NBA Free Agency UPDATE: DeMar DeRozan to the Lakers? | CBS Sports

welcome to CB Sports HQ presented by Geico get more with Geico I’m made to Gar Chris Hassel Ashley Nicole Moss with you uh Donovan Mitchell getting a big deal to stay with the Cavs Ashley as our producer Jack I don’t know if this is true apparently wanted him he has said yes to another team you were swiping wanted him on the knck yeah clarifying we’re just going to clarify on the sorry once upon a time it was true but uh we move on to bigger and better things I’m happy with the squad that we have so okay well the Cavs were pretty good this past season they were the four seed in the East they finally won a a playoff series Without LeBron James first time in 30 plus years that they had done that as we continue on with NBA free agency with most of the the big names now signing but Donovan Mitchell three-year extension worth $150 million as confirmed by our NBA Insider Bill Ryder made the playoffs in two consecutive seasons including the second round this year Kenny Atkinson the new head coach there uh so the Cavs look having uh some success now in the post LeBron James era you had to do this right how do you feel about it listen you’re right you had to do this I think that the Cavs are close not as close as maybe they would like to be on their timetable but they’re not the caves of the Past after the LeBron era right there’s a lot of promise there Donovan Mitchell is a key part of that promise and you had to go ahead and keep him happy this is a good sign if you’re a Cleveland Cavs fan if if you’re in that Cleveland Cavaliers front office because there were a lot of indications because of how much they underperformed in terms of what Donovan Mitchell expected going into this situation that he would look for a team that was better suited for what he wants right now the fact that he went ahead and signed this extension means he believes in what the Cavs are building specifically what Kobe Altman the president of basketball operations and his vision to bring the Cavs back into Championship cont attension and this shows that Donovan Mitchell is a part of not only what happens on the court but also what happens behind the scenes I have no um I don’t believe that Donovan Mitchell had no parts of of what is going to happen and what is already happen with this Cavaliers organization he is going to be the new Lebron in the sense of anything that happens with this team is going to go through him and he’s going to have a Hands-On um opportunity to build a team that can win a championship to his liking we’ve seen a lot of movement in the East this offseason this free agency uh the Knicks initially the 76ers uh kind of blew them out of the water with a lot of the moves that they made uh the magic getting kcp the Knicks were the four seed last season at the end of it where do you have them right now in the pecking order so it’s interesting right I think when you look at the Eastern Conference I think the safe bet is the Celtics Knicks 76ers are your top dogs I actually have the Orlando Magic I know Jaclyn would like this very much ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers especially with getting kcp one of the best defensive players in the NBA the offense is already there now you get more offense with him he’s a phenomenal three-point shooter I had the caves right below the Orlando Magic I had them over the Bucks because I’m not a big believer in what the Milwaukee Bucks are building you guys already know on Beyond The Ark we’re not big fans of Doc Rivers but we also have a lot of questions about the the duo of Giannis and Dame it hasn’t seemed like they figured out how to play well together and again all the questions about injuries and defensively they got worse when they let Drew holiday walk to Boston who by the way is chilling cuz he’s an NBA champion once again and just got an extension with the Boston Celtics who are locking up their core Jason Tatum is well he was he was supposed to be joining us today but then he got well at least got close to a record setting NBA I was working on that interview for about 40 minutes and it threw off my whole morning I didn’t even have time to do my hair the way that I wanted to my hair was not supposed to look like this I’m rushing out because Jason Tatum decided to cancel on us last minute so my hair is not what I want it to be so Jason not only do you owe me another interview but you may owe me a couple hair ties that I broke in the process of trying to go ahead and make this happen 3 he can afford it exactly that is going to be an N buy an entire Salon I’m saying something I need something the Boston Celtics are are trying to keep this thing together how do you feel about what they’ve done so far this off season very very impressive I mean when you talk about winning a championship and with the new CBA and everything that comes with that guys want to get paid and rightfully so and I think that it’s so impressive I mean look at these contracts when we talk about this core five for the Boston Celtics we’re looking at almost a billion dollar on the books 939 million to be exact first of all I wasn’t a believer in Lucky the leprechaun I thought it was a ridiculous Mas mascot but apparently the pot of gold situation is