ESPN updates NBA Free Agency: Magic to sign Franz Wagner to five-year rookie max contract extension

[Music] we have breaking news in the NBA where France Vagner getting a rookie Max contract extension from the Orlando Magic that’s per multiple reports the deal will pay him $224 million could wind up being worth as much as 270 million bucks over the next five seasons Vagner is coming off his third professional season where he averaged nearly 20 points and five rebounds per game for the magic who made the playoffs this season for the first time since 2020 our CBS Sports NBA writer Sam Quinn joining us now so Vagner getting that rookie Max extension from the Orlando Magic a lot of people in our Newsroom are saying that’s a lot of money for the man what’s your reaction yeah I’ll admit I was a little surprised I mean look at this new CBA and all of the fear that it’s putting in teams to give out long-term contracts there was some thought that this class of rookie extensions from the 2020 NBA draft were going to be negotiated against pretty harshly right like there aren’t these obvious all NBA players in that class but so far what we’ve seen Max for Scotty Barnes Max for Kade Cunningham now a Max for fron Vagner I think after two years in the old cap environment I was on board with giving him a full fiveyear Max the big change that happened last season after being a League average three-point shooter for the first two years of his career he falls down to around 28% now if fron Vagner is a League average shooter you feel pretty good about giving him a full Mach he does a little bit of everything he’s a high level playmaker he rebounds for his position he scores well inside of the arc defends that three-point shooting is so important given their offensive woses that after the season he just had making 28% of his threes I would have figured that they might have negotiated a little bit harder but they ultimately come out and give him this full Max right away they’re betting on that shooting you know improving back up to the mean so if it does good contract if it doesn’t it’s definitely a risk definitely a risk we look at the Orlando Magic as a whole and they’re just on an upswing they had the best season that they’ve had in the last 10 years 47 and 35 last year so where do you think Orlando and the magic fit in the East yeah I think there’s a pretty clear top three in the East right now however you want to order it it would be Boston Philadelphia and New York that we look at as the clear Championship contenders after that you’ve got kind of a tier that Orlando has some room to grow into right they could be number four they’re going to competing with the Pacers with the Cavs they’re good teams in the East but it’s not nearly as deep as the West you can be a flawed team and still have home court advantage in the first round in the Eastern Conference right now given the the front court issues that Boston has with Chris STS poring is injured with Al Horford among the oldest players in the NBA You could credibly argue that the magic are the best defensive team in the Eastern Conference the problem they have the problem they had especially in that first round against Cleveland is that they just can’t really score yet now the team is so young there’s room for improvement they obviously added cavius Caldwell Pope there’s going to be internal growth if the offense can make the jump from bad to just average next year with that defense they’re going to be very good but still I would probably have them at a ceiling of fourth in that four five6 range with the Pacers and with the Cavs yeah it’s a tough tough division over there a tough conference Sam Quinn with this breaking news as France vogner getting that rookie Max extension Sam thanks for joining us here on HQ so take a look at some action that we have Summer League games they continue we got the Lakers and the Kings that’s at 4:30 p.m. the Heat and the Warriors a little bit later and at 8:30 on Saturday night you can check out with Geico that’s Jenny Dell I’m Tommy TR hope you’re having a great Friday had a great Fourth of July family baseball hot dogs and NBA offseason mov right am I missing anything no did you have some some hot dogs yesterday some family time uh I did not get into the Morning Buzz theme of eating hot dogs and watching the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest so no I did not have a hot dog did you I absolutely did and I watched more baseball than I think I’ve ever watched on the 4th of July cuz I was here all day you like reeling off all the highlights it was fun you mentioned NBA free agency though of course we talked about July 4th well free agency started on June 30th at 6 p.m. with players and teams allowed to discuss deals yesterday we had some fireworks with golden state the Warriors fill in the void of Klay Thompson’s departure with another three point threat after agreeing to a sign and trade deal and getting buddy healed from the Sixers a few days ago was all about LeBron James signing a twoyear Max extension worth $108 million leaving the Lakers strapped for cash and leaving players like Demar de R rozan still looking for a new home so you got to look at these teams D rozan entering his 16th season and even at age 35 one of the top free agents available this off seon and he headlines a very interesting list of free agents that are still on the hunt for a new team so Gary Trent Jr miles Bridges even Kyle Lowry who will be the next big name to make headlines that is the question our national NBA Insider Bill Ryder joining us now on HQ we’re