all right let’s get to it on today’s show talking about summer league talking about rookies There’s Hope springing Eternal for your Toronto Raptors with four draft picks coming in maybe only three will be there at Summer League we’ll get into that we’ll talk about Grady dick and where he might uh figure into the summer league plans and we will do a little bit of a temperature check on the Bruce Brown will they or will won’t they trade him situation we’ll do it all with our dear pal Katie hindle who is here Katie you’re going to Vegas very soon you’re going for an interly long time I’m worried for you but I’m excited for you because I know you love that hot desert heat how the hell are you I’m doing well but I’m a bit worried because it seems like it’s the hottest heat it’s ever been in my experience see just I love walking into an oven I guess thankfully the Arenas have air conditioning where you can go and watch watch your Toronto Raptor rookies go do some stuff uh we yet to have had an announcement on the summer league roster for the Toronto Raptors but it does seem as though jacobe Walter Jonathan mobo and Jamal shed will be there Oris shamay is with the cameroonian national team for the pre-olympic qualifying tournament so maybe his participation will be dependent upon the results there and whether they qualify and all that stuff um so TBD there I think and then we’ll get into the rest of the Raptors guys who might be there we’ll talk about Grady dick coming up but Katie this feels like a bit of a throwback Raptor summer league a little bit kind of coming up here with uh some fresh faces some rookies and some guys who I think um stand a chance of kind of giving the summer league roster a little bit of structure and punch in a way that maybe hasn’t had in the last couple Seasons with you know only a couple of draft picks here and there over the last couple years uh what are you looking forward to what is like your most excitable thing what that’s not a sentence or a question what is the thing that is making you the most excited about the Toronto Raptors at Summer League this year well you already mentioned it it’s a pretty Pig heavy team I think you know in the past it’s like the spotlights been on one usually one guy more like I’m thinking back to Scotty barnes’s summer league debut Grady dicks last year um and then kind of like a roster sort of filled up with hopefuls um but less a comprehensive um Toronto team you know this and this feels a little bit more like the team’s DNA is uh more shot throughout the team which is cool so I’m interested to see I mean I think we always put a little bit too much stock in like will the team play like the parent team right it’s never really possible of course like the ethos will be there um but the coaching strategy should adapt to the team I mean generally I would be excited to see a toron like a competitive Toronto Raptor summer league team I feel like that has not been the case in my last few summer leagues um they usually fall out pretty quick so that would be sweet yeah it’d be great and I think you know the guy I think feels like a real summer league ass player to me is Jamal shed um just like guy who can come in run the team finger on the pulse obviously if you haven’t gone and seen the defensive exploits in film go watch them he’s incredible to watch super duper cool I was actually checking out this morning No Ceilings of course we had Max bomach from No Ceilings on the show in the draft lead up but that site on their YouTube channel had a breakdown of Jamal shed’s film with Jamal shed which is very cool um and just sort of sheds light on what he’s looking at when he’s playing defense in particular just an absolute Maniac on that end you love to see it um and so I’m super excited to see what he can do I’m under no Illusions Katie that Jamal shed the 45th overall pick is going to walk in day won and like steal a job with the Toronto Raptors but we’ve seen guys before kind of Pop those second round guys really pop in summer league and that sort of portends you know maybe a faster than expected arrival with the big Club I think of Norman Powell for example back in what was it 2016 where he absolutely tore it up in summer league comes into the regular season is a g-league guy for the first half of the year or so and then all of a sudden is starting games in spot situations and we all know what he did as a rookie in the first first round against the Indiana Pacers uh saving their season and eventually keeping the team on track to win a title many years later um what do you got your eye on with shed or maybe Jonathan mobo or or or jacobe Walter like any of those three guys in particular are you kind of keying in on something you’re looking for from them once we get to Summer League I think their Readiness overall um I I do think there’s something to be said for um like though I I have said this time and again I think that the draft is like a crapshoot and the is you know the number the numbering of picks doesn’t necessarily equate to readymade Talent OR ability um but that said I think you know the Raptors have oh there’s a dog Cameo the Raptors have historically done better when they pick in the kind of middle round I think some of the pressure is off a little bit you know as we said we’ve got almost like a pretty like pick heavy team so cohesiveness together because I’m sure they’re they’re with coaching staff is going to be playing them together to get a real feel for them um you mentioned defensive capabilities I think that’s going to be pretty important like defense sort of a loose loose summer league tenant yeah I feel like if you get it it’s always nice when it works but um ball movement I think is another is another good thing just like kind of the passing acument between these guys because that goes back to the cohesiveness I was talking about um you mentioned earlier like I