year we’ll talk about that in today’s episode of the lockdown Pistons podcast you are locked on Pistons your daily Detroit Pistons podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day sneaky move up their sleeve that obviously we don’t know and can’t see yet um just an update on the current roster and the current standpoint of where this TEAM stands at this point in free agency so I do want to give you guys this update though for those of you guys watching on YouTube you guys are going to see me in this same outfit for the next three episodes because I’m recording this all I’m recording next three episodes today this is the 4th of July so happy 4th of July to everybody I’m recording all the episodes that I’m planning out for a while I’m gone over the next week anyone who didn’t know I’ve said it a few times but I will be gone for the next week so I’m playing ahead episode for you guys um so this one will be posted on Friday I have a few episodes already scheduled out for you guys on Monday and Tuesday so stay tuned for that um I’m holding out I haven’t recorded the episode for the 4th of July yet I’m waiting to the very last second in hopes that the p do something and I can cover it because I I really would be disappointed if they waited until I was gone to do it but um we’ll see how that goes you guys will be able to tell by the episodes I get put out whether that happens or not um but anyways let’s go ahead and get into it so Will Ron Holland play immediately now Ron Holland is the Detroit Pistons fifth overall pick of this last draft obviously um extremely high ceiling Prospect um a really damn good athlete good slasher we’ve talked about Ron Holland on the podcast already I we’ve had our friend of the podcast how come on the podcast and talk about Ry Holland as a prospect we’ve had Bryce Simon come the podcast and talk about uh Ron Holland as a prospect um but I I don’t know if I think the question of whether Ron Holland plays immediately is kind of out of his hands I think it kind of goes above him how good of a prospect he is how good of a player he is I think it kind of goes above him at this point um and I honestly don’t think we’ll know what the P whether he’ll be able to to actually crack the rotation till everyone sees how the Pistons finish out their off seon um so if we want to just go through what as of the fourth I’m recording this as of the fourth what the Pistons starting lineup and what the rotation may look like this let just spitball here um so let’s go ahead and say you got Cade you got Jaye Ivy got simoney fonio you got Stu and then you got uh Jaylen Duren backing up right now you have thj you have and this isn’t again this is just spit BL isn’t really the L and benu just guys coming off my head so you got thj you got Sasser you got uh Tobias Harris and you got assar Thompson so that’s nine guys right there that I just named um that figure to be a part of the rotation and the Pistons still at this point that I’m recording this have around 26 and a half million dollars left in free agency and we’ll talk about that in the second SE segment uh in a little bit but as of right now looking at that rotation looking at the roster as of right now again as of right now it is a little tough to see okay where is Ron Holland going to fit in at and who is he going to be taking minutes from he’s not gonna be taking minutes from at this point again things could completely change that’s why it’s tough to have this conversation right now but he’s not gonna take minutes from Ivy I don’t think he’s not gonna be taking all the minutes from assar he’s not gonna be taking minutes from Tobias so where is he fitting in at so I want to say as of right now that I’m leaning towards he’ll be brought along slowly and you’ll see him in the G League quite a bit at the beginning of the year that’s where I initially want to lean towards that it’s just a numbers game and until the Pistons make a move that maybe cut down the potential rotation player spots that I don’t see the the serious pathway for him to minutes that’s where I’m leaning however over the last few years we have watched the Detroit Pistons play every single one of their top picks immediately I’m not sure there has been a top pick the Pistons haven’t played almost instantly going all the way back to Killian Hayes’s draft Killian Haye started right out the gate you got sadique who was relatively part of the rotation I know he missed like the first like four games or something but he cracked the rotation like within the first 10 games of the year Isaiah Stewart same thing now obviously K Cunningham Jane Ivy was in the rotation instantly Jaylen durren was in the rotation instantly masar Thompson was in the rotation instantly heck even Marcus Sasser was kind of in and out of the rotation instantly as well so it’s like is this G the first year that the Detroit Pistons just don’t play one of their top five picks instantly and some of those guys I just named obviously weren’t top five picks Hayes was seventh sadik I believe was like 16th and then isaah was like 19th somewhere around I I may have those two mixed up um but not all of them were top five picks is what my point is you got durren who’s at the end of the lottery so is this gonna be the first pick where the Pistons just don’t play him out the gate that’s tough for me to believe for a few reasons one because of like I just said that they’ve played all their guys recently right off the game um the second reason why I find it hard to believe this is Tran Lan’s guy now he inherited the roster that is led by K Cunningham so you’d figure that Kade is his guy like you figure that he is a absolute huge fan of Cade whatever and it sounds like they’re getting close to a Max extension they’re going to sign so you’d figure that but if we want to be real if we all just want to be completely real the only guy here that tran has legit ties to and and maybe I guess you could say feels um what’s the right word I don’t want to say responsible but I think