going to break down where we stand today so July 5th who would you say is the best free agent signing of the off seon and it’s not a huge secret I’m sure it’s going to be Paul George am I leading you into that one Jenny it’s a yeah it is American right now is eating apparently hot dogs and watching other people eat hot dogs is Paul George Philadelphia where the Declaration of Independence was signed uh Pete look I think it’s a bit of a stroke of luck for Philly that that PG was available and how the Clippers mishandled that situation but you are right this is not new but is still incredible impactful PG going to Philly makes them Absolute contenders one of the top two or three teams in the Eastern Conference the moment he made that decision you really went um like full circle allamerican in that one I’m actually I’m actually quite impressed quite impressed all right next up we’re going to talk about the best trade of the off seon who do you have there all right so this is a little bit in the weeds here and there’s a Temptation maybe to go Klay Thompson to Dallas I actually think it’s Alex Caruso to the o City Thunder the Thunder are young and they’re probably going to make a big jump they had the best record in the Western Conference last year cruzo is exactly what they needed they swapped him out for Josh Giddy and other parts they get three-point shooting which is Spore FL floor spacing they get extraordinary defense I know he’s not a huge name he’s not as big as some of the other names that are out there that have been moved or maybe will be moved this off season or the trade deadline but it’s such a significant upgrade for a Thunder team that I think is poised to be easily the best at least on paper WT Conference next season the Thunder also agreed with free agent Isaiah um hartenstein on a three-year 87 million dollar deal so they’re they’re doing some work over there on the flip side the worst off season in NBA thus far who you got so I’d like so again I I’m so tempted to go Lakers because I don’t think it’s been good but I’ll actually go I’m gonna get a little more sort of in Shad of gr here I’m going to go the Denver Nuggets and some of this it’s really not their fault it is a product of how the CBA works now this second apron that restricts teams but losing kcp to Orlando and the inability to really replace him with how much better teams around the NBA and particularly the west of Goden to me it’s the Nuggets who are the losers it doesn’t mean they can’t compete it doesn’t mean they’re not one of the top it’s two or three or four teams in the Western Conference but what we thought was going to be a strangle hold on the west for many years has gone away they’ve lost key pieces to that championship team each of the last two off Seasons the teams they’re competing against have gotten markably better this is a product just from where they are as a team and how the NBA builds teams now and there are there’s a little flexibility and a very difficult decision if you want to trade Michael Porter Jr it’s a tough call but I think it’s a rough off season for Denver and I think it it severely impacts their ability to at least be the favorites in the Western Conference things are changing a bit all right Bill how about an NBA title Contender with work that still needs to be done this offseason who are you looking at yeah you know of the Warriors have made some really good moves and they have theyve had a three-point shooting some defense with the exit of Klay Thompson but there’s still the flexibility because they had a trade on the table I’m told that might have brought Paul George to Golden State Jonathan kaminga might have been part of that mix Andrew Wiggins going out some future first round picks they still have those assets Jenning so they could go and get a Lori Markin in or someone else who’s available later in the year probably in the trade deadline they could go from being probably right now somewhere between five to eight in the playoffs or in that playin to being a legitimate Contender they have the moves that they can make they have the to make I know they they’ve done a nice job trying to fill in the edges but they still have the opportunity to go out there and really upgrade and try to be a higher level basketball team if they can pull off the right move pulling off the right move is key right now and you think about pulling off some Right Moves and that’s who’s going to be running your program give me your best coaching hire of the off seon am I allowed to answer none of the above all right so I’ll give you an answer I think it’s I know is that just a negative July 4th sort of weekend H I’m going to go look I really like Mike buer being added to that that Phoenix Suns organization I think it’s a I think it’s a great ad it’s a great addition obviously the guy led the Bucks a few years ago to an NBA championship so it’s a it is the best hire this year that is still a sun teene that is restricted for the same second apron reasons they’ve really gone all in on three guys and one of those guys Bradley Beal has not played well he hasn’t no trade clause so I’m not sure if it translates to what Phoenix wants but it is a great coach coing higher it’s the right addition and if anybody from a coaching perspective can iron out the problems in Phoenix I think it’s him you know else I love about that hire he grew up just three hours Northeast of Phoenix so it’s like a little homecoming for him when he I no he said it’s mindboggling that he’s now with the head coach of the Suns it just all comes together just like this segment
