a good amount of guys at your wing guard got about four of those Wing forward you’ve got about five of those depends on what you count Maxi and omx as Center you got four of those or three and a half if you count Maxi as half a wing and half a center so okay you’re looking all right now the maps do need a lead guard let’s just let’s stick with that all right that’s that’s one need just looking at positions now let’s look at skills what do what skill things do the Mavericks need we know that they need a lead guard but what kind of skills they need shooting one of the big questions in the NBA Finals was can the Mavericks find one more shooter can they get somebody else I think Dallas has four very confident Shooters going into next year like you’re confident they’re confident everything the coaches are confident Clay Thompson yeah Kyrie Irving Luca I’ll throw Jaden Hardy in there and then I’ll maybe throw in Grimes in there too because Grimes he shot 34% last year but he shot 38% his first two years on five threes a game so I think I might throw him into a confident shooter the rest of them there’s questions either they were good at times and terrible at times last year or uh we want to see them do it again next year so the questionable Shooters to me are PJ Washington Dante exom Maxi Naji Marshall who shot really good last year but not good the three years before that omx who’s shot changed a lot last year I’m very excited to see what his shot could look like in the NBA and then Lively hit a three in the NBA Finals his first one of his career does he start to add shooting but that’s questionable so you’ve got four you got four maybe five qu like The Confident Shooters and you’ve got six questionable ones so okay maybe some shooting because that’s kind of an interesting list ball handlers the Mavericks have three ball handlers you can trust Luca Kyrie and exom and even in the finals exom was not one of those guys can clay be one maybe a little here and there can Hardy be one maybe a little here and there Naji Marshall is kind of kind of quietly a ball handler he can do some stuff with the ball I’ve seen some passes I’ve seen some things talked to Jake Madison blocked on pelicans and he was like oh yeah he can do some stuff with the ball K Grimes do some of that I’ve seen some of that with him too can PJ Washington add a little bit more in this offense now that he’s been through playoffs and all that with the Mavericks but I think you really only have three trusted ball handlers on this team so starting to see what the Mavs need to add here two more skills shot creation this is different than shooting different than ball handling guy that can create his own shot this is another thing the Mavericks did not have in the NBA Finals just one more guy that could create a shot I think you’ve got two shot creators Luca Kyrie then you have a couple of questionable ones clay exm Hardy maybe PJ Washington create a shot for themsel or somebody else Klay exm Hardy PJ a lot of questions there and then the last one is defense can the m do can the Mavericks add another Defender well there’s three different types of Defenders for the Mavericks there’s point of attack there’s guarding the guards the guarding the player with the ball in his hands guarding Wings the ones around the edges and guarding bigs the point of attack Defenders are Quint Grimes Klay Thompson Dante exom then throw in naagi PJ Washington I would throw those guys in there as like you feel confident about those guys defending your wing Defenders PJ Washington Naji Marshall Klay Thompson Quinn Grimes and omx I throw him in there and your big Defenders are Lively Gafford and Maxi you feel confident about all those guys defending in those areas so you’re actually doing pretty well at Defenders you just got to see what they look like and so there you go if you’re going through the needs with the Mavericks need their roster is pretty evenly balanced you need a lead guard that can possibly shoot that can possibly create a shot and can definitely handle the ball that’s what the Mavericks need just going through their needs all right we don’t have enough of this Luca Kyrie go down all of a sudden you got three guys two guys they can handle the ball woof woof that’s what they need coming up let’s get into what kind of players are available right now are there ball about this guy we’ve known we known that the Mavericks need another ball handler they need another guy that can create a shot possibly another shooter somebody that can can help in a pinch right you’re not asking this guy to change your world but you are asking all right every once in a while we’ll need you to step up in a big moment there’s only really one guy left I’m going to go through through a bunch of names I’ll say a bunch of guys there’s really only one guy left that fits this bill and it may not be the guy that you want you may not be excited about this name this may not be a name that I say and you go oh yeah let’s get that guy Spencer Den witty last one left Spencer come home to Mama come home to Mama Spencer if you remember when he was trying to decide when he was a buyout candidate if he was going to go with the Mavericks or he was going to go to the Lakers he said well you know you know sometimes you go home to your mama and she makes you feel better and all that and your dad challenges you and makes you you know want to be better and all that sometimes you just want the extra Challenge and he