think before we started recording but just like the the physical makeup of these guys is a lot all the same and it kind of matches a real Raptor Z prototype so I think you know to that length and potentially speed I will be looking to to see like are they able to try and like get a lot of Fest break points are they able to get up in transition a lot faster a lot quicker I mean length length doesn’t necessarily always translate to speed but that will usually give you a leg up in summer league as well especially to get started um so I think those things for starters yeah I I think all three guys I think their sort of skill sets in particular they mesh quite nicely I’m curious to see like this we could be seeing the early stages of what could two three years from now become like a bench mob type of situation with Walter mobo and shed if they all work out obviously the caveat second round picks like you’re lucky if one of these guys hits in sort of historical terms but I do think the guys they picked stand a pretty good shot as second rounders go um shed just sort of you know yes he’s six feet tall he plays much bigger defensively um and you know is in there at a position of great need for the Raptors when it comes to backup guard play and then mobo like you look at the positional chart of the Raptors he kind of is the only wing and backup big uh if you want to sort of squint and see him as that and I’m so I’m particularly curious to see how do they deploy mobo do they use him more as a wing do they use him as a big like is he running pick and roll with Jamal shed is he running dribble handoff stuff with jacobe Walter I think that’s kind of interesting to look into that might give us a glimpse as to what they view his NBA role to be we heard Bobby Webster talk about him as though he were a wing uh after the draft but I I think looking at the roster he probably is the best candidate as it stands right now to play backup center out of the gate just with the lack of guys who are not shooting guards on this team if you want to hear about all the shooting guards go listen to yesterday’s podcast but yeah that that’s uh it’s going to be fun I I think I I’m I’ve usually been kind of a summer league skeptic slash I’m going to you know kind of catch up and watch the condensed games and not really dig in but I think for the first time in quite some time I’m all in I’m going to be staying up to the Wi hours to watch these games and uh and get a feel for these guys because the way the roster set up I think a couple of them stand a chance of getting some minutes as early as year one um I do want to get into Katie the shooting guard situation as pertains to jacobe Walter and another guy who just might be there summer league Grady dick I’m fascinated to sort of dig into whether he should be there how long will he be there for what does he stand to gain from it we will get into Grady dick and his summer league fate coming up in just one sec today’s episode is brought to you Summer League at this point I feel like nobody appreciates the form quite as much as you do I mean yeah I guess at this point I think this is the first year I will be credential through Summer League versus Media right like I’m not gonna have a media credential so yes more or less very I’m getting closer to the to the central the central nucleus of Summer League I like to Envision you walking around Vegas with like a scepter and a crown as the the grand PBA of Summer League uh we’ll make this happen NBA let’s get on it um Katie let’s talk about Grady dick shall we he of course uh going into year two with the Raptors and it’s always a bit of a coin flip as to whether seconde guys will or will not go to summer league I think the sort of dream for most secondy Year guys is they go to summer league they light it up in their first game and then the team’s like all right go enjoy Vegas buddy you’ve done your job um that that feels like the the sort of Ideal vision for second year guy who kind of proves they’re too good for summer league we know grd Dick had an up and down season um you know with the start of the Year having like a couple of weeks where it looked like oh he might kind of fit into the rotation here then obviously a big down spell where he was missing shots he was physically not up to the speed and rigors of the NBA they put him through the workout regimen give him some protein shakes whatever that whole thing was and all of a sudden he’s playing NBA minutes and looking pretty good down the stretch for an albeit pretty bad Toronto Raptors team um what would your expectation be here gry dick like we we haven’t yet gotten the roster announced we might get that by the time you listen to this frankly I saw the Sixers summer league roster get announced today so we’re in that time zone where we could start to see this but before that official news comes down should grd dick be at Summer League do you think yeah I think he should um I think he’s got a lot to be gained I think just being again within a team ecosystem traveling with the team being around the coaching staff some of these coaches are obviously going to translate to his time with the Raptors next season um I think all of that is very valuable to him especially in terms of his confidence uh and also being a represent like a represent what am I having such hard repesentative I’m bad at words too you’re you’re fine I’m like representation representative um of the parent team you know uh I think it would go a long way I think also he’s G to be playing the most minutes I would say with some of these new guys depending on which one of yeah them kind of hit the most so I think that’s worthwhile too and we get to kind of see him step into more of a leadership Ro if they do have him playing and for how many games you know I don’t I don’t necessarily think just one game even if he has like a phenomenal first game like I’d still be