you guys get what I’m saying the only guy that’s really Tran’s guy is obviously Ron Holland so far so I feel like he will PR he will be prioritized this year and I know some people will say well that doesn’t mean he has to play immediately in the NBA he could be prioritized in the G League completely fair but I just I think that I think they will a large part of me feel like they’ll find a way to fit him into the rotation because of that because this is Tran’s guy that’s second and thirdly I think with Tran’s comments about how and again it’s it’s hard to rec record these episodes out in the future because like I said I’m recording this on the fourth and the Pistons still have 26 and a half million dollars left so maybe they make a trade while I’m gone maybe they make a trade within the next 24 hours that completely changes all of this that changes the belief of what this team is doing this year who knows but as of right now trean Lon has said over over and over and over again reports have come out over and over and over again that they want to trade for assets and I think the takeaway from that from a lot of people including myself is that they view this year or trasan views this year not so much of a we have to make this big step forward this year more so again of just laying down the cement of his his his era they want to be better they don’t want to be the worst team in the league obviously but they’re not trying to like make moves to immediately win now I don’t think I I don’t think that’s what they’re trying to do I don’t think Tran’s comments after drafting Ron Holland I don’t think his comments in his introductory press conference would make you believe that that is something that they’re trying to do now I have said on numerous occasions that tran keeps a lot of things close to the chest he is very I don’t think you’re gonna see many leagues come out of this front office so it’s very very possible I I’m I’m leaving it completely open that tran does the complete opposite of what people are thinking that is completely possible he may just not be revealing his cards to anybody he did the same thing with Ron Holland but if we are to make that correct takeaway from what his comments are if this is more so just a laye the groundwork uh year and they’re not trying to win that many games and this is another de developmental year why are you why would you not play Ron Holland right out the gate why would you not at least get doesn’t mean you have to play him 30 minutes why would you not give him some rotation minutes right out the gate to see how he stands um and where he’s at right now um so I think that’s another reason Reon why I tend to right now I’m leaning towards just looking at the numbers game like I don’t see where it fits but there’s a large part of me that’s saying they’ll find a way to make it work and then the last thing is this I think it kind of depends also on how impactful Ron Holland is on the defensive end immediately um obviously he’s a if he’s able to shoot the ball extremely well out the gate he’ll play but I’m talking about stuff that’s within realistic outcomes he has not been a good shooter so then saying well yeah if he shoots 40% well yeah no duh If he if y of a sudden he has a crazy outlier development within one off season before his NBA care even starts then yeah obviously he’d play but something that’s within realistic possibilities JB Bricker staff which you guys will hear on the episode where record with lock on capsules Danny Cunningham he’s going to build a foundation on defense he’s going to get the absolute best out of Def out of his players on the defensive end and he wants to prioritize that so if Ron Holland can be an impactful Defender if he is ahead of the curve defensively I think that would be his Pathway to forcing minutes immediately if he’s behind uh you know if he’s behind on the defensive end I think that may keep him out the rotation um so I really right now it’s hard to answer with a for sure yes or a for sure no I can see a pathway being created for him because he is Tran’s Guy and because they have played all their other recent first round picks immediately I can see that happening but as of right now with the numbers game it is and with who’s ahead of him I struggle to see without making a move where his immediate minutes are coming from so that’s where I stand with Ron Holland immediately cracking the Pistons rotation we’ll see how it goes we’ll see what happens um I’m not ruling out anything and we have to see how the Pistons play out the rest of the offseason and speaking of that do the Detroit Pistons have a sneaky move left up their sleeve with their 26 and a half million dollars left in free agency in this offseason I guess we’ll find out pretty soon passion drive and patience the formula for winning that subscribe button you YouTube channel or leave us a five star review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on that’s another great way to support the podcast I’ll continue to mention it just so everyone is aware at all times I am recording this on the 4th of July it will be published out on the 5th so that’s where that’s the timing of this recording at this time the Detroit Pistons have around 26 and a half million dollars left in cap space um they also are going to have um U an exception they can use in free agency as well so there is a possibility that the Pistons can make quite a few more signings and as the time goes on and as teams continue to use up some of their cap space and some of these players remain some of these potentially impactful players remain you may get them from more of a bargain now one of those players that we mentioned was Buddy hee now as of today he has signed a trade or he has been signed and traded I should say to the Golden State Warrior so buddy hee is off the table but there are players still left out there that the Piston could potentially be interested in backup point guards you got Gary Trent Jr out there you got Luke Gard out there there are