real because where are they getting this money from almost a billion dollars on the books for their core five it’s absolutely incredible that they have been able to do this the way they have done it being able to lock in not only Jaylen Brown and Jason Tatum which I think were given but all the pieces that have surrounded them especially when you talk about the core unit this is what championship teams dynasties rather are made of and this is how you build it by chemistry continuity and the Boston Celtics have done that tremendously well every fer office in the NBA is looking at what the Boston Celtics have been able to do and figuring out a way that they can replicate it because this is how you build a dynasty big big money for Jason Tatum congratulations to him uh look we have seen a frenzy and free agency a lot of the big names are gone the biggest name still out there beond LeBron James is going to sign with the Lakers Demar D rozan with the bulls uh free agent though do we see him go any where else what happens to him a lot of people say look the Lakers have been super quiet but I don’t know if he fits in there what do you think the Lakers have been uh scarily quiet and not in a good way listen it’s um the Lakers got to figure something out they lost out on Klay Thompson they’ve lost that on Donovan Mitchell who was also reportedly on their radar uh you know they lost out on Trey young who’s not going to be going to the Lakers because of him signing with clutch they’ve lost out on every single prospect that has been on their radar and LeBron James list now Demar D rozan is a name that he reportedly would take a pay cut for but yesterday they said reports rather were saying that LeBron and the pay cut are a no-o he’s not doing that anymore since Klay Thompson signed to the Dallas Mavericks so if you’re Demar D rozan you kind of feel insulted I know I would like you would take a pay cut for him and not for me but I think Demar is the last option that makes sense for the Lakers now granted he’s not the best defender and defensively the Lakers do have some issues but he gives you enough of an offensive punch to kind of take them slightly over the edge but it reminds me although different positions a lot of Russell Westbrook which is when he’s good he’s good but he tends to be shaky at this stage in his career and the last thing the Lakers need is more inconsistency especially when you have Anthony Davis especially when you have an aging LeBron James and not a lot of pieces around them the Lakers just dug themselves in a very deep hole not going ahead and attacking who was out there in Free Agents see everybody’s locked up everyone’s in a long-term deal if they’re not locked up or didn’t just get locked up I don’t know what you do if you’re the Los Angeles Lakers but I know LeBron James is not very happy so when it comes to Demar de rozan though if it’s not the Lakers do is there somewhere you like him to go I would like him to go to an LA team whether it’s the Clippers or the Lakers I think that the Lakers can go ahead and give him the money that he would be looking for more than I think that the Clippers could but if you’re talking about which team is better suited for what Demar would want which was assume to win that’s interesting right because on paper you would say it’s the Clippers James Harden kawh Leonard kawai’s always injured James Harden goes missing in the playoffs in the other conversation you have the Lakers LeBron James one of the greatest players we’ve ever seen but there’s not a lot of pieces on that roster to go ahead and push all the way through especially in a western conference that has gotten younger has gotten deeper has gotten more competitive but at this stage in dear’s career I think it’s anywhere but Chicago just free that man it’s not working and with the Lakers right now it’s it’s more about the the younger pieces and today is the day they’re going to introduce bronnie and Dalton connect to the audience how do you rate this off season so far for La a team that felt like they needed to do something to capitalize on LeBron James and they haven’t mediocre maybe was that a c c minus um listen I don’t know if the Lakers have done what they were supposed to do in terms of making this team a true Contender making this team a a unit that can really go ahead and deliver what LeBron wants and that is another shot at a championship they haven’t gotten better offensively they slightly got better defensively but you’re talking about Landing a big fish to round out the duo of Davis and LeBron James and they haven’t gotten that and you can’t consistently rely on LeBron who’s about to be 40 years old and Anthony Davis don’t want to discredit him he’s coming off a phenomen Al season probably his most productive season in years but how is that the norm his new Norm or is that an exception to the rule we know Anthony Davis also is one of those players who’s chronically injured I don’t know if they have given themselves the best shot to alleviate of both those pressures with what they have done in free agency they didn’t land a third option and they desperately desperately needed a third option for LeBron James and they haven’t found one actually Nicole moss part of the Beyond The Arc podcast you got a new one today