interested to see him in at the first two maybe at least the first three depending how the team looks of course but yeah I absolutely think there should be an expectation that he’ll be on that roster I’m with you I feel like we’ve seen seconde guys sort of go less and less in recent years and yeah Grady Dick had had a really strong stretch in particular February where he looked like oh this guy is at home on an NBA floor and it’s very nice and exciting um that said there was still a lot of warts in his game and a lot of things to iron out and just like growth to be done as is to be expected from a 19-year-old jumping into the NBA for the first time um I think he should be there as well I would be totally fine if he played the whole run again like you you’re sort of you’re laying down the seeds of potential second units Shadow course type type stuff for this team going forward um like they did in the past in you know the 2015 through 18 stretch where they were just this Player Development monster and I don’t think there is literally any downside to having Grady dick going and playing the whole run of Summer League with Jamal shed Jonathan mobo uh jacobe Walter like put those four guys on the floor together that sounds like a blast to me you have you know little pick and roll with shed and mobo and Walter and Dick flying around and catching off the you off the move like that sounds really exciting to me and something I’m keen on staying up late to watch even if the game started at 11 o’clock um on the Grady dick conversation I think you know we spoke about him a little bit recently on a previous episode and sort of what he’s got to work on this summer what what what to sort of expect from him going into year two I do think his status within the team is one of the more interesting guys to examine right now when you look at the state of the roster obviously we’ve talked about this we’ll get into the Bruce Brown thing a little bit more to close out the show but uh there’s a lot of shooting guards on this roster there’s a lot of positional overlap and there is just like I think if Gary Trent Jr walks a very open question as to who the fifth starter on this team is going to be uh you know you could talk me into going big and having Kelly oin yaka Purtle in the front Court you could talk me into uh Bruce Brown if he’s on the team you know getting in there even though I think that might be tough for the offense but there is the argument to be made that if Gary TR TR Jr walks the most likeforlike replacement in the starting five would be Grady dick and the lineup that featured quickly Gary Trent Jr RJ Barrett Scotty Barnes yaka purle last season was kind of the best thing they put on the floor at any point during the season for any sort of extended run it was one of their most used lineups they only played like 10 games together but they absolutely ran teams off the floor to the tune of plus 12 points per 100 possessions not to say Grady dick you put him in for for Gary Trent Jr and it’s an instant replication of that lineup and the sort of chemistry they had but geometrically skill setwise it makes some sense what is your read on Grady like would you be comfortable going into next season with him as the starter considering there probably isn’t a whole lot in terms of high-end ambition for this team next season maybe let him take his lumps or is it too soon to throw him into the starting five what do you think dude I think I like at the beginning of last season I was like we’re going to see him playing some starting minutes I last year at the start of the Year said he was going to be the best plus minus guy off of the bench which was stupid and against everything I believe about rookies but I got swooned by the movement off the ball so I but I mean like given that I was quite ahead of the the curve maybe but I was over ahead of myself but I think that’s pretty likely um and I think like yeah let him let him go in and mess up honestly like as you said the expectations for the team are pretty reasonable be and stay competitive next season uh if he can do that and establish some continuity Rhythm I think that’s good for him because of course like the flashes we’ve seen from him where he does have that he looks fantastic he looks super confident you know and then sometimes that goes away very quickly so I think for him consistency is key hence why I think the summer league reps as much as they give him are going to be fantastic for him uh and yeah like give him a starting yeah I think as of today like not permanently right I just want to clarify but yeah like toss him into some of those lineups here and there sure I I yeah I think as of today uh he would be my starting two guard for the Raptors I I think you know they have a lot invested in him obviously he was a lottery pick he has the skill sets to to sort of offset or or sort of complement what the other best players on the team do um and I think you know the the flashes he showed last year of fitting into the system that darkar rakovich wants to run the sort of making the next pass and play in the sequence like I think that is all there the defense obviously is the massive question mark here but defense was also a pretty massive question mark with Gary Trent Jr and the the sort of thing that puts it over the top for me is I think Grady dick is the type of player who is always going to be best playing with better players he amplifies better players better players will amplify him I think I think if he’s playing in second units with you know Davon Mitchell or Jamal shed running point and um you know some suspect you know guys fing it on the wing or just like younger guys with less experience I think that could be a context in which he really struggles and so why not put him in the best possible situation to succeed and have a lineup you know to be your starting group that plays you know 15 20 