went he took that challenge and guess what he failed miserably and so did the Lakers and they’re failing Mis right now their their fans are very upset about the Lakers doing nothing in free agency right now all they’re doing is listening to bronny James say that he’s never thought about playing with his dad listen your dad lied your dad listen brownie your dad has lied professionally for a long time about reading books about uh remembering things about calling stuff all all kinds of things you cannot lie about not having thought about playing all of us have thought about you playing with your dad how could you not have thought about that okay rant over Spencer DW is the guy he fits this mold he fits he fits the the mold of the Mavericks need they need a ball handler he can do that they need a shot Creator yeah he can do that they need a shooter well about the only thing he did with the Lakers well was shot 39% on on three threes a game and you know in Dallas he shoots well he shot 40% on threes for the Mavericks at the end of the 2022 season he shot 40% on threes at the end of at the beginning of the 2023 season before he was traded so you know that he can shoot with the Mavericks there’s something about it he just comes to Dallas and he ends up shooting really well he’s the guy that fits he’s also bigger he’s a bigger guard what 66 he fits with the Mavericks need it’s Spencer dwy if I’m going to pick somebody if the Mavericks have you know a veteran minimum type contract and let’s say that Spencer dwy goes for that I don’t even know that he would go for that but he was just a buyout guy but if he does go for that I I Spencer dwy is the guy the Mavs really only have a vet minimum contract left he’s played 10 years so that’s that’s the highest vet men and you can go I feel like he’ll get he could get money from somebody else he also did not end the season very well with the Lakers so he was just he was basically not playing by the end of it played 14 minutes a game five minutes or played five games 14 minutes a game in the when the Lakers series there in the playoffs shot 35% maybe he played himself down into playing into a minimum contract and if he did MAV should go get him come home to Mama Spencer JY cuz you’re the player that the Mavericks need ball handlers Mavericks only have three trusted ball handlers luuka Kyrie exom then you throw like clay Hardy Naji Marshall Grimes PJ Washington and some of you I can hear or like Naji Grimes PJ you’re putting them as ball handlers I know that’s how dire it is they need one more and he’s the best one on the list so if you need to add one more offensive player that can do those things in a pinch would Spencer dwy demand more minutes yeah that’s that’s one of the problems so if if Spencer Den is not wanting to go for a vet minimum and not play a lot and all this kind of stuff then all right you’ve got to look somewhere else but he would fit if you can convince him if Jason kid can work his magic and say all right we’ve got this role for you some nights you’ll have big minutes because if luuka and Kyrie are out you’re gonna play a lot he’d play 30 minutes in games when luuka or Kyrie are out he would because you can play him and XM together play him and Clay together you can play you can play him and Hardy together you can do that so and luuka and Kyrie Miss games Luka is not looking good playing with Slovenia right now he did have a triple double which is like par for the course for Luca he looks terrible had a triple double but Luca played 70 games last year in the regular season played 22 games in the playoffs he’s playing right now in the European qualifiers he’s going to miss games next year they’re goingon to they’re going to slow bring him back I think and so you need that one more guy to create the create with the ball in his hands and all that I think Spencer dwy can be that guy if he’s willing to take that role if he’s willing to take a lot less money than he’s used to being paid he wants to come home to Mama I think Spencer jwood is the guy here’s some other ones though that could possibly be there uh Dennis Smith Jr yes I’m I’m for Dennis Smith Jr lots of people have asked me about Dennis Smith Jr and have asked me should they bring him back should they do this he’s interested in coming back uh I think Tim McMahon reported on the hoop Collective podcast today that that name was floated by Luca that they were like hey what about your what about Dennis Smith Jr and he was like yeah he like didn’t he didn’t turn it down Dennis MC Jr can handle the ball he’s not going to shoot the ball well for you he’s not really going to create a shot he you we know he can get to the rim well last year he played like 19 minutes a game for the Nets six points three and a half rebounds shot under 30% from three he’s just not going to be a three-point threat but you play him next to Clay you play him next to Hardy and maybe that maybe that can work out for you he definitely can defend he definitely can defend his butt off and so if you want to add one more point of a attack Defender it’s that Dennis Smith Jr back that’s wild that he became such a really great defender that he’s just known for that now because he was not that he had some moments remember he had a a game-winning block on Tobias Harris he had some good defensive moments with with Dallas but I don’t remember him being like a lock down Defender but I think Dennis Smith Jr could be one too he doesn’t give you exactly