fanduel.com locked on FanDuel official sports betting partner of the NBA and joining us now is the host of locked on Magic Philip Rosman Reich you can track down wherever you’re listen to your podcast or on YouTube just search locked on Magic here to discuss Orlando Magic and what they’ve accomplished so far in free agency picking up cavius Caldwell Pope signing him to a three-year deal worth 60 $6 million want to talk about what kcp specifically brings to this Orlando Magic team Philip but first what made kcp the right free agency choice for the magic as opposed to you know some of the rumors right about them potentially wanting to pursue Klay Thompson or even at one point in time right potentially being linked to Paul George obviously having all that money to spend in this free agency period what made kcp the right choice for this magic team I think I think the biggest thing is that they’re very clearly stating that poo Bano and fron vogner are guys and they didn’t want to bring in someone that might take away shots take away kind of on ball responsibilities kind of take kind of change the role at the end of the day like the criticism of Jeff Walman the president of basketball operations for the Orlando Magic is that he loves his continuity he loves things to kind of be the same and to and for the team to kind of grow naturally the way that they have and to me kadius called W Pope is like a Gary Harris plus Gary Harris was starting at the shooting guard spot next to Jaylen Suggs and you know he wasn’t someone that demanded the ball a lot he defended well kavus scw Pope does a lot of that scores a little bit more shoots a few more threes defends a defends a little bit better he kind of helps keep that boat steady to build off of what the magic did with their 47 win season last year because at the end of the day while the magic did make some significant progress last year there’s still a young team trying to develop and grow and I think the magic needed someone or wanted someone that would kind of Foster and develop that develop that growth a little bit more rather than someone that might change the Dynamics within the team yeah I mean kcp shooting is going to be a huge Plus for this team team that was 29th in three-point attempts and then 24th in three-point percentage this past season that’s going to be a huge Plus for them right out of the gate yeah absolutely and I’m a big believer that you know it’s not just about the shooting percentage it’s not just about your three-point field goal percentage and KP is obviously a fantastic shooter on that front it’s the threat of your shooting and kcp is someone that I think the rest of the league understands this is a good shooter we cannot leave this guy we cannot let this guy get open and for the magic they just they need players like that they need players that are going to attract defensive attention regardless of whether they have the ball or not and so that’s going to give space for pao and fron to to get downhill and get to the basket for the magic to generate more points hopefully it’s always funny how like kind of NBA scouting reports work where you’ll get guys who are just perceived as like these knockdown Shooters even if they’re having a down year or like a rough stretch where they’re just not shooting the basketball well other Defenders treat them like oh we still got to close out on right kcp could be having a rough like twoe shooting Strat and opposing defense are still going to close out on him hard Rush him off the three-point line and that kind of spacing is invaluable for blossoming star players like like you’ve talked about with B Caro and and France Vagner so at the end of the day when you look too at the at the defensive side of things I’m really excited just as as an unbiased third party here about the backcourt defense of now a jayen Suggs canavis calwell calwell Pope wow that’s a mouth that’s a mouth name kyp we’re going to stick with that kyp that is going to be one of the best defensive back courts if not possibly the best defensive back court in the entire NBA this next season yeah it’s it’s definitely a thing I mean kcp was got 11 votes for all defensive team for second Team all defensive team so you have a guy on Jaylen Su who was second second Team all defensive team and now kcp adding to the third best defense in the League last year Jonathan Isaac coming off the bench you know hopefully getting a healthy summer to to grow grow his skills grow his skills for the first time since 2019 this is you know to me a lot of this is the magic doubling down on their Foundation they saw what worked what led to their success last year got them to the five seed in Eastern Conference got them to a game seven on the road in Cleveland really a halfway from advancing to the second round they know defense is their identity they double down on that and some people may say well Orlando needs to get some offense they absolutely do but a big part of their development is still going to be poo banero getting better a 21-year old forward all 21 21y Old All-Star forward getting better fron Vagner getting better they know that they have a lot of young players who they have a lot