minutes a game together guys who they’re all invested in guys who were all under contract for a long time here give it some time to grow and build into something and learn hey like can RJ Barrett hang into three is Grady dick a starting level player long term I think I’m with you I think I would just start him right now you know obviously subject to change if Bruce Brown gets dealt for a wing who’s able to step into that spot but um as of right now I I see no despite the many many shooting guards on the roster I think I would have Grady dick uh put into that position right now in my sort of theoretical dep chart uh let’s come back into the side Katie round it out with a quick talk about where things sit with Bruce Brown and uh you know do we want to see a trade just for the sake of a trade is there a trade out there that makes sense is there like a sign in trade with a Caleb Martin possible we’ll get into all that coming up in just one second to close up the show back at it here rounding it out with Katie hindle from basketball feelings a reminder locked on sports today 247 is your all day streaming Channel go check it out wherever you get uh it’s on YouTube that’s where you go it’s not wherever it’s just on YouTube go check it out and have it run all day long when you’re working maybe you don’t want to work maybe you just want that white noise on in the background talking Sports lock on sports today is your place to get the local stories and the national stories covered by the locked on host in only the way that we can all right Katie uh we’re now on what is it day five of Bruce Brown watch since his option was picked up last Friday um or Saturday I guess it was we are still waiting to see if the Toronto Raptors have a trade in the hopper for him or if is just going to come into the season as an expiring contract they maybe look to move at the trade deadline um what what how do you feel about this whole thing here Katie I think I fully come around to I like Bruce Brown as a dude and I would not be like mad if he’s on the Raptors but it seems like maybe Asset Management wise if we want to get ghoulish about it all just declining his contract and opening up some salary cap space to go and try to pay somebody to come in and balance out the roster positionally might have been the better move obviously subject to change if they can go and pull off a trade for Bruce Brown that brings in a cam Johnson or whichever Wing you please uh what’s your sort of read on where things sit right now I there has been so little reporting about Bruce Brown and potential targets that it almost is like weird to me um it almost makes me think that something isn’t fact up but I I have no idea I’m just grasping at straws it’s July 3rd Katie um what’s your sort of General read and temper Richard check on the Bruce Brown situation as it stands here Wednesday morning July the 3D with of course plenty of opportunity for things to change I think because of the lack of reporting um you know that’s that’s not surprising that’s not surprising we don’t really tend to know the plant of the Raptors even some Toronto Raptors insiders get things very wrong days before they happen so I think um I wouldn’t be surprised if they held on to him into the season h ly I think when I my first like gut reaction to them picking up that option was like this is going to be maybe someone they hold on to and see what happens maybe mid Midway through the season I don’t know why that was just kind of my sense because it didn’t feel to me they were trying to make some big kind of you know roster shaping moves this summer given the picks that they had in the draft also I think the reticence of the front office in the past to like make big swings and like now is not really the time for that right no um I do look at someone like you know kcp leaving the nuggets and I think of you know they’re a little bit different but in terms of what the market is for for guys like that I do think Bruce Brown is still in that kind of category so obviously team would be looking for it but I imagine once the kind of big Superstar sort of sweep STI settle down that would be the prime time for the front office to go and look and see like you know all right who wants to wor up their roster with somebody like Bruce brownon with his skill set again and I’m trying to get to the bottom of whether this is like a latent Toronto guilt like sports fandom thing or if this is just true but like I love Bruce Brown on the Raptors I don’t think it’s this iteration of the team though yeah and that’s like the guilt in me am I like do I am I genuinely like I want the best for him and it shouldn’t be here cuz obviously like not having the worst go of it you know from everything I’ve heard like he’s not totally he seems chill he seems chill eating Tim bits and having coffee and stuff doesn’t seem dissatisfied but I also wonder you know for him you know this team is not at the competitive place they want to be maybe that’s not what he wants maybe he’s happy to like be the vet in the locker room so I don’t think there’s any urgency necessarily to make to make a trade out of Bruce Brown and make something happen which is why I could see them waiting a little longer yeah I mean it’s it’s hard to make trades in the new sort of financial landscape too right and so I I do think you know I’ve kind of made this point he’s not anyone’s plan a right like I I think a lot of these teams are kind of looking around hey can we sign someone with salary caps bace or be level exception to get that type of player you know trading for a guy who makes $23 million is a little bit harder to fit into the books and all of that I do wonder if it’s maybe something that happens after after the moror amends people start signing the order of operations of moves takes place and then everyone kind of sees where they’re at and maybe that’s when a move can