some guys that the Detroit Pistons still could go after and they could make quite a few more signings my feelings are I think they’re going to go after another uh spacer another guy who spaces the floor for them I think that’s a priority for them I think they want to fill that fill that out one more slot I think they want to address the starting big man or defensive big man um position as well so I think those are the two areas that I believe they are still trying to address and I don’t know if they can address the Big Man part in free agency they’ve kind of missed the boat on that already um but they could address the the spacer in free agency however are they going to use those Moves In free agency we are four days now into the into the free agency and remember like we just mentioned the first segment a week ago trasan Lon spoke about how he wants to use his cap space at some point this year to get assets in this off now they have used $16 million of it for some assets with thj they acquire three second round picks they did use the other 2526 million of their c space for Tobias Harris that’s where they are at right now so they have made one move that included getting some kind of assets however four days four days have passed and they have been relatively quiet you haven’t really heard them much in free agency I think they are trying to find another trade to get in on I think they are trying to wait out these teams that are potentially up against the second apron they’re trying to wait out these teams that are trying to get underneath that second apron and maybe want to get off some contracts they’re waiting they’re being patient they don’t want to use up all this cap space I think for months the plan trasure or no traion the plan was going to be designed Tobias Harris we’ve talked about that for months I’ve told you guys since January might as well pencil in Tobias Harris so I think they known for a minute that Tobias Harris okay he is going to take up some of our cap space that’s a dumb deal let’s go ahead and exit out hit that cap space there put this to the side okay this is what we’re working with they worked with getting thj for those three second round picks and I think they are holding on to that the salary cap because they don’t want to use up more of that and miss out on the opportunity to get in on trades to get on ass on on some potential Assets in the future which is why you hear them being so quiet right now that doesn’t mean that all free agent targets are gone there are quite a few free agent targets left like a tias drones at the backup point guard position you have maybe a vet presence and a Patrick Beverly I don’t know maybe a Gary Trent Jr some we can continue to mention a Luke Canard a a former piston there all those those two guys can provide spacing um but I do think they are trying to be especially patient and and very selective with how much cat space they want to walk around with mind you they can walk around with this cap space for a few months now I I hope they wouldn’t keep everyone waiting over the next few months I don’t think they’re going to but technically they could and just wait till the very last second for you know a potential trade to happen again I don’t think that’s the case they will go but I think they are they don’t want to use this cap space they don’t want to use $20 million of INF fre agency and then miss out on a potential trade that could have came through they want to make sure they they have exhausted all options in a potential in a potential trade that happens some point within the next few weeks possibly maybe within the next few days and to add on to this James Edwards III of the the athletic the Detroit Pistons beat Rider um just posted an article La yesterday yesterday morning so on the third talking about the Pistons have cap space and he went into talking about how the Pistons could be trying in the trade market right now to get some assets and to make some moves so I want to just go through his three trades that he he brought up as a possibility for the Detroit Pistons just to give all of you guys an idea of what the Pistons could be looking at of what the Pistons could be trying to do here so the first trade he mentions is the New York Knicks who potentially could be trying to get out they’re right up against that second apron um he mention James that is mentions that they need to set about $4.3 million to avoid getting hard capped at the first apron um so this move that the pisses would be making with the New York Knicks would help them out with this so the trade is Mitchell Robinson miles McBride A 2025 first- round pick that is Detroit’s so Detroit would get their their prote first back so now they are they have more flexibility to use all their first round picks in the future and multiple future seconds for Jaylen durren and Jaye Ivy Pistons fans I’ve seen already destroy uh destroy James for mentioning trading Jaylen Duran and Jay and Ivy I don’t really want to get into the weeds of that I’m I’m I’m not really interested in talking about trading Jay Jaylen dur and J Ivy because I know how the fans get so I’m just going to move on past that I don’t really want care to share my opinion on on that um what I do want to mention is this is the type of deal that the Pistons could be looking to do they a team like the Knicks who needs to shed some salary they have potential assets you get a Mitchell Robinson who is protect who is the rim protecting big that you are looking for you get a miles McBride who just shot 41% from deep and was just playing legit rotation minutes con consistent big minutes for an Eastern Conference contender in the New York Knicks New York Knicks you get your first- round pick back which is a pretty good asset so you can now use your first round picks in potential trades you can you have all access to all of them you don’t have to worry about those protections anymore and you also add more future second round picks which again we’ve been told for a few days after they