the things that you need he gives you some things can give him the can put the ball in his hands he can create a littleit bit he can definitely defend so you’re adding another Defender there and you could use one more point of attack Defender too cuz what if clay doesn’t turn out to be as solid as we hope then all of a sudden you’re like all right it’s Grimes exom Naji Marshall o could use just one more guy to defend somebody’s going off Devon Booker’s going off got to throw somebody on him I’m down for Dennis Smith Jr I think I think that would be good he would definitely take I think he would take the money the Mavericks are able to offer him and I think that could work out another one that’s like not not great Kyle Lowry would add a veteran he’s 38 he’s older but he did play 28 minutes a game last year for the for the Heat and for the the Sixers so you know he can play at least minutes he averag eight points and four and a half assists for them he’s not going to give you exactly what exactly what you want as far as like uh you know every he can’t he’s not gonna be playing like that every night maybe he wants to still but Kyle Lowry’s one that I actually be down for I think he would he would be good as like another veteran guys won a championship are him and Clay cool because of the the 2019 finals I don’t know about that but I think this is I think he’s somebody that could come in and could could help and could play a role be another veteran in the locker room guy that can play Big He he’ll play Big minutes if Luca and Kyrie are out but if he doesn’t maybe some nights he doesn’t play would he be cool with that at this point 38 years old would he be cool with the vet minimum contract cont ract I don’t know we’ll see what happens maybe he’ll want to go back to Philly that you know maybe he thinks they’re more positioned to win a title than than he is so Kyle Lowry is another one I I think could work could work in that situation I think that’s it for ball handlers there’s not a lot right now there’s a two more names Malachi Flynn he got dropped by the Pistons he scored 50 points last year you want one guy that doesn’t have to play some nights but then every once in a while you’re like oh man we just we got nothing just throw Malachi F in there Jordan mcglaughlin a guy that got dropped by the uh the timber wolves shot really well from three in his career and I think he could be another ball handler where you’re like okay yeah sure bring that guy in and some nights he doesn’t play and some nights he he goes off I think that’s somebody that you can bring in too so but if you’re going to get somebody that fits what the Mavericks need Spencer deny Kyle Lowry or Dennis Smith Jr those are the three names that I’m looking at right now that I think could fill what the Mavericks need coming up let’s go through the rest of them what about this guy what about this guy what about this guy I got a ton more names talk about those coming up you don’t believe you shouldn’t be here shut it down let’s go today’s episode is uh is brought to you by free Kyle Lowry Dennis Smith Jr I think those guys really fit uh Shake Milton is still out there can handle the ball a little bit I don’t know how much you want him to um other shot creators Alec Burks think he’s still out there right Alec Burks is out there he’s a guy that can can definitely create his own shot you’re not asking him to create for others he can handle the ball a little bit but um you’re really asking to just go out there and create a shot so you’re like all right luuka and Kyrie are out we just need somebody that can maybe get us 15 points right I think Alec Burks could be a guy that could come out and do that uh Gordon Hayward probably washed but if you want one more guy that can create a little bit and you’re like all right maybe some nights you won’t play but some nights we’re going to need you to go out there and can you give us 15 points can you give us 12 points can you hit three threes can you hit a couple of mid-range shots here or there Gordon Hayward kind of an interesting name Marcus Morris he’s a shot Creator they wouldn’t be able to sign both Marie and Marcus so they wouldn’t be able to sign both that would be weird to like drop the guy that was a key veteran Marie Morris a key veteran for the Mavericks and a great voice in the locker room and then to go with his brother just bring in his brother is that terrible is that terrible I feel like especially since Marie moris like kind of lobbied for him to join the Mavericks and then it didn’t happen and now we’re like all right well we’re gonna move on from you Marie but we we’ll bring in margus can kind of create his own shot here or there it’s another name that I’m kind of looking at um there’s not a lot of shot creation left let me tell you those are those are the kind of the names I came up with Shooters there is some Shooters though Evan fornier don’t Google him but Devan fornier is definitely a guy that can shoot I don’t know if he what contract he would take but you imagine having a Tim Hardaway type on a minimum where you can throw him in every once in a while maybe he gets hot from three maybe he knocks down some shots maybe Klay misses some games because klay’s Clay’s 35 going to be 35 in February to like I think that that he could come in and and spot fill in for him Doug McDermot another guy just come in and light it up he shot 50% from three when he played for the Mavericks couple a little while