materialize um you know the thing I’m with you it doesn’t seem like they’re super urgent to move him right now um and you know they very well could be fine just rolling into the season with him that has been their history of hey like you know we can’t find what we want right now we’ll hold on and you know sometimes it works for us and sometimes it’s the pass G aam trade um but with Bruce like I I think just because the roster is so IM balanced and has so many guys who are like 65 and under and so few guys who fill in the big man spots and the wing spots it just feels like something’s got to give here even if they’re not trying to be competitive next season I I made this point yesterday I’ve made it a few days in a row now but like building a roster that sort of makes cohesive sense is not just about making the plan or making a push or going all in it’s about setting up a roster that makes sense developmentally for your players it’s kind of the reason why I like to see GR dick in the starting five because that’s a sensible developmental context for him and I think it’s a lot harder to do that when you have so much positional overlap yes competition for spots is nice but having seven guys competing for the two guard spot maybe a little bit much and a bit of an over over correction and so it just feels like something’s got to give but the sort of there’s also this nagging thing in the back of my head that says this run office is really patient and maybe to a fault sometimes and they’re not going to force themselves into a move you know the guy who still is out there free agent wise is Caleb Martin um you know I think Bleacher Report kind of kicked around the idea of Caleb Martin Bruce Brown signage trade which I think is difficult because I don’t think the Raptors would be in the sort of world rther paying Caleb Martin Bruce Brown money and so that gets really tricky to sort of match salaries and the legalities of it all probably aren’t even legal but um Caleb Martin Katie let’s quickly talk about him as one of the last remaining free agents who happens to play a position the Raptors need any thoughts there on Caleb Barton is some of the Raptors should go and try to get on the team over the next little bit here sure that’s the point of the offseason we’re at Katie sure why not uh I just like I guess it’s not necessarily just like um is it an is it a quote upgrade you know like is it someone positionally positionally it is you know quality of player I’d probably honestly take Bruce in a vacuum over Caleb Martin but positionally I think it might be worth the swap which is why I kind of Wonder given every like position only is one thing but we know that’s not really how the front office makes its moves historically right and like what they kind of weigh against it which is again why I think like if that’s who the only person granted like that’s just what we’ve seen floated right by one place but if that’s who’s out there again I think that speaks more to the front office probably not rushing this yeah and it needs to be noted the Raptors have 15 guaranteed roster spots that stands right now and so you know something what else have to give whether it’s a Bruce Brown swap or they find a way to trade crew Chris bue somewhere um you know there there’s what’s going on with Gary Gary is not coming back to the Toronto Raptors I would think I would guess he’s probably gonna go have to sign like a small Pro it deal with some team which this uh new CBA Katie real not friendly to the non-star tier of the NBA it seems but you know I guess the players negotiated it um we can leave it there though Katy Caleb Martin my quick take uh he’s fine like I’m worried about Miami Heat pixie dust rubbing off of any guy who leaves Miami and like are they this player they were in Miami um I just like the heat seemed to know how to get the very very most out of guys in a way I’m not sure the Raptors have totally proven of late but um you know as a wing I would be in just anyone who’s 68 would be just a delight Katie I’m just Pro 68 and above at this at this point um but that’s uh you know gotta have some hopes and dreams in the offseason right you do um yeah anyway Katie I hope and dream that we podcast again very soon because you’re the best do you have anything you want to promote for the good people out there NADA ra basketball feelings um yeah read basketball feelings awesome go read basketball In Episode 1671, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (Basketball Feelings) to talk about their excitement to watch Toronto Raptors rookies Ja’Kobe Walter, Jonathan Mogbo, Jamal Shead and (maybe?) at Las Vegas Summer League, and examine whether or not Gradey Dick should be joining the Raptors’ recent draft picks in Vegas this month. Off the top, they chat about why this is shaping up to be a much more exciting Summer League roster for the Raptors than we’ve seen in recent years, and what about the games of Shead, Mogbo and Walter they’re looking forward to see on display. Next, they chat about second-year Raptors Gradey Dick and why they think he should absolutely be with the Summer League squad before taking a look at whether or not Dick will be a starter for the Raptors come October. Lastly, they take a temperature on the ongoing silence about Bruce Brown, chat about Caleb Martin as a potential free agent or sign-and-trade target and more!

I would give Gradey, Ochai, Walter, Mogbo all the on-ball reps they can handle.
Have Shead play more off-ball and work on his shooting.
Grady gonna be the leader of the group lot of responsibility to show the guys what he knows and what to expect
Hopefully Gradey makes it to the summer league roster, i don’t feel he’s good enough to not be there.
Why do you give the Hamas supporter a platform?
If Gradey Dick will be there ??? The guy did nothing in his rookie season to give him an exemption of playing in Summer league .