made that trade for thj that hey the plan is to take all these second round picks they acquire and turn those second round picks to maybe one or two first round picks that’s the eventual plan it sounds like I don’t know if that’s actually going to be you know capable of happening but that soundss like what the plan is so that’s this is the type of trade you could see the Pistons making one that helps another team get out from underneath the apron and you get some assets and then while also filling in some needs for the team like the rim protection and like some more spacing for the team so that’s the New York Knicks trade the next trade he mentions is the the Los Angeles Lakers you deal with them you help create some space for them which I don’t think that this is really an option anymore because LeBron at this time was talking about he would take less money to um to try to acquire another player um it doesn’t sound like it we just got a report that LeBron’s signing for the max now after they missed out on Clay so I don’t know if this trade would really be on the board for the Pistons anymore um this potential you know trade partner I don’t know if the Lakers really it feels like the Lakers are kind of stuck now at this point but before that the trade offer that James had mentioned was the Pistons just sending a second round pick and the Pistons receiving Gabe Vincent Jared Vanderbilt a future first and multiple multiple second round picks again another example of helping another team get out from underneath the apron create some space for them the Pistons don’t really really give up anything in value and me at the meantime you fill out your backup point guard position you get another defensive Wing you get another future first to pack in and more future seconds to potentially package together to get another future first so that’s another deal just to give another idea of what could possibly be happening and then there’s the Milwaukee Bucks one which I find incredibly interesting a few episodes ago we talked about potentially the Pistons needing to call about Brook Lopez I mentioned on the podcast that there was a report earlier in the offseason that the Bucks wanted to be a little bit more versatile defensively instead of just staying in a drop the entire time having their base defense be drop defense so um oh we just got a w notification what is it oh this is just more stuff about Buddy Hill okay fair enough let’s keep it going um anyways the report says that Milwaukee may try to move on from Brook Lopez and his contract so they can play more versatile defensively if that is actually the case I mentioned the Pistons should be calling about Brook Lopez he is the perfect type of Center they need a floor spacing big defensive Rim protection big as well a veteran presence I think he would be perfect for this team um the deal that James has here for Brook Lopez is sending Jaylen durren you’re sending Jaylen durren for Brook Lopez and a future first round pick now this is a deal where you are using jayen Duren to not only take on Brook Lopez contract so you can then get another future asset I do think that if the Pistons move on from a Jaylen Duran or a Jay iy that is the type of deal they are looking for they’re not looking for just a player they are looking to attach Jaylen dur or a j iy to maybe a second round pick or something to where they’re like okay we’ll take on the cap space but we will give you one of these young guys to also be given a future asset I do think that’s probably the realistic trade market of what either of those guys would provide and for this specific trade I would really like it Brook Lopez again allows you to play I think assar Thompson on the floor with your fiveman we’ve talked about how much I want to see the Pistons potentially um get a stretch big to see how it works with assar after how good it worked with Mike muscal and danila galinari in those short amount of minutes um so I would like this trade but yeah these are just trades to give you guys ideas of what the Pistons could potentially have up their sleeve I think it is very is being done on purpose I don’t think this is an accident I don’t think Tran’s working without a plan I think this is very much on purpose to hold on to this cap space not be as active in free agency so they don’t lose on these potential trades that could happen and for what it’s worth Keith Smith NBA tweeted out last night at the uh the night of July 3 that there are some teams that are looking to expand their trades some previous made trades that we all know of that have been agreed on there are some teams that are looking to expand the trade to like a third team to try offload salary I definitely think that sounds like Pistons they’re the Pistons theme music so we’ll see what they do I do think they have something up their sleeve I don’t think they’re just operating missing on all free agents like oh God now we’re screwed I do think this is part of the plan maybe not the entire plan I do think there was maybe a free agent or two they wanted to get but I think this is also part of the plan if they did miss out on some of those free agents so we’ll see what exactly they do I’m I’m praying that they do within the next eight hours before I leave so I can actually get an episode on it but if they don’t so be it I I’ll have an episode out when I get back but we’ll see what they got to do um let me know in the comment section down below or over on Twitter atca Hill do you guys think the Pistons have a move up their sleeves again let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter at cuka Hill when we come back I just want to give a quick update on what the Pistons roster is looking like at this point in the offseason what they could be targeting and what the current state of the free agency market looks like for the Pistons we’ll talk about that when we get get back so I want to thank you guys again for Mak lock on piss since it’s your first listen of every single day free to available on all