ago our old friend Reggie Bullock he fits two categories here a Defender and a shooter he’s out there if you need one more guy that can hit a shot he he didn’t do a lot for the Rockets but he did shoot 40% from three last year he’s a guy can come in and if you do kind of look at those wings you’re like all right at at guard you got Luca exom Kyrie Hardy and then at your wing spot you got Klay Naji Marshall and then like Lawson’s like your third string guy I think this Kyrie Grimes Hardy exm Luca all kind of the guards and then your wings you’re like all right we got clay Nai and then is it Lawson right like maybe you need one more Wing maybe you need one more Wing in that in that area maybe it’s omx that that slides into that spot he’s he’s the back he’s the third string three and the four but reg Bullock could come in and be that guy and then all of a sudden you’re like oh we got a credible guy in case one of these guys go down then all we got a credible guy to come in and fill a spot I know these names are not like blowing you away but this is what they got another name is very interesting because the Mavericks or Mavericks this you know Lucas team in Slovenia literally just played him but Dario sarich he’s 30 years old he’s playing for Croatia right now had a pretty good game looks pretty good out there and last year he for the Warriors he shot 38% from three couple of assists played about 17 minutes a game I don’t know that the Mavericks have enough playing time for what he may want but if you if omx is going to slide into that three spot and you’re not really feeling great about Maxi and Maxi misses a bunch of games anyway and if Maxi misses a bunch of games then all of a sudden you’re four are like PJ and omx and that’s kind of it and what if omx doesn’t pan out yet what if he needs one more year then you’re like okay it’s PJ and playing Naji Marshall at the four like what are we doing at that point now your four spot is kind of is kind of weak at that point remember when the Mavericks were playing Derrick Jones Jr at the four a lot last year and you’re like oh my gosh we could just use one more four I don’t think I think Dario Sarge may want a bigger role than that and definitely more money but he’s he’s a name out there if everything dries up those are your Shooters couple other Defenders out there uh Patrick Beverly I’m not interested I don’t I I don’t I don’t get the I don’t I don’t get it I don’t know what he brings to the table anymore he brings a podcast Mike me and him bring the same thing podcast mik we bring that to the table Patrick B and I have two things in common three things in common we’re podcasters we’re both like 6 foot three and we’re not really doing a lot on a basketball court right now I’m kind of out on the Patrick Bley experience Robert comington is out there if you know one another Wing Defender that can definitely play a four so the same thing I said about like aario G you’re like all right we maybe we need one more four Robert Covington’s out there he could do that bisac bomo he his name was on the list and so I wrote it down that’s as far as I went with bismack bbo there are other guys boban is still out there if you want a Vibes guy if we need if we need some more Vibes I would love to be able to use that drop again every once in a while Jay Crowder still out there our old friend Wes Matthews is still out there there’s guys that are way too expensive I I saved these because there these are the names that you want these are the names that you want to hear I know you I know you these are the names you want to hear but I I just don’t think I don’t think there’s a path demaro Rosen he’s still out there he wants more than the mid-level exception MAV only had that to offer free agent anyway but he’s out there still there’s no way tus Jones would be awesome that’s that’s your exm replacement and then what we wanted Hardy what the Mavs wanted Hardy to be tus Jones could be that great backup one of the best backup point guards in the the league tyus Jones would be awesome he’s 28 small guard not sure what happen around playoff time but he was in the running for Sixth Man of the Year a little bit there and uh yeah did a did a great job for the Grizzlies I just don’t think there’s a path I I don’t think that he would take the money the M can offer Marquel folt same kind of thing he’s kind of found his role with the with the magic and I think he would be a good like big guard Off the Bench fill in and he could score when Luca Kyrie are out that’d be awesome I don’t think they got the money Gary Trent Jr same thing I think he’s going to want more money and imagine having Tim Hardway Jr again a Tim Hardway Jr at the minimum that’d be awesome but I don’t think they can get him Caleb Martin same kind of thing I think he’s still out there and I just don’t think the Mavs have enough money to get any of these guys and I know these those are the names that you kind of want if I didn’t mention the guy that you’re thinking about comment below what about this guy and then comment the name of that of that player so but there you go those are the names if you’re thinking about who the 15th roster spot is for if Spencer dwy would take the money and the rooll he’s perfect if Kyle L would take the money and the rooll he’s perfect Dennis Smith Jr would take the money and the roll I think that he would fit really well and I think he would bring a lot to the table those are the guys I’m looking at those