of faith in this is about giving them the kind of Supporting Cast they need to be their best and so when we look at what else the magic are going to be able to do here in this offseason in free agency how much more money do they have to work with to spend in free agency and what are some of the other kind of glaring needs or pressing needs you know areas that they want to try and uh flesh out a little bit on the roster as we navigate the rest of free agency here yeah it’s it’s it’s unclear how much money the magic have left because it depends on how the contavious calwell pope contract a if it’s a flat you know $22 million per year for those three seasons then they have around $28 million in cap room if it’s uh structured so that he’s paid the FL the least he could be at the beginning or just 5% raises they have around $30 million in cap room left so they still have some real spending power in the market they they didn’t go out and just throw all their money at one guy it’s really unclear where the magic going go uh because they could still maybe use a rim protector there’s been some report there’s been some rumors that the magic would be chasing Isaiah hartenstein uh competing with the Oklahoma City Thunder for him he’s expected to get a contract in the same kind of range 23 to $25 million a year the magic could still very much be players for him if that happens then that opens the door to them perhaps trading wend Carter and using his salary to add in another High Caliber player Orlando obviously needs shooting I think there are some really interesting Shooters on the market if the magic want to bring a veteran shooter to kind of compete with jet Howard or some of their young players uh for minutes off the bench and you know I’m a big b i I expect the magic to bring back Mo Vagner on the on the room mid-level exception uh to be their backup center but the magic also could use some depth at Center uh gendo Carter typically misses about 15 games a year I don’t think he’s played more than 67 games in any SE any season of his career so they magic will need another strong third Center whether that’s bringing back Goa pataz you know chasing Jaylen Jaylen Smith perhaps from the from the Indiana Pacers um the magic still have some work to do to bolster their depth and just kind of secure their roster so that they’re ready to kind of to repeat what they did last year I I know you mentioned the idea of adding some Shooters are there any specific names that you should that that magic fans should have on their radar that the the magic could be pursuing yeah I mean we know the magic like these kind of long uh athletic kind of switching wings and so those are kind of the hardest guys to find them and everybody else in the NBA them and everybody else I mean the Celtics have kind of made it made it like oh yes every position should switch it’s it’s great um the guys that I’ve had my eye on are Gary Trent Jr from the Toronto Raptors um I believe he I believe he opted out of his contract um a little bit on the smaller side but has been a good defender in the past excellent kind of high volume shooter to me you mentioned it earlier the magic were 29th in the league and three-point field goal attempts last year more than increasing the percentage I think increasing their three-point volume will go a long way to helping helping build the offense a little bit teams were able to kind of sink in the paint wen’t concerned about the magic even attempting threes let alone making them um uh and so I think I think finding some volume Shooters I’ve honestly had my eye on buddy heel I think you could get him at a bargain after after the the season that he had with the Philadelphia 76 or the half season he had with the Philadelphia 76ers he wasn’t happy with his contract situation even even in his time at Indiana um but we saw in the playoffs he came in in game six against the Knicks had what 18 points 20 points in the first half he’s someone that can put up a lot of Threes get really hot really quickly uh and so he’s he’s a name that I’ve had had my eye on for a little while too you could probably get him at probably at like a oneye $10 million deal if he’s looking for make good to try and try and get get going here they don’t help the magic necessarily defensively but these guys would also probably be in lineups with Jonathan ISAC on the floor fron vogner is another good Defender you can mix in kyp in there as well um they’re they the magic can mix and match defensively and maintain their defense while sacrificing it a little bit to get some three-point shooting Off the Bench all right Philip I’m going to get it right this time on the way out okay how will cavius Caldwell Pope help Elevate the Orlando Magic after being signed there what other moves will the magic be making in free agency you’re going to have his covered for all of that and so much more locked on Magic Philip thanks for stopping by locked on NBA with me thanks for having me on man [Music]

KCP is an advantage over Klay. Younger, 40%+ from 3P FG% the last two years, an excellent defender and no major injury history.
I Agree
Buddy Hield 🔥
Nobody wants to take less money to help Bronny… lol