your podcast platforms if you haven’t already head to the YouTube channel at lockon Pistons hit that subscribe button or leave us a five star review or whatever podcast platform you’re listening to this on is another great way to support the podcast so the business I’ve had a few players you know they’ve moved on from Evan for moving on from alakai Flynn James W been signed with the Indiana Pacers they’ve had a few guys that were on last year’s Rost they already leave already you know they’re already gone and they have acquired Tobias haris like I said and thj so at this point um at this point of the team or of the off season I should say the Pistons team they if they were to walk into the off season with this they would have enough to to make a rotation technically now do I think this would be a great rotation probably not but they have enough players when you’re looking at just the numbers to make up a rotation they have Cade they have Ivy they have Sasser they have thj they have assar they have Ron Holland they have Stu they have fento they have durren I believe I named everybody right there all nine of the players that they are that they currently have on this team so that’s where the Pistons stand at right now I do think my prediction and maybe you know you guys can listen to this in the future you guys a hearing pass me and you guys can come back and say Co you were wrong maybe but I do think the Pistons have another move up their sleeves and they’re going to be making some kind of transaction some kind of trade involving one of these players because they do not have many rotation spots open right now and I think they want to create some space for some more Veterans for some more guys that could potentially help the team this year so that’s where they’re at right now I don’t think this is where they’ll be at maybe in a week maybe in a few days I I don’t think this is where they’ll be at by then but that’s where you’re at right now as far as the standing of free agency at this point they have missed on a few guys we’ll talk we talked about that in the last episode we’ve already hit on all the bigs they missed out on but the three guards I really brought up that I thought they would be still targeting were buddy heeld Gary Trenton Jr and Luke Canard now buddy heeld has sign has agreed to assign a trade with the Golden State Warriors He’s going to Golden State so he is off the table I do still think oh and also Gary Harris I mentioned Gary Harris in the last episode he’s also resigned with the Orlando Magic they don’t have him either I do think there are still possibilities for a guy like I said Gary Trent Jr and a Luke Canard guys like that that could come and provide spacing because I do believe they still want to address their spacing so that’s the standing right now of free agency I’m not sure who else the Pistons really could be targeting in free agency um for anyone that I’ve had a few people ask by the way um someone ano they’re going to sign him last they have his rights they’re going to use up the cap space and then sign Simone fonio so don’t worry about that um I mean maybe tra I mean maybe Tran doesn’t like him as much as everyone thinks and maybe he does sign and trade him somewhere maybe but like I don’t I don’t think that’s what’s happening they’re just waiting they’re doing the smart thing of waiting until you know they use up all their cap space then use their their rights to sign Simone um but yeah I don’t I don’t really see any other players that I look at in the free agency market that the Pistons could really be going after um I mentioned a tus Jones earlier maybe a Patrick Beverly they want a veteran you know locker room uh presence from Pat Bev uh but maybe I I saw someone throw this name out there I do find it interesting maybe a marel fol as the backup point guard him and Sasser that’s a bigger guy who can guard bigger uh guards and provide that that running the offense Rim pressure and and and playmaking while Sasser is worried about scoring I I that makes some sense I could see that I I had a few of you guys reach out and tell me that that I I agree that does make some sense um I’ve already mentioned Luke Canard a few times outside that like I said I just don’t really see outside of those guys Gary Trent Jr who else the Pistons really could be going after in free agency so I do think they’re going to be making a move in the trade market we’ll see what that trade mark what that trade could become but that’s where we’re at right now with the Pistons as of July 4th 247 p.m even though this will be posted the next day so that’s where we stand right now um that’s all I’ve got for you guys today let me know what you guys think the Pistons are going to do next are there other free agents that you think I haven’t mentioned that the Pistons could still be trying to go after let me know comment section down below or over on Twitter at cooky Hill that’s all I’ve got for you guys today thank you guys for making locked on Pistons your first listen of every single day free The Detroit Pistons have played all of their recent top, first-round picks immediately into their careers; but, will Trajan Langdon also do the same with his 5th overall selection in Ron Holland?

  1. If Detroit made a rotation of its current roster the biggest weakness would not be a shooter or backup point. We don’t have enough big men. The east plays big. Everyone is starting two bigs in the east and we only have two on our entire roster, and neither are a seven footer.

  2. Do to the fact Holland has more offense than ausar with the same defense I think they should try starting him at the 3. He can help rebound and switching on 2's and 4's won't be a problem on defense.
Do to the lack of free agent inventory I think they'll trade second rd picks for a decent backup pg that can defend a lil and take care of the ball.

  3. I think Pistons should look to acquire Vucevic. Dude can shoot. Yes he isn’t great defensively. But it would